Nobody is safe as underdogs have their day at Wimbledon he last week of June has arrived, and the country is breaking out the strawberries and cream and praying the rain stays away. Wimbledon must be on again. So far, the weather has more than obliged, and the sun has shone down on an astounding opening week in SW19. We have seen historic upsets, great spectacles and downright shocks. The first major upset of the week came with Venus Williams falling at the first hurdle. The five time champion, now aged 32, looked like a mere shadow of her once frightening, powerful self as she slumped to a 6-1, 6-3 defeat against World no. 79 Elena Visnina, prompting many in the game including former British star Greg Rusedski to suggest it is in fact time for the American to consider retirement.

However, this does not explain the entire phenomenon. After all, Tsonga is still in his early twenties, Nadal is currently in his prime at 26, and despite his age, Federer is still world number 3 and a fearsome competitor. In fact, what we are seeing at Wimbledon is another example of 2012 being the year of the underdog in sport. Football has seen Chelsea win the Champions League and Denmark defeat World Cup finalists Holland at Euro 2012, Golf has seen a 14-year-old compete in the US Open, and Formula 1 has seen Pastor Maldonado win the Spanish Grand Prix. Now it’s Tennis’ turn, and that is a great thing. Everyone loves an underdog, because they represent the entire point of sport; the belief that everyone, whatever their background, is put on an equal playing field, and the person that plays the best will be victorious. “May the best man win” is more than sarcastic, B-movie-worthy trash talk, it is the mantra by which all sports operate, and as much as it is beautiful to watch the master of a game at work - whether it’s Barcelona, Tiger Woods or Roger Federer - everyone also likes to see them get taken down a peg every once in a while.
Williams, trudging off the court after first round elimination, this could be the beginning of the end. She hasn’t performed particularly well at a tournament for a long time, and after this defeat, she may ask herself whether it is worth putting herself through this much longer. This result was maybe not as much of a shock as it seems. It was more of an unwelcome omen. Venus Williams will always be remembered as one of the great powerhouses of the game, but the inevitable transition of generations, the changing of the guard, is approaching. It won’t come smoothly. Venus is a battler, and if she is going down, she will go down fighting. But this was the first blow. History was made elsewhere at Wimbledon on Saturday, as unseeded woman Yaroslava Shvedova achieved a ‘Golden Set’ while beating Sara Errani. She won an entire set without dropping a single point, the first time this has ever been done in a major tournament and only the second time in history. Shvedova will face Serena WIlliams in round 4.
Everyone was disappointed when Nadal’s conqueror Rosol crashed out in the third round. It would have been a great story if he could have used his victory over Nadal to propel himself into the latter stages of the tournament. But he has already done the important part. He has written his name into the history books, pulling off one of the great tennis upsets. He has proven, once again, that the best are not invincible. The consequences of these defeats will vary. Nadal will be back next year, stronger and better. However, for a dejected looking Venus

BESSIE COLEMAN On June 15, 1921 BESSIE COLEMAN became the first Black woman to earn a commercial pilot’s license after attending the Ecole d’Aviation des Freres Caudron at Le Crotoy in Somme for a 10 month flight training course after being constantly refused the opportunity to do so in the USA. Coleman finished the course three months early, obtaining a Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) license on June 15, 1921, making her the first U.S. woman of any race to do so! Coleman not only thrilled aviation audiences with her flying skills, but her very presence in the skies threatened the contemporary stereotypes and set new horizons for women of all races to be accepted in the emergence of new technological age in the exciting and expanding aviation industry. Bessie Coleman was one of 13 children - the daughter of a poor, southern Black family in Texas, and in her early childhood she grew up picking cotton and doing laundry and menial domestic work helping her mother to eke out a living. Dubbed “Brave Bessie” or “Queen Bess”, she became one of the most famous women in aviation history, despite the difficulties of racial and gender discrimination that was rampant in early 20thcentury America. Bessie Coleman also fought against segregation in the racist South and she used her influence as a celebrity to effect change, no matter how small. She overcame the challenges to become a role model for women of all races. Bessie Coleman is a Great Black Shero – an outstanding achiever!

How far would you go to save lives? Established in 1996 by Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis, the parents of former Leukaemia sufferer Daniel De-Gale, the charity provides valuable support to people suffering with blood cancers and facing incredible odds in their worldwide search for a donor. Every year over 24k people in the UK are diagnosed with a blood disease and or cancer. Some are successfully treated by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Many don’t respond to treatment and a bone marrow transplant is their only hope of survival. There is shortage of donors on the UK Bone Marrow and Blood registers and the charity recruits potential lifesaving donors; especially from Black and ethnic minorities (BME) audiences who are under-represented on donor registers. The ACLT has increased the numbers of potential BME donors from 550 to approximately 37,000 and has found life saving matches for 40 people. Before the ACLT was formed, the odds of finding a BME donor were 1:250,000. The odds have improved to 1:100,000 but the aim is to reduce the odds further by increasing the numbers on the BME register to 60,000. Funded entirely by donations from the general public, the charity is holding a fundraising 5k Marrow-thon on Sunday 2nd September in London’s Regent’s Park (see the advertisement). A Jamaican Story Chapter 5 by Clayton Brown

I
t was a Saturday evening and as usual my Father had gone ‘sporting’ and my Mother; my Sister and I were on the sofa watching Saturday night TV and chatting about whatever took our fancy. My Sister and I used to put some of our pocket money together and buy chicken wings or sprats from Brixton market, she would “cook them up” and we would have them as snacks during the evening. I loved those times! We use to love listening to stories my Mum use to tell about when she came to England. I had thought I had had a hard time with the weather when I came but my mother had experienced much worse. 1963, when she came, was the worst winter in the UK for 100 years and lasted from Christmas to around March. There were record low temperatures, constant snow, with even the Thames freezing from bank to bank at Windsor and up stream. My favorite story was the one about the first time she went looking for a job. She had been here for about a month and had decided that she would go job hunting. At that time you could knock on any factory gate, give your name and address and be offered a job starting the same day. She set out early and eventually found herself outside a factory gate where she asked the person at the gate if there were any jobs available. The gateman told her there were jobs and she should go to reception and ask there. When she got to the reception and asked if there were any vacancies she was escorted to

the shop floor where a lady came over and asked her what type of work she did. My Mum had only known farming, apart from a three month period when she had being a child minder for a doctor in Ulster Spring. So when confronted with that question, her reply was, “I can do but any little ting!” Which meant I can do little odd jobs as long as they are not too complicated, but which was taken by the lady to mean; I can do anything. The lady asked her the question again obviously wanting my mum to be a little more precise about her abilities. When she got the same answer she decided to get the foreman to continue with the interview. I was dying with laughter. My mum continued with the story. The foreman brought her into a room and asked her to sit down; he again asked her the same question the woman had asked, “What type of work can you do?” “Any little ting” was the reply again. The foreman left the room and came back shortly with some machine parts and some tools, he put them in front of her and said “there you go.” He then left the room. Tears were coming from my eyes. She sat there for about five minutes looking at the stuff in front of her waiting for the foreman to come back and explain exactly what he wanted her to do. After ten minutes waiting she got up and walked out of the building. We were all laughing so much we did not hear the knock on the door, but we all turned towards the door when Mr Douglas came in and in a very calm voice said ‘Mrs Brown, come and look at this, I think there is smoke coming from Mr East room’! We all jumped up, I was the first up the stairs. Sure enough there were copious amounts of smoke coming from under the door of Mr East’s room and we could hear the noise of the fire inside. My Sister shouted, call the fire brigade! At that time we didn’t have our own

phone and had to run next door and ask our neighbour Mrs Pink if we could use her phone to call the fire brigade. The fire brigade came pretty quickly and because the fire had not left the room it had started in (Thank God we hadn’t opened the door.) they put a ladder up to the top floor window and broke those windows to use the water hose. Once the water started flowing the fire was out within minutes. For some reason all the people who had gathered outside to watch the spectacle cheered when the hose was turned off. One of the firemen spoke to my mum and told her how he thought the fire had started. The parafin heater had been left on near the window, the curtain had caught fire and the rest was history. He advised us to contact our insurers immediately and said goodbye. After they left we went inside and went upstairs to look at the damage. The entire room was black with soot, and there was a large hole in the floorboards where they had burnt through.
We were still in shock, and after cussing Mr and Mrs East for being so stupid as to go out and leave essentially an open fire in their room, we went back downstairs to the living room where the TV was still on. We sat down and my Mother started saying she did not know what she would tell my Father when he finally came home. Just then I heard a creak from above. I looked up but did not see anything, however, the sense of danger I felt stayed, I heard another noise and called out getup! I don’t know what it was in my voice that made everyone get up and head for the door, but they did and not a second too soon. As we got to the door the entire ceiling came down.

In the period of time before your selected date you have the burden of choosing your dress, venue, flowers, cake, food, entertainment, bridesmaid dresses, and many more things that will determine the success of your wedding as an event. Before you have an anxiety attack, here are a few tips to make planning your wedding a little easier. Expect a Few Hiccups There is a saying that says that no one is perfect, well, the same thing can be said for events. To try and predict every possible curveball in your special night is impossible, and will take you away from enjoying your wedding. The best thing you can do is focus on the things that you can control, and leave the rest to fate and your wedding planner. You have the rest of your life to stress, on days that don’t cost upwards of £10,000. Enjoy and appreciate your wedding for what it is, don’t hate it for what it wasn’t. Sit back, have a glass of wine with your new partner, and let the night unfold in front of you. Shop Around Before Signing on the Dotted Line Any women that could be described as a bargain hunter should hang on to this precious gift when it comes to planning her wedding. If you are working with a wedding planner, a little common sense can go a long way with saving you money. As redundant as this may sound, the wedding planner most likely does a lot of weddings, and therefore has most likely developed some sort of relationship with the very people you need to hire. While most wedding planners are on the up and up, some may refer you only to the individuals they know while there could be a better deal elsewhere. It is up to you to smell out any sticky situations, and to shop around. You could end up saving yourself a pretty penny in the long run, but make sure not to belittle your wedding planner. Perhaps ask her to get you a list of pricing from different businesses
offering the service you are looking for, that way the planner can still be involved without pushing you towards a business for personal reasons. Chances are your wedding planner will respect and admire the fact that you want to be involved in the planning of your wedding. Know What Your Planner Can Handle A wedding planner should make the brides big day significantly easier to plan and enjoy, because they are experienced with planning weddings. They should have the crisis avoiding skills of an FBI negotiator, along with a very long fuse. They should be able to calmly handle the hiccups along the planning road while making the bride more comfortable about their planning skills. You should know exactly how much of your wedding you have paid the planner to take care of, and expect nothing less than what they promised. Your planner should be experienced, and ready for anything. For example, a bride was having her wedding at a conservative chapel so she could not show her shoulders during the service. The bride was devastated because she had chosen and already purchased a strapless dress. The bride’s wedding planner had faced this before, and was prepared with the solution: a bridal capelet! This is a perfect example of how the planners experience helped the bride avoid wearing a frumpy jacket or cardigan, and the lace capelet actually enhanced features on her lace accented dress. By using common sense and keeping calm when you otherwise would not be, you can make the time up until your wedding a lot less stressful. Your wedding planner should be used to a little bit of a cranky bride, but remember to maintain respect for your planner and the people around you. The last thing you want is to earn the badge of a “bridezilla,” so use your manners. A little “please” or “thank you” never hurt anyone. Headed by the General Women’s Ministries Director, Minister Cathy Payne and the First Lady of COGP (UK); Sister Delina Olive Powel, the National Women’s Ministries Director; Minister Joyce Fletcher co-ordinated the regional directors and planning team to present all delegates with a weekend of worship connection and devotion. A novice to this type of event, I didn’t know what to expect and had imagined that we would all be lounging around in white dressing gowns by the pool, sipping freshly squeezed orange juice and partaking in lots of girlie conversations away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

or over 10 Years, my Sister-in-Law has been inviting me to an event that she attended religiously every year. The Church of God of Prophecies’ “National Ladies Retreat”. Every invitation was declined until this Year. This year without any prompting, I picked up the phone, called My Sister-in-Law and invited myself. She was stunned and overjoyed at the words she was hearing, and didn’t waste any time organising my registration. All roads led to Staverton Park, Daventry in Northamptonshire on (Friday 25th May) for

The weather was gorgeous and once we checked into our stylish rooms and familiarised ourselves with our luxurious surroundings, food was the only thing on our minds and Oh boy were we generously catered for. At around 7pm we all entered the main hall and I was suddenly overcome with emotion as the singing that filled the room was so absolutely heavenly. I instantly connected, but didn’t recognise it. I sang songs that spoke to my spirit and lifted my soul.

This was certainly a theme that resonated with me on a personal level and one which it was hoped would open doors
of opportunity for women to train and develop a spiritual, emotional, physical, mental and progressive attitude to life and how they deal with the problems that beset us from time to time. Women experienced spiritual and personal growth as they became vessels through which the grace of God was at work. Delegates basked in God’s presence the

guest speakers, connection groups, beauty treatments and celebrations. Before the events got under way in earnest we were all allocated a connection group and allocated rooms for the various groups to meet. The connection groups were basically a way to form more personal relationships by putting strangers together in small groups it was hoped that this would bond the larger whole. For me this worked marvellously. My group, and what a wonderful group, was headed by Rosa and in attendance was Penny, Audrey, Mavis Leonora, Lorna & Zelphia. I was feeling a bit apprehensive as I didn’t know what was expected of me in this group. My connection group appeared to be ladies who prayed like warriors and initially, as I was the only non Christian, I felt a little overwhelmed. However, our group, by God’s grace, were all very caring and empathetic to my apprehension and made a real effort to make me feel at ease. I was happy, the connection I had established with these ladies, if only for a brief moment, was easy and nonthreatening, and I looked forward to our next scheduled meeting. When I retired to my room for the night, I became very aware that something was happening to me spiritually but I still didn’t understand. The next day, Saturday, I awoke refreshed with the determination that no-matter what, my body was going to reach that
Jacuzzi and sauna and I was going to take full advantage of the relaxing opportunities that were available. But I never got there as my day seemed to be packed with a diary of activities. My feet didn’t touch the ground. After breakfast, we attended the morning worship, then after that I found myself bobbing in and out of workshops. Sonia Brown (MBE) held a workshop on “The Challenges for the 21st Century Woman” which was an eye-opener as all in the room were made to look at the challenges we face as women and what we can achieve if we really put our mind to it. I emerged out of that room like a balloon floating on air. I didn’t get to the Jacuzzi or the sauna but I did manage to find a little time to get my nails done before re-convening with my connect group at around 4pm. The atmosphere in that room was amazing and I can honestly say that we connected with each other and I left on a complete high. I quickly got dressed and met my Sisterin-Law for dinner before Evening Worship & Praise at 7.00pm. This is when my life began to change completely! Presentations were made, Testimony’s were performed, and guest speaker Pastor Daisy Bailey re-confirmed the reason we were all here. My spirit was high and I felt the presence of God. The congregation were invited to worship at the Altar. My Sister-in law asked if I wanted to go up to the Altar and I declined. She said she understood and that there was no reason why we could not pray right where we

I felt the strength of God’s almighty power as I eventually looked-up to see that we were holding each other in prayer and tears were running down our faces. I was touched by the lord through my Sister and it was wonderful. There was my surprise. There was my message. I hadn’t known what to expect from this weekend’s event but was spiritually astonished at the change that had come-over me.

The next morning, I awoke with a new persona. Without consciously looking, I had found! My life had changed. I came away feeling refreshed, encouraged, fulfilled, totally motivated and showered with the Holy Spirit. When I returned to work the following Monday people commented that I looked different, lighter and refreshed. I made a vow to re-connect with my Bible and re-affirm myself with the word of The Lord, maintain being a good person, look after myself in mind, body & spirit, fully understand my main purpose in life on this Earth and continue to praise in Jesus’s name.

Guests attend the world premiere of the Nollywood film ‘Last Flight to Abuja’. A film written and directed by filmmaker Obi Emelonye was premiered at Troxy Cinema in East London early this month. “Last Flight to Abuja”, they said, “is a movie inspired by the several air disasters that took place in Nigeria in 2006 and with these latest crashes, the issue of air safety in Nigeria, highlighted by the film, remain very important.” Guests observed one-minute silence in memory of victims of the ill-fated Dana plane crash, in Lagos.

Step 1 – Riding the Emotional Wave
In July 2008 I received a routine email from my manager asking me for a meeting. I ran through the projects I was working on, so that I could answer any questions that might arise. There was the usual reference to the ‘predicament of the business due to the recession’, but I did not bat an eyelid. Suddenly I heard those fear inducing words, ‘and your role is to be made redundant in four weeks’ time.’ I sat there shocked; I had not seen this coming. My mind began racing, how would I manage financially and where should I go next in my career? Most people are likely to be made redundant at least once in their working life, but the sustained economic downturn is increasing the odds. Like divorce or bereavement, being made redundant is a major life disrupting event, and can trigger a roller-coaster of emotional responses such as anxiety, anger or even depression. Your job title may be bound up with your sense of identity and its loss may cause your selfesteem to plummet, or make you question your direction in life. At the very least, you are likely to worry about managing your financial commitments, and how you will
find another role in a challenging economic climate. During any time of significant change in your life, you are likely to experience a range of emotions. Each person can experience a different set of emotions, any or all of which may arise more than once. Here are some of the most common emotions you are likely to have during this time. You may find that they come and go in no particular order and you may experience them several times over. You may feel: • Angry at what has happened to you. You may feel like a victim and want to blame someone for what has happened. Underneath that you may even have feelings of hurt or sadness • Frustrated about the way your career has been put on hold in such an abrupt way. You may also feel resentful because your career goals and plans have been curtailed. • Rejected and believe that you are not good enough. Being selected for redundancy can make you feel that you are surplus to requirements and it can affect your self-esteem. • Worried all the time and feel that your peace of mind has gone. Your feelings may range from unease to considerable anxiety which raises your stress levels on a daily basis. • Fearful about what is going to happen next. You may feel powerless and unable to take the next step. Or you may adopt a reactive and scattergun approach to finding a new job. • Depressed about your life in general?

So how can you manage your emotions and begin to shift your focus into a positive space, as you tackle the difficult challenges you face? Going Forward: Acknowledge where you are on the emotional spectrum. This means accepting where you are right now, embracing your feelings and not judging yourself or comparing yourself to others who you may perceive to be coping better than you. Don’t be afraid to get support if you need it from family, friends; a counsellor; a coach, or your company may even be prepared to offer you a redundancy coaching package. See redundancy as an opportunity not a threat This will help you to think positively and productively. Despite a challenging economic climate there are great opportunities in the world of work: you could get a new job; be self-employed; go freelance; pursue a portfolio career or even a mixture of all of these. Focusing on the future could help you to look at possibilities and options that align with where you want to be, and what you want to achieve by a given time. Enjoy the change of pace Going from a structured daily work routine to organising your own time can feel overwhelming, but it is a great opportunity to take stock of where you are and creates space to enable a change in outlook. Remember it is ‘your role’ that has been made redundant, not you, and furthermore, you are not your role. You are an individual with talents, passions, interests and skills, which we’ll be exploring in the next stage.
Step 2 – Looking Back to Look Forward Anna was convinced that she wanted to move away from her hectic business development background, however she loved the buzz that bringing in business gave her. While examining her experience she realised that she loved and valued face to face interactions, Anna felt it was important to connect with clients, she loved the process she went through when negotiating a deal, and it was important to her to make a worthwhile, ethical difference to the bottom line. Anna went on to become a Buyer for a Fair Trade Company. Before considering what you might like to do next, it is essential to look back over your career to date. By reviewing what you enjoyed, and what you were good at in your past roles, you can begin to explore what it is that you want to achieve going forward. This will give you a roadmap going forward • You need to think about your strengths –What do you do well? Which tasks and activities do you find energising and engaging? What inspires you? • In terms of your skills what are you good at? – Think about areas in which you have a high level of proficiency such as MS Office Suite, report writing, negotiating deals, managing budgets and so forth. • What do you claim as your talents? Think beyond the confines of your previous role you have just left and take a wider perspective. Start to ask yourself what the above exercise and your strengths, interests etc are telling you.

Often people notice that you have a flair for writing for instance, that makes you stand out. • Your personality type –are you an extrovert e.g. do you enjoy working with people, do you like to take the lead, or manage people? Or are you an introvert? Do you prefer a role where you do not need to deal with the public, make regular presentations or be in a client-facing role. What is important to you in your work? Are you a combination of both? Do you like to have contact with others within an autonomous role?

Step 3 – What Do You Value?
Helen was adamant that it would be very difficult for her to work out what her values actually were i.e. identify her values, simply because they were not obvious to her. After working through the values exercise below, Helen was amazed to discover that she had a deeply engrained sense of justice, and that her need for order and making a difference were key to how she viewed the world. Helen described the process as ‘unlocking an experience of getting inside her inner being.’ Helen went on to use these discoveries to narrow her focus on roles that would enable her to honour her core values. Your values are the very core of who you are. They help you to make choices about what you commit to in life. If you give your time and energy to something that violates or neglects one of your values, you may start to feel frustrated and resentful or you may simply get a persistent sense that something is not right. Your career values are your guiding principles that keep you motivated and engaged in your work and help you to make the right decisions about what is important to you in your work. However, they can shift as you progress on your career journey, for instance: from making money to making a difference; working long hours to having work-life balance or from being a generalist to being a specialist. When you know what your career values are and you stay connected to them by putting them at the centre of what you do, they bring purpose and focus to your daily work. When you are disconnected from them you are denying a fundamental part of who you are. Going Forward
Identifying your values is not always easy, as some of them are so deeply ingrained as to be invisible. The following exercise will help you to discover what they are: Write down a list of key words and phrases about what motivates you and what is important to you in your career and add a sentence to expand on each one. For example: Work life balance: it is important to me to leave work each day so that I can enjoy the evening with my family/friends and to have my weekends free for my leisure/hobbies. Making a difference - it is important to give back and know that I am helping people and creating change as well as enjoying my work. After making your list choose your top eight words/phrases and list them in order of priority. When you begin to investigate opportunities, you use this list to assess whether they are in line with the values which are most important to you. You may not satisfy all of your career values all the time, but it is important to keep them in mind as they provide an anchor in your world of work. It is also important to review them at least once a year to see if they have shifted.
Step 4 – Where do you want to go now?
I used redundancy as a chance to revisit a business idea that I had been exploring for some time. In my HR role I had seen other colleagues being made redundant and realised the need for both practical and emotional support. Now I too required the time and space to work through my situation, discuss my fears and dreams, gain perspective and design an effective action plan. I worked with a gifted Coach, who

The next step is to figure out what this information is telling you about where you go next, about who you are and what you want. Your response to the above questions will begin to give you an indication of your skills set which encompasses your talents, abilities and aptitudes i.e. what you are good at and what you excel at. This exercise will also start to help you to paint a picture of where your interests lie. Discovering your skills and abilities, which you expand throughout your life, helps to provide a foundation which you can use to help guide your sense of direction when making decisions about your career choices.
Step 5 - Working the Net
Rena had spent the last few weeks researching and costing potential venues, eager to ensure that she would break even when she piloted her workshop. The workshop date was looming, and as yet she had not found the right venue nor did she have the number of delegates needed to make the event viable. She did not have time for networking she thought to herself, she had better things to do, but her friend was insistent. “I don’t really want to be here I thought, I don’t know anyone apart from the person who invited me,” thought Rena. Just then, her friend who had invited her to the function appeared and said, ‘come and meet Manda.’ Rena decided she would make this a brief conversation, then head to the cloakroom and slink away quietly. On meeting, this warm, casually dressed individual, Rena discovered that Manda was a Chief Executive Officer, and that they both had an interest in the printing industry. To Rena’s surprise, on finding out more about the business she was setting up, Manda offered Rena the opportunity to pilot her workshop, free of charge in a summer programme at her premises. Rena could not believe her

helped me to identify my values and use my need for having a purpose and making a difference effectively. I was then able to channel my own experiences into becoming a redundancy coach, so that other people wouldn’t have to struggle the way I did.

good fortune…the feedback from the pilot was encouraging, Rena went on to attract a number of business clients eager for her to run her workshop for their staff. Whether you decide to look for a new job in the same field, make a career change or become self-employed you’ll need to network. Think of it as ‘working the net’ and building up your personal contacts. It is one of the most under-utilised tools of the job hunter, and one of the most productive when used properly. Remember the maxim – “If you don’t ask you don’t get.” Networking gives you the opportunity to brainstorm, find out about new opportunities (often before they are advertised), and it even allows you to practice being interviewed. If you have decided to make a career change or set up your own business then carrying out an information interview with someone who is established in your area of interest is particularly important. It will increase your knowledge, is great for practising your communication skills and it is also an opportunity to meet people who may be well-established in your chosen field. Going Forward Important though it is, networking can feel daunting, so break it down into manageable activities: Begin by writing a list of as many names as you can of people who can give you advice, a lead or some support, then start contacting them. When you are given the name of a network contact, it is good practice to ask the person doing the connecting to introduce you to your new contact, if not in person,
then by some other means, e.g. by email or via Social Media, this goes a long way towards building rapport. In my own experience an introduction by the person doing the connecting resulted in finding a recommended Accountant, who was perfect for my business, and on another occasion an invitation to sit on a Board of Governors. Before you speak to your new contact ensure that you can articulate what it is that you want in a couple of sentences. Once the conversation begins, a succinct summary of what you are looking for will invite the contact to give you some specific assistance, ask for more detailed information or direct you to someone who might be better able to help. Carry Out an Information Interview. Decide what you would like to find out and who you would like to meet. The more you know about an industry, the easier it will be to figure out what people are looking for, and how many of the required skills you already possess. You can then tailor your approach in a job interview so that you stress those particular qualifications. You can even quote your information sources as authorities in the industry. Additionally, if you want to become self-employed then interviewing people who have done that successfully will be of great help. Join a networking group – this will help you to build relationships with people from a range of industries and backgrounds whom you meet regularly. There are a myriad of networking groups which cater to various needs. There are networks designed to meet the needs of women, there are breakfast, lunch and dinner networks. Find a group that provides a good supportive network that is in alignment with your business needs.

Step 6 – How Do You Feel Now?
Although I was developing my business idea with a view to becoming self-employed at some point in the future, receiving the sudden news that my redundancy was imminent felt like being struck by a tsunami – I did not see it coming, and as in the face of a Tsunami there was no time to affect an action plan. Having survived the initial wave, it was then a question of riding out a succession of waves around anger, frustration, a sense of hurt and feelings of emptiness, along with a loss of stability. Luckily for me, I was able to channel my feelings into setting up my business, so that today I am able to help those who have been faced with a similar experience. As you move through each one of these steps, you are still likely to be struggling with a range of emotions. However, whilst these may have originally related to being made redundant itself, you may now find that there are additional reasons for these feelings. They could be due to a decline in your social standing; often our job title or role is bound up with our sense of identity. You may be struggling with the loss of structure to your day, a lack of regular social contact and feel you have less opportunities

for expressing your skills, talents and personality. Finances may also be a worry and you may simply feel uncertain about the future. Going Forward • Looking for a new job or making a career change is a job in itself and should be treated as such. Plan monthly or weekly goals and daily tasks and review them to ensure that you are meeting your targets. Congratulate and acknowledge yourself for each achievement no matter how small. • In terms of your financial situation think about whether you could eliminate certain expenses. You may also want to seek financial advice about your assets, liabilities and for example arrange to reduce your mortgage and/ or your insurance payments or perhaps negotiate a payment break • You may find that you are feeling irritable or depressed and may even be avoiding people. However, this is a time when you need social contact so seek out opportunities through networking, some part-time work or perhaps coaching or counselling if you need specific support. • If you are missing the intellectual stimulation of work then consider volunteering (which may even open up new opportunities), catch up on books you’ve been wanting to read or even visit a museum or art gallery, many of which are free! • This can be a challenging and worrying time, so make sure you look after yourself by eating healthily, getting enough sleep, taking exercise and you may even want to learn a relaxation technique. All of this will stand you in good stead when you are working again.

Social Media – LinkedIn and Twitter can open up great networking opportunities if used effectively, regularly and authentically. Wherever you network the key is to always be clear about whom you are looking to meet and why. Also, remember that networking is a two-way street, it is therefore important to be willing to share your knowledge, expertise and contacts with others.

he powerfully medicinal Anamu (Petiveria alliacea) is also known in English as garlic guinea weed and guinea henweed. The Peruvians call it mucura, the Brazilians referred to it as anamu or tipi, and it is known as guine in other parts of Central and South America. It is most commonly used today in the Dominican Republic, Peru, Guatemala and Brazil. With a long history of medicinal use, this herb was also used in the Amazon rainforest to ward off negative spirits, treat skin conditions, relieve intestinal gas and regulate menstruation. Guatemalan tribes used its crushed roots as an inhalant for sinus problems, and Peruvian tribes revered it as a powerful cold remedy. Throughout Latin America, women used this herb to ease the pains of childbirth, and many tribes held it as one of the most powerful herbs on the planet. Alternative Health Properties of Guinea Henweed Many cultures have utilized Anamu flowers, leaves, and roots for remedies of a variety of negative health conditions.
