WHY ARE MASQUERADE BALLS SO POPUL AR ?
M
asquerade Balls have become all the rage these days as event organisers step-up their game to create a memorable experience for their target audience. Panache Occasions have had a fantastic time with this chic and stylish theme. Elegantly dressed patrons from as far afield as Birmingham and Nottingham have attended our Masquerade Balls during the past 6 months. Our events have been very successful and an undeniably memorable raving experience. The word MASK may be of Arabic origin and means
to disguise yourself and to hide who you really are. The wearing of masks originated at elaborate pageants and processions that celebrated the marriages and festivities of the royal dynasties of the medieval courts. Their invited congregation, governed at the time by strict and constricting rules, would don extravagant costumes and wear their masks allowing an irresistible opportunity to remain anonymous whilst behaving badly.
Masquerade Balls became costumed public festivities during the 15th century Renaissance in Italy and were particularly prevalent in Venice where elaborate dances were held for the upper classes. The intricate and exquisite masquerade masks were set against the backdrop of the stunning Renaissance architecture and art. Beauty was paramount in everything, and creativity and innovation was everywhere. A Swiss Count named John James Heidegger, introduced the Venetian fashion of a semi-public masquerade ball to London in the 18th Century. The first was held at the Haymarket Opera House and became so popular that regular masquerade balls were held by the royals. They soon spread from England across to Colonial America as guests tried to guess the identity of the person behind the masks. And so through to today, Masquerade Balls are less ceremonial and more about dancing, fun, decadence and glamour. The theme is a hugely popular choice with event organisers of corporate and charity events, and countless private parties around the world. The formalities are dropped but the promise of escapism and romance is truly timeless. So no matter how big or small your event is, as you walk in and see everyone in their masquerade masks, just remember you’re all keeping alive a tradition that goes back centuries, and long may it continue.

PANACHE - WHAT TO DO, WHERE TO GO
FINE DINING
It has been a long time coming! For years most of my family and friends had shunned Caribbean Takeaways. Initially we felt that they were of a standard that was acceptable, however, over time this standard dropped considerably. I don’t know if this was due to complacency or putting profits before customer care. Whatever the reason, we all felt that we could no longer justify paying £5 or more for rice & peas and chicken etc. which was at best mediocre. Also, and this is my greatest bugbear, for some reason we have never been able to fathom, it seems that 99% of the staff in most of these establishments give the impression that “attitude” is the main component of their job description. Now, however, like buses there are a relative plethora of fine dining Caribbean restaurants to excite your taste buds. The cuisine of the Caribbean is as diverse as the cultures. The food has Indian, African, Middle Eastern, European, Chinese origins - all tweaked over time to suit local tastes and the chefs have gone to the next level to give us high quality Caribbean cuisine served by professional customer service orientated staff who are not afraid to smile. he first of these new fine dining Caribbean restaurants that we are going to feature is: - CHEF COLLIN BROWN RESTAURANT Collin Brown was born in Jamaica in 1972. He started cooking at the age of eight and became a professional seafood chef by the age of sixteen. He then moved to the Cayman Island where he studied the art of fine dining, but as creative and eager to learn more and forever passionate about food he decided to move to London to study European cuisine. Collin is an Award Winning Master Chef and has won Caribbean Chef of the Year two consecutive years in the years of 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Using imagination and continually developing and experimenting, Collin has recognised how foods complement each other, developing ideas and paying great attention to detail in the composition of his dishes. He creates a fusion between the Caribbean and European cuisine.”

e are upset! Why is it that TV networks in the UK buy black African-American comedy but are, it seems, unwilling to promote home grown black comedians of which there are many. The black comedy circuit in the UK is booming. You can attend a black comedy show every week which are patronised by packed houses and yet it seems the powers that be refuse to acknowledge this powerful demographic information. Maybe the home of capitalism is more inclined to accept free market forces above any subconscious racial agenda. How do you justify the argument that a white audience will not relate to black comedy, because they are from different cultures, therefore, they have no shared references. I propose that argument is BS. I will come back to this issue at a later date, however, if you agree or disagree please write in and let us know your thoughts. info@panacheoccassions.com

PANACHE - STORY BOOK
A Jamaican Story Chapter 1 It was the most excited I had ever been in my short six year existence. I was going on a trip to Kingston. That was exciting enough for a little country boy living in the hills of Trelawney Jamaica, whose kingdom although vast, in my 6 year old eyes did not contain anywhere further than I could walk. Although I had made the trip to Kingston before, this time was different. This wasn’t just another trip to see the eye specialist who had been examining my eyes for as long as I could remember. The eyes that watered constantly in the breeze and which had consigned me to the status of the sickly one. I remember thinking that I would probably die early, because I was “sick”, although I didn’t feel sick. I could run, jump, climb fight and get in trouble as well as the other kids, but I was treated so differently by people I felt that they must know something I didn’t. Shop keepers I didn’t know would give me things without me asking or paying for them. I knew I was not that special, handsome or well behaved to make people who came into contact with me feel compelled to show their appreciation by giving me gifts. If I was sent to the shop to get a pound of flour to make dumplings for the pot, the shop keeper would give me a ripe banana and a bulla cake on my way out. It got to the stage where the older children would take me with them when they went to the shops as it was guaranteed
16 16
that I would be given some treat which they would share. “Brightly, yu lucky een? How Missa Giles love yu so?” It has to be remembered at that time in our poor district, in the countryside of Jamaica, shop keepers didn’t give things away! You could have credit, but not “freeness”. I thought it was because they knew I didn’t have long to live! And that thought stayed with me for a long time. I was going to the
immigration office to look bout mi passport to go England. My Mother and Father had left me with my grandparents three years earlier and were now “sending” for me. I would be going on an aeroplane and flying to that magical land in the sky called England. Where, like heaven, the milk and honey flowed, the sidewalks were paved with gold and you would be welcomed like the prodigal son, because this was, “the mother land”. I remember that I was not allowed to do any of the things that all the other young boys did, (well at least not when my Aunty was looking) such as having your own little “ground” where you learnt the essentials of farming. Things like digging yam hills, planting things like coco, dasheen, and peas, and then tending them until they were ready to harvest.
It hurt me so much that my cousin Ashworth who we all called Ash (my playmate) was able to do all those things and I was not. I knew I could do everything as good if not better than him, apart from climbing trees, Ash was the acknowledged “master” tree climber by both young and old because he could climb banana trees! I have learnt that banana trees are basically huge blades of grass; however, these blades of grass are not only silky smooth from top to bottom but are covered with their own anti-climbing oil. Being able to climb a banana tree imbued a status of celebrity on the individual. There were 12 of us living in the big house on the hill. My Grandmother and Grandfather, Aunty Naomi and her husband, mass Wilson or as he became known later “ole wil”. Ole Wil was the “science man”. He was a very light skinned man of slight build with “coolie hair” who my aunt had met in Kingston where she had spent 3 years training as a seamstress. Old will could “ketch duppy”, in bottles or jars. He used his science to protect us all. None of us who lived in that house were ever afraid of ghosts, we were secure in the knowledge that we were protected. Therefore, although Maas Wilson was not the biggest or strongest of men he had all of our quite respect. Apart from when he tried to beat us, at which point we would practically volunteer, as compared to a beating from anyone else, his was more like a loving hug. Ole Wil liked his white rum and I think this contributed to his inability to “beat” properly. Aunty Naomi, pronounced by us children as no-my, was the assistant matriarch of the house,

she was one of 3 daughters born to Ester and Bernard, and the only one who had not left the Island to seek her fortune. Choosing for reason I will reveal later to be the surrogate mother to us all. My Grandfather as far as I remember didn’t have much of a role in our everyday life. He didn’t tell us to do much, neither did he tell us not to do much, he just was. That’s my recollection anyway. Maybe he made a greater impact on the older ones. Last but certainly not least was the Queen or Empress of my world as I knew it, my Grandmother. In a matriarchal society, she was the supreme matriarch. Even now I am in awe of her; she still has presence even in memory. Aunty Naomi treated her with reverence, old Wil treated her with great respect and grandfather I suspect was just happy he was her husband. We, the grand children, from the biggest to the smallest, loved her. The children In age order, Roy, Dimple, Jean, Veronica, me, Ash, Cherry, Wessel and last but not least Lorna, all left in the care of our grandparents by our various parents until they had saved enough to send for their progeny Lorna and Wessel were brother and sister and their mother was the youngest of 13 children born to Bernard and Ester Bailey. Roy, Veronica and I were siblings as were Jean and Cherry. Dimples parents lived about 100 yards away
from us but she had gone to live with her grandparents because her dad was working in the US cutting cane and her mother had 5 younger ones to look after. I was about 3 years old when my mother left me, my father had left a year or 18 months before that and at that time my granny was strong and hearty woman who ruled her house with vigour, when I was about 4, however, she had a major stroke which took away all movement along her left side. It took away her movement put none of the power she wielded over us. If she wanted to discipline any of us, she had her agents who would gather the offender and deliver them for punishment. I remember one of the many occasions when Ash and I got in trouble, this time, for going swimming. You may think that this seems a very innocent activity to get in trouble for. If I tell you the circumstances, however, you may change your mind. We were about 5 years old at the time, my sister Veronica and my cousin Jean were a few years older, and it was their job to wash clothes down by the river. Ash and I decided to follow them down to the river and go swimming. When we got there we advised Veronica and Jean that we wanted to swim in the pool which was a located near the river. This pool as far as we knew at that time, was bottomless and we had never swum before.
However, we all felt that as long as we had a floatation device such as a banana tree trunk, then everything would be alright. Old banana trees were always being chopped down, so we each had our float. The girls left us to find their “washing spot” and we went swimming. Now when I think about it, I can’t believe we both survived that day. Banana trees as I described before are very slippery, made no less so by emersion in water. Unlikely as it seems to me now we both managed to sit astride our banana trunk floats and for some period of time, maybe 30 seconds remain upright. However, boys being boys, one of us decided to try and tumble the other one off their float. I don’t remember who started it, but somehow I imagine it may have been me, because up to this day I suspect Ash still has some deep rooted fear of me or of what he thinks I am capable of. As I was saying who started it doesn’t really matter, the gist of the story is that we were both 4 or 5 years old, neither of us could swim, we were in a bottomless pool, fell off our banana trunks, and tried to get back on our floats by struggling over each other and by some miracle, both survived. ADVERTISMENT business PANACHE&-finance BUSINESS & FINANCE R E D U N D A N C Y Catalyst for Change
By Jenni Williams
I
Start with the end in mind.
n July 2008 Jenni Williams received a routine email from her manager asking for a meeting. In preparation she ran through the projects she was working on, to answer any questions that might arise. There was the usual reference to the ‘predicament of the business due to the recession’, but she did not bat an eyelid. Suddenly Jenni heard those fear inducing words, ‘and your role is to be made redundant in four weeks time.’ She sat there shocked; She had not seen this coming. Her mind began racing, how would she manage financially and what should she do next in terms of her career direction? Today Jenni Williams specialises in Redundancy Management offering coaching programmes and workshops. She writes: Most people are likely to be made redundant at least once in their working life, but the sustained economic downturn is increasing the odds. Like divorce or bereavement, being made redundant is a major life disrupting event, and can trigger a roller-coaster of emotional responses such as: anxiety, fear, denial, anger, frustration or depression. Your job title may be bound up with your sense of identity and its loss may cause your self-esteem to plummet, or make you question your direction or purpose in life. At the very least, you are likely to worry about managing your financial commitments, and how you will find another role in a challenging economic climate.
Take action
Despite the obvious challenges, redundancy does offer many opportunities if you choose to look for them. If you are ready to take the first step on that journey, then read on: In my case I used redundancy as a chance to revisit a business idea that I had been exploring for some time. In my HR role, I had seen other colleagues being made redundant and realised the need for both practical and emotional support. Now I too required the time and space to work through my situation, discuss my fears and dreams, gain perspective and design a practical and effective action plan. I decided to channel my own experiences into becoming a redundancy coach, so that other people wouldn’t have to struggle through the process unaided. I knew I had made the right decision, when one of my first clients commented:
Manage your journey
Thank you!”Thank you for your gift of support and accountability during a very steep learning curve post-redundancy. You are part of my success.” So remember that whilst being made redundant can turn your world upside down, it can also become a catalyst for positive change.

Partner is basically a partnership among people to save collectively. It is a Rotating Savings and Credit Association (ROSCA), usually associated with poor, developing countries with limited access to credit. This system was brought to Jamaica by African slaves, and was originally used as a device to purchase freedom. (It is a tool of liberation). It is a popular form of savings identified around the World by other names : -
African – Susu Jamaican – Partner Chinese – Hui or Wee Chen Formed and registered in May 2005, Portia’s Partnership Savings Club’s main objective is to help solve the fundamental financial problems that affect middle income families from achieving financial independence. Founder, Portia Grant, an enterprising young woman from Jamaica, created a Partnership “Paadna” payment system which encouraged people with low credit ratings and limited financial resources, to consistently save the old fashioned way by regularly putting a little money away through a non-financial banking system “THROWING A PAADNA” Members get a secured/unsecured loan from as little as £50 to £2000 on their savings without the need to produce a lot of paper work or verify their credit history. Portia maintains that there are great advantages of joining a Partnership “Paadna” payment system: •
It forces you to save (group saving is easier than saving on one’s own because of the commitment made to others.)
•
It gives people the financial freedom to raise capital, without a credit history or collateral application.
•
It gives you quick access to ready cash in emergency situation.
•
It results in long-term series of saving and drawing cycles.
•
It speeds up the process of obtaining credit
•
Credit applications are easily available and interest free.
•
It contributes to the increased success rate of home-ownership.
•
Once a member has experienced saving with the club they will automatically join the ‘Recommend a Friend Programme’, where they would receive a reward for their good will.

We recognise the need to respect the world we live in and the environmental damage that threatens the planet. We are continually striving to minimise any possible negative environmental impact that we, as a company, create. • First and foremost we recycle textiles that would ordinarily find their way onto landfill • We use paper and paper products approved by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) • The plastic bags we collect are sent to UK recycling companies specialising in diverting waste away from landfill to either re-use or recycle into new products. Rocque Recycling export second hand clothes to developing countries. There, clothes and shoes are distributed to local markets where stallholders sell the clothes to the surrounding communities. Exporting unwanted clothing helps create overseas markets and provide less fortunate people with affordable western clothes. Items that are unsuitable for reuse because they might be torn or stained, are separated by their material type to be recycled. Absorbable materials such as cotton and linen will be cut into industrial wiping rags. Other materials such as wool will either be shredded and made into felt or pulled to make new yarn. Our Commitment Rocque Recycling is an environmentally conscious company with a global vision. We actively promote the positive environmental impact of textile recycling, and the reduction in UK landfill. SOCIAL NETWORKING PROFILE
Panache takes time out to talk to Sonia Brown MBE, founder of the fascinating online social networking forum: Why Sistatalk? I wanted to create a community where women could connect around a diverse range of common interests and subjects whilst sharing their expertise without me having to lead the discussion in a formal way. Sistatalk is informal, fun and very informative online networking. It’s not frivolous or another matchmaking site and you don’t need an MBA to be part of this community. The beauty of the site is that it’s not complicated to use and it’s FREE to join. Once you sign up there is so much information to view and you automatically become part of an interactive, friendly community of cutting edge professionals and entrepreneurs from 27 countries who really do want to share and grow. Our online community is there to help women to connect and collaborate across a number of platforms. Whether you are starting or running a business; looking to develop your career prospects or simply trying to find yourself personally, Sistatalk will have something for you.
What are women talking about? There are a wide range of discussions taking place on the site from how to attract more clients; nutrition and wellbeing; coaching; spirituality; speaking opportunities; leadership and other issues that impact on our lives. Many of our women are at the cutting edge of their profession and this helps us to get a higher calibre of articles, news and information on the site. The forums and blogs allow people who are passionate about particular subjects to have a platform to share, support and spread the word. Good information is the new currency and our members are not afraid to express their creativity and flourish. It’s great to be inspired but we also encourage our members to inspire others through their passion, which is why collaborations are so important.
What is your favourite feature of Sistatalk?
Whether you need professional development, business training or simply want to have some fun, there is something for everyone. It’s not only our members who use this facility. We are often approached by the mainstream media and production companies to find contestants’ for their shows e.g. Gordon Ramsey, The Weakest Link etc; to magazines for editorial features or photo shoots; to the government departments looking for our members to apply for public appointments or to enter politics. Each day we get new and varied requests for the members to participate in which keeps us fresh and relevant. But most of all, I am immensely proud when I turn up to events and organisers thank me for posting their events on Sistatalk because we helped to put more bums on seats for them. It’s great that our members actually support other women to prosper in their chosen fields.
And finally..... If you are serious about connecting with other women (and the men who care about us) to take your career and business to the next level, then join www.sistalk.co.uk to collaborate with savvy, visionary women who are truly living life on passion and purpose. were all grown up and ageing! This was an opportunity for us to vow to each other that we meet-up more often and not only at funerals. With that in mind, my brother, sister and I organised an annual Family Picnic and invited our relatives and friends as a fun way of always keeping in touch.
Discovering My Family Tree By Christine Simpson
You may discover that you are not the only one searching your family tree. I found two cousins who were doing the same and we all lived in different parts of the world. Facebook assisted with the regular contacts so that we could share our information gathered in order to fill the missing gaps. One family member who lives in the US Virgin Islands has decided to take on the juggernaut task of arranging a Family Reunion in 2014 inviting relatives from Dominica, USA and London. I’m so excited and can’t wait! So, I started my research in 2005. Today its 2011, I haven’t finished yet. And with the new additions to all our family members, the ancestral search will never end!
It wasn’t until 2005, shortly after my son was born, that I decided to embark on searching for my ancestors. I was inspired by the TV show ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ which had begun airing on BBC in 2004. It was such a fascinating programme. I was instantly hooked, and tuned in each week to see the next celebrity on their ancestral journey. My ancestral journey was about to begin. I firstly approached my Father and asked him many questions. We started with a blank sheet of A4 paper and listed the names of his mother and father, wife and children, aunts, uncles, siblings, cousins, nephews and nieces. The list was endless! Sadly, in 2006, my Father passed away. At his funeral I met relatives I had never seen before. They were from faraway places such as the USA, the US Virgin Islands and Dominica. At such a sad occasion, it was lovely meeting them for the first time. I continued on with my search and registered onto the Ancestry website where a wealth of information could be found. I purchased the WDYTYA? Family Tree template and inputted all the details I had gathered so far. I then approached my mother and asked her the same questions. Again, sadly in 2008, my mother passed away. Our family was faced with organising another funeral within the space of two years. At my mother’s funeral I saw relatives that I hadn’t seen since I was a young girl. We

Tips on the things you will need: • Patience (this research will take a while) • Ask relatives to be patient with you (you may have to keep asking them questions but they will be happy to oblige, after all, it’s their family too, and they will be pleased that someone is doing it) • Ask family for copies of old photos (this will put a picture to faces) • Lots of note paper (A4 notebook will do) and a folder to hold all your bits • Facebook (you will definitely discover relatives here) • Register on the Ancestry UK website • Visit the London Family History Centre, Kensington. You can search a vast amount of records here, from countries worldwide, including Caribbean, Africa and India. • Attend family gatherings (but get information without interrogation otherwise you might spoil their fun!) • Host a fun family event (party/summer BBQ or picnic). Invite family and bring out the old family photo album (always a good talking point) • Attend the WDYTYA? Live Show (usually held at Kensington Olympia). The next one is 24-26 February 2012. Put it in your diaries now! • Consider printing your family tree by professionals. All your hard work should be displayed, and you will be proud! Created for the discerning female, the designer behind this label Erzumah Ackerson draws her inspiration from both classic and vintage stimuli, as well as influences from her Ghanaian heritage - which in turn allows her to create garments that are often described as timeless, feminine and chic. The former London College of Fashion student’s experiences within the industry include exhibiting her first collection in central London at Profile 4, assisting Jonathon Saunders, the print designer with his London Fashion Week debut, plus working on Russian label KISA London’s Fashion Week collection. More recently, the label showcased a capsule collection as part of Untold’s London Fashion Week event, whereby interviews and reviews - including Africa’s largest TV network Studio 53 confirmed ‘BESTOW ELAN’ is one to watch for 2010’ - as quoted by Clutch Magazine. The style lead designer has recently taken the unique brand to another platform – BESTOW ELAN showcased its MUSE collection at the renowned Pure Trade Show, and continues to grow the label within new markets. PANACHE - HEALTH & ADVICE
I
How to cope with High Blood Pressure and Diabetes
was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes over three years ago and I have had varied amounts of success trying to control it without medication. When I was told I really wasn’t that concerned. My Mother had diabetes and high blood pressure, (as is the case with a lot of afro
Caribbean’s) for as long as I could remember and the only consequence of having the disease I witnessed was that my Mother had to diet and not eat salt. I was putting on a bit of weight at the time, caused by sitting at the computer all day and then coming home and relaxing in front of the TV with a brandy or two! I, thought therefore, that if I had to change my eating and drinking habits that wouldn’t be such a bad thing. It wasn’t until I had my appointment with the diabetic nurse that I realised how ignorant I was of the seriousness of diabetes and the effect it can have on ones’ health and life span. I therefore, thought it would be remiss of me not to share the information below with you. Early Detection Cuts Risks Blood pressure plays an important part in the management of diabetes. High blood pressure (hypertension) adds to the workload of the heart, arteries and kidneys. Damage to kidneys, eyes and feet are long-term complications that can go along with a diagnosis of diabetes, but patients need to be aware of other health risks, including heart disease

and strokes. Every visit to the doctor should include a blood pressure reading. Keeping track of blood pressure is important because people who have diabetes tend to have more trouble with high blood pressure than people who don’t have the disease. Having both diabetes and high blood pressure can pack a damaging one-two punch as far as increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and eye, kidney and nerve complications. High blood pressure is known as the “silent killer”. Usually the only way to find out if you have it is to have your blood pressure taken regularly. If your doctor can catch high blood pressure early, then he or she can start you on a program to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range. Normal blood pressure is 120/80.
Early signs of high blood pressure fall between 120/80 and 140/90. Over 140/90 signals high blood pressure. Keep That Blood Pressure Down If you discover that your blood pressure is creeping up, your doctor should recommend some lifestyle changes that you can make that will help keep it lower. Losing some weight, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and watching how much salt you eat can all help. Your doctor also might want to put you on blood pressure medicine to ensure that your blood pressure doesn’t rise too high. You and your doctor need to be extra vigilant about keeping your blood pressure at a normal range, because when someone has diabetes,

there is an increased risk of serious complications associated with high blood pressure. Risks For People With Diabetes • Kidney damage - When high blood pressure stays high, it can damage the small filtering vessels of the kidney. Diabetes also can damage kidneys, so when combined with high blood pressure, it can become even more serious. • Heart disease and stroke - People diagnosed with diabetes have double the risk of developing heart disease or having a stroke. Diabetes increases the risk of atherosclerosis, which is the build-up of sticky
ACE inhibitors do. Although they work in a different way, they still offer similar kidney protection as the ACE’s. • Beta Blockers: These help your heart by lowering the workload and helping it relax. Your heart doesn’t have to work so hard to get the job done. Beta blockers are helpful for preventing heart attack and stroke. • Calcium Channel Blockers: These also relax the workload on the heart and blood vessels. Blood pressure can be controlled by working with your healthcare provider, making lifestyle changes and taking prescribed blood pressure medications if needed. All of this can go a long way towards helping you live a longer, stronger and healthier life.
plaque in the blood vessels. That’s why watching lifestyle changes such as eating less fatty food, losing weight and getting enough exercise are such an important part of keeping blood pressure in a normal range. Medications For High Blood Pressure The most common medications for treating high blood pressure include: • Diuretics - eliminate excess water and salt from the body, through urination. This helps relieve the pressure on blood vessels. • ACE Inhibitors: ACE stands for angiotensinconverting enzyme, a type of protein that can can cause blood vessels to tighten. An ACE inhibitor drug stops the enzyme from being released in your body, which helps blood vessels relax. ACE inhibitors have been shown to decrease the risk of kidney damage as well as lower blood pressure, making them a good choice for people with diabetes or other kidney diseases. • ARB’s: Angiotensin receptor blockers work on blocking the same artery constricting substance that
