Panaga School Biweekly Issue 162

Page 1

Dear Parents,

So much has happened in the past three weeks, I don't know where to begin!

The following pages are full of a broad array of activities, trips, performances, competitions and experiences that your children have thrived in. Their creativity, cooperation and resilience is something to behold and I am sure you are as proud of them as we are.

Last week saw ourYear 5 and 6 children put on a remarkable performance of 'AladdinTrouble' and today saw our Year 1 and 2 students put on a wonderful nativity performance. It is always a privilege to see children sharing their talents and having a 'blast' in the process. Talent does not come naturally; it is the result of hard work and dedication and when this is demonstrated as part of a collective, the feeling of achievement and pride is so much greater. Thank you to the irrepressible Ms. Karachi and her team and the equally irrepressible Ms. Donna and her team for providing such great opportunities for the children to shine.

The children are most certainly the 'stars of the show', but our teachers, LSAs and admin staff come a close second. Term 1 is always a long term (15 weeks) and their constant drive, professionalism and enthusiasm is inspirational; we are very lucky to have such dedicated staff who put the children first. We are also fortunate to have such a wonderful parental community who are supportive of the school in so many ways. I do hope everyone has a lovely term break and for those families that celebrate Christmas, 'Happy Christmas' and a very peaceful, safe and Happy NewYear to you all.

The School Admin Offices will be open throughout the term break apart from between 23rd-27th December and on the 1st January. The school will reopen on Tuesday 7th January and we look forward to seeing all of the children then.

Please find some additional holiday reading, with the latest edition of the 'FOBISIAN' - FOBISIA's termly magazine celebrating the achievements of all member schools.

Best Wishes, Brian,

and all of our staff.

NTC RAMPAYOH

Last week, the NTC children were told that Sinterklaas might visit NTC and leave something in their shoe. Instead of bringing their own shoe to school, the children made a paper shoe. Of course, they also made a nice drawing for Sinterklaas as well as a wishlist.

Sinterklaas came and left a lovely picture of himself with a lovely poem. The students also got a chocolate letter because they have been very good.

On Friday 29th November, Year 4 took part in a Minecraft FOBISIAChallenge, hosted live from The International School @Park City, KL. Over the past few weeks, children have been taking part in a pre-challenge where they had to create a famous landmark in Minecraft. During the main event, children participated in a Creative Challenge and a Redstone Challenge. All of the children really enjoyed these challenges, and we hope to use Minecraft Education more around the school!

Winter Market

Aspecial thanks to Ricardos for donating churros for the chocolate fountain.

After weeks of preparation, our Year 4 children became market stall traders in a collective mission to raise money for Solar Aid, a charity we have been learning about as parfait of our IPC ‘Bright Sparks’ unit. Thank you to all the parents who helped the children come up with exciting ideas for games and items to bake and sell. Thank you also to all the children and sta who came to spend their dollars. In Year 4, the total raised was $ 900.

Y4 Adventurers and Explorers Exit Point

Y4 had a fantastic Exit Point from our unit Adventurers and explorers. Y4 children became teachers for the afternoon, sharing all their IC knowledge with mums and dads and testing them on the 6 explorers we have learnt about. Y4 were so excited to share their art work, research and STEM learning from the term and they did a superb job! Welldone Y4 and a massive thank you to all the parents for supporting us.

Year

5’s visit to the Brunei

Historical Center and the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

Year 5 students visited to the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque located in Bandar Seri Begawan. It was a great experience, where they learned about Brunei's Islamic heritage and admired the mosque's beautiful design and peaceful atmosphere.

At the Brunei History centre, we learnt and explored exhibits showcasing the rich history and culture of Brunei and its political development, deepening our understanding of the country’s heritage. As our children return to their home countries, they will be able to share their knowledge of our host country Brunei. Thank you to our incredible speaker for sharing such valuable insights about Brunei.

French Year 5

This term, we have been learning the French alphabet. The French alphabet is very tricky as many letters sound very differently in French. As well as preparing a song/ sketch in groups to teach the French alphabet, we also had to form the letters in pairs using our bodies. Can you guess the letters that we made?

Congratulations to all students for participating in Round 2 of the Mathematics “Sprint Race”.

In 1st and 3rd place were siblings Ryan and Joyce, a truly impressive achievement. So, what makes this brother and sister so strong in mathematics? What’s their secret?

Let’s uncover some of the tricks and techniques that make Ryan and Joyce tick.

Mandarin

The students had a great time creating beautiful Christmas greeting cards, incorporating Mandarin phrases like "圣诞快乐" (Shèngdàn kuàilè) for "Merry Christmas" and "祝你圣诞快

乐,幸福安康 " (Zhù nǐ shèngdàn kuàilè, xìngfú ānkāng), wishing everyone a joyful Christmas, happiness, and good health.

Merry Christmas

They enjoyed giving these heartfelt cards to their loved ones, spreading joy and warm wishes for the holiday season.

This week,Year 7 students used their understanding of muscles and bones to construct a model prosthetic leg/arm in science class.

Year 7: Build a model prosthesis

To further their understanding of muscles and bones,Year 7 also dissected and identified the various parts of a chicken leg.

Year 7 Trip to the Meteorological Centre

As part of their geography unit about the weather, theYear 7 children visited the Brunei Meteorological Centre in Bandar on Thursday, 28th November. First, the children visited the meteorological garden, where they examined how a range of weather instruments are used, such as an anemometer, barometer and a Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder. Following that, the meteorologists at the centre gave an insightful presentation about how they use weather data to make forecasts for the local community. The children also had the opportunity to spend time interpreting weather data in the command centre. The children had an enjoyable day learning about meteorology and even a thunderstorm was not enough to wash away their meteorological inquisitiveness. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the Brunei Meteorological Centre for taking care of us so well and for their amazing hospitality.

ABarrel of Fun forYear 8

Year 8 are learning about depleting resources around the world this half term in their geography lessons. The children found out about the importance of oil in today’s world during a refined presentation from oil experts Mr Lombardi and Mrs Hernandez (otherwise known as Veronica, Luciana and Camila’s parents). The children learnt about how oil is formed, processed, transported and used, which fueled the audience’s curiosity about the oil industry. The children also had the opportunity to dip into the presenters’ well of wisdom by asking some questions. We would like to thank our two guests for their slick presentation and giving up their valuable time to come and speak to us.

Year 8 Living Museum

The children in Year 8 ended this term’s history unit on a high. The children have been learning about medicine through time this term, ranging from Ancient Egypt to the present day. Some of the important individuals the children have been finding out about include Hippocrates, Edward Jenner and Marie Curie. The Year 8 exit point for their learning was the Living Museum, where parents and children from Year 6 and 7 were invited to talk to a range of medical pioneers, many of whom were brought back to life by the children. The children acted in role as a doctor or scientist from history and looked fantastic in their costumes. They also demonstrated how hard they had worked on their area of research when sharing their learning with the museum’s visitors.

#BuildToGive

For our last session in Wildlife Warriors, we decided to build a heart for the #BuildToGive Lego campaign. The students created fantastic hearts. It is fun to build a heart and do not forget that for every heart posted (without the picture of the child) on social media, the Lego company will donate a Lego set to a child in need around the world.

When the Lego comes out, everyone wants to play.

Teraja Fitness Champions!

In Teraja over the first term, all of our students have been improving their fitness levels in a multitude of different events. Once they gained in confidence, our students wanted to know what the ‘best’ score was for each challenge they attempted? As a result, we decided to make a ‘Fitness Champions’ board to celebrate our successes. Our board now displays the year group leader (green), and also the best in school (gold). The school champion also received a gold wristband. If your child is wearing one, don’t forget to ask ‘Why they are wearing it?’Maybe you could even try to complete the tasks too!

Language Leaders’ visit to

Rampayoh

Every year, the language leaders (LL) get the opportunity to teach a modern foreign language to the children in Rampayoh. The LL were allowed to choose their own language. Teaching ickle pickles is not easy as the teachers in Rampayoh know very well. The LL had to plan their lessons very well and come up with activities that would keep the children hooked. A lot of different languages were taught on the day, Arabic, Dutch, French and Spanish. All the LL did extremely well delivering their lessons and most of the Rampayoh students remembered most of the vocabulary. The LL came up with great activities to keep the students hooked. Well done to all the LL! We cannot wait to see them in action again in 2025.

Well done for working so well together and thinking on your feet. Some groups changed their activities during, as it was either too easy or too difficult. Some groups even added new activities.

Languagenut competition

From the 11th November until the 25th November over a 100 students from Melilas and Teraja joined the Global Languagenut Secondary competition. According to the organiser*, 3000 schools are subscribed to Languagenut globally. We had our work cut out as we were competing against huge international schools. The two weeks were very tense as we kept moving up and down, especially the last three days of the competition. However, with fantastic teamwork across the school, we came 15th overall. An amazing achievement!

17 of our students, across Teraja and Melilas placed below 1000. What a fantastic effort considering over 20.000 students took part in this competition. It is nice to see that the top 10 linguists of Panaga were from both Teraja and Melilas. We had some very young children from Year 5 placed 168th and 171th in the world. Two of our students in Year 8 placed 23 and 36th place winning 10 USD from Languagenut.I am so very proud of every single participant, from Year 4 to Year 8, who helped Panaga School get to number 15 in the world. We must also remember that our school only goes up to Year 8, other schools would have students much older than our school who joined the competition.

To achieve this place, many students worked extremely hard at home. I hate to think how many hours the students spent on the activities. Also, once our students were asleep, schools in Europe would be online. Every morning, as soon as I woke up, I would check our ranking. The last few hours were especially tense, especially for the students at the top of the table. Their positions kept changing and they knew that students would still be playing when they went to bed.

Rampayoh Nativity

Our magical journey through the world of Aladdin Trouble was everything it promised to be! This cast truly embodied the essence of adventure, showcasing their enthusiasm, resilience, and adaptability throughout the production. From navigating the twists and turns of their characters to perfecting their dance moves, they’ve proven that with hard work, anything is possible—even if it involves a bit of carpet magic!

A special shoutout to our talented Arabian dancers and singers who kicked off our show with the enchanting sounds of tinkle bells, setting the stage for an unforgettable performance. Their energy and grace brought a vibrant atmosphere that made our Aladdin adventure all the more spectacular! Now, let’s take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude. To the amazing parents, thank you for your unwavering support and for encouraging your young stars to shine. To our core team—Daniel, Ben, Chris, Cindy, Aimee, Ahsha, Melissa, Zaim, Peta and Lawrence—your dedication and creativity have made this production possible. We couldn’t have done it without your passion and hard work! And a huge thank you to the Senior Leadership Team for fostering a culture of performance that inspires our students to reach for the stars. A final shout-out will go to our students who worked behind the scenes as Tech Assistants, Production Assistants, Set Design Assistants and Make-Up Assistants. It certainly took a village… and what an amazing village it was!
