We look forward to joining our Nigerian Community next week as we learn and celebrate together. Personal Qualities Personal Qualities of Respect, Enquiry, Cooperation, Integrity, Communication, cindybintahal@panagaschool.com Resilience, Adaptability, Reflection and International Mindedness are central to teaching and learning at Panaga School. Personal Qualities indicate the strengths of character that teaching and learning at Panaga aim to create in our students. Head Teacher: These Personal Qualities are taken from our international curriculum guidance, Mark Walters based on research that indicates fundamental needs for successful adults in the markwalters@panagaschool.net 21st Century. You will see native Borneo animals displayed around the school and classrooms promoting these Personal Qualities, as we work with children and our (+673) 3373972/8988224 wider school community to share this understanding.

Social and Emotional Learning The academic year began with all teaching staff engaged in professional training by Professor Michael Bernard in his curriculum, You Can Do It! (YCDI!) The YCDI! Curriculum supports our academic programme, providing our students with strategies to develop the skills of Confidence, Resilience, Persistence, Organisation and Getting Along. Self acceptance is a key message within this curriculum also. YCDI! teaching and learning begins from P2. In our younger years, character puppets bring to life these skills. From P4, students are introduced to "The Keys to Success and Happiness". M2 students led an assembly at Teraja last week, presenting the relationship between Personal Qualities and “The Keys to Success and Happiness”. Personal Qualities are like a car. The vehicle that gets us places. Personal Qualities are the big picture. In order to operate the car (or our Personal Qualities) we require keys (or our skills from YCDI!).

We look forward to continuing to work with our school community, as YCDI! becomes embedded in Panaga School Weekly editor: our curriculum, supporting our students with skills and strategies to grow their Personal Qualities, in Damian Brady support of their academic learning and life in damianbrady@panagaschool.com general. Wishing everybody a good weekend. Regards, Cindy

Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk Brunei Teachers Day Once again another fun-filled week has flown by within the school. It was wonderful to observe the recognition of the work that teacher do, not just in Panaga, but across all schools with the celebration of Brunei Teachers Day. The wonderful learning journey your children progress through is down to the hard work of the teachers and support assistance within the school. A good teacher can make a massive impact on children/learners of any age’s development and it is such a credit to Panaga School that we have so many dedicated and inspiring teachers. Bye, bye Haze! This week it was lovely to view the children returning to their outdoor environments and we hope that the Haze does not return to allow this continue in the coming weeks. It was like opening a new world for them and the delight on the children’s faces across the school was clear to see. Living in such a unique habitat allows us to create new opportunities and experiences for our children. I would encourage all of you (weather permitting) to explore with your children the great outdoors.

Parental Safety Walk This week, we were delighted to welcome a number of our parents into Rampayoh and Mendaram to conduct a safety walk around the school. The involvement of the whole community is a vital part of school life and it was good to have so many people involved in helping to develop the school for our children. Thank you for all of your support. We look forward to conducting more of these events throughout the school year. - Mark

To introduce our new Talk for Writing text, ‘The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse’, P1 kicked off the week with a surprise shared breakfast. Whilst enjoying a range of exciting foods, we were able to explore many of the Personal Qualities.

International Mindedness We discussed the similarities and differences of foods from our home countries.

Adaptability We all had a go at trying something new.

Enquiry

We asked lots of questions to find out more about the foods we were tasting.

Thank you to all of the P1 parents for your generous and delicious contributions!

From small seeds...

This week, together with a Professor from the University of Brunei and member of Wetlands International, we kickstarted our Nursery Development Project. Dr Jonathan Davies gave us a talk and practical training about native seed collection and planting we could do in the Pre-Nursery garden; attended by teachers, LSAs, a parent representative, a member of Panaga Natural History Society and staff from Wetlands International. Following on from an introduction to wetlands on his previous visit, Jonathan explained how to recognise types of native seeds, their viability for growth and the best way to plant them.

We learned which seeds to collect during our ASA beach clean. Teachers and children will collect and deliver the seeds to Pre-Nursery, where we will prepare them for planting. Part of the Pre-Nursery garden will then act as a literal nursery for these seeds, caring for them, watering them and monitoring their growth. Once sufficiently mature, and too big for our seedbeds, they will be transported to their next stage of the project and when fully viable be replanted in deforested areas of Brunei.

This is just the start of an exciting, ongoing project that aims to involve and educate our children and staff to make a real impact, whilst raising awareness of deforestation, the impact of forest fires and educating children about local flora and how things grow. Wetlands International is a global not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wetlands. Its vision is for a world where wetlands are treasured and nurtured for their beauty, the life they support and the resources they provide.

Panaga School Swimming information Swimming lessons for Panaga School children are run by the Panaga Swim Team, consisting of Head Coach, Gianfranco, and assistant coaches, Salmah and Aaron.

Gianfranco was a member of the Italian National Swimming Team from the age of 14, where he participated in a Swimming World Cup and European Championships, and along the way, won numerous Italian titles. Gianfranco has been a swimming coach since 1994, whose qualifications have been reached through participation in swimming instructor courses at all levels. He is also a trained lifeguard.

Coach Salmah, an accredited Swim Australia Teacher, and Coach Aaron have both obtained Babies and Toddler, among other swimming qualifications.

During swimming lessons, all coaches follow a programme based on 8 levels. At level one, a swimmer learns the fundamentals of swimming. At level eight, a swimmer is able to swim all 4 swimming strokes. At each level, water safety survival is paramount. Each class is divided into three groups according to students’ ability - beginner, intermediate and advanced. During the academic year, assessments are carried out and certificates are issued in December and June attesting to the level achieved (levels are explained on the back of the certificate).

Panaga School will participate in the Brunei Junior Sports League (BJSL) Swimming Competition in Bandar Seri Begawan on 21st November. Students from P5 to P7 will take part in BJSL Swimming, but if there are some very fast P4 students, they too could be chosen in the team.

From October, Gianfranco will be timing the students. The four boys and four girls who obtain the fastest times for each stroke and each year group will form the team to participate in the BJSL competition.

Hot, friendly football action for U13s at JIS On Wednesday 25th September, the Under 13 Boys and Girls Football teams travelled to Jerudong International School (JIS) to compete in friendly football fixtures. The Boys team competed not only with JIS children, but also students from Seri Mulia Sarjana International School. All teams played with great spirit and there were some very tight matches. The boys won two out of their three games. The girls showed some wonderful skills as well. Thank you to Andy McKay for coaching the boys’ team and coming up to Jerudong. Although the conditions were extremely hot, all children can be proud of their tremendous effort. By Melissa Sim
