Dear Business Friends, To say that 2020 was a ‘different’ kind of year would be an understatement. We’ve always had weather related issues somewhere in the country but seem to adapt and move demand as needed. Covid-19, however, brought a whole new level of challenges to everyone in our industry. With new daily government regulations, our goals and outcomes changed constantly, endlessly altering our plans and business practices. We’ve had continuous communication with our customers assisting everyone with their own evolving needs and trying to do our best for mutual success across the country. One of our most important tasks internally was to properly educate our staff in keeping themselves and their families safe while continuing to do business as efficiently as possible. Signage, PPE, communication and diligence has kept everyone healthy! With Covid-19 shutting down many sectors we feel very fortunate to be in an industry that people have turned to for stress and tension release. As travel became virtually non-existent and everyone stayed home, the focus soon turned to improving their own living space. This season we have gained many new gardeners and inspired existing ones as gardening and patio container planting became a new pastime for many!! We see this enthusiasm and growth carrying on into 2021 and beyond. Retailers and nurseries have adopted new ways of providing plants to their customers using online delivery or curbside pickup… we have all found new ways to evolve our business practice. We thank you all for your understanding and patience in getting through this past season and look forward to working together in 2021. Sincerely, Your Pan Am Team

Sempervivum are more commonly known as "Hens and Chicks" and are a beautiful, hardy perennial succulent. The name sempervivum means "live-forever" and they are well adapted to thrive in some of the leanest soils and drought conditions. Sempervivums form low growing rosettes of succulent leaves that come in a large variety of sizes, colours and textures. Each spring the rosette produces new offsets (chicks). These clumps will spread into beautiful dense clusters of attractive growth. Chicks can be carefully removed and planted elsewhere. They thrive in sunny areas and require good draining soil and are an excellent container or rock garden plant for waterwise gardens.

Hostas can turn a dull, shady part of your yard into an elegant, lowmaintenance landscape that looks attractive from spring through fall. Unlike most perennials, hostas are grown for their colourful foliage rather than for their flowers. There are hundreds of varieties to choose from, each displaying its own unique leaf shape, size and colour. Finding interesting ways to combine these different types of foliage is part of the fun of growing hostas. Good companions include other shade lovers such as astilbes, bleeding hearts and ferns.

Hardy Fern Collection A wonderful collection of shade loving and hardy ferns! Whether you have a secluded pond or a serene woodland setting, you will find that an assortment of ferns will add beauty to any spot in the garden. Most ferns do well in partial shade or dappled sunlight, but there are many which will do well with quite a bit of sun, provided they get enough water. Shade loving ferns appreciate organic, evenly moist, well drained soil. If your soil is heavy with clay or sand you can add compost or other organic matter to help balance it out. (If you use manure, be sure it is well rotted or aged.)

These huge, ruffled satin-like flowers are extremely hardy (Zone 4-9). There was a time, many years ago in ancient China, when the only person who could own a tree peony was the Emperor himself. IN THE COMMUNITY PROUDLY A MEMBER OF
ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE - No Neonicotinoids to help save our bees. The neonicotinoids are a relatively new class of pesticides that have an effect on the bee's central nervous system. When used it spreads to the whole plant including pollen and nectar that the bees eat. Scientific studies indicate that, bees that feed on neonicotinoid contaminated pollen and nectar, forage less and produce fewer offspring. Pesticide use has become inevitable in modern agriculture. With pesticide usage increasing during the last four decades, the side effects are also increasing, one of which is the toxicity to honey bees. According to a study in the UK, pesticides damage the ability of bees to gather food and are also killing them. Since bees are the most important pollinators of crops, the use of pesticides can considerably reduce the yield of cross pollinated crops. In addition to the above effects, contamination of bee products, and loss in production of honey are the other effects caused by pesticides on bees. As these studies may not be 100% proven we will not take that chance to harm this integral part of the food chain. We have for many years discontinued the use of chemicals containing neonicotinoids. Our focus is on safer more natural solutions and practices.
RECYCLING In recent years we have made a concerted effort to recycle all of the waste material that we receive in raw material and use in production. All of our plastic containers, greenhouse plastic and stretch film are picked up throughout the season. We recycle 100% of all cardboard, wood and pallets that come through our nurseries. All of our organic material is separated and disposed of responsibly. For high traffic shipping lanes we use our Envirack metal displays that are reclaimed and reused the following season.
Pan Am awarded top recycler certificate from our recycling partners Westcoast Plastics.
GIVING BACK Each year we select charities in our communities that make a significant difference in the lives of people less fortuntate than ourselves. Below are the four main charities chosen in 2020. Our selections are not only based on the suggestions of our staff across the country, but more importantly what each charity represents and the needs they are addressing. Food banks and shelters are an integral part of our communities and are always in desperate need of help. We are proud to support the Surrey Food Bank, St. Matthew’s House, Nightshift Ministries and Neighbour 2 Neighbour.
