#1c Kiwi ‘Issai’ Not only does Kiwi ‘Issai’ produce sweet, juicy fruit (without the annoying fuzzy skin of traditional kiwi fruits), it also creates a beautifully fragrant privacy screen. Can easily be trained to an arbor or pergola as well. In early summer, fragrant white flowers cover the glossy green foliage for an even more beautiful look. Beneficial pollinators, such as butterflies, love this hardy vine. ‘Issai’ is self-pollinating. The vines take very little maintenance- just pruning and support to hold about 100 lbs. of fruit for a mature plant. They are hardy in zones 4-9. The fruit is very high in Vitamin C and its use in recipes is endless. These hardy Kiwis ripen in mid to late September.

Sempervivum are more commonly known as "Hens and Chicks" and are a beautiful, hardy perennial succulent. The name sempervivum means "live-forever" and they are well adapted to thrive in some of the leanest soils and drought conditions. Sempervivums form low growing rosettes of succulent leaves that come in a large variety of sizes, colours and textures. Each spring the rosette produces new offsets (chicks). These clumps will spread into beautiful dense clusters of attractive growth. Chicks can be carefully removed and planted elsewhere. They thrive in sunny areas and require good draining soil and are an excellent container or rock garden plant for waterwise gardens.

These shade perennials thrive in low light, and best of all, they get better with age. As members of the lily family, they are hardy, easy to grow and care for. Gardeners turn to hostas when they are looking for good shade perennials, but most cultivars actually do better if they get a little sun. Early morning sun and filtered shade in the afternoon seem to be ideal. The gold and green types and many variegated varieties do need some sun to develop good leaf colour.

Fern Athyrium Lady in Red

Fern Athyrium nip. Japanese Painted

Fern Fern Cyrtomium fort. Dryopteris Eryt. Japanese Holly Autumn

Whether you have a secluded pond or a serene woodland setting, you will find that an assortment of ferns will add beauty to any spot in the garden. Most ferns do well in partial shade or dappled sunlight, but there are many which will do well with quite a bit of sun, provided they get enough water. Shade loving ferns appreciate organic, evenly moist, well drained soil. If your soil is heavy with clay or sand you can add compost or other organic matter to help balance it out. (If you use manure, be sure it is well rotted or aged.) Ferns require minimal maintenance throughout the year. Once in the garden, ferns in general do not require additional fertilizer. They will appreciate leaf litter from surrounding trees and an occasional top dressing of a compost mulch.

Rhodos are ornamental, acidic-soil loving, broad-leaf evergreens that grow best in partial shade. These huge, ruffled satin-like flowers are extremely hardy (Zone 4-9). There was a time, many years ago in ancient China, when the only person who could own a tree peony was the Emperor himself. Clematis Collection This spectacular collection of clematis vines includes only the best in colour, vigor, and hardiness. Known as ‘Queen of the Vines’, clematis produce wonderful blooms on healthy foliage. Clematis are long-lived perennial vines and they have an important role to play in any flower garden. As they scramble up trellises, climb over arbors and thread themselves through other plants, clematis weave a rich tapestry of colour and texture. Growing tip: Clematis don’t like to be moved, so choose the planting site carefully. The ideal location will have well drained soil that’s rich and loamy. If possible, find a spot where the root zone will stay relatively cool. In most cases, you can count on nearby plants to shade the soil. If the planting area is more open, plan to mulch the soil with shredded leaves or compost, keeping the mulch a few inches away from the stems.

Blackberry - ‘Chester’

Boysenberry

Huge berries with outstanding flavour! This plant produces juicy, deep purple berries that can grow to be over an inch long and an inch around. Boysenberries have blackberry, raspberry, and loganberry in their parentage. Delectable when eaten fresh and famously used for outstanding jams and jellies. Currants are prized for their distinctive flavour in juice, jam, jelly, pies, and other desserts. Gooseberries are a hardy northern fruit that are a favourite for jams and tarts. Their distinctive sweet-sour flavour also works well in pies. Jostaberry A gooseberry and currant cross! The rich berry taste is reminiscent of gooseberry with a kiss of black currant. Deep-red, almost-black fruit is high in vitamin C and forms in large clusters, ideal for juices, jams, jellies, and fresh-eating. Cold-hardy plants are long-lived, thornless, and productive once established. Loganberry A red raspberry-blackberry cross. Large, dark, wine-red berries ripen from July to September. IN THE COMMUNITY PROUDLY A MEMBER OF

ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE No Neonicotinoids to help save our bees. The neonicotinoids are a relatively new class of pesticides that have an effect on the bee's central nervous system. When used it spreads to the whole plant including pollen and nectar that the bees eat. Scientific studies indicate that bees that feed on neonicotinoid contaminated pollen and nectar, forage less and produce fewer offspring. Pesticide use has become inevitable in modern agriculture. With pesticide usage increasing during the last four decades, the side effects are also increasing, one of which is the toxicity to honey bees. According to a study in the UK, pesticides damage the ability of bees to gather food and are also killing them. Since bees are the most important pollinators of crops, the use of pesticides can considerably reduce the yield of cross pollinated crops. In addition to the above effects, contamination of bee products, and loss in production of honey are the other effects caused by pesticides on bees. As these studies may not be 100% proven we will not take that chance to harm this integral part of the food chain. We have for many years discontinued the use of chemicals containing neonicotinoids. Our focus is on safer more natural solutions and practices.

RECYCLING In recent years we have made a concerted effort to recycle all of the waste material that we receive in raw material and use in production. All of our plastic containers, greenhouse plastic and stretch film are picked up throughout the season. We recycle 100% of all cardboard, wood and pallets that come through our nurseries. All of our organic material is separated and disposed of responsibly. For high traffic shipping lanes we use our Envirack metal displays that are reclaimed and reused the following season.

Pan Am awarded top recycler certificate from our recycling partners Westcoast Plastics.

GIVING BACK Each year we select charities in our communities that make a significant difference in the lives of people less fortuntate than ourselves. Below are the four main charities chosen in 2021. Our selections are not only based on the suggestions of our staff across the country, but more importantly what each charity represents and the needs they are addressing. Food banks and shelters are an integral part of our communities and are always in desperate need of help. We are proud to support the Surrey Food Bank, St. Matthew’s House, Nightshift Ministries and Neighbour 2 Neighbour.
