We would like to thank you all for another successful season. We appreciate your patience in getting product to you in a timely fashion. Freight logistics seemed to be one of our biggest challenges for goods coming in and finished nursery stock going out. Amazing what we can get done when working together. We continue to see a high demand for nursery stock across North America. With many gardeners in a ‘staycation’ mode, they are creating or expanding their flower and vegetable beds like never before. Gardening has become a new and physically active hobby for many. Not only improv ing the home, gardening has become a very rewarding form of excercise. As our catalogue cover says, ‘Creating a healthy lifestyle...one plant at a time’. We look forward to the opportunity of working with you in 2023. Tip again for 2023: Order early!
Stay healthy, Your Pan Am Team

MADE FOR THE SHADE!
These shade perennials thrive in low light, and best of all, they get better with age. As members of the lily family, they are hardy, easy to grow and care for. Gardeners turn to hostas when they are looking for good shade perennials, but most cultivars actually do better if they get a little sun. Early morning sun and filtered shade in the afternoon seem to be ideal. The gold and green types and many variegated varieties do need some sun to develop good leaf colour.

Most ferns do well in partial shade or dappled sunlight, but there are many which will do well with quite a bit of sun, provided they get enough water. Shade loving ferns appreciate organic, evenly moist, well drained soil. If your soil is heavy with clay or sand you can add compost or other organic matter to help balance it out. (If you use manure, be sure it is well rotted or aged.) Ferns require minimal maintenance throughout the year. Once in the garden, ferns in general do not require additional fertilizer. They will appreciate leaf litter from surrounding trees and an occasional top dressing of a compost mulch.

While roses are considered by many gardeners as the ‘Queen of the Garden’, Rhododendrons are said to be the King. Their large trusses of flowers can be almost any colour of the rainbow. These hardy (H-1) Rhododendrons produce intensely coloured blooms in May and June. Rhodos are ornamental, acidic-soil loving, broad-leaf evergreens that grow best in partial shade. They prefer to be planted on the North or East side as a South/Southwest exposure increases chance of winter injury.

Hydrangea Collection (Hydrangea) The coarse green foliage of these fast-growing shrubs is covered in late spring through fall with deep rich flowers. Performs well in shady areas. Virtually pest free and disease resistant, maintenance of Hydrangeas won't cut in on your garden enjoyment. Hydrangeas are a beautiful accent plant when set amongst other shrubs. Addition of aluminum sulfate intensifies the rich blue colour of ‘Nikko Blue’ and ‘All Summer Beauty’.
How to Adjust Hydrangea Colour! Hydrangeas may produce pink, blue, or lavender blooms, depending on where it’s planted and how it’s fed. The presence of aluminum in the plant ultimately determines the color, and pH affects the uptake of aluminum. Alkaline soils, pH of 6.0 or more, are more likely to produce pink blooms, and more acidic soils, pH 4.5 to 5.5, produce blue flowers. Pink hydrangeas can be turned blue by applying aluminum sulfate to lower the pH and add aluminum to the soil. Applying lime to raise the pH level will help blue hydrangeas turn pink. If your soil naturally produces very blue or very pink hydrangea flowers, you may need to grow your hydrangeas in containers or raised beds to achieve the desired colour. If you do attempt to change the colour of your blooms by adding these minerals, dilute them well, and add sparingly. It is very easy to scorch your plants by adding too much. White hydrangeas are not affected by efforts to change bloom colour.

Sweet Fern Shrub
(Comptonia peregrina)
Comptonia, or sweet fern, is a extremely hardy shrub that closely resembles a fern. It is a small, aromatic mound-shaped shrub, 60-120cm (2-4 ft.) tall. Multiple stems with loose, spreading branches. Long, narrow, olive-green leaves, which have rolled back edges and rounded, fern-like division. Flowers are brown catkins that appear before the leaves unfold. Sweet-fern is a member of the wax-myrtle or bayberry family (family Myricaceae), which grows nearly worldwide, with about 40 species of small trees and shrubs; 5 native tree species and 3 shrub species in North America. The leaves are very aromatic when crushed.

Clematis Collection This spectacular collection of clematis vines includes only the best in colour, vigor, and hardiness. Known as ‘Queen of the Vines’, clematis produce wonderful blooms on healthy foliage. Clematis are long-lived perennial vines and they have an important role to play in any flower garden. As they scramble up trellises, climb over arbors and thread themselves through other plants, clematis weave a rich tapestry of colour and texture.

Growing tip: Clematis don’t like to be moved, so choose the planting site carefully. The ideal location will have well drained soil that’s rich and loamy. If possible, find a spot where the root zone will stay relatively cool. In most cases, you can count on nearby plants to shade the soil. If the planting area is more open, plan to mulch the soil with shredded leaves or compost, keeping the mulch a few inches away from the stems.

It is usually one of the first spring foods that can be eaten from the garden and at any time of the season it provides a good excuse for making pie.

Growing strawberries: Provide adequate space for sprawling. Set plants out 45cm (18”) apart to leave room for runners and leave 1m (3’) between rows. Strawberries are sprawling plants. Seedlings will send out runners, which in turn will send out their own runners. Make planting holes deep and wide enough to accommodate the entire root system without bending it. However, don’t plant too deep! The roots should be covered, but the crown should be right at the soil surface. It is very important that you do NOT bury the crown (central growing bud) of the plant or it could rot. The leaves, flowers, and fruit must be exposed to light and fresh air. To settle their roots into the soil, water plants well at the time of planting.

Dwarf Cherry Collection (Prunus cerasus) This wonderful series of Dwarf cherries has been recently released by the University of Saskatchewan. We have chosen three of the sweetest eating varieties: Cupid, Romeo and Juliet. The story behind these is fascinating, and spans nearly 70 years of trials, tests, and selections by various plant breeders. The trees don't get very big -- typically 2-2.5m (6-8 feet) tall. They fit small yards, and you can pick most of the fruit from the ground. Yields are typically 2-3 ice cream pails per tree, or 20-25 lbs. Dwarf sour cherries have a lot going for them. They are cold hardy to zone 2, with a fruit flavour that’s sweet, and great for fresh eating (unlike standard sour cherries). The shape is extremely compact like a bush, and therefore easy to harvest. Come spring, a dwarf sour cherry bush is absolutely stunning. They flower slightly before leafing out, so they look like a cloud of blossoms. All varieties are self pollinating!

is a hardy deciduous hybrid shrub variety of dwarf cherry released in the Romance Series from the University of Saskatchewan. Cupid produces the largest fruit of all the dwarf cherries which is a dark red and is perfect for fresh eating. Although sour is in their name, they can be surprisingly sweet when harvested at the right stage of ripeness. Grows well as a bushy hedge as well as pruned into a single-trunked tree.
Dwarf Cherry Prunus cerasus Cupid
Juliet
is a hardy deciduous hybrid shrub variety of dwarf cherry released in the Romance Series from the University of Saskatchewan. Juliet is compact to fit into smaller spaces—and it makes harvesting and pruning easy. At maturity, it produces up to 25 lbs. of deep-red, large fruits that are a flavour sensation! Our sweetest, tastiest dwarf cherry yet.
Dwarf Cherry Prunus cerasus Juliet
Romeo is a hardy deciduous hybrid
shrub variety of dwarf cherry released in the Romance Series from the University of Saskatchewan. Sweet enough for fresh eating, but with enough tartness to make perfect pies! Romeo Dwarf Cherry tree grows 2-2.5m (6-8 ft.) tall, making it easy to prune and harvest. The juicy, deep crimson, glossy cherries have a complex, sweet-tart flavour and high flesh-to-pit ratio. Yielding up to 25 lbs. of fruit per tree.

Order cancellations are subject to a 50% re-stocking fee on custom orders and 20% re-stocking fee on regular orders. MINIMUM ORDER: $1000.00. Administration fee of $100.00 on orders under $1000.00. PRICES - All prices are subject to change without notice. Volume discounts only apply to accounts paid within 30 days. All prices (listed on the order forms) are F.O.B. our warehouses (Surrey - BC, Millgrove - ON and Niagara-on-the-Lake - ON) and are subject to change without notice. SHIPPING - We will use our best judgement (normally pooled with other deliveries in your area) when shipping, unless special arrangements have been made. CLAIMS - Claims regarding quality of stock must be reported to our office within 14 days (30 days for dormant stock) of receiving product. All returns must be approved in advance by contacting our customer service department within 14 days of receiving product. Because we have no control over the environment in which your product is stored after leaving our premises, we will not accept any returns for damaged, frozen, or overgrown merchandise. You may file a claim with the carrier and notify our office to render any possible assistance. LIABILITY - Pan American Nursery Products Inc. will in no way be liable for any amount greater than the amount paid for said nursery stock.

GIVING BACK Each year we select charities in our communities that make a significant difference in the lives of people less fortuntate than ourselves. Below are the four main charities chosen in 2022. Our selections are not only based on the suggestions of our staff across the country, but more importantly what each charity represents and the needs they are addressing. Food banks and shelters are an integral part of our communities and are always in desperate need of help. We are proud to support the Surrey Food Bank, St. Matthew’s House, Nightshift Ministries and Neighbour 2 Neighbour.
