Project Summary
Objective
The goal of this project was to design a signage system for the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art located in UC Davis. The new museum is to be a welcoming and open forum for the experimentation and the exploration of new ideas for artists and also to showcase the broad range of cultures of UC Davis students.
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to create a clear and visually appealing signage system, which can attract students and visitors, but also leave a lasting impression that, can pass messages and signals to people. The museum has not yet been built. It will be located close to Mondavi Center, so the new museum’s architectural design will have to be something particularly special. In order to make the museum unique, we intend to use light colors and choose a clear typeface with corresponding symbols.
Audience
The Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art wishes to target individuals who are interested in art and design. The goal of this project is to design a successful signage system that would be both helpful to visitors as well as fit into the UC Davis aesthetic.

Strategies of design
Strategies
The signs will utilize the museum’s logo and will have a vivid color palette. The signs will be clean and neat. The designs will follow the overall aesthetic of the museum. The main sign will display the information about museum, and other signs will be composed of two mirrored sides with additional symbols indicating the reader’s surroundings. The challenge is the museum’s signage system: choosing the right color, icons, and typefaces are crucial. We intend to apply welcoming colors to that match well with the typeface and icons used. They will be eye-catching and will potentially attract more artists and designers to open exhibitions in new museum.

Buildings and the Surrounding
In terms of the buildings, most of them are pale- colored. Adding more colors into the area can brighten the atmosphere. As we can see, the south side of the site faces the parking lot connector road, and the north side of the site faces the campus loop road and the district’s shared public space, VQuad. The west side of the site is adjacent to the pedestrian promenade from the parking structure that leads to the Mondavi Center.

Artistic Legacy
UC Davis has a characteristics of freedom and discovery that come from this location, have provided a unique atmosphere for the exploration of art. This legacy has expressed itself through the arts since the Department of Art was founded and artists such as Wayne Thiebaud, Robert. Price Amerson helped explored more tradition work with faculty and in building the Fine Arts Collection at UC Davis. This legacy lives on through the Shrem Museum, both in its teaching collection and through its goal to inspire makers of all kinds. It will add to the distinctive tradition of student leadership by providing a place for collaboration with other students, faculty, alumni and professionals.

Other Museum Logos
Nowadays, logo is crucial for museums to have a striking visual identity; the logo is an important graphic, which represents the museum simplistically and memorably. Most logos contain a very strong and clear shape that perfectly conveys the message. For instance, the AM logo is striking because it plays with the geometry space created by the “M” and the “A”. Therefore, mixing and matching shapes, coupled with text with an appropriate font, can make a striking and effective logo.

One of goals of the Shrem Museum’s logo is to help people remember the museum. We took “Shrem Museum” out of the full museum’s name because it is easier to memorize and is more striking . The chosen colors reflect the art and design, so we chose green, magenda, and orange. The triangle shapes of the buildings are indicative of the Shrem Museum; they are not only sharp, but also vivid and interesting. The whole shape of the logo make people associated with the construction of the museum, especially the roof of the museum. And the chosen colors and combinations bring an exciting and playful atmosphere that will attract students and visitors.
C: 37 M: 0 Y : 100 K:0
Next, the typeface shows an unusual combination of influences: the glyphs are reminiscent of stone carving, the wide horizontal axis is typical of Victorian display types. It is also based on geometric shapes, which is a good match for the shape of the sign and icons. All in all, the logo gives creative, vivid, professional feeling to visitors.
