Health Benefits of Drinking Tea The many health benefits of drinking tea have made tea a very popular drink. Since more than a thousand years ago, tea has been a favorite health drink among Asians. According to Chinese Emperor Shennong, tea can cure many ailments. Aside from good health, tea is also believed to improve emotional and intellectual wellness. The popularity of tea is not limited to Asia and has reached the Western part of the world. Western professionals who made researches about the effects of drinking tea have come to the conclusion that there are indeed many health benefits of drinking tea.

According to researchers, tea is rich in phytochemicals and an antioxidant called polyphenols. Phytochemicals and polyphenols make the excretion of cholesterol more efficient. Tests done have shown that tea effectively helps in the treatment of many illnesses such as heart disease and several types of cancer like prostate and breast cancer. Moreover, it has been found out that drinking tea helps in keeping the mind sharp and in losing weight. Like coffee, tea is an effective energy booster. Because its caffeine content is less than that of coffee, food and nutrition professionals consider tea as a better choice

over the caffeine-rich drink. Additionally, tea has flavonoids, a type of polyphenols, which are known as cancer-fighting compounds. There are several types of tea. The only types of tea that purists consider as real tea are those that are made from Camellia sinensis plant. Tea infusions made from other plants are called herbal teas. For nutritionists, all types of tea are beneficial, especially brewed tea. Instant powdered tea and bottled tea oftentimes have too much sugar and additives.

1. Green & Black Tea There are two varieties of Camellia sinensis: Assamica and sinensis. Assamica is native to India while sinensis is native to China. Tea made from Camellia sinensis leaves has five varieties. All varieties contain Epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, a highly potent polyphenol. EGCG helps prevent various diseases like cancer and heart ailment. It is also anti-inflammatory and antiviral. Aside from EGCG, theanine and caffeine are also contained in these teas. Theanine and caffeine boost concentration and energy. Camellia sinensis leaves are processed to produce different types of tea. The less the amount of processing the tea leaves undergo, the more polyphenols the produced tea has. Fermentation and oxidation decrease the polyphenols in tea. Black Tea To make black tea, Camellia sinensis leaves are oxidized and fermented. Among the five varieties, black tea contains the most amount of caffeine. It is commonly used to make flavored and instant teas. Black tea is good for the lungs. It lessens the damage caused by smoking cigarettes. Also, like green tea, black tea is rich in EGCG. Drinking black tea helps prevent stroke. Green Tea Green tea is produced by steaming the leaves while they are still fresh. It is an unoxidized tea. Because it is not oxidized, green tea contains high amount of EGCG. Green tea is the most popular tea variety and it has the most known health benefits.

Green tea lowers the risk of neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Polyphenols play an important part in keeping brain cells healthy. The abundant amount of EGCG in green tea helps prevent several types of cancer including breast, ovarian, lung, liver, skin, stomach, and prostate cancers. Catechins, a type of flavonoid, promote weight loss and make exercise sessions more efficient. They boost metabolism. They are also effective fat burners. Burned fat is converted to fuel. This fuel increases the tenacity of muscles. Polyphenols in green tea help prevent heart disease. Polyphenols increase blood flow and prevent blot clots from forming in the arteries. Green tea is an effective shield against UV rays. It can be used as a sunscreen. It can also be used to treat sunburned skin. Strength and mineral density of bone can be improved by drinking green tea. Diabetics with Type 2 can benefit from green tea. Polyphenols regulate the processing and releasing of sugar into the bloodstream.

There is much more theanine in Panda Dung Tea than in normal tea. Regular panda tea drinking has a lot more health benefits than other teas.

2. Herbal Tea Herbal tea is made from spices, herbs, or other plants. It is made by infusing the spices or roots, fruits, leaves, bark, or seeds of a plant in hot water. Herbal tea is generally caffeine-free.

Herbal Tea The health benefits of herbal teas vary and depend on the plant. Some of the popular herbal teas are ginger, chamomile, cinnamon, rooibos, and peppermint. Ginger Tea Ginger tea is one of the most popular types of herbal tea because it is easy to make and almost everyone has ginger at home. Ginger tea has anti-viral properties that effectively fight the common cold. It also stops nausea and relieves pain caused by rheumatism and arthritis. Chamomile Tea Chamomile tea is aromatic and has a mild taste. These properties make chamomile tea a favorite among many herbal tea drinkers. The taste and aroma of chamomile tea are not the only reasons to drink this tea. It has many health benefits. Chamomile tea helps in the digestion of food, relieves itchy and irritated skin, and treats cough as well as cold symptoms. It also calms the nerves and induces sleep. Cinnamon Tea Cinnamon tea is good for the heart. It lowers the level of bad cholesterol (LDL). It also improves blood circulation, relieves menstrual pain, and has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

Rooibos Tea Rooibos tea is a calming tea. It is known to relieve stomach cramps and indigestion. It also helps prevent Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease by fighting free radicals that damage brain cells. Peppermint Tea Peppermint tea can treat some stomach ailments including bloating, constipation, and stomach cramps. This tea also freshens breath, relieves stress, soothes sore throat, and clears sinuses.

3. Instant Tea Instant powdered teas, especially those marketed as iced tea, generally contain very little tea and have few health benefits. They contain a lot of sugar and unhealthy additives like coloring agents and flavorings. Bottled teas that are marketed to contain antioxidants have health benefits. However, they are still not as beneficial as brewed tea. The extra processing stages that bottled teas go through reduce the amount of polyphenols in the tea.

Precautions In general, tea, especially if brewed, does not have adverse health effects. However, there are teas that are deceptively marketed as slimming teas. In reality, these teas have plant-based laxatives as main ingredient. These slimming teas increase bowel movement and do not burn fat. Moreover, long-term use of these laxatives can cause serious health problems. Even though there are teas in the market that do not have health benefits, or worse, can cause health problems, there is no reason to not drink tea. As long as you carefully choose the tea you will drink, you have no reason to worry. Start drinking tea and experience the many health benefits of drinking tea.
