TherichheritageofIndia,oneoftheworld’soldestcivilizations,isanall-embracingconfluenceofreligions,traditions,andcustoms. ThestrengthsoftheIndianheritagelieinthetreasureofitsart,architecture,classicaldance,music,floraandfauna,aswellasin thecenturies-oldphilosophyinnatetoitspeople.Avisittoheritagesitesislikeawalkthroughhistory,changingpathswitheach dynastythathasruledoverIndiansoil.Foranexhibitionofthisheritagetoall,itisnecessaryaspacewherealltheculturalheritage ofIndiacanbeexposed.Adedicatedspaceineachlocalitynearheritagesiteswheretouristsandlocalpopulationscanacquire knowledgeaboutthesitesbeforereallyvisitingthesites.Aninterpretationcentercanbedesignedfordisplayingtheessenceofthe tangibleandintangibleheritage.

Saswadisatalukatown33km southofPuneatthefoothillsofthe FortPurandar,and30kmfromthe laststretchoftheDiveGhat. AccordingtoBabasaheb Purandare,thegreatnarratorof thegrandMarathasaga,“everyinch ofSaswadsoilhasachapterof historywrittenonit!”.Thistownis packedwithsomeoftheancient templesbuiltduringMaratha’s reign.Saswadisknowntobe deeplyentrenchedinhistory, spirituality,religion,culture,and architecturefromtime immemorial.TheannualAlandito PandharpurWariofDnyaneshwar Palkhistopsinthetown.

ThePandharpurWarirouteisshowninthe map,withthelocationofSaswadmarkedon themap.

SiteAnalysis

Thissiteislocatednear Pune-Saswadroad.The plotisanopenlandwell connectedbytheprimary road18mwide.For transportation,thebus stopislocatedonthemain road.Theheritageplaces includingtemplesand wadasareeasily accessible.

Theheritageplacesin Saswadaremarkedonthe map.Thebusstopsand busstationsarealso marked.Thesiteislocated nearthesaswad-BopdeoPuneroadandisnearthe Saswad-Puneroad(route forPandharpurWaari).

Aim:

Theproject'saimistoproposeaplacethatcanrepresenttherichculturalheritage characteristicsofthePurandartaluka,particularlySaswadandJejuri,andbecome adistinguishingfeatureofthem.Inadditiontoprovidingresearchfacilitiesto academics,thisinterpretationcenterwillalsoofferanumberofIndologycourses andhostseminars.

Whyvaults?

Avaultedceilingcansaveenergyand money,whichisthetheorybehindbuilding green.Oneofthemostessentialfeaturesof avaultedceilingistoincreasethenatural lightintotherooms.Vaultedceilingsgive theeffectofopenspace.Eventhoughthe increasedspaceexistsoverhead,avaulted ceilingappearstoaddsquarefootage.

PuneissituatedwheretheriversMulaandMuthaconverge.AfterMumbai,itisthesecond-largestcityinthestateofMaharashtra, anditissignificantforthedevelopmentofthenation'seconomyandindustry.ThelargestretailvegetablemarketinPune,India,is MahatmaJyotibaPhuleMandai.ThelocationchosenforthestudyandanalysisoftheurbanfabricisboundedtothenorthbyLaxmi Road,tothewestbyBajiraoRoad,totheeastbyShivajiMaharajRoad,andtothesouthbyChavanRoad,withMahatmaPhule Mandaiservingasthedominantlandmark.ThelocationisintheheartofPune,andvariousoldWadasfromthe1700sto1900scan befoundthere.Thestudyareaisequippedwithpracticallyallofthenecessaryamenities.

Puneislocatedatthejunctionof theMulaandMutharivers.Itisthe secondlargestcityinthestateafter Mumbai,andisanimportantcityin termsofitseconomicaland industrialgrowth.MahatmaJyotiba PhuleMandaiisthebiggestretail vegetablemarketinthecityof Pune,India.Themarketbuildingis designedintheGothicstyle.The buildersusedmasonrycarvedfrom thelocalgreystone.Thestructure isdominatedbyan80feetcentral, squat,octagonaltower.Thetower issurroundedbyaverandahwitha tiledroof.Thiscoverstheground andfirstfloor.Todaythemarket about526stallsoffruitsand vegetables.Themarkethasitsown GaneshMandalforGaneshFestival andisoneoftheoldestinPune.

Theentireareacanbelookedatasadiverse commercialarea.Thereareheritagemarketplaces, culturalmarketplaces,andnewagemarketplaces,to nameafew.Therefore,avarietyofinterventionsare beingconsideredtoenhancetheneighbourhood's identityinthespiritof"redefiningthisarea."

Incontrasttowhatmallsorretailstoresoffer, pedestrianwalkwayscuttingacrossthezonescanbe createdtoprovidethedistinctfeelofatraditional Indianbazaar,whichisessentiallyintenselycrowded duetoitssqueezingwithinsmallspaces.

Whenitcomestotheproductsthataresold,whichare primarilythoseneededforPujaandnumerousother culturalactivities,thestreetsclosetoMandaihavea distinctcharacter.Thisarea'srichculturallegacycan beembracedandcelebratedbyredefiningthese streets.

Theimpendingmetrostationwillofferexcellent opportunities,whetheritisbuiltonthegroundoron stilts.

Theproposalaimstostrengthentheconnectionbetweenpeopleandtheplacestheyshare,facilitatingcreativepatternsofuseand payingparticularattentiontothephysical,cultural,andsocialidentitiesthatdefineaplace.Placemakingisamulti-facetedapproach thattakesadvantageofalocalcommunity'sassets,inspiration,andpotentialtocreategoodpublicspaces.Itdependsonthemyriad waysandmeansinwhichthephysical,social,ecological,cultural,andevenspiritualqualitiesofaplaceareintimatelyintertwined. ThenewMandaibuildingisamassiveconcretestructureplacedbehindtheMahatmaPhuleMandaibuilding.

ThenewMandaibuildinghamperstheelevationofthesurroundingarea.TheexistingMandai buildingisonlyamarketplace,andtherearenopausepointsinMandai.Thiscommercial sectionofthecorecitywillbeimprovedbytheproposalofanewmarketareaand multipurposeopenspacewithaseatingarea.Theconnectionbetweenthetwomarketplaces willbestrengthenedbytheproposedplazabetweenthetwoMandaistructures.Thisplaza willserveasarestarea.Bystagingstreetplays,artexhibits,urbansketchermeetups,and othersuchevents,theplazaandtheopenspaceofthenewMandaibuildingwillpromote culturalvalues.

TheoldbuildingofmandaiisaGothic-stylestructurebuiltin 1886.Thematerialusedfortheconstructioniswood.Assuch,the proposednewmandaibuildingshouldmergewiththeold mandaistructureandnotstandoutasacontrastingstructure. Thenewlyproposedmandaibuildingisamarketwithsomeopen spacesthatwillactasbreakpointsforpeople.Thecentralopen spaceisthegreatestofthethreeopenspaces.Thisopenspace canhostanartexhibit,streetplays,meetingsofurbansketchers oramusicalprogram.

Thevegetableandfruitmarketisdistributedintotwostructures. Theroofforthemarketareaisabambootrussandasmallopen spacewithseatingprovidedinthesmallopenspaces.Theseating areaisshadedbyatreecanopy;itcanbeusedasabreakpoint.

Inthisway,thenewmandaiofferedisnotonlyamarket,butalso aplatformforvariousactivities.

ChandigarhiswellknownforitsarchitectureanddesignbyarchitectssuchasLeCorbusier,PierreJeanneret,JaneDrew,andMaxwell Fry.TheMasterPlanbyLeCorbusierwasbroadlysimilartotheonepreparedbyAlbertMayerandMathewNovicki,exceptthatthe shapeofthecityplanwasmodifiedfromonewithacurvingroadnetworktoarectangularshapewithagridironpatternforthefast trafficroads,besidesreducingitsareaforreasonsofeconomy.Thesiteforthecity'stouristinformationcenterliesintheCapitol Complex.Withtheuseofarticles,photos,videodisplays,exhibitions,andinstallations,thistouristcenterdisseminatesknowledge aboutthehistoryandarchitectureofthecity.Thisstructureneedsopenspacesandseatingplacesbecausepeopleofvariousages, students,andprofessionalsusethislocation.

Theminimalistdesignphilosophyisused todesignthetourisminformationcenter. Thespacesusedfordisplayand exhibitionaremadetobeopenand spacious.Someofthewallsaretallerand thickerthantheresttoaccentuatethe useofcolorsandmaterials.Areplicaof oneofLeCorbusier'spaintingsisusedto

Thewinddirectionforthecityisnorthwestto southeast,andthecityliesinacompositeclimate zone.Thewindowopeningsandspacesare designedaccordingly.

JoglekarfarmhouseisproposedinBhukumwhichisontheoutskirtsofPunecity.Thesitelocationisfullofleafytreesandisa contouredsitewiththehighestpointbeing100mandthelowestbeing88m.Theshortersidesofthesiteareconnectedtothemain roads.Theclientwantedtohavealeisurelyexperienceinthisarea.Afamilyroomalongthedeckoverlookingthegreenareais providedwithinthefarmhouseforthatpurpose.Inaddition,alivingroomwithadiningareaisprovidedonthefrontside,nextto thekitchenandstoragearea.Twobedroomsonthelowergroundfloorandtwoontheupperfloorareplannedwithattachedtoilets. Aswell,aserviceroomislocatedonthefrontside.Thefrontsideofthefarmiswellconnectedtothemainroadandaparkingarea isgiventothefrontwithcertainlandscapesandrestareas.

InNovember2018,aworkshopcalled"BarcelonaStep-by-Step"washeldatEscolaTècnicaSuperiord'ArquitecturadeBarcelonaThe workshop'semphasiswasonresearchingBarcelona'sarchitecturalandurbanplanninghistory.Theoutcomewastogainknowledge abouthowalocation'slanguageandculturecaninfluencedesignandconstructiontechnologies.Thestudentswhoparticipatedin theworkshopwererequiredtogiveapresentationattheendoftheclassoutlininghowtheyunderstoodthecity.ThegroupIworked withemployedtheconceptofthesoundscapeinthepresentationsinceeachlocationhasadistinctivesoundthatcanbeusedto distinguishitthroughouttheday.Withtheuseofacity'ssoundtrack,pictures,andsketches,thecityofBarcelonawasportrayed.For eachillustration'ssoundscape,aQRcodeisincluded.

PlazadetorosdelasArenas,Barcelona

LasArenas,thehistoricbullringinPlaçaEspanya,isnowoneofthemostsignificantandwell-liked commercialareasinthecity,drawingbothlocalsandtourists.Oneofthemostsignificantbullringsin Spain,itshistoryasabullringdatesbackto1900whenitwasconstructedbythearchitectAugustFont iCarrerasintheclassicNeo-Mudejarstyle.Inadditiontobullfighting,thearenahasexperiencedalot oftryingtimesthroughoutBarcelona'shistory,includingservingasarepublicansidebarracksduring theCivilWar.Later,itservedasthelocationforfestivals,circuses,andboxing.Inthe1940sand50s,it wasequippedwithadetachablevelodrometoenablecyclingeventstobeheld,atatime whencompetitivesportsstartedtobecomefashionableinCatalansociety.

TheChurchofSantaAnna,Barcelona

WalkingthroughBarcelona'shistoriccenterwillbringyoutothisstunningcathedral,whichstillhas someRomanesquefeaturesinsideandastrikingGothiccloisterthatoncebelongedtothemonastery ofthesamename,whichisnowmostlyruined.TheJerusalem-basedOrderoftheHolySepulchre constructedtheChurchofSantaAna(SaintAnna)in1177.Withitscross-shapedfloorplanandsquare apse,whichwascrownedbyadomethatwasdamagedbyfireinthe20thcentury,thebuilding'score stillfeatures12th-centuryarchitecturalfeatures.SantaAnnaisanotherillustrationofhowarchitecture canchange.Thereisacourtyardandagardensurroundingthischurch.Aseatingareaforarestaurant islocatedononesideofthecourtyard'scorridor.
