Welcome to the Living Lobby Art Master Series at Conrad Bali, Our dream of developing East Lounge into a living and breathing space for art has come to fruition this year. We have sourced, what we believe to be, the best of Indonesian art and culture, showcasing both up-and-coming artists as well as iconic favorites so you, our guest, can connect with Indonesia as an inspirational destination. This is an opportunity for our guests and local residents to experience the extraordinary indigenous art of Indonesia while also discovering the heritage and philosophies that underpin Indonesian culture, customs and beliefs. The third installment of the Living Lobby Art Master Series 2015 presents a selection of local Balinese photographers’ most recent collections. These photographers capture special and intense moments of the nature and people of Bali, as seen through the eyes of the Balinese. I hope the exhibition we have planned this year will provide you with a new view that is focused in an “easterly” direction. Jean-Sébastien Kling General Manager

CAPTURING THE BALINESE TRIANGULAR HARMONY By Arif Bagus Prasetyo

Living Lobby Art Master Series 2015 features three Balinese photographers: Pandu Adnyana, Tjandra Hutama, and I Nengah Januartha. The title of the Living Lobby Art Master Series 2015 clearly suggested the intention of these photographers as well as the conceptual framework of their photographs. Using the medium of photography, they sought to render visible the Balinese traditional idea of Tri Hita Karana. Tri Hita Karana, a Balinese term which we may translate it literally as “three causes of well-being” or “three reasons for prosperity”, is a traditional philosophy that underlies every facet of Balinese life. Derived from the Balinese spiritualism, beliefs and wisdom, this basic principle of Balinese way of life promotes a “triangular harmony” which consist of the harmony of man and nature, the harmony among men, and the harmony of man and God. It is this idea of “the Balinese triangular harmony” that Pandu, Tjandra, and Januartha tried to capture through the lens of their cameras.

The principle of Tri Hita Karana guides many aspects of Balinese life, from daily rituals, communal cooperation practice, to spatial organization in Balinese architecture. It is also reflected in the Balinese traditional irrigation system, known as subak, which consists of cooperatively managed weirs and canals that draw from a single water source. Tri Hita Karana is credited for the island’s prosperity as a whole, its relatively stable record of development, environmental practices, and the overall quality of life for its residents. Each photographer involved in the current exhibition paid his attention to a particular corner of the three-cornered harmony of Tri Hita Karana. Pandu focuses on the harmony of man and nature, Tjandra has eyes for the harmony among men, and Januartha looks to the harmony of man and God.

Pandu’s interpretation of the harmony of man and nature is expressed in the photographs of natural sceneries. His dramatic, beautiful pictures of natural landscapes reflect a deep, intimate, and meaningful connection between man (represented by the photographer’s gaze or the appearance of man-made objects) and nature. Pandu brings new life to the nature of Bali through photographic works with aesthetic beauty, depicting natural scenes in such a way that give viewers a sense of their tenacious life force and perseverance. “I try to express my mood and feelings of emptiness, tranquility, peace and beauty of

the nature. In composing image, I choose the subject by trying to find the most unique foreground. Sometimes I already brought the idea, however mostly go with the flow. For photography preparation I do scout the location, read forecast and tide chart – if the location is on the bay,” Pandu said. Pandu’s photographic landscapes and seascapes evoke the harmony of human beings and their environment. In a magical and majestic appeal, they call for human great responsibility to conserve the nature and keep the sustainability and balance of the environment.

Tjandra expresses his interpretation of the harmony among men through the photographs of Balinese people. His photographic works are the attempts to capture the fleeting moods and expressions of the subjects. More than just documentation, his photographs show the efforts of the photographer to reveal something about the soul of the subjects. These efforts are never neutral, because they require the primacy of the photographer who exercise a “close reading” to his subjects.

Powerful portraits are among Tjandra’s photographic works. His portraits surreptitiously declare the traces of the persons or personalities they portrayed. In these portraits, however, facts about persons and their personalities are displayed as “fictions”, which requires viewers to complete the stories to make the portraits meaningful. The suggestive forces of the “fictions” rely on the strength of involvement of the photographer. Rather than revealing the subject, Tjandra works expose the intimacy shared by the photographer with his sitter.

Januartha’s photographs of various Balinese Hinduism rituals evoke the idea of the harmony of man and God. Januartha portrayed sacred events of Balinese religious tradition in such a dramatic way that strongly supports the idea of Bali as, in the words of Clifford Geertz, “the theatre state”. Januartha’s passion as if overwhelmed with the tension between the spell of ecstatic moments in Balinese religious culture and the need to tell the stories about them. “Hopefully I would always be a story-teller through the medium of photography. It is an unparalleled satisfaction for me to share a greater

intimacy with my photographic objects and produce photographs that tell stories,” Januartha said. Living Lobby Art Master Series 2015, Tri Hita Karana reflects a vision of the search for harmony behind the complexity of the inner and outer world of contemporary Bali. This search for harmony is embodied in the dialectic of forms, colors and tones in the works of three Balinese photographers, creating photographic compositions which correspond to the profundity of their thinking and feeling. It is an intense search of the soul of Bali.
