Welcome to Bali

Bali is situated in the heart of the Indo-Pacific, the world’s richest marine biographic zone. Here the ocean is home to over 2,000 species of fish as well as turtles, eels, lobster, crab, shrimp and nudibranchs. On top of this we see Mimic octopus, scorpionfish, Rhinopias, Mandarinfish and ghost pipefish to name a few. The pelagics inhabiting Bali’s waters include Manta rays, occasional Whalesharks, and Mola-Mola, the weird but wonderful Ocean sunfish.

Bali’s best dive sites, scattered around the island, offer great diversity – there is something for everyone. From vertical walls to sand slopes, steel and wooden shipwrecks, limestone shorelines and black volcanic outcrops, peaceful bays and ripping currents, deep coral-covered ridges, shallow seagrass beds and big bommies, accessed by both shore and boat diving.

The reefs in Bali contain both hard and soft corals, Gorgonian and other seafans, coral bushes and sponges including some massive barrel varieties.

Welcome to AquaMarine Diving - Bali In 1999, Annabel Thomas (PADI OWSI 462621) and Wayan Suanda (PADI MSDT 460177) established AquaMarine Diving - Bali (PADI 5 Star Resort 6344). Has been in continual ownership and management by Annabel and Wayan since then. AquaMarine is the only British owner-operated dive company in Bali and Indonesia’s first Project AWARE Go ECO Operator. In 2012 AquaMarine was awarded the PADI Green Star Award for demonstrating a commitment to underwater conservation. AquaMarine caters to both individuals and groups, and specialises in providing custom-made programmes. We can combine diving with non-diving activities and offer short or long programmes according to your personal interests and preferences. All of AMD-B’s dive staff know every dive site we offer like the back of their hands, and we take pride in our level of customer service. 2

PADI Bubblemaker 1 pool dive: USD45 / 2 ocean dives: USD130

1 Day Intro Adventure Diving PROGRAMME 1 dive: USD115 / 2 dives: USD130 Min age: 10yo AquaMarine designed this programme for new divers who either don’t have time for a PADI Course or would just like a taste of scuba diving. We conduct this on Tulamben Bay’s world-famous USAT Liberty Shipwreck or at Blue Lagoon, a favourite location with underwater photographers. There’s no better place to fall in love with diving than Bali!

Brushing up your skills? Scuba Refresher

1 pool dive: USD45 / 2 ocean dives: USD135 If you feel your scuba skills and knowledge are a bit rusty or you have been out of the water for a while, we can organise a Refresher to brush up your skills. This can be conducted as either a pool or Open Water session.

Min age: 8yo Let AquaMarine introduce your children to scuba diving! The PADI Bubblemaker programme is for children aged 8yo and above. It’s fun, easy and safe and is a great way for younger children to join in the family fun of diving. A Bubblemaker can be conducted in either the pool or the ocean to a maximum depth of 2 metres. Tulamben Bay is the perfect site!

Daily Dive Trips Come and join us for a Day Trip to one of Bali’s best dive sites! All trips are scheduled as 2 dives and include transport to and from the south Bali area, lunch and diver medical insurance. 3rd dives can also be pre-booked for most Day Trips.

North East Coast Tulamben Bay /USAT Liberty Shipwreck 2 dives: USD100 World famous for the 120 metre USAT Liberty Shipwreck, Drop-off and Coral Garden, Tulamben Bay offers incredible shore diving with very easy conditions – perfect for underwater photography. The resident marinelife includes Leaf scorpionfish, Bumphead parrotfish, pygmy seahorses and a huge school of Big-Eyed trevally. Suitable for all experience levels, including snorkellers. Tulamben Area 2 dives: USD110 We use a local outrigger or “jukung” to access the Tulamben Area dives sites at Batu Kelebit, Palung-Palung and Emerald. The marinelife is diverse as well as having a variety of sea fans, coral bushes and sponges. The sand is lighter than in Tulamben Bay, providing an excellent colour contrast. Large pelagics are often sighted here such as Dogtooth tuna, schools of barracuda, reef sharks and Bumphead parrotfish. Amed 2 dives: USD105 Amed is a sand beach with easy conditions that offers both reef and muck diving. The reefs just offshore from the quiet fishing and salt-panning village yield many unexpected treasures. Near Lipah Bay, there is a 20 metre coral-encrusted wreck of a steel freighter. Suitable for all experience levels, including snorkellers. ©Bogard

AquaMarineDiving.com | info@AquaMarineDiving.com

North West Coast Menjangan Island 2 dives: USD115 Menjangan became Bali’s first internationally-known dive location in 1978, famous for its wall diving. Although the best diving in Menjangan is said to be from April to November (during the southeast monsoon), the island can be dived year-round as it offers some of the most protected diving in Bali. The clarity of the water can at times be amazing; arguably the best in Bali with frequent horizontal visibility of 50m+ in October and November. Suitable for all experience levels, including snorkellers. An overnight stay is recommended when diving at Menjangan due to travel time from south Bali. Please get in touch for more details.

Nusa Penida ©Bogard

Manta Point 2 dives: USD145 SD, Ped, Sental 2 dives: USD130 Nusa Penida 2 dives: USD130 (inc Mola-Mola sites in season) Nusa Penida is the largest of the 3 islands off the south east coast of Bali and offers drift diving in mild to strong currents. The water can be cold but often startlingly clear with gorgeous corals, prolific fish, turtles, reef sharks and from July to November, Mola-Mola the Ocean sunfish. Manta rays are seen here all year round. Diving here is suitable for AOW and for OW divers with experience.

Daily Dive Trips East Coast ©Rocky

Gili Selang 2 dives: USD140 This small island lies off Bali’s eastern point and, like all exposed sites, can have ripping currents. We therefore restrict these trips to expert divers only. The interesting and rich sand slope to the north of the island has some stands of hard branching corals and occasional bommies; the deeper areas of the slope are more protected and home to sea fans, soft corals, barrel sponges and coral bushes. Along this sand slope you may well see schools of Big-Eyed trevally, White-rip reef sharks, and Bumphead parrotfish.

Muck SiteS ©Rocky

Blue Lagoon/Jepun 2 dives: USD100 Blue Lagoon is a small bay with a steep white sand beach, located just north east of Padangbai. A favourite with underwater photographers - the fish life here is amazing! A large Napoleon wrasse is occasionally sighted, and the area is home to several kinds of reef shark, stonefish, Moray and Blue ribbon Eels, nudibranchs, squid, octopus, Leaf scorpionfish in every hue and Stargazers, Giant frogfish and cuttlefish. Suitable for all experience levels, including snorkellers. Mimpang/Tepekong 2 dives: USD110 Some of Bali’s most stunning diving is experienced at these sites. Here you will find good diversity of fish, a variety of sharks and frequent pelagic visitors set against chiselled black walls with beautiful, healthy corals, and good visibility. Due to variable conditions, these sites are for experienced divers only. Gili Biaha 2 dives: USD120 A little further north is AquaMarine’s favourite dive site, the small crescent shaped island of Gili Biaha. AquaMarine is one of the few companies to offer diving here. There is a beautiful and healthy reef around the island, a rocky slope in the north and a wall around the southern part. Blue-ring octopus are sighted here as well as Mola-Mola on occasion. As we can experience strong currents and surges here, this site is for experienced divers only.

2 dives: From USD105 For muck divers and underwater photographers we can arrange Day Dive Trips to Seraya Slope or Amed (Ghost Bay). We also offer diving at Secret Bay and Puri Jati on the north west and north coast but would recommend an overnight stay at each of these locations. Get in touch with us for more information about retaining one of our experienced spotters for your dive day, as well as further information on each of the dive sites. Prices are per person and include: Transfers to/from south Bali, diving as stated, PADI Divemaster or above, land and boat transport where applicable, diver medical insurance, mask/snorkel, booties/fins, tanks/ weight, lunch, bottled water, beach towel use, local taxes, fees and porterage. Prices are based on a minimum of 2 dives and are subject to change.

This trip can be done on its own or combined with Manta Point – an ideal combination! Currents can be strong and changeable, with the Mola-Mola being seen at depth thefore we only offer this trip to AOW divers with 20+ dives or OW divers with experience.

©Silcock

AquaMarineDiving.com | info@AquaMarineDiving.com

BARBEQUE Trips 2 dives: USD110 – 120 + Barbeque Lunch This Day Trip can either be a combination of 1 dive at Mimpang or Tepekong and 1 dive at Blue Lagoon or 2 dives at Blue Lagoon. This will depend on diver experience levels. After diving, you will love the barbeque lunch of grilled fish, satay, salads and Balinese vegetables!

Diving with Mola Mola (Ocean sunfish)

©Schnitman

In the past, aggressive divers routinely disturbed Ocean sunfish at cleaning stations. This resulted in them spending less time near shore and greatly limited the number of sightings. Records from the early ‘90s show that Mola-Mola were seen in far greater numbers, were more at ease, and remained stationary at cleaning stations for longer periods. This allowed divers to enjoy their natural behavior with longer encounters with the mysterious Ocean sunfish. The Mola-Mola Code of Conduct is designed to provide an enjoyable and safe diving experience while ensuring the lowest impact on Bali’s visiting Ocean sunfish. The aim of this Code of Conduct is to ensure they can settle onto cleaning stations without being disturbed. Once settled, they remain for longer periods offering better quality interaction for divers. We hope they can rebound to their previous high numbers.

Code of Conduct • Approach Mola-Mola slowly within its field of view • If Mola-Mola are entering the cleaning station, do not approach until cleaning has begun and they are stationary for minimum of 60 seconds • When at the cleaning station, maintain a minimum of 3 metres from the closest Ocean sunfish • Maintain a minimum of 10 metres when it is not yet cleaning and approaching the reef • DO NOT TOUCH. You will remove mucus protecting it from infection • Do not swim behind an Ocean sunfish as this can startle it • Do not swim under an Ocean sunfish as your bubbles may disturb cleaning behaviour

• Do not block its escape route off the reef or pathway onto a cleaning station • If a Mola-Mola approaches, remain still • Do not use flash photography • Do not use personal underwater motorized propulsion vehicles or make loud noises • Be courteous to other divers and restrict your viewing time to 5 minutes when other groups are present • Always follow directions of your dive guide • AquaMarine restricts group sizes to a maximum of 4 divers and 1 guide. For more than 1 group, entries will be staggered to avoid overcrowding

Dive Site Information Menjangan Island (13D/12N, 8D/7N): Part of West Bali National Park, Menjangan Island is famous for its coral walls with easy conditions, warm waters and great visibility that can reach 50m+. Due to the white sand and good visibility, there is usually a lot of sunlight to bring out the bright colours of the schooling fishes surrounding you. The walls are covered with a multitude of gorgonian fans, soft corals and sponges. Puri Jati (13D/12N, 8D/7N): For those who’ve wondered but have yet to try it, and for those who adore it: Puri Jati is Bali’s current muck-diving hotspot! Visibility is 5-25m. A wide, gentle brown sand slope with patches of seagrass and tufts of lavender soft corals hiding many juvenile batfishes and lionfishes, rare fishes, crustaceans, cephalopods (including Wonderpus, Blue-ring and Mimic octopus), and fascinating sand dwellers. Tulamben Bay (13D/12N, 8D/7N): World-famous for the 120m USAT Liberty Shipwreck (possibly the world’s easiest wreck dive); The Drop-off/Wall, an old lava flow from Mount Agung, at the opposite end of the bay from the Wreck (about a 10 minute walk between the two sites), and the Coral Garden which is a shallow reef running along the middle section of Tulamben beach. Tulamben Bay offers incredible shore-diving with very easy conditions - perfect for divers of all levels. Amed (13D/12N, 7D/6N): The sites around Amed, including the 20m Japanese Wreck, offer many different kinds of sponges and gorgonians, and marinelife that includes everything from White-tip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasses, occasional big trevallys, butterflyfishes, bannerfishes, snappers, fusiliers and triggerfishes to gobies and shrimp as well as anemones with attendant clownfishes, schools of barracuda and Blue-spotted rays. Many different kinds of parrotfishes, angelfishes, surgeonfishes and moray eels. Nusa Penida inc Manta Point (13D/12N, 7D/6N): Nusa Penida is the largest of three islands lying off Bali’s east coast and offers great drift-diving. Due to ocean currents, the water here is fairly cold but often startlingly clear, with some impressive coral formations and prolific fishes, occasional turtles, sharks and in mid-July to November each year, Mola-Mola (Ocean sunfish). Manta Point has Manta rays year-round. Mimpang/Tepekong (13D/12N, 7D/6N): Amuk Bay has some of Bali’s best diving. Mimpang is three rock pinnacles that break the surface; the southern, deeper area offers a spectacular wall with profuse corals, many fishes and sometimes pelagics. The breath-taking diving at Tepekong, a 300m long rock, has steep walls, cold water and some currents. In the famous Canyon, with its swirling waters and dramatic, craggy walls, you may see schooling fishes, possibly Mola-Mola (in season), White-tip reef sharks and turtles. Blue Lagoon (13D/12N, 7D/6N): A small bay with a steep white sand beach, located just outside Padangbai. The white sand bottom, which slopes gradually to 22m, has scattered rocks, soft corals and a huge area of Staghorn coral. The smaller fishlife here is amazing. There is also a large Napoleon wrasse, several kinds of reef sharks, stonefishes, nudibranchs, rays, squid, cuttlefishes and octopus, Blue ribbon and moray eels, stargazers, crocodilefishes and Leaf scorpionfishes of every hue. Gili Biaha (13D/12N, 7D/6N): AquaMarine is one of only a few companies to offer dive trips to this small crescent-shaped island. Some of Bali’s most stunning diving: vast numbers and great diversity of fishes, abundant sharks and frequent pelagic visitors, set against chiselled black walls with beautiful, healthy corals and often great visibility. There is a beautiful and healthy reef around the island, a rocky slope on the north side and a rugged black wall around the southern part. Gili Selang (13D/12N, 7D/6N): This small island on Bali’s eastern point offers both protected reef-diving and drift-diving with some bigger fishes. The interesting and rich sand slope to the north of the island has some stands of hard branching corals and occasional bommies, the deeper areas of the slope are more protected and therefore home to sea fans, soft corals, barrel sponges and coral bushes. ©Postlethwaite & Kraus

Min age: 12yo 2 Nights / 3 Dives: USD120 You will be amazed how sites look different at night and how the marinelife differs from the daytime. The Night Diver Speciality teaches you the techniques, procedures, and correct use of equipment for night-diving. The added bonus is that AMD-B conducts this Specialty in Tulamben Bay! Multi-level/Computer Diver Min age: 12yo 1 Day / 2 Dives: USD120 This Specialty course will help you to maximise your dive time so you get the most from every dive. Underwater Naturalist Diver 1 Day / 2 Dives: USD95 The PADI Underwater Naturalist builds on your knowledge of the underwater world. You will learn techniques for exploring and entering intact wrecks as well as avoiding common hazards, and equipment considerations.

Beyond Bali

ALOR (FLORES) Diving in the region of East Nusa Tenggara is known for its currents and unspoiled walls. The appeal of Alor’s diving includes remoteness, the huge schools of fish and pelagics, clear waters with pristine corals reefs. The scenery above the waterline is spectacular with coconut palms and pure white sandy beaches, and traditional villages built half way up the mountains. AMBON (MALUKU) Ambon is undoubtedly famous for world class muck diving with a huge array of resident critters that can be spotted during long shallow dives with most sites close to the shore. There are also sites across the island that offer high quality wide-angle photo opportunities with diverse marinelife. Ambon Bay has a 134m Dutch cargo shipwreck (recently identified as the Duke of Sparta). The foredeck is at 32m and the bow at over 40m. BUNAKEN NATIONAL PARK (NORTH SULAWESI) The area of Bunaken National Park offers some of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world, with outstanding varieties of coral and reef fishes, with world-class drift and wall diving. The Park itself consists of five islands: Bunaken, Manado Tua, Nain, Mantehage and Siladen, as well as a portion of the North Sulawesi mainland. Tucked away on the steep walls,

you’ll find an abundance of invertebrates and small marinelife. With visibility around 25m and water temperature 26-30°C, this is a favourite destination for underwater photographers and naturalists from around the world. In addition to the clear waters around the Marine Park, Manado Bay also has some muck sites and there is a 60m shipwreck lying at 40m which can be accessed from the shore. CENDRAWASIH BAY (WEST PAPUA) This has become one of the most popular diving destinations in Indonesia and is now included in several liveaboards’ West Papua itineraries. Near Nabire the resident whalesharks often visit the fishermen’s floating rafts. On the journey to this area, liveaboards visit the WWII Japanese wrecks on the Manokwari coast - more than 20 wrecks have been located. Of these, the five wrecks that can be dived are: Pasir Putih, Pillbox, Cross, Mupi and Shinwa Maru. GILI ISLANDS (LOMBOK) Gili Trawangan is the largest and most popular of the three Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno, Air). The three islands are located off the north west coast of Lombok in the strait between Lombok and Bali. The Gili Islands offer interesting scuba diving for all divers (novice to experienced) and boast an extensive Biorock reef. This backpacker haven offers an unhurried pace with no motorised transport. KOMODO

AquaMarineDiving.com | info@AquaMarineDiving.com

This World Heritage Site has beautiful corals, macro critters, lots of pelagics, even mangrove dives ... and Komodo dragons. The corals in the Park are pristine, and marinelife includes Mantas, sharks, turtles, dolphins, dugong, many pelagics, plus tiny pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and frogfish. The sites vary from gentle easy coral slopes to heart pounding adrenalin drifts, from the warm waters of the Flores Sea in the north to the chillier waters down south in the Indian Ocean. The underwater terrain is varied with sheer cliff walls, pinnacles, channels, flat sandy bottoms, underwater plateaus, slopes, caves, and swim-throughs, all with varying colours, sizes and types of coral both hard and soft.

LEMBEH STRAIT Lembeh Strait is a 12 km long stretch of water separating mainland Sulawesi and Lembeh Island. The reputation of Lembeh Strait as a mecca for divers interested in odd and rare macro fauna continues to grow. This pristine section of water in North Sulawesi is home to many unique sea creatures which include pygmy seahorse, Mimic octopus, ghost pipefish, as well as other larger species. It is a fantastic dive area for underwater photographers and the diversity of smaller creatures ensures many memorable photo opportunities. LOMBOK There are 2 distinct diving areas on mainland Lombok. As well as snorkelling, swimming and scuba diving, Sekotong offers a few topside activities which makes it perfect for couples and families who just want to relax and enjoy the atmosphere! Belongas Bay - with its challenging dive sites - is where the misconceptions about diving South Lombok’s coastline come from. Diving the “Magnet” and “Cathedral” is only for more adventurous and experienced divers, but the more protected dive sites around the Bay are suitable for less experienced divers. Scuba diving here you’ll find an unspoiled underwater paradise!

©Buxo

RAJA AMPAT Known for its biodiversity, the marinelife in Raja Ampat is outstanding. The four beautiful islands (Raja Ampat means Four Kings) are surrounded by spectacular reefs swarming with fish. Brilliantly hued soft corals and sea fans, sponges, tunicates, crinoids and hard corals create a habitat for tiny shrimp, giant clams, nudibranchs, and sea stars while turtles, schools of tangs, runners and triggerfish roam the reef. Dense schools of snapper and sweetlips hang effortlessly in brisk currents and Wobbegong and Epaulette sharks lurk beneath. Mangrove forests fringe the islands, filtering the sunlight onto the corals just below the surface. Even more remote and still being explored are Fakfak and Triton Bay.

WAKATOBI The Wakatobi National Park is named after four islands, Wangi Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko all in the Tukangbesi archipelago off the south east coast of Sulawesi. Its remoteness is one of its greatest attractions both above and below the surface. Pristine reefs and vast marine diversity can be found around the islands and atolls of Wakatobi with hundreds of dives sites, many of which remain unexplored. Throughout this region the diving consists of extensive reefs with some dramatic drop-offs abounding with sea fans and gigantic sponges. AquaMarineDiving.com | info@AquaMarineDiving.com

Insurance

Keep in mind that although you are covered by our insurance whilst diving with us in Bali, if you plan to dive elsewhere in the future, it’s a good idea to have your own diving insurance. We recommend DAN (http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/) who provide insurance for divers in different regions. Be sure to sign up from your own region/place of residence and include AquaMarine’s referral code (DS-0239) to assist DAN in tracking information about how, where and why divers sign up. DAN now offers comprehensive short term protection plans (10 days: USD40; 30 days: USD50) - ideal for your annual diving getaway.
