Pangdemonium 2019 Season
2
We live in a world of growing complexity and contradiction. Technology has made the world smaller, connected people, shrunk distances. It has enhanced efficiency, increased productivity, improved lives. But at times, it has also divided humankind, exacerbated social ills, and created borders in a borderless world. As societies, we’ve had to grapple with the good and bad. As a corporate, we’ve asked ourselves what we can do to harness advances
Season Sponsor
Season Sponsor in technology for the good of mankind, and to improve lives and livelihoods. These questions are the driving force behind the bank’s ethos – Live More, Bank Less. This is why DBS is proud to continue our partnership with Pangdemonium, a theatre company that explores modern-day societal issues in an authentic and artistic manner. Our hope is that a greater understanding of the world we live in will spur us into action, in big and small ways, as we forge ahead towards a brighter tomorrow.

Pangdemonium 2019 Season 4
The Future, as they say, is Now
And we’re not talking about the World Cup.
Artistic Directors’ Message
2018 has been a dramatic year on the global stage.
We gasped in astonishment as Malaysians were engulfed in a storm of political change, and cried foul as poisons rained down on Syrian civilians...
5
Pangdemonium 2019 Season 6
We cheered as Cosby and Weinstein came undone at the hands of America’s soap-operatic justice system, and howled at the Indian authorities’ impotence in dealing with yet more shocking rapes. We thanked the gods when 12 Thai boys trapped in a cave were reunited with their families, and prayed in vain as thousands of immigrant children in the US were torn from theirs. We got all teary watching Kim and Moon kiss and make up, while in our own backyard, we had the pornographic pleasure of gawping at the first date/ foreplay/prenup between the Fat Titan and Captain Spamerica - will this Infinity War have a happy ending?
And for every other piece of news this year that we have found disturbing, distressing, or depressing, we took comfort in the sliver of sunshine that is the reunion of ABBA. We’re living in turbulent times, to say the least. We could stick our heads in the sand, or be voyeurs watching the world burn, or be obnoxious “keyboard warriors”. Or we could choose to do something. That’s why Pangdemonium’s 2019 Season is themed “Present Tense/Future Perfect” – because life is precious, our world is fragile, and with all the crap happening around us, we have to live in the present, learn from our past, and take action to work towards a better future. Idealistic, perhaps, but if we don’t try, then what’s the point of it all?
Artistic Directors’ Message
With the invaluable support of our Season Sponsor, DBS, our hotly-anticipated 2019 Season kicks off with Late Company, an explosive exposé of cyberbullying in our age of alienation; followed by the world premiere of This Is What Happens To Pretty Girls, a powerful new play revolving around #MeToo; and rounds off with the outrageous Tony Award-winning Urinetown: The Musical, which strips bare everyone from politicians to populists, and everything from public relations to public toilets. An eclectic and electrifying ensemble of stories that will make us look at ourselves truthfully, point the way forward, and kick our asses into action.
Pangdemonium is the only theatre company in Singapore offering a Season Ticket, demonstrating our dedication to giving you more pang for your buck with our ass-kicking adventures in theatre*. We are extremely grateful for the faith and commitment of our loyal supporters, who have helped us exponentially grow our Season Ticket subscriptions over the years. Our 2019 Season Ticket is only on sale until 31 December 2018, so there’s no time like the present – get off your asses and go grab yours at www.sistic.com.sg now! Here’s to the future.

Late Company
Debora and Michael’s dinner guests are late. About one year late. That’s because it’s taken all this time for the couple to even dare to come face to face with Tamara and Bill, and their teenage son Curtis - the bully they believe is responsible for the suicide of their own son Joel...
11
Pangdemonium 2019 Season
For Debora and Michael, tonight is a nerve-racking step towards coming to terms with their loss; for Tamara and Bill, it’s a meeting they’ve been dreading but never expected to ever happen; and for Curtis, it’s going to be the worst dinner of his life.
Redemption, forgiveness and closure are on the menu, but first they all have to get through the main course of blame, shame and retribution. As everyone takes a turn in the hot seat for their real or imagined role in the tragedy, painful accusations are served and shocking secrets are spilled. And all through dinner, the spectre of Joel looms over a night that will change everyone’s lives forever.
“Sucker punch of a play. Comic and excruciating, fizzes with authenticity. Utterly transfixing” The Telegraph
12
Late Company
“Powerful, superb drama about the devastating aftershocks of cyberbullying” Time Out
Chillingly comic, nail-bitingly tense and provocatively polarizing, Late Company shines a stark light on our mutating 21st century society and volatile youth culture, and asks the urgent question: are we too late?
“This dinner party from hell serves up the full gamut of human emotions. A terrific play. GO!” The Times

This Is What Happens To Pretty Girls

Pangdemonium 2019 Season
Millions around the world are being pulled into the #MeToo minefield and the Time’s Up tsunami. We are experiencing a redefining period in our history, where women are finding their voices in a way never before witnessed. Then there are the many voices that are never heard, stories never told, secrets never shared, and truths never revealed. Pangdemonium has commissioned the world premiere of This Is What Happens To Pretty Girls to be one such story, with
many sides, many secrets, and many truths, each one demanding to be told; a story about women and men who have not been liberated by the revolution, and whose lives perch on the knife edge between damnation and deliverance. Playwright Ken Kwek (award-winning director of Unlucky Plaza) has conducted interviews with more than 100 women and men, and, drawing from their stories of violence, heartbreak and survival, created a provocative, poignant and powerful piece of theatre for our times.
18
This Is What Happens To Pretty Girls
“This play is partly a journey of my own reckoning with the #metoo movement. I see this as being as much a men’s issue if not more so – as it is a women’s issue.” Ken Kwek Playwright
In this new dawn of female empowerment and gender equality that is galvanizing our society, This Is What Happens To Pretty Girls is an explosive and timely new play that will pull apart preconceptions, confound conspiracy theories, and make you question yourself and the people you think you know. You have been warned.

Urinetown: The Musical
Winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is the hilarious musical satire that takes the piss out of the legal system, capitalism, populism, bureaucracy, political corruption, and musicals themselves!
23
Pangdemonium 2019 Season 24
“For anarchic, firstrate comic relief, get thee to Urinetown!” Time Out
A fictional “most expensive city in the world” is facing a “cross-border water crisis”, leading to a government ban on private lavatories, and the erection of pay-to-pee public toilets operated by the megalomaniacal CEO of Urine Good Company, Caldwell B. Cladwell. Breaking the strict laws against gratuitous public peeing means urination ruination, with offenders being put in cold storage in the dreaded and mysterious “Urinetown”, never to be seen again.
When threatened with yet another hike on the pee-fee, the poor citizens, having endured overwhelming oppression and bursting bladders, can no longer hold it in, and stage a revolution. A handsome hero, with the heroically handsome name of Bobby Strong, leads the rebels in their fight for the right to pee for free “wherever they like, whenever they like, for as long as they like, and with whomever they like!” And, in true musical theatre style, he still finds the time and energy to fall hopelessly in love with the honeylicious Hope Cladwell, who (shock! horror! spoiler!) turns out to be the daughter of the dastardly Caldwell B. Cladwell!
Urinetown: The Musical
“Audacious, exhilarating, riotous, hilarious, sensational…The most gripping and galvanizing theatre experience.” New York Times
Will our Number One hero save the day and bring relief to the people? Maybe! Will love be dealt a royal flush against evil? Possibly! Will there be more toilet jokes? You betcha!
Urinetown catapults musical theatre into a new dimension, with its warped (but uncannily familiar) depiction of a dystopian world, a playlist packed with outrageous songs, and a cunning knack of making you laugh ‘til you wet your pants.
“A fresh, unique, original, impudent, colourful, exciting, irreverent, surprising and wonderful musical” New York Observer

About Pangdemonium Pangdemonium is a proudly Singaporean theatre company with a mission to tell stories on the stage which are challenging, inspiring, relevant, accessible, and above all, of the highest artistic, entertainment and production values, in a league with the very best of theatre internationally.
About Pangdemonium
RENT, 2017
37
Pangdemonium 2019 Season 38
Rule #1 of theatre is that it has to be entertaining – but it is capable of achieving so much more. Pangdemonium believes that theatre should strive to enrich, enlighten, and empower; it should surprise, stir, and stimulate; it should be aspirational and inspirational, passionate and compassionate; it should impact on audiences viscerally, intellectually, emotionally. With this in mind, Pangdemonium tells stories that tackle challenging issues, ask difficult questions, provoke constructive debate, and hopefully lead us all on a path towards discoveries of our communal human experience; that jolt us all from a collective passivity
and make us take positive action, that expose us all for our flaws and frailties, and dare us to change; that help us see someone else’s point of view, and share in someone’s else’s journey; that celebrate life, and champion struggle, survival and the human spirit; that make us count our blessings, appreciate this world more, and strive to live more meaningful lives; stories that Singaporeans can relate to and identify with, and at the same time, have a global resonance and universal significance.
In short, we tell stories that live up to our motto ‘Ass-kicking adventures in theatre’ – because theatre should give us all a muchneeded kick in the nether regions once in a while.
About Pangdemonium
Since our inception in 2010, a key component of our mission has been to uncover new talent and to give opportunities to aspiring artists and technical practitioners to work in a professional, challenging and nurturing environment in our productions. We firmly believe that this kind of “sowing seeds ethos is the way to keep the Singapore arts scene dynamic, fresh and progressive. Our work is garnering rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, and winning prestigious theatre accolades. We are steadily growing in size, strength and stature, with our acclaimed annual Season Ticket motivating more and more people to commit themselves to support our work. As a theatre company we are rapidly making a name for ourselves as a vibrant and vital voice in our community.
Pangdemonium aims to continue to prove that Singapore is able to produce theatre that can achieve international standards, theatre that Singaporeans can be proud of, and to inspire more and more people to embrace theatre as a way of life.
