2018 Season
A MESSAGE FROM OUR SEASON SPONSOR 2018 is a milestone year for DBS as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. Standing at this juncture of history, and taking stock of the last five decades, we can’t help but be a little emotional at how far our nation – this place we call home – has come. Neither does it escape us that this home we’ve built, this little red dot, punches above her weight. For all of us at DBS, this stands out because in so many ways, our own story is intertwined with Singapore’s. From financing Singapore’s first shopping mall, to nurturing businesses and helping individuals realise their dreams, we’ve witnessed and participated in the rise of this citystate, through tumultuous and prosperous times.
It is our privilege to present Pangdemonium’s 2018 season, with its theme of HOPE and HOME. No matter how uncertain times are, there are constants that matter, whether one’s roots, or the value of kinship and friendship. It is our hope that these will continue to stand the test of time, anchor us and propel us forward. We invite you to join us in unleashing the spark within each one of us and boldly taking on what lies ahead. Sincerely,
Sim S. Lim Singapore Country Head DBS Bank

2018 Season
THERE IS HOPE, TRULY... Unless you live an unusually charmed/sheltered life, 2017 has so far been yet another year riddled with all manner of doom and gloom. In a global climate that’s becoming increasingly fractured and fragile, entire peoples are being divided, displaced and dispossessed, and there is a palpable sense of disillusionment, despair and dread of the future. In these circumstances, it’s all too easy to surrender to cynicism, give into nihilism, and abandon hope altogether. Well, we say screw that. If life is kicking your ass, you gotta kick some ass too. So looking ahead to our exciting 2018 Season (with the support of our wonderful Season Sponsor DBS) Pangdemonium is taking you along on yet more ass-kicking adventures in theatre, with the theme of HOPE & HOME - reminding us all that in the darkest of days, we have to fight tooth and nail to find the light, and when we’ve lost our way, we have to rediscover some sense of hope, and find our way home again. We kick off with the heart wrenching and thought provoking drama The Father, followed by the encore performance of our SIFA 2017 production Dragonflies, and then round off the year with the critically acclaimed, award-winning (and probably our very first truly family-friendly production!) Peter and the Starcatcher. A thrilling threesome of eclectic and exhilarating stories, with all the heart, soul, guts, brain food, and much, much more, that audiences have come to love about our work. Pangdemonium is proud to be the first and only theatre company in Singapore to offer a Season Ticket, demonstrating our commitment to creating consistently top-notch productions year after year; and we are very grateful for the commitment of our loyal Season Ticket subscribers over the years. Subscriptions for our 2017 Season Ticket hit an all-time high, and as we look forward to our sixth official Season, we are thrilled to hit you with our 2018 Season Ticket. So grab yours quick at www.sistic.com.sg, and together, let’s kick 2018’s ass.

2018 Season
“Heartbreaking, devastating and disorientating…Makes your brain hum with the unique potential of theatre: this is the perfect unity of form and content.” - The Independent VICTORIA THEATRE • 2 - 18 MARCH 2018 SINGAPORE PREMIERE André has lost his beloved watch again. His daughter and her husband are behaving very oddly. There is an unseen presence in his home playing cruel tricks on him. And as he fights his demons and drowns in his murky memories, he is beginning to question his own sanity and identity… The Father is a poignant and devastating exploration of a 70-year-old man’s deteriorating mind as he sinks under the frightening weight of dementia, and loses his grip on the sanctuary of his home and security of his loved ones. As his mind unravels and his reality continues to warp, we begin to perceive his morphing, crumbling world the way he does, with family members becoming strangers, and strangers turning out to be something even more sinister. Pangdemonium hopes that this compelling production will inspire people to reach out to those in our community with dementia, as well as their caregivers who are suffering in silence and fear. Nominated for Best Play at the Olivier and Tony Awards, The Father is part family drama, part thriller, part mind-bending puzzle. A tale told with gripping suspense, brutal honesty, and profound compassion, it asks the urgent question: When you’re losing everything you know and love, who will care?
“An unqualified triumph…Will speak to anyone who has watched a relative disappear off into clouds of unknowingness, and to anyone who dreads the terrifying loss of identity caused by Alzheimer’s. In an age that can prolong our lives without ring-fencing our mental faculties, that’s almost everyone.” - The Telegraph “A savagely honest study of dementia…Makes us see things through the confused eyes of one man, as he struggles to make sense of a progressively befuddling world.” - The Guardian

“Poignant and powerful…utterly transformative” - SIFA Blog VICTORIA THEATRE • 18 MAY - 3 JUNE 2018 Written by Stephanie Street Directed by Tracie Pang Starring Adrian Pang Tan Kheng Hua Benjamin Chow Frances Lee Fanny Kee Victoria Mintey Jamil Schulze Rating Advisory 16 (Some mature content and coarse language)
The year is 2021. Climate change is wreaking havoc across the globe. Donald Trump has been re-elected US President for a second term. Brexit is in full effect and causing chaos all over Europe. In the wake of escalating wars in the Middle East, famine in West Africa, and relentless terrorist attacks by radical extremists, the UK - and many nations around the world - has enforced a ban on all immigration. With the coastline around him and life as he knows it crumbling to dust, Leslie Chen is forced to abandon his home in England and move his family back to his birthplace, Singapore. Confronting a country that is a world apart from the one he knew as a child, he is now made to question the meaning of home. As the crises and conflicts escalate, one thing is certain - come hell or high water, and possibly both, he must protect his family. While dragonflies migrate halfway across the world, we, the human race, struggle to embrace our nomadic heritage, our need to move to greener pastures in order to survive. And as global warming, the resurgence of far-right politics and worldwide paranoia make us burn bridges and build walls between communities, families and individuals, we have to ask ourselves: Where do we go from here? Dragonflies is the story of a family fighting for survival in a hostile world, looking for somewhere to call home, and something that might look like hope. Commissioned by the Singapore International Festival of Arts. First performed at the Singapore International Festival of Arts 2017.
“A gripping tale that is, at once, epic and intimate...spectacular performances… deeply empathetic, balancing wry humour with devastating jolts of emotion...” - Crystalwords “A poignant tale of love and family...a moving investigation of humanity, kindness, generosity...points us to a much-needed beacon of hope.” - City Nomads “Excellent script…evocative staging… brilliantly played... “ - Business Times

DRAMA CENTRE THEATRE • 28 SEPTEMBER - 20 OCTOBER 2018 SINGAPORE PREMIERE
Winner of five Tony Awards, Peter and the Starcatcher is a hilarious, hair-raising, and heartwarming prequel to the Peter Pan legend, and a celebration of the innocence, imagination and resilience of the Child. Singapore, 1885: we join Molly, a precocious young Starcatcher-in-training, and three orphans (including a homeless, nameless lad known as ‘Boy’) on a secret mission - a perilous voyage across seas infested by treacherous pirates, fearsome savages, and dubious mermaids, to a faraway island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. All for the sake of the mystical, mythical “starstuff”, a celestial substance so powerful, it must never fall into the wrong hands. With the dastardly Black Stache in hot pursuit, the vengeful Fighting Prawn and Hawking Clam lurking in the deep, and the mysterious Mr Grin hungry for his next meal, will the children survive the dangers, find the elusive Neverland and live happily ever after? Featuring a dozen actors portraying more than 100 unforgettable characters, Pangdemonium’s production of Peter and the Starcatcher will be specially adapted to an Asian setting, incorporating elements of South East Asian art forms. Full of wit and wonder, colorful characters, and fabulous musical numbers, this is an exhilarating, magical adventure for all the family, and a powerful statement on empowering every child with self-belief and hope.
“Soars deliriously high and gloriously far.” - Time Out NY “An absurdly funny fantastical journey!” - Entertainment Weekly “Charming and inventive…this show is the gold standard.” - New York Post

The DBS-Pangdemonium NextGen Education Programme was created to fuel the creative instincts of young minds, cultivate a passion for storytelling on stage, and share hands-on experience in the craft of theatre-making in a challenging, inspiring and fun environment. Our Triple Threats Musical Theatre Workshop for those aged 13 to 19, is led by US-trained Musical Theatre mentor Caleb Goh and Musical Director Joanne Ho. The programme aims to impart fundamentals of storytelling through music, expression through song, vocal instruction and movement, culminating in a special showcase. Ultimately, we want to instil youths with greater discipline, self-esteem, confidence and an appreciation of the arts. The DBS-Pangdemonium NextGen Education Programme also seeks to discover and develop individuals with vibrant voices, dynamic points of view and unique stories, and shape into the next wave of Singapore playwrights. Our Stage Right Playwriting Workshop is targeted towards 14 to 25-year-olds. At this week-long group workshop led by Pangdemonium’s Resident Playwright Stephanie Street, participants will learn about narrative structure, scene construction, dialogue development, character creation, and practical principles of writing great drama. The workshop will culminate in the creation of a ten-minute play, which will be showcased in a staged reading by professional actors. Our Write Here, Write Now Playwriting Mentorship is open to aspiring writers of all ages. One promising applicant will be selected for a fully sponsored one-on-one coaching with Stephanie Street. With her guidance, the goal is to produce a full-length play, which may be considered for staging and/or submission to playwriting competitions. We believe that our DBS-Pangdemonium NextGen Education Programme will help to create the next generation of theatre professionals, sowing seeds for a vibrant theatre industry, and paving the way for the arts to empower, enlighten and enrich lives in our community.
