TRIPLE THREATS 2023 SHOWCASE

1 July 2023 Drama Centre Black Box

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

CAMP!

Triple Threats Musical Theatre Workshop turns 10! What can be said that has not been said over the past decade of stories told by our intrepid, youth performers? When tasked with the responsibility of creating a narrative for this year, I looked back at past showcases to inspire the path forward. Past themes have included murder, deals with the devil, the seasons of change, museum exhibits that come to life, and a postapocalyptic dystopian future.

When pondering what story to tell for this showcase, I decided I wanted to reflect a narrative that was all about hope. The past few years have been tough. So much has changed in our world and each morning, we wake up to slay more dragons and fight more battles. I wanted to highlight the resilience of the human spirit and the compassion that continues to outpour from all of us even as we continue to face our own challenges. I hope that this story will inspire you to hope again. In spite of all human (and other) foibles, we find a way to show a little more love, spark a little more joy, and instill a little more compassion.

I would like to thank the entire production team that worked tirelessly over this whirlwind two-week period to bring this showcase to fruition, without which none of what you are about to see could be possible. They are the absolute best!

I would also like to thank all of you for supporting Pangdemonium and the performing arts here in Singapore. Live theatre is an experience like no other so let’s continue to embrace it with childlike wonder and unmitigated joy!

Enjoy

QUOTES FROM THE CAST

(IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)

“I am currently in my Year 3 at Singapore Polytechnic, specialising in Applied Drama and Psychology. One of the things I enjoy the most is spending time with my beautiful girlfriend. Apart from that, during my free time, I like to listen to music, play video games, and hang out with friends. Currently, my favorite musical is Beetlejuice.

During my childhood, I was often told that I had an unattractive voice. As a result, I developed a sense of shame and fear surrounding singing. I joined this programme to regain confidence in that area and to acquire invaluable skills that would help me as a performer in the future.”

“I am currently pursuing a diploma in Psychology at Temasek Polytechnic. At the moment, my favorite musical would have to be Hadestown, thanks to its unique and distinct soundtrack. The beautiful set design and clever use of lighting established a captivating connection with the stage. Above all, its heartbreaking and unpredictable ending leaves a lasting impact.

For me, joining Triple Threats has been a way to challenge myself as a performer, pushing the boundaries of my skills and creating unforgettable experiences with new material and friends. It has always been an exhilarating opportunity for personal growth.”

“I am a student from Tanglin Trust School, and my favorite musical is Dear Evan Hansen! Why? Integrity is a big part of the show because Evan lies the entire time but he can’t lie to himself. The world needs more integrity.

At the tender age of 8, I auditioned for a show on the MBS theatre stage, and that experience solidified my desire to pursue a life on stage. It was an electrifying moment for me. Last Christmas, I had the privilege of performing in Wild Rice’s production of Pinocchio, and it felt like I had discovered a second home.

Having heard rave reviews from former students, I eagerly awaited the moment I turned 13 so that I could audition for Triple Threats.

I am immensely grateful for this opportunity. Thank you!”

“I am a Year 3 student at Singapore Polytechnic, pursuing a Diploma in Integrated Events & Projects Management.

I like to read, paint, and watch movies and shows in my free time. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends! My favorite musicals are Hadestown and Mean Girls.

I joined Triple Threats because I love performing, I wanted to experience what it’s like performing in musical theatre and to further enhance my skills in singing, acting, and dancing.”

“I’m 18 years old and I recently graduated from UWCSEA Dover and I’ll be going to University of California, San Diego this autumn.

In addition to theatre, I love to paint, do graphic design, dance, and I am also an avid scrapbooker. My favourite musicals are Falsettos, the Last Five Years, and Carrie.

I wanted to join Triple Threats because I am a huge fan of musical theatre, and wanted to develop my skills as well as have a chance to perform, which is something I adore doing.”

“I’m 15 years old and I am currently studying music at the School of the Arts (SOTA). My favourite musical is Hamilton! I have cherished a deep love for music and singing for as long as I can remember, and I aspire to continue pursuing my dreams through this program. Let’s strive to give our best effort every day!

I joined Triple Threats because it captures the very reason I fell in love with music — its ability to convey stories. However, with musical theatre, stories are told through various avenues beyond music.

Thus, I am genuinely intrigued by the opportunity to explore these other aspects of performance through Triple Threats.”

Jasmine Ashley Francisco Naomika Nadkarni Megan Tan

“I’m 17 and I attend UWCSEA East. My favourite musical is Hadestown. My hobbies include playing music on the guitar and piano, as well as singing. I also adore being involved in theatre! Additionally, I thoroughly enjoy playing basketball.

I wanted to join Pangdemonium’s Triple Threats Program because I believe it would provide an amazing opportunity for me to enhance my skills as a performer and connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for musical theatre. I am elated to say that this experience has exceeded my expectations, and I am immensely grateful for this opportunity!”

“I’m 14 and I study at UWCSEA Dover. I can’t choose my favourite musical because there’s so many I haven’t watched yet, but Fun Home will always be special to me.

I like taking pictures of the beautiful sky. I joined because, as the song ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ says, ‘anything your heart desires will come to you’.”
