TRILL – A font inspired by the gaudiness of bling, a trend from the 90’s East Coast Skateboarding and Hip-Hop culture. It is a combination between fancy jewelleries with street culture, creating a tastelessly tasteful typeface.

The concept behind this typeface is based on an observation toward today’s street wear which is influenced by East Coast skateboarding and hiphop culture in the 90’s and early 2000’s. It is mainly a comeback of style from that era, which is now being “revived” and made famous by many hip-hop artist. Skateboarding and hip-hop always go hand-in-hand, but with the help of today’s subculture it could now influence each other equally.

One of the most trendy item that is being used right now is the bling. Bling (or bling-bling) is a slang terms popularized in Hip-Hop culture from the late 90’s, which refers to the flashy, ostentatious, or elaborate jewelry and ornamented accessories that are carried, worn, or installed. With the help from many famous hip-hop artist, bling is now being introduced back in todays trend, and making its own way to be an essential accessories, whether it’s in form of grill, necklace, bracelet, rings, watches, etc, creating an intersection between Hip-hop, street wear and skateboarding culture.

Trill had been through a lot of ups and downs along the process, until it was finalized. These changes and progress along the way has shaped the end product of Trill, and a lot of sketches, development, and critics are involved when creating this font.

10.

The first trial of making Trill is by exploring on to the layered fonts. Using Raleway as the base font, the exploration continues by giving more layers on to the font, and giving chain on top of the font, so that it have the touch of hip-hop bling which is chains,

The limitations about this design is that the chain makes it only able to be used on top as it is hanging down. Because of that it limits the amount of words use, because it could not be used in sentences more than one line, again because of the hanging chains. And last is that it is too dependant with the color and texture.

The second trial explores more on to the bling, particulartly the necklace chain. The idea is to create and form the shape of the alphabets by using chains and jewelleries ornamented on the surface of it.

Again, this design is still too dependant with the usage of colour, as it does not work in black and white. Another problem is that this design looks very geometrical, and does not give the rebellious and tastelesness.

15.

Due to the previous trials and errors, the design approach was changed. Rather than to be very literal as the previous ones, the last trial focuses more on the essence of the street culture itself.

This design does not dependant to textures and colours, as the idea of flashy bling-bling is translated on to the form and silhouettes. The form is more rebellious and loose compared to the previous designs which looks stiff.

The shape and form of Trill is derived from the elements of graffiti tagging style, with the thick and thin stroke of blackletter, while the sharp edges and forms is derived from the bling-bling.

Graffiti is part of the street culture, and therefore it have a relationship with the bling, as both of them is the branch of street culture. The uses of spray paint on graffiti is portrayed on to the design of Trill, combines with irregular shapes which becomes one of the distinct elements on graffiti tagging style.

The thick and thin stroke of Trill is inspired by the blackletter. Blackletter had become part of the culture for a long time, as this type is widely used for clothing, Hip-Hop album cover, music videos, and so on.
