Where Has Civility Gone? This article was written and published in Panorama four years ago. Although, I do not like to repeat my commentaries, this one seems appropriate to republish. Growing up as a young boy in central Arkansas until age nine and then moving to north central Washington State, I lived by the same set of civil-polite rules; loosely defined as my grandmother’s golden rule “if you have nothing good to say then keep your mouth shut and listen.” I wonder if that “Golden Rule” would work well in today’s public discourse, especially the part about being willing to listen and understand what others have to say before putting in your own “two cents worth.” So I ask again, where has all the civility gone? That is a question I keep asking myself daily. I wonder where all the respect has gone when opinions differ. This subject comes up in my daily interactions with people that I have known and respected for many years. It has caused me, at times, to second guess my understanding of what civility is. I looked it up in a Webster’s… yes it still exists. Civility is defined as formal politeness and courtesy in behavior and speech. I think I can safely say that by turning on the television to CNN, Fox News, or MSNBC you will see what a lack of civility looks and sounds like. Every day you get to see how someone with a different point of view is treated. The current world of politics has simply gone crazy with conservatives and liberals not being able to agree on anything and just continually shout each other down. The Moderates, unfortunately, are mostly pushed aside in order to allow more shouting to occur because Moderates are viewed as being

APRIL 2022

too agreeable and, of course, defeat the purpose of shouting. Gone are the days when people sat down and had honest, vibrant discussions that addressed the issues, not the personalities. The answer to the lack of civility might be going back to my grandmother’s “Golden Rule,” which would be an excellent beginning. I chose to repeat this article because in todays hyped up and politically partisan times, it is worth remembering that at the end of the day, we are all Americans! As such, we should not refer to one another as Un-American, Anti American, or Disloyal because we happen to have different views about a wide range of subjects. Personally, I would never refer to anyone using these terms. Shouldn’t we all feel this way?

Happy Easter

to all of our readers and advertisers!

Refresh Your Outdoor Space With These 5 Tips (BPT) - Over the last few years, you've likely spent more time at home than ever before. As a result, you're more conscious of how you use your space and how design can impact your comfort and ease. To give you a bit more variety beyond your home's walls, consider redesigning your outdoor spaces to create a haven for recreation and relaxation. Best of all, outdoor spaces add value to your home if you plan to sell. If you need ideas on how to revamp your outdoor spaces, consider these top

five outdoor design trends. Get inspired and create your own outdoor oasis. 1. Functionality - Homeowners are prioritizing day-to-day use of their outdoor spaces instead of entertaining, driving a need for functionality. Practical elements like lighting and audio technology can elevate the outdoor space. Other features like shade structures, privacy walls and screens, built-in barbecue grills and Wi-Fi allow you to use the space for working, relaxing, cooking and more. 2. Defined rooms - Whether it's an

outdoor kitchen, office or living room, homeowners are leaning toward more efficient, defined outdoor spaces. Homeowners want to use outdoor living on a day-to-day basis to unwind, connect with nature and take advantage of the health and well-being benefits the Continued on next page

Adding an outdoor kitchen may inspire you to make dishes using herbs and veggies you've grown in your garden, and an outdoor living room can help you bring the family together at the end of the school and workday. 3. Monochromatic colors with accents - While lighter, tone-on-tone color palettes remain popular, accent colors and accessories are on the rise. or contrasting outdoor living space. Jetset, Belgard's 2022 Color of the Year, is a true blue that is the perfect pop of color to enhance any color palette. "Jetset is a much-needed dose of liveliness and joy," said Joe Raboine, director of residential hardscapes at Belgard. "It represents the excitement of a new year and the readiness to do more, be more and live more." 4. Modular design and geometric patterns - Another popular trend is modular, geometric standard patterns composed of clean lines and simple formats. Simple patterns create a modern,

uncluttered aesthetic that emphasizes furniture or other focal points in the space. Large format patterns and pavers also lend themselves to this style, allowing for more efficient installation. 5. Entangled design - As people blend their outdoor spaces to serve as extensions of their homes, many are focusing on entangled design, which combines the surrounding landscape with the hardscape design. Fractured edges with no defined break, natural stone transitions and irregular edges blended with boulders, grass and aggregate create a more natural, organic look that enhances design continuity. To increase the depth of greens, grays and other neutral tones associated with entangled, biophilic design, consider using Jetset as the accent color for your outdoor spaces. What Should You Do If Your HVAC System Stops Working? By the HVAC experts at S.J. Kowalski Systems always seem to breakdown on the hottest day of the Summer or the coldest night of the Winter. When this eventually does happen, S.J. Kowalski, Inc. has you covered. Picture this: You’re comfortably sitting in your Living Room, watching TV with your air- conditioning or furnace humming away until suddenly all goes quiet. What do you do? Heating and cooling equipment is very complicated and while repairs are generally beyond the abilities of the typical homeowner, there a few things you can check before calling for service. First, some thermostats require battery power for proper operation. Check and install fresh batteries if necessary. Next, check the circuit breakers in your electrical panel box and reset if tripped. Finally, check your filter. A dirty or clogged filter will cause your system to shut down. If none of these items remedy the situation, it’s time to give S.J. Kowalski’s HVAC service department a call at 570-455-2600. If your breakdown occurs in the Summer, you can set the fan switch on your thermostat to the “on” position to keep the air circulating throughout your home while closing the curtains to keep the heat out until we arrive. If your breakdown occurs in the Winter, check you outdoor heat pump unit. A heavy ice accumulation on the outdoor unit indicates a defrost problem. Trying to chip it away is not recommended but turning the outdoor unit off at the breaker box and letting it defrost naturally is recommended. If safe to do so, a small portable electric space heater in the room you’re in is a temporary solution until we get there. Also, open Kitchen and Bathroom cabinet doors and let faucets drip to help prevent water line freeze-ups. If you have a propane gas

warm air system, first check the fuel level on the gauge on your outdoor tank and get it filled if necessary. If you detect the odor of either propane or natural gas in your home, don’t touch any light switches, immediately go outside and call either UGI, your propane supplier or local fire department to report a leak. The best thing you can do to help prevent a system failure is annual routine maintenance. Regular maintenance visits are much more cost effective than a repair visit and many times our technicians can discover a weak component before it has a chance to fail. Give us a call today at 570-455-2600 to schedule your system maintenance. And finally, after 37 years in the HVAC business, our salesman John “Nick” Nicolardi will be retiring effective April 29'h. Nick joined the S.J.Kowalski, Inc. team in 2012. Nick was an outstanding salesman. We consider him part of our family and will surely miss him. Taking his place will be Jacob Bower who will be moving from our service department into our sales department. We wish both Jacob well in his new sales position and Nick well in his retirement.

Get Growing With An Urban Garden

Panorama Community Magazine

(Family Features) Urban living and lush gardens aren’t as mutually exclusive as one might assume. In fact, it’s possible to cultivate thriving gardens in even the smallest spaces. The first step toward creating a successful small garden space is planning. Sketching out your garden area with a clear understanding of the actual dimensions is important. This allows you to allocate adequate growing space for the vegetation you choose and prevent overcrowding. Part of your planning should also take climate into account. If the sun reaches your garden area, knowing what time the sun typically hits matters. Some plants are poorly equipped to handle the strength of direct afternoon rays. Other matters to consider are the soil quality and whether it is adequate to nourish vegetation. If not, you may need to excavate and refill your planting areas with nutrient-rich gardening soil. Access to water is also a concern; if you’ll be forced to water by can, avoid choosing plants that would better benefit from a thorough hose soaking. As you begin planning the actual contents of your garden, don’t hesitate to blend edibles with beauty. Many herbs offer attractive textures and colors that can add variety to a colorful selection of flowering plants. Edible plants such as strawberries offer color from blooms (and later brightly hued fruit), as well as trailing greenery that looks pretty along the edges of potted containers. If your goal is color, give consideration to the blooming season for your selected plants. Unless you plan to enjoy your garden for just a short season, choose a variety of plants and flowers that bloom throughout your region’s entire growing season. Especially in the smallest garden spaces, it’s smart to make the most of vertical space. Use a trellis or other structure to encourage vining vegetation to grow upward rather than outward. Hanging baskets or buckets are ideal for inverted growth of plants such as tomatoes or peppers, and shelving or tiered plant stands are handy for creating more plant real estate in smaller garden spaces. Beautiful gardens need not be limited to those with expansive lawns in rural communities. Though smaller in scale, urban gardens can deliver equal beauty and a surprising volume of edible bounty with proper preparation and design. Find more tips at eLivingtoday.com.

Home & Garden Guide

(Family Features) A home design that blends multiple elements seamlessly can be both inviting and visually interesting. If you’re planning to upgrade your living space in 2022, consider incorporating materials like stone and brick, which bring color, texture and functionality while complementing some of this year’s leading design trends. Settling on a design aesthetic is the first step for most renovation projects, but it can be a challenge for many homeowners. If you’re in need of inspiration for a project on the horizon, consider these 2022 trends from the design experts at Glen-Gery: Warm Colors Look for a shift toward warmer colors like beige, tan, caramel, cocoa and even black. Designers are moving from cool grays to a warmer coffee-inspired palette. The use of warmer colors on structural elements of a home, like brick, stone, siding, doors and shutters, offer visual warmth while making a statement. Textures and Patterns Textures and patterns are popping up in many on-trend designs. Texture can enhance the overall feeling of a space by offering depth and complexity that draws a visitor into the room. The use of texture in a design element, like stone or brick, can provide visual interest and engage the mind with a tactile response that encourages interaction with the environment. Outdoor Inspiration Nature is inspiring an array of design elements this year. You may see this trend emerging through increased use of glass for light and views of nature, as well as continued

Clever Storage Ideas for Small Spaces (Family Features) No matter how cramped and cluttered your living space may be, you can almost always find a spot or two for extra storage. It’s often just a matter of getting creative and utilizing a few clever solutions. Consider these simple ideas to create some extra space in oft-used rooms:

Kitchen • Metal rods with hanging hooks can create storage space on your blank walls. Use them to hang coffee cups, cooking utensils, dish towels or pots and pans. • Magnetic strips mounted on the wall or the inside of a cabinet door can be a simple way to hang knives Continued on next page

HARLEY SAYS:

The More You Look At Homes, The Better Our Homes Look! focus on the versatile and transitional indoor-outdoor spaces that gained momentum during the height of the pandemic. Approaches may vary depending on the homeowner’s style and climate, but examples include larger patios in brick and stone, as well as more functional private patios and porches. Another aspect of this trend is the tendency for homeowners to integrate indoor conveniences such as kitchens, fireplaces, furniture and electronics into their outdoor spaces. Clean Lines This season, designers are creating inviting, comfortable and serene spaces with modern vibes through the use of clean lines in design, materials and furnishings. One trick is integrating elements that transfer light or give an illusion of illumination from a higher sheen, such as glass brick. The play of light and shadows simultaneously blends inspiration from nature with sleek lines and dramatic focal points to evoke a sense of balanced calm and strength. This approach can also come to life through ceiling windows, furnishings and the use of stone, brick and wood on statement walls or accents. Saving Gas The Top 5 Tips For

Squeezing Every Dollar From The Pump. By Thomas R. Buff Here we go again. We are faced with skyrocketing gas prices with no relief in sight. The five-dollar mark for a gallon of gas can become an everyday norm. Every motorist is not only fed up with the high prices of gasoline but also with the thousands of adds that promote gas pinching gadgets and gimmicks that claim will save you a pile of money in gas savings. The reality is that you can improve your fuel economy up to 35 percent by simply following these five tips that do not involve infomercial adds or wacky contraptions. These

Slow Down – slowing down is not only sound advice but is a proven fact to save gas. In a typical car every 10 miles and hour over 60 mph is similar to the price of gasoline going up about 50 cents a gallon. The reason behind this is all about friction. 3 Ways Drivers Can Extend Their Adventures This Spring (BPT) - As winter warms into spring, there's something else heating up: the travel plans of adventurers everywhere. Millions of Americans are preparing for their spring and summer journeys, but there's one thing many are overlooking - a factor that will determine whether their trips are safe and successful. Their tires. Tires are the only part of a vehicle that touches the road, so they're a pivotal part of every road trip. The right set of tires can even take drivers further than they'd otherwise be able to travel. Here's how travelers can use their tires to extend their adventures.

it is vital to make sure you're riding on the right rubber. This time of year allseason tires will do the trick most places, but it's important to note that they aren't built for driving in winter conditions. If you're headed way up north or into high elevations, it's worth considering allweather tires like the Nokian Tyres WRG4 or the all-terrain Nokian Tyres Outpost, since they are certified for winter driving and provide Extend your terrain a true four-season solution in areas Before fine-tuning final trip details, with unpredictable weather. If you want to know whether a tire has the OK for winter driving, look for the three-peak mountain snowflake on the sidewall. That's a certification indicating a tire has been tested in snow. If you live somewhere that experiences sustained winter conditions, it's still best to drive a dedicated winter tire during that season, then switch to an all-season

or all-weather tire in the spring and summer. Extend your toughness If you're headed off the beaten path, you can extend your adventure with a set of tough all-terrain tires. Some tires are even reinforced with special fibers that help them resist potholes, ruts and rocks. That includes puncture-resistant Aramid fibers, the same material used in aerospace and bulletproof vests. Nokian Tyres recommends finding a set of tires - like the Outpost - that is reinforced to help you avoid punctures

Panorama Community Magazine and blowouts on your journey. If you're going off-road, also consider an all-terrain tire with a high-tech tread pattern that helps you tackle the versatile conditions you'll face. You'll want deep tread, the ability to channel away water, and a tire that rides smoothly over gravel and bumps. Extend your travel Did you know tires could help you save gas mileage? The less friction created between the tire and the road, the further you can travel on a tank of gas. Some tiremakers have doubled down on decreasing the rolling resistance of their products, which increases fuel-efficiency, helping put money back in drivers' wallets ... which comes in especially handy when gas prices are high! Nokian Tyres crafts tires that have low rolling resistance, a feature that also lowers CO2 emissions created when your vehicle expends energy propelling itself along the road. And drivers of electric vehicles are big fans of the efficiency that results from low rolling resistance, since it extends the range they can travel on each charge. Before you hit the road this season, make sure your tires can extend your terrain, toughness and travel. To learn more about a new tire that accomplishes all three of those goals, visit NokianTires.com/Outpost.

Continued from page 15 makes the job of overcoming friction together resulting in more gasoline used. In fact, if a car gets 28 mpg at 65 mph, driving at 75 will drop it too 24 mpg. What is the perfect speed for improving gas mileage? Most experts claim it is between 55 and 60 mph. 2. Check your tire pressure – According to studies, 86% of motorist do not check their tire inflation. The results are typically underflated tires, which cause a tire to rest on both of its shoulders or sides as compared to the center where the tread is located. Tires that are under inflated by a mere 6 psi can reduce fuel economy up to 2 percent. 3. Tune- Up – A neglected engine is a major cause of gas guzzling. By simply replacing a clogged air filter it can improve gas mileage by 10 percent. Remember, an engine has to breath properly in order to burn fuel efficiently. A basic tune-up that includes replacing the spark plugs, fuel filter, and air filter is a good way to improve gas mileage instantly. 4. Use cruise control – When driving on a highway, cruise control can save you up to 14 percent in gasoline usage. Driving at a constant speed reduces acceleration input or “surging”. The automobiles computer will feed gasoline at a slow and steady pace when acceleration is needed. So, if you have cruise control, use it. You will increase your gas mileage.

5. Buy a more fuel-efficient vehicle – Getting a new car or truck may not be on your agenda but with high gas prices and a weak economy, this is the time to buy. May automobile manufactures are offering huge rebates to entice the motoring public to buy cars. There are many new vehicles that offer a huge saving in miles per gallon without sacrificing safety. So, think long and hard about your transportation needs and research the advantage of owning a hybrid, electric or a gas-sipping automobile with a four-cylinder engine. Although these are simple tips they may just save you a pile of money in gas savings. In this day and age any savings are helpful. Happy Motoring!

Tips To Know Before Buying An Electric Vehicle (BPT) - Electric vehicles (EVs) are increasing in popularity as drivers consider the operating cost of owning an automobile as well as the environmental impact of their commutes. The number of electric vehicle models available has nearly doubled in the last few years and the market is getting charged up. The rising demand for electric vehicles has led to a larger inventory of new and used plug-ins in the auto market. "EVs have high safety ratings and offer a quieter ride," said Kevin Quinn, vice president of auto claims at Mercury Insurance. "Add in low maintenance costs and the opportunity to reduce a vehicle owner's carbon footprint, and it becomes very appealing to consumers who are looking to buy a new car." With more than 2 million electric cars on the road in the U.S., EV owners know that home charging is one of the most important aspects to owning an electric vehicle. Other than driving, cold weather zaps the batteries of energy quickly. Using the air conditioning or heater, as well as uphill drives, also reduce range. Knowing that there might be more frequent charges under these demands makes home charging more appealing. According to the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Home

Charging Study, 84% of EV owners regularly charge their vehicle at home. It costs about half as much to charge an EV at home as it does to charge at a public station. Home chargers also offer the convenience of being programmed so they draw power during off-peak hours, saving EV owners money. Most EVs come with a Level 1 charger allowing drivers to charge at their residence from a standard 120volt household outlet. This method can take several hours, typically overnight, to get back most of the car's range. For this reason, many EV owners purchase Level 2 charging stations to be installed in their home. Level 2 charging allows for a quicker charge using a 240-volt outlet. EV owners looking to install a 240volt power outlet or hardwired charging station to their home should speak with a trusted electrician who is trained, licensed and insured to install NEMA 1450 outlets. These outlets are similar to what an electric dryer or oven is plugged into. Once installed, the charger would be considered part of the home and will need to be covered by supplemental insurance in the event of any type of loss. "A standard homeowners' policy excludes coverage related to motor vehicles and their equipment, accessories and parts," said Bonnie Lee, vice

president of property claims. "It's important that EV owners who install a Level 2 charger protect their homes as well as their vehicles". EV owners can also charge their vehicles with portable chargers, but how owners obtained those chargers could make a difference on which type of insurance would be needed. If the portable charger came from the dealership with the vehicle, it would be covered by their auto collision or comprehensive insurance. However, if EV owners purchase a portable charger after buying their vehicle, they may need special equipment coverage. "Those using portable chargers to charge their vehicles should consider carrying comprehensive auto insurance coverage," said Quinn. "A standard homeowners' insurance policy excludes coverage related to motor vehicles, which means losses to vehicle equipment, accessories and parts are not covered." While reports of fires happening while EVs are parked and charging are rare, owners should always be mindful when charging their vehicles. "Electric vehicles are still relatively new to the marketplace so automakers are still perfecting them," said Lee. "EV owners need to do their due diligence and make sure they're properly educated about their manufacturer's recommendations for proper charging."

In a separate bowl, stir together the black bean mixture onto lightly warmed flour tortillas, and add any additional onions and cilantro. Cut in half, and serve immediately.

4. Heat oil in a small pan and sauté the tuna, stirring often, until the tuna is heated through and very slightly browned. Take the pan off the heat. 5. If using soft tortillas, heat a griddle over high heat and place them on it. Heat the tortillas, turning once or twice in the process, until they are very hot. Tips Warm tortillas are much easier to fold. You can microwave them under a damp paper towel for 15 seconds, place them on a griddle over low heat, or wrap them in foil and bake for about 15 minutes at 350 F. Try to keep your fillings 3 to 4 inches wide and about 8 inches long. If you add more, your veggie burrito may not close properly. Let the burritos sit for a couple of minutes so the tortillas mold to the fillings.

Make Easter ‘Eggstra’ Special

6 Tips To Bring Your Family Together To Decorate Eggs (Family Features) Easter is about traditions, both old and new, as well as celebrating family and creating lifelong memories. In fact, nearly 8 out of 10 Americans will celebrate the holiday this year, according to the National Retail Federation, which often includes egg decorating amongst the fun. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to the 13th century. Eggs were once viewed as a forbidden food to some religious entities, so people would paint or decorate them to highlight the end of penance and fasting. Yet still today, coloring eggs can help bring the whole family together and inspire simple moments of connection and creativity. From dunking eggs in neon dyes to embellishing them with paint, glitter and more, PAAS® brand – named after the Dutch word for Easter,

“Passen” – offers these expert Easter egg dyeing tips based on its 140 years of experience. ` Keep It Clean – Wash your hands in hot, soapy water before and after handling eggs, even if they’ve already been cooked or decorated. This helps protect you from any bacteria that may be on the egg and protects the eggshell from oil on hands that may make the dye not adhere properly. Make sure an adult supervises all projects to ensure food safety precautions are observed. Hard Cook, Don’t Hard Boil – Although the cooking water must come to a full boil, the pan should be immediately removed from heat so the eggs can cook gently in the hot water. This method produces tender, not rubbery eggs and minimizes cracking. Banish the Greenish Ring – This harmless but unsightly discoloration

sometimes forms around hard-cooked yolks as a result of a reaction between sulfur in the egg white and iron in the yolk. It occurs when eggs have been cooked for too long or at too high a temperature. Cooking eggs in hot, not boiling water then cooling immediately helps minimize this discoloration. Make Them “Apeeling” – To ensure easily peeled eggs, buy and refrigerate them 7-10 days in advance of cooking. This brief “breather” allows the eggs time to take in air, which helps separate the membranes from the shell. Store Eggs Safely – In the shell, hard-cooked eggs can be refrigerated safely for up to one week. Refrigerating them in their original carton prevents odor absorption. Once peeled, eggs should be eaten that day. Piercing shells before cooking is not recommended. If not sterile, the piercer or needle can

Tap Into Your Creative Side – You don’t have to be highly creative to create an “eggceptional” egg. Use your imagination to create appealing eggs by gluing on fun materials found at craft stores, like fake gems, sequins, trims and ribbons. You can also use paint, including gold or silver metallic paint, to make eggs special. An option like PAAS egg decorating kits can help make the process more convenient and fun. How to Hard Cook Eggs Hard-cooked eggs are best when you want a sturdy egg for hiding and to eat when you’re done. They are also easier for younger children to handle. The Smart Kitchen Of 2022 (BPT) - It seems that most people have experienced a lifestyle transformation over the past two years. Remote living means more people are cooking and eating at home, creating higher standards for their kitchen space. Fortunately, the newest appliances and technology advances are meeting these demands and helping people live more comfortable, efficient lives. Today's reimagined kitchen is smarter, healthier and greener - designed for optimal wellness in the home. Technology is helping homeowners maximize their kitchen's potential, giving them the ability to do things they never have before. Here are some of the top kitchen trends of 2022 that help streamline life and modernize how you can use the kitchen space: Rethink refrigeration After spending increased amounts of time at home, many homeowners have decided to add more personalized rooms to their homes, like home gyms, offices, art studios, theaters and more. With that, came the desire for more versatile appliances that could fit into any of these new spaces. Products that have become increasingly popular are undercounter refrigerators, especially those that can blend easily into cabinetry. Undercounter refrigerators offer added convenience to the home, whether you need extra space for entertaining or want to keep certain cosmetics or toiletries chilled in your master suite. The French door category also continues to be a top trend in kitchens throughout the country, but limited sizing was previously an issue for some homeowners. Now, the first-ever 48-inch French door refrigerator

from Signature Kitchen Suite is opening this option to more people than ever, bringing beauty and functionality into any luxury kitchen. Ovens with options Warmer weather is just around the corner, meaning entertaining season is coming back in full force. The good news is you don't need a huge kitchen to be a pro host. Many kitchen appliances today offer more functionality in one product so you can get more cooking done in one convenient space. For instance, the latest ranges now feature double-oven designs, so you can bake or roast two dishes at different temperatures at once in separate oven cavities. For added convenience, the microwave easily connects to the range for automatic ventilation and lighting when cooking on the range's cooktop, while

InstaView technology allows you to check on the cooking progress by simply knocking twice on the glass to illuminate the interior. More than a microwave Does your microwave oven cook unevenly, where some parts of foods are overcooked, and others are still cold? If so, it's time for an upgrade. Modern smart microwaves cook foods quickly and evenly with advanced technology that provides delicious results and added features that complement the way you use your kitchen. Thanks to the slide-out "ExtendaVent, your cooking atmosphere is kept clear and clean as it reduces the presence of smoke and lingering odors in the kitchen. Plus, cleaning has never been easier with the EasyClean interior that features a special coating to prevent food and grease from sticking.

5 Ways To Show Your Pet Some Extra Love (BPT) - Your pets are part of your family, and you would do just about anything for them. From the tail wags and face licks to the head bumps and purr fests, your pets show their unconditional love in many ways, every single day. If you're looking for ways to reciprocate, consider the following tips for things you can do to show your pet some extra love. 1. Have a "yes day" with your pet - When was the last time you devoted time to solely focusing on your pet and doing the activities you know they love to do? The truth is, your beloved pets love nothing more than hanging out with you - so why not make a whole day of it? Start by making a list of all the activities your pet enjoys or saying 'yes' to your pet's cues to see where the day takes you. One more treat after a walk through the park? Yes! One more

minute of scratches behind the ear? Yes! Whatever you end up doing, know that any time spent with your pet is time they'll love. 2. Feed them nutritious, delicious food - One simple, yet important, way to keep your dog or cat happy and healthy is by feeding them nutritious and tasty food and treats. Choosing food that uses all-natural ingredients will not only help maintain their well-being, but your four-legged family member will love it. While finding pet-food products with organic fruits and vegetables and sustainably sourced ingredients may seem like a daunting task, raw pet food leader Stella & Chewy's has a variety of products to keep your pet happy and healthy. For cats, consider Raw Coated Chicken and for dogs, check out the Red Meat With Grain Raw Blend - or find your own favorite by visiting StellaAndChewys.com to learn more.

Try a new interactive toy or activity that can keep you both entertained for hours. When playtime is done, put the toy away so it's still fresh the next time you bring it out for a play session. 4. Take some PTO for your P-E-T - Between family and busy work schedules, you may be wondering how to carve out dedicated time for your pets. Why not take a day off work for exactly that? "At our company, we make sure everyone has an extra day off to spend dedicated time with their pets," said Marc Hill, CEO of Stella & Chewy's. "Just as you might take a day off to celebrate a loved one's birthday or anniversary, our pets are also our family, and we believe our employees - and their pets - deserve an additional day off to bask in the raw, unadulterated love we share with each other." With more than two-thirds of pet parents agreeing that it's important for family vacations to be pet-friendly, consider taking that extra day off to embark on a road trip with your pet. Visit friends, head to a dog-friendly beach or go sightseeing at a national or state park. Whatever you do with your time off, your pet will appreciate the extra day hanging out with their favorite person - you! 5. Teach your pet a new trick - Most dogs - and even some cats - enjoy the challenge of learning something new.

Guard Your Pets Against Contagious Diseases And Parasites by Dr. Kenneth Trippett, West Hazleton Veterinary Hospital It was Ben Franklin who said “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is rarely more true then when dealing with parasites and parasitic diseases in our pets. As the weather warms, the biting insects return. This represents a dangerous problem for all dogs. A single mosquito bite can cause Heartworm infection in any dog. Heartworm is almost always fatal without treatment and the treatment is very expensive. Luckily, Heartworm Disease is easily prevented. All dogs should be heartworm tested and started on a once per month heartworm preventive pill. These pills are very safe for most dogs, and will also help prevent intestinal parasites as well. Cats share some of these risks as well. Even indoor cats can get intestinal parasites because some are spread by fleas, or can be brought into the house by other animals, insects, or even on the bottom of your shoes. For these reasons, we encourage all responsible pet owner to have a stool sample checked at least once per year. All dogs should also be checked for heartworm and kept on heartworm preventative year round. Veterinary Remember, not only is an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure, it can also save your pet' life!

Keep Pets Safe In The Garden

(Family Features) If you have pets that enjoy spending time outdoors, it’s important to make sure your yard is a safe place for them to be. Consider these hazards that can negatively impact the well-being of your furry friends. Poisonous Plants – Some common plants can be dangerous for animals, causing anything from mild oral irritations and upset stomachs to cardiovascular damage and even death. For example, these are some of the toxic plants the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has identified: • Aloe – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, anorexia and depression

• Azalea – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, weakness, coma, cardiovascular collapse and death • Burning bush – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and weakness, as well as heart rhythm abnormalities with large doses • Caladium – can cause burning and irritation of the mouth, tongue and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing • Daylilies – can cause kidney failure in cats • Hibiscus – can cause vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and anorexia Mulch and Compost – The decomposing elements that make

compost good can be bad for pets. Keep compost in a secure container or fenced off area so pets can’t get to it. Cocoa mulch can be a particular problem for dogs. A by-product of chocolate production, cocoa mulch can cause digestive problems and even seizures in dogs. Shredded pine or cedar mulch is a safer choice. Fertilizer and Insecticides – The chemicals used to get rid of pests or make your lawn lush can be toxic to pets. Some of the most dangerous pesticides include snail bait with metaldehyde, fly bait with methomyl, systemic insecticides with disyston or disulfoton, mole or gopher bait with zinc phosphide and most forms of rat poison. Fleas and Ticks – In addition to using appropriate flea and tick prevention methods such as collars and sprays, make sure your yard isn’t a welcoming environment for these pests. Keep the lawn trimmed and remove brush and detritus, where fleas and ticks often lurk. Fleas can cause hair loss, scabs, excessive scratching, tapeworms and anemia. Ticks can do all of that, plus bring you and your family in contact with diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease. Art & Antiques By Dr. Lori Big Bucks for Pokémon By Dr. Lori Verderame Pokémon or Pocket Monsters, the famed card game and collectibles, that originated from Japan remains popular with collectors. Pokémon cards are widely traded and originated from Japanese anime art. The trading card game and collecting category has dedicated collectors and they are ready to spend big for that important card. Recently, a rare Pokémon card brought $375,000 from a collector with deep pockets. Judging from this sale, that collector wanted to line his pockets with a collection of pocket monsters. The very valuable Pokémon card that sold for nearly $400,000 actually was a card that featured a print error. The card was supposed to show the title at the top as Trainer yet it reads Illustrator at the top instead. This unnumbered card was rare because only a limited number of them were made. It was also rare because it was sold from the collection of one of Pokémon’s developers. This card was first distributed to those elite few who participated in Pokémon contests. The prize card was one of only 41 ever made and it has some special symbols and information that excite Pokémon collectors. When it comes to valuable Pokémon cards, your collection of trading cards can have good value too. What are some of the traits to look for when identifying the most valuable Pokémon cards? Look at the front and the back and make sure the printing and imagery is crisp and sharp. Condition of Pokémon cards is always

a vital factor and those Pokémon cards that are PSA graded will command the highest values in the marketplace. The only thing you must remember is to get an appraisal before you invest money in getting a Pokémon or any trading card PSA graded. It may be worth it but be sure that you know the appraised value before you pay to have your cards graded. You’ll be glad you did. If you are going to sell valuable cards, grading is a must. While many factors impact Pokémon card values, remember that evaluators who are also collectors or dealer that want to buy your cards may not have your best interest at heart. Make sure your appraiser is not also a Pokémon collector. How do you tell if your Pokémon card is valuable? It isn’t just one factor that impacts value, it is many. For instance, when considering the value of Pokémon cards, collectors look for card stock paper thickness, no ink loss areas or print skips, no rips or tears to the card. Creases are a no-no too. And yes, there are fakes out there too. Avoid those at all costs as the Pokémon collectors’ community are well versed in what’s trending and what’s not. Fake cards don’t have the quality printing that authentic Pokémon cards have. If a card is printed on a type of see-thru paper, it’s probably a fake too. Like the all-important tags on collectible Ty Inc. beanie babies stuffed toys that feature printing errors, Pokémon trading cards that have printed errors are the talk of the collectibles market, too. Attention Graduating Seniors — $1,000 Scholarship Available The Greater Hazleton Concert Series, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of the Bernardine L. Lingousky Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is in memory of Ms. Lingousky (1922-2014). Bernardine was a lifelong resident of Hazleton. She was a graduate of Hazleton High School and attended the McCann School of Business. Later, she received a Bachelor of Art Degree from Wilkes University and a Master’s Degree in Music from College Misericordia. Bernardine worked for Bell Telephone of PA as a business office supervisor until her retirement in 1984. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, ceramics, but music was her passion! Bernardine was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Parish at Transfiguration Church, West Hazleton. She was also a frequent organist for various churches in the area, including

Upon her passing, she bequeathed an endowment to the Greater Hazleton Concert Series to be used for the advancement of music and music education. This one-time scholarship is available to all Graduating High School Seniors, in the Greater Hazleton Area. Interested students please see your Guidance Counselor for more information and application. Applications must be received by May 13, 2022.

Continued from previous page and misprints may appear on Pokémon trading cards so look for them. And the presence of certain print techniques are important to establishing authenticity of Pokémon trading cards, such as a shadow placed around the pocket monster’s image. For instance, a printed shadow placed around an image of Pikachu or Magikarp on a trading card indicates that the card is not the most rare type as the earliest Pokémon cards did not have shadows. When it comes to Pokémon cards, make sure you know what you have before you trade or sell them. Keep collections together and remember that condition of your Pokémon trading cards will contribute to their value in the market. There’s more information about the complexities of Pokémon cards on my YouTube channel. Don't Miss The Classically Trained Tenors With A Comedic Twist The “infamous” 3 Red Neck Tenors are back and better than ever! The 3 Redneck Tenors are a new breed in the “tenor genre” combining musical comedy with classically trained voices. They sing everything while delighting their audiences not only with their vocal prowess but with songs and music ranging from Gospel to Country to Broadway, Pop, and Classical. They are just what their name implies, fine artists with a funny outlook on life and business. As a group and as individuals, they are supremely talented musicians, capable of equally excellent performances of 'Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer' and 'Ave Maria.' They can keep an audience in stitches with their comedy sketches and in tears with the beauty of their voices. Matthew Lord is a proud graduate of the prestigious Juilliard Opera Center. He is the creator and writer of the 3 Redneck Tenors, and stars with Blake Davidson and Jonathan Fruge. Their music is arranged by award-winning composer Craig Bohmler. Lord, a native of California, is recognized as a versatile performer capable of encompassing repertoire from the 18th Century to works by composers of today. His work is consistently praised for its naturalness, intensity, and commitment. He has performed in almost every major opera house in the U.S. Another

interesting fact is that Mr. Lord was chosen over thousands of contestants to compete in Fox Television’s singing competition show “Alter Ego”. His alter ego is “Wolfgang Champagne”. Dallas, Texas native Blake Davidson is an award-winning singer who has performed all over the world, and whose range of experience includes opera, symphony, and musical theatre. He received his vocal training at The University of North Texas. He is in demand as soloist and recording artist with many symphonies and has just finished a delightful return to the Corpus Christi Symphony. Jonathan Fruge, a native of Lubbock, Texas, holds a B.A. degree in Music Performance and a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from Texas Tech University. His credits include soloist appearances at Carnegie Hall with the New York City Chamber Orchestra, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and over 20 featured solos with Texas Tech University Choir. This is a show that promises to keep you excited, rolling with laughter, and clamoring for more! “3 Redneck Tenors” will begin at 7:30 PM on Thursday, April 21 at the Hazleton Area High School Auditorium

Get The Best Fit At Gino's Shoes

The best-designed shoes in the world will not do their job if they do not fit properly. Here are some tips for finding the best fit in a pair of shoes: • Wear the same socks you'll wear with a particular style of shoes. • Shop for shoes after you've been walking for a while, and later in the day, when your feet are at their largest. • Measure your feet each time you buy shoes, because your foot size can change gradually over years. Stand while your foot is measured to get the most accurate measurement. • If one foot is larger than the other, try on a pair that fits your larger foot. • Try on both shoes and check the fit. Wiggle your toes. If you don't have at least a half-inch between your longest toe and the end of the shoe — try a larger size. • Be sure the shoe is wide enough. The side-to-side fit of the shoe should be snug, not tight. • Walk in the shoes before buying them. They should feel comfortable right away. Make sure your heel fits snugly in each shoe and doesn't slip as you walk. Gino’s Shoe Store is a family owned and oriented professional fitting center, specializing in children, youth, and adult shoes in addition to orthopedic work and doctor prescriptions. They have been in business for 60 years selling a large selection of name brand, orthopedic and diabetic shoes. Your complete satisfaction is Gino’s number one priority! Make Family Reunions Meaningful For The Family (Family Features) During the coming months, families are likely to spend more time together. Reunions that have been postponed during the pandemic will finally take place, and once those long-awaited hugs have been exchanged, everyone can settle in for some overdue catching up. However, the time many families spent apart over the past couple of years means important conversations may have been put on hold. A family reunion is a perfect opportunity to share stories, reminisce and discover what matters most to the people who matter most to you. Sitting down with loved ones to talk about their lives can be richly satisfying. Learning about memorable events, favorite activities and valuable lessons they have learned can help bring you closer to loved ones and get to know them in a different way. It can also help you create a meaningful tribute to a loved one when the time comes. Finding a way to start talking with a loved one may be the most difficult part, but once the conversation starts, it may be hard to stop. Consider these tips from RememberingALife.com, an online resource from the experts at the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) to get the conversation started. Start by sharing mutual stories. If you’ve taken a vacation together or shared a cherished experience,

discuss that first to get the conversation going. If your family member is hesitant, share your own stories first so he or she feels more comfortable. Ask questions. One of the easiest ways to start and maintain a conversation is by asking questions. If you’re not sure what to ask, try inquiring about your loved one’s proudest achievement, the best advice received, a favorite memory or greatest inspiration. A visual prompt like a photo album, souvenir or memento can also be a conversation starter. Take notes. Either during or after your conversation, make note of the important memories shared. If it won’t make your loved one uncomfortable, make an audio recording of your discussion so you can listen again later. Treat your talk as a beginning. Use it as a springboard for more conversations, during which you can openly talk about any number of things, from reflecting on the past to planning for the future. Designed to be a fun and easy way to help get the discussion started, NFDA created “Have the Talk of a Lifetime” conversation cards featuring thoughtprovoking questions. The things you discuss may be helpful when your family must make important decisions about how you wish to remember and honor your loved one passes away.

When the time comes, make it meaningful. These shared conversations may help your family plan a meaningful funeral or life tribute event for your loved one that honors his or her life while giving you, your family and other friends a chance to reminisce and say goodbye. When the time comes, memorialization can be an important step in the journey toward healing. When you’re preserving your family’s legacy, resources such as RememberingALife.com can provide helpful information about memorialization and other end-of-life matters.

No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum Opening for the Season

The No. 9 Coal Mine was first opened in 1855 by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. A large vein of Anthracite coal, known as the Mammoth Vein, was the main focus of mining operations in the Panther Valley. Early mining operations in the area were located in the town of Summit Hill, just above Lansford. As the mines in Summit Hill encountered ever increasing levels of groundwater, other methods needed to be employed to reach the coal. The No. 9 Mine is driven at a much lower elevation than the mines in nearby Summit Hill. As the tunnel was being driven it allowed groundwater to naturally run out from the mine portal without the need of pumps. The tunnel was driven into the mountain far enough to reach the first vein of coal by the end of 1857. The following year the No. 9 Mine was contracted to produce 90,000 tons of Anthracite coal for the company. The No. 9 Mine operated from 1855 until

June of 1972, making it the longest continuously operated deep Anthracite coal mine in the world. The No. 9 Mine was left abandoned until a local group, committed to preserving the regions coal mining heritage, took control of the property in 1992. This group is known as the Panther Creek Valley Foundation and now operates the No. 9 Mine as a museum. Restoration work on the mine began in 1995 and the first tours inside began in 2002. Visitors to the mine ride by rail 1,600 feet into the mountain before embarking on a 600-foot guided walking tour. Tourists can examine the original 700-foot deep mine shaft, walk the “muleway” where young men guided the mules between the different levels of the mine, and see a miner’s hospital cut into solid rock. Outside on the grounds is the museum, housed in the No.9 Mine’s original “Wash Shanty” constructed before the First World War. The museum houses the largest

Tips To Avoid Phone Scams (BPT) - What do you do when your cell phone rings? If you automatically answer whether you recognize the caller or not, you aren't alone. But, chances are good that the person on the other end may be a scammer looking to trick you into giving out personal information. Vishing (or voice phishing) involves scammers calling you on your phone and phishing (fishing) for information. Vishers impersonate bank, credit card company or government officials, say they represent a charity or call you with too-good-to-be-true offers. Experts even predict vishing calls will make up almost half of all cell phone calls in the near future. "Impersonators, also known as 'Vishers', are getting creative about how they obtain access to financial accounts. They'll often pressure you for personal information, passcodes or ask to take over your mobile device by posing as your bank and telling you there is fraud on your account," said Chip Kohlweiler, Senior Vice President of Security at Navy Federal Credit

Union. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and others have identified several common angles that scammers like to use, such as impersonating a government agency, debt relief and credit repair, extended car warranties and prize wins, among others. It's all to catch you off guard and get you to share your personal information like bank or credit card information and details like your birthdate or Social Security Number. That's why knowing how to spot a scam and how to protect yourself and your personal information is so important. Here are five easy steps to protect yourself: • Don't let yourself be pressured into giving information over the phone. Keep personal information and passcodes private and never give it out during an unsolicited phone call. • Don't download any troubleshooting apps because they'll allow the fraudster to take over your device. • If you think a call might really be

Panorama Community Magazine from your bank, insurance or credit card company, find their phone number on your statement or card and call that number. • Educate yourself about common scam practices. For example, the IRS will never ask for payments over the phone, as well as won't ask for payment in cash, gift cards, wire transfers or your debit/credit card information. They generally reach out through the mail before they call. • Some phone providers and many smartphones have call-blocking tools that'll allow you to block calls from undesirable numbers. If you get a scam call, block the number. "Never share your one-time passcodes with anyone especially over the phone unless you placed the call to the known number. Be skeptical of requests like this and call the number on your statement to speak to a representative," added Kohlweiler. Ultimately, the goal is to keep your personal information and financial accounts secure. With these tips in mind, you can avoid falling victim to fraud.

Charles Dillon "Casey" Stengel — " r o s s e f o r P d l O e "Th cHugh

By Rev. Connell A. M

Casey Stengel was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 30, 1891 and died September 29, 1975 in Glendale, California. Charles Dillon Stengel got his nickname of Casey because of being born in Kansas City. Most of us know about his managing career with the Yankees but not much about his playing career. Casey played in the Majors for 14 years, and while not a superstar, he was a better than average player. Stengel appeared in 1,277 career games with 1,219 hits and 60 homeruns. He played in 12 games in 3 World Series, batted .393 and won 2 games for the Giants with homeruns. Casey played for 5 different National League teams: Brooklyn 1912-17, Pittsburgh 1918-19, Philadelphia 1920-21, the Giants 1921-23 and the Braves in 1924-25. Casey was always a colorful figure even during his playing days. In all, including Minor League managing, Stengel spent 53 years in baseball. Casey Stengel’s years as a Major League manager were far from successful. He initially managed Brooklyn from 193436 and the Boston Bees from 1938-43. None of these teams finished in the Frist Division and only one of the Boston teams finished over .500. Throughout his life, Stengel was totally dedicated to baseball and his wife, Edna. Before his success in baseball, Stengel spent some time while in the Minors studying Dentistry. Casey was a clown as a player as well as when he managed. He always had a ton of stories and spoke a dialect which was called “Stengelese” by sportswriters. On one of his last Major League stops as a player, Casey found a manhole on the field, and while people were not paying attention, he lifted the manhole cover and hid in the hole and casually popped out and made the catch of a lazy pop to right field. When he

returned to Brooklyn after being traded to Pittsburg, he was roundly booed. Casey hid a sparrow under his hat and calmly removed his cap when he came to bat, and the crowd burst into laughter. Stengel learned the most when he played for the great Giant manager, John McGraw who is tied with Casey for the most pennants won at 10. He learned about platooning players which he himself as a player, detested. Casey would use the platoon system nearly 30 years later as a Yankee manager. Casey Stengel holds the distinction of hitting the first World Series homerun in Yankee Stadium, an inside the park, to win a Series game against the Yankees. Casey also won another game with a homerun although the Yankees won the 1923 Series 4 games to 2. After the Series, Casey was traded to Boston and batted .280 in 1924 but played only 12 games in 1925 before taking a managerial Minor League job with Worcester and serving as Club President. He continued to manage in the Minors until he became Dodger manager in 1934. After being fired in 1936, Stengel managed the Boston Bees from 1938 through 1943. Charlie Grimm hired Casey to be a Minor League manager after Boston let him go. Casey did well as a Minor League manager skipper. In 1948 with the Oakland Oaks, Casey was named Minor League Manager of the Year. To the surprise of all, George Weiss, a longtime friend and Yankee GM though Stengel was a fine manager and hired him to manage the Yankees. Casey went on to win 10 Pennants and 7 World Series. Casey managed the Yankees for 12 seasons. Casey Stengel’s career spanned the era from Christy Mathewson to Tom Seaver. Stengel won 5 straight Pennants and World Series from 1949 through 1953. The 3 Series the Yankees lost were to

APRIL 2022

Panorama Community Magazine Brooklyn in 1955, Milwaukee in 1957 and Pittsburgh in 1960 which led to the firing of Stengel. During his 12 years in New York, Stengel averaged 95 wins in the 154 game season. The only time Stengel eclipsed the 100 winning mark was in 1954 when the Yankees won 103 games but finished second to Cleveland which won 111 games with the great pitching staff of Bob Feller, Mike Garcia, Bob Lemon, Hal Newhouser and Early Wynn. Cleveland was upset in the Series by the Giants 4-0 who were led by Dusty Rhodes. Stengel finished with a career record of 1905 and 1842 in regular season play for a .508 winning percentage. Many of his losses came from the sub-mediocre Brooklyn and Boston Clubs and the hapless Mets which went 40-120 in their initial year with Casey at the helm. Stengel’s Mets won in the low 50s the next couple of years. However, Casey was very successful in popularizing the Mets. A broken hip led to his retirement. Casey Stengel was not popular with many Yankee players but was well liked by superstar, Mickey Mantle. Stengel changed Mantle from an erratic shortstop to a solid centerfielder with great speed. Many of the Yankees disliked Stengel’s platoon system but it did pay dividends. Under Stengel, the Yankees were famous for picking up key players for the Pennant stretch run. My favorite pickup was “The Big Cat” Johnny Mize. Under Stengel, the Yankees had the big three of starting pitchers – Eddie Lopat, Vic Raschi and Allie Reynolds. They were the foundation of the 1949 through 1953 teams. Those teams won 5 consecutive championships. Among the other effective pitchers were reliever Joe Page and pickup former pitching stars Ewell Blackwell and Johnny Sain. After losing to Pittsburgh in the 1960 World Series, the Yankees fired Stengel. The Yankees lost to the Pirates when Bill Mazeroski homered off Ralph Terry. The Yankees heavily outscored the Pirates in the Series but lost 4 games to 3. Yankee management felt that Stengel made a big mistake starting Art Ditmar rather than Whitey Ford. Ditmar had a whopping 21.60 ERA in 2 World Series appearances while Whitey Ford easily handled the Pirates pitching with 2 complete game shutouts. During the early part of the next season, Ditmar was traded and went 2-15 with an ERA near 6.00 before retiring. Stengel was not that popular among Yankee players

APRIL 2022

while Ralph Houk was. Houk was given the manager’s job. Stengel had a terrific run with the Yankees and became a big asset in popularizing the Mets despite their awful record in their early years. Casey Stengel’s favorite pitcher, who also is mine, was Allie Reynolds. Reynolds was just as important to the Yankees of Stengel’s days as Mariano Rivera was to Torre’s Yankees. We must not forget that the Yankees had much of their success against the Brooklyn Dodgers, one of the greatest lineups of all-time, certainly superior to the top Dodger’s teams of today. Cards of Stengel are rather plentiful. The best one I have is a 1940 Play-ball that depicts Stengel as the manager of the Boston Bees. He appears in the 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1953 Bowman Black and White set in which he is the most expensive card in the set, running a few hundred dollars in Ex-Mt condition. The cards from 1950 – 1952 run about $30 to $60 in Excellent or better condition. After Topps bought out Bowman after the 1955 season, Stengel appeared in many Topps sets through 1965 and these cards mainly run between $10 and $20.

Interviewing Tips to Help You Land a New Job (Family Features) With so many job openings these days, you may think you’ll have an easy time sliding into a new role. Not so fast. Because of the huge number of options available and plenty of workers contemplating changes, you’re likely to encounter some competition to land the job you want. A solid interview can help you close the deal. Consider these five tips to help you make a great impression and land the job of your dreams: 1. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Avoid thinking of the interview as your first step toward a new job. Once you set the appointment, it’s time to take a deeper dive to learn as much as you can about the company and position. Ideally, you did some of this legwork when you created a custom resume and cover letter, but for the interview, you need to know more. After arming yourself with all the information you can, practice answers to questions you expect the interviewer to ask. 2. Decide what the interviewer should know about you. Using the job description as a guide, create a list of points you want to communicate to show how your experience and knowledge fit the role. During the interview, pay attention to opportunities for sharing these details about your skillset. Most interviewers will give you the opportunity to add information you haven’t covered; use this time to deliver a succinct summary of how you can succeed in the position. 3. Create your own list of questions. An interview isn’t just about determining whether you’re a fit for a job; you also need to decide whether the job is a fit for you. Think about what you need to know in order to feel confident accepting an offer. You might organize your thoughts by considering what is essential in a new job and what aspects are “nice to have.” 4. Present yourself as a winning candidate. Impressions are everything when it comes to interviews. Dress to impress with well-fitted clothing appropriate for the job and practice good grooming habits, including details like trimming your nails and minimizing distractions like pet hair. Arrive early enough that you’re not rushed or flustered when you check in for your appointment. Use good posture, a firm handshake and a clear, confident voice. Speak authoritatively but respectfully and try to make the interview a comfortable, conversational exchange. 5. Leave a lasting impression. Before you end the interviw, ask for clear insight on the next steps in the process. Within 24 hours, send follow-up messages to each person you met with. Thank them for their time and include references specific to your conversation, such as elaborating on a question or reiterating a key point. This shouldn’t be a copy-paste message, but rather a tailored one to each individual. Close by reiterating your interest and how your skills are a fit. s r e t t Ma Will your money last as long as you do? by Edward Jones - Financial Advisors We all hope for long, healthy lives. But there’s a serious “side effect” of longevity – the possibility of outliving our money. How can you help prevent this? It’s useful to know the seriousness of the threat. Consider this: About 41% of all U.S. homes in which the head of the household is between 35 and 64 are projected to run short of money in retirement, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

While this statistic indicates a cause for concern, it certainly doesn’t mean that you are necessarily headed for trouble – because there’s a lot you can do to help build and manage enough resources to last a lifetime. Here are a few suggestions: • Consider your estimated longevity. On average, a 65-year-old man can expect to live another 17 years, while a 65-year-old woman can anticipate about 20 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Of course, you’ll want to take into account your health and family history of longevity to arrive at a reasonable

estimate. You can then use this figure to help determine how much money you’ll eventually need. To play it safe, you might even want to try to build an income stream that can last beyond your estimated lifespan, possibly up to age 90. • Don’t overlook health care costs. When budgeting for retirement, allow enough for your health care expenses, which can be considerable. Even with Medicare, you can expect to spend anywhere from $4,500 to $6,500 per year, per person, for traditional medical costs. Also, you may want to prepare for two to three years of long-

Panorama Community Magazine term care expenses, which currently range from about $50,000 per year for home health care to over $100,000 per year for a private room in a nursing home. • Keep building assets for retirement. While you’re working, constantly try to put away as much money as possible for your retirement years. Each year your salary goes up, increase your contributions to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. You may also want to contribute to an IRA, depending on your goals. And within your retirement savings, make sure you devote a reasonable percentage of your investment dollars to growth-oriented vehicles that align with your goals and risk tolerance. • Seek out sources of guaranteed income. As a retiree, you will receive Social Security benefits – and the longer you wait before claiming them, the bigger your monthly checks will be. But you might also consider investments that can provide a source of income you can’t outlive, such as annuities. • Revisit your strategy before you retire. As you near retirement, you may want to review your investment strategy, possibly adjusting your risk level so that your portfolio would be somewhat less susceptible to market volatility. This is also a good time to review your spending needs in retirement. • Maintain a reasonable withdrawal rate. Once you are retired, you’ll likely need to start withdrawing from your 401(k), IRA and other investment accounts. To avoid taking out too much money too early in your retirement, you’ll need to set a reasonable, sustainable withdrawal rate based on your assets, age and retirement lifestyle. A financial advisor can help you determine an appropriate rate. It will take dedication and determination to help ensure your money doesn’t run out during your lifetime. But you’d probably agree that it’s well worth the effort.

How to Improve Your Financial Health

(Family Features) Your financial health is just as important as your physical and mental health. Money affects almost every aspect of your life and can be the determining factor in many of your dayto-day decisions. Being financially healthy isn’t just about how much money you have in the bank. It also encompasses your financial capability and how you feel about money or how money makes you feel. Start by doing a self-check to determine your financial health. Look at where your accounts currently stand, including the statuses and balances. The balances in your accounts can be used to calculate your net worth, which is a numerical indicator of your overall financial health from an accounting standpoint. Also consider your feelings and relationship with money, including the emotions you experience when someone brings up topics involving money. Then determine if you are a saver or spender. Understanding how you feel about your finances and why you have these feelings can help you improve your overall financial health along with these tips from the financial experts at kinly, a financial services

company helping Black America build generational wealth. Set Financial Goals To improve your financial health, start by setting short-term, mid-term and long-term financial S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound) goals. S.M.A.R.T. goal setting can help you be more specific, provide a way to measure your progress, allow you to create a plan to make things more achievable, ensure your goals are in line with other objectives and provide deadlines, so your financial goals don’t get lost in the shuffle of day-to-day life. Create a Money Plan A money plan is a guide that details how you want to use your income monthly. This plan should consider the money you want to save and the money you want to spend. As you add your list of expenses, use this opportunity Continued on next page I don’t want to make the wrong decision for the one person who always made the right ones.” Now is the time to make the right decisions for you and your family. Filing An Extension — Do You Need It? What Does It Mean? Tax returns are “due April 18”. What does this really mean? It means that the return, the report and the taxes are due April 18, but you can file an extension which gives you until October 15 to file the report, however the taxes are due April 18. If you file an extension and owe money you must pay it with the extension or you will still pay late payment fees and interest. The penalty and interest you save are for the late filing fee. If you have a refund due, you really do not have to file an extension. You

have up to three years to file your return to get your refund. So for 2021 taxes, you have until April 15, 2025 to file and get your money back. Now, the exception the rule, Berkheimer local taxes, you MUST file an extension to avoid the $25.00 late filing fee. And, they require proof of an accepted extension to the Federal or PA return. Identity theft this year is causing a big hiccup in extensions for 2021. Since ID Theft is rampant extensions for Honest Abe customers will be

filed April 12. This will give us ample time to file the extension, and if your extension is rejected due to ID theft saying a return is already filed, we will have time to deal with the problem. Also, for our annual tax customers, who we see only at tax time, due to volume and past experience we are no longer doing “courtesy extensions”. If you need an extension, you must contact us and confirm you need an extension. New customers are welcome that need an extension to file. Again, we ask that you come in before April 12, there will be a fee of $40, which will be applied to your tax preparation. Call us today, 570-668-8297, or come see us at 259 Claremont Avenue, Hometown, Tamaqua, PA. We have a full staff to serve you Monday through Saturday.

Continued from previous page to review where your money is going and if your spending is in line with the financial goals you’ve set. This is also an opportunity to look for ways to reduce or eliminate spending so your money can be used for things that are important to you, like saving for a down payment on a car or home, or purchasing an item from your wish list. Expand Your Financial Knowledge Explore ways to become more comfortable with money and take control

of your financial future. Your relationship with money and how you feel about it make up your money story. Money stories involve emotions, beliefs and experiences with money from childhood to adulthood. Start by spending 1020 minutes each day exploring topics around money or personal finances to help build your knowledge base. You can do this by listening to podcasts, reading books, browsing reputable personal finance websites or exploring financial education resources provided by your financial institution. If you need a more personalized approach to developing a better relationship with your finances, explore working with a financial coach. Your

financial coach can work with you on a range of fundamental money management skills. For example, a financial coach can help you overcome financial anxiety or come up with a debt repayment strategy. The coach can help guide, teach, empower and challenge you to grow into a savvy money user. When determining your financial health, remember personal finance is personal. The financial decisions you make today impact your overall financial health. Determine what financial success looks like for you and incorporate mindfulness, resources and other financially beneficial strategies to help improve your relationship with your finances.

Can common medicines prevent cancer? Well, some just might do so as reported in a recent issue of MDLinx. Here they are: 1) metformin. This medication is used as treatment for type 2 (adult onset) diabetes. Long term use is associated with a decreased incidence of liver, esophageal, pancreatic and gastric cancer. 2) aspirin and similar pain medications. Asprin and compounds like ibuprofen (Motrin), naproxyn (Aleve) and (Celebrex) may help prevent colon cancer especially if combined with diet, lifestyle, and environmental changes. 3) statins. Statins such as atorvastatin, simvastatin, lovastatin, and fluvastatin may help prevent pancreatic cancer. 4) antibiotics. Certain antibiotics

are often used as therapy for stomach ulcerations which have been associated with gastric cancer. Now a disclaimer: virtually all medications have some degree of risk. For example, aspirin has been routinely recommended to help prevent heart attacks. Recently the tide has shifted and many doctors have stopped

by Stephen Schleicher, MD recommending once daily aspirin because the risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding seems to outweigh the benefit of heart attack prevention. Hopefully the medicines cited above do indeed prevent cancer with acceptable risk. More data is needed, so stay tuned.

The Benefits of Physical Therapy to Aging Well By: Rachael Timm, Marketing Director of Heritage Hill Senior Community With age, our bodies naturally begin to slow down. Along with a decrease in muscle strength, flexibility and balance, seniors may find themselves less active than they once were. Participating in a physical therapy program is a great way to keep older adults physically fit, allowing them to move around more comfortably and with better confidence. Physical therapists provide an individualized treatment plan, using the appropriate exercises and techniques to promote independence and improve quality of life. While their objective is to help seniors achieve their functional goals to complete activities of daily living, there are many more benefits to physical therapy, including: • Managing the effects of

chronic medical conditions, such as osteoporosis, where bones become weak and brittle, making them more susceptible to fractures and arthritis. Physical therapy and a regular exercise plan are steps in coping with chronic pain more effectively than medication alone. Therapeutic exercises also relieve discomfort while preserving the strength and use of joints. • Reducing the risk of falls and other injuries. There are several causes of poor balance—muscle weakness and unstable joints, difficulties with eyesight, and medication side effects. Injuries from falls and other accidents can jeopardize mobility and independence. Physical therapists use various exercises to increase muscle strength and flexibility, maintain stability, and improve posture.

When Asleep, Does Your Body “Jump”! by John Degenhart, DC An 82-year-old woman came to my office and exclaimed, “Only when I lie down to rest, my whole body “jumps”. No doctor can help me, can you?” I explained to her that many patients in my practice, if their spine misaligns, it causes like an electrical “jolt” to the body, where the entire body shakes for a split second. And as I make gentle chiropractic adjustments, the nerves of the body heal, and the jolts gradually just fade away. Then she asked, “But why does it only occur when I lay down to rest?” What I have observed for 42 years and seeing thousands of patients, is that while we are awake and moving and doing our chores, the muscles are kept in motion and the body won’t jerk. But once we lie down, as the body tries to rest, then the body gives us the signal that a nerve is pinched. So the body jolts due to pinched nerves that are busy while we are busy, but the muscles of the body “jump” when at rest. She said, “Let’s give it a go!” So I started. Her left leg was ½” longer, and I corrected her misaligned left sacroiliac joint. Her neck was out to the right. She sits up to watch T.V., lets her head sag to the side, and it misaligns her neck. So I don’t want to crack an 82-year old’s neck. I used a gentle drop with the table. She came in two times a week and in three weeks she exclaimed, “My body-jumping is gone—I could see why they voted this office the best chiropractic office in town four years in a row!” To be honest, we strive to be our best, but the truth is, the body is magnificent. I know you get better results by being gentle with the spine; especially an 82-year-old spine. So if you know somebody who upon rest, their body “jumps” send them in. I love seeing the excitement on people’s faces when you solve a problem that other doctors didn’t understand

Prostate Cancer Awareness According to the American Cancer Society, other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men, with about one in eight men being diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. The ACS estimates that there will be almost 12,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in Pennsylvania in 2022. There are several risk factors associated with prostate cancer, including family history, race, diet, etc., but the most common factor is age. Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men. About six in ten cases are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40. The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 66. While there are a lot of risk factors for prostate cancer, there are also good survival statistics associated with the disease. Survival rates for prostate cancer are very high. According to statistics from the National Institute of Health, 3.1 million men are estimated to be living with prostate cancer in the United States.

At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazelton, we use radiation therapy to treat prostate cancer. Radiation therapy is used to treat prostate cancer painlessly and noninvasively. During treatment, highenergy X-rays are delivered to the prostate cancer safely and effectively. Side effects are usually minimal, and most patients return to their normal activities following each treatment. There are two types of radiation therapy for prostate cancer. External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is administered with a linear accelerator (LINAC) that generates an X-ray beam. The treatment is safe and will not burn or hurt you. EBRT destroys cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. A second treatment option for prostate cancer is brachytherapy, a type of internal radiation therapy in which a radiation oncologist inserts high-energy radioactive seeds into the prostate. The seeds emit radiation to the immediate surrounding cancer cells over several months but will not make your body radioactive. After about a year,

Dr. James Deom

Director of Optometric Services, Comprehensive Eye Care, with a focus on Keratoconus, Pediatric and Brain Injury

the radioactive material degrades and the seeds that remain are harmless. Radiation therapy serves as an effective treatment for prostate cancer, working within cancer cells to damage their ability to multiply and spread. External radiation therapy treatments, such as EBRT, are delivered daily Monday through Friday and each treatment session only takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Several factors determine candidacy for radiation therapy treatment including the stage of the cancer, potential side effects, age, and overall health. Sometimes a combination of treatments is the best plan for treating prostate cancer. Before you make your final decision about your prostate cancer treatment, consider radiation therapy. It is best to know all your treatment options and it never hurts to get a second opinion.
