WTTC on BRAZIL: Surpassing 2019 numbers
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) revealed, through its Annual Economic Impact Report (EIR), that by the end of this year the sector's contribution to Brazil's GDP will surpass pre-pandemic levels, generating US$ 145.7 billion for the national economy , 5% above what was recorded in 2019.
Likewise, by the end of 2023, the Tourism sector is projected to exceed 2019 employment levels by 2.5%, generating 7.86 million opportunities in Brazil , which represents 7.8% of all vacancies in the country.
According to the same report, it is estimated that, by the end of 2023, the Tourism sector in Brazil will represent 7.8% of the economy.
In 2022, the travel and tourism sector's contribution to Brazil's GDP grew 22.7% compared to the previous year, reaching US$140.9 billion, which represented 7.6% of the Brazilian economy. Furthermore, it surpassed the contribution values reported in 2019, when the sector injected US$138.8 billion into the country.
The arrival of international travelers injected almost US$ 5 billion, that is, a growth of 50.5% compared to 2021. In turn, domestic travelers represented US$ 96.2 billion, 25% above 2021 values, also exceeding 2019 levels by 6%.
FecomercioSP on BRAZIL: 8% growth
Last year, Brazilian tourism grew 7.8% and had revenues of around R$189.4 billion, according to the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP). According to the entity, the data consolidates the recovery of the sector, which was one of the hardest hit by the new coronavirus pandemic.
In annual performance, the positive result was mainly driven by activities such as transport rental, which increased by 18.3% in the period. Only the road travel segment did not perform well in 2023, with a drop of -4%.
The study is based on information from the Annual Services Survey, using data updated with variations from the Monthly Services Survey, both from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The values are adjusted monthly by the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA), and activities that are totally or partially related to tourism were chosen.
Phocuswright's Latin America Report 2023
ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVES
Guilherme Dietze , FecomercioSPTensions in the Middle East are once again bringing uncertainty to the world economy. In Brazil, the immediate impact is on the exchange rate, with the appreciation of the dollar, a global trend that devalued the real, going from R$5 to fluctuating just below R$5.30 per dollar. If the situation continues for a longer period of time, the effects should come in greater pressure on inflation.
For now, prices in Brazil returned to accommodation in March, with a variation of 0.16% compared to 0.83% in February. In the last 12 months, inflation is 3.93%.
The Brazilian economy has recorded stronger results than expected at the beginning of this year, which helps to heat up the job market, increasing income and protecting against higher inflation. The unemployment rate measured by IBGE was 7.8% in the quarter ending in February, the lowest for the period since 2015. According to another data capture, from the Ministry of Labor, in February, the balance between hired and dismissed was 300 thousand formal jobs opening, with a formal contract. Last year, this balance had been 252 thousand.
The consequence of greater employability and greater consumption capacity can be seen in the performance of retail trade. According to IBGE, in February, sales rose 8.2% in February compared to the same month in 2023, with emphasis on the basic consumer segments, supermarkets and pharmacies, with respective increases of 9.6% and 18 .5%. Even the sectors most linked to credit also had a positive performance, as was the case with furniture and household appliances (+3.7%).
Although the economy's basic interest rate, the SELIC, continues to fall, at the current 10.75% per year, for the end consumer the reduction is still slower and more gradual. The average charged to consumers in Brazil, according to the Central Bank, is 21.4% per year, compared to 23.8% a year earlier. The level is still high, but it is gradually easing the financial cost of consumers when purchasing durable goods, such as refrigerators, televisions, cars, etc.
In the scope of services, the increase in February was 2.5%, with all five groups analyzed by IBGE showing an increase, from technology to transport and services provided to families. Focusing on tourism specifically, the FecomercioSP survey, based on IBGE data, shows a growth of 2.9% in February in the annual comparison and a turnover of R$ 14.8 billion in the period.
It is true that part of this increase comes from a recovery in demand. However, it is necessary to highlight that there is another part that is being driven by price growth. To give you an idea, the inflation of the main tourism services in Brazil rises 7.83% in 12 months, well above the 3.93% of the general national average, and with some items such as airline tickets and vehicle rentals that recorded an accumulated increase of 18.65% and 22.42%, respectively.
In general, there is still a positive path for the economy in 2024, but remaining in a limited expansion cycle, even more so with the latest episode of the review – for the worse – of the government's fiscal target. The zero deficit that was scheduled for this year will no longer happen and has been postponed to 2025, signaling an increase in government spending, putting pressure on interest rates, public debt and inflation. Unfortunately, Brazil is always stuck in its own trap of low growth.
IMPORTANT DATA:
• In February, Tourism grew in 23 states, with emphasis on the increase of 17.9% in Acre and 11.9% in the Federal District. São Paulo has the highest revenue, with a 34% share of the total, but showed stability in this second month of 2024, according to data from FecomercioSP.
• Defaults decline in the country in a period of one year. In March this year, 28.6% of families in Brazilian capitals had some outstanding account, a lower percentage than the 29.4% seen in the same period of 2023, according to the Consumer Debt and Default Survey, PEIC, from National Confederation of Commerce.
Consumer Confident Index (ICC) and Comerce Businessman (ICEC)
TRUST INDEXES:
The Consumer Confidence Index (ICC) fell 4.1% in March, going from 138.2 points in February to the current 132.5 points. Food inflation that is higher than the general average is the main villain behind this decline in São Paulo residents' optimism. However, this increase tends to be temporary and with the continued improvement in the job market it should contribute to a new cycle of expanding confidence. The Commerce Business Confidence Index (ICEC) continues its third consecutive increase and reaches 112.4 points in March, a monthly increase of 2% and an increase of 2.5% in the annual comparison. Sales data for January and February came in above expectations, contributing to increased optimism.

Google Insights
• Digitization of the market – Brazil digitized in 2 years what was supposed to be digitized in 10. Today, 85% of the Brazilian population has access to digital and this changes the way people consume. As already mentioned above, Brazilians spend 5h20 a day on apps, second only to Indonesia. Today the consumer has all industries in the palm of their hands.
• Market maturity – Previously there was organic room for growth in all industries. Nowadays, this does not happen, as Brazil is already a mature country in terms of consumption. If companies want more consumers, they need to bring them from competitors;
• Plural supply – Brazil has never had as many large companies as it does now, which results in a greater supply of products. In 2019, there were 350 large companies in Brazil. In 2022, this number rose to 925. The consumer is bombarded by more offers and products. Many of them compete with Tourism products.
• Consumers, especially on-line, look for ONE STOP SHOP

Source: Google/GA4
Note: Google migrated from Universal Analytics to GA4 in the middle of last year, so comparing the second half of the year to the first half reveals discrepancies. Check out Google's explanation for the new metric: Universal Analytics highlights total users (shown as Users) in most reports, while GA4 focuses on active users (which also appears as Users). Although the term users appears to be the same, the calculation of this metric is different between UA and GA4 because UA is using total users, and GA4 is using active users.
Depending on how often users return to your site, the total users metric in UA and the active users metric in GA4 may be more or less similar. It is not uncommon for there to be apparent discrepancies in user-related data between Google Analytics 4 and Universal Analytics. Discrepancies can reach 20%.
