PANROTAS BRAZILIAN OVERVIEW 2021/2022

EDITORIAL

24 PANROTAS BRAZILIAN OVERVIEW 2021/2022

RESEARCH AND DATA The year of 2020, for obvious reasons, was a completely atypical year, as well as the travel upturn. In the domestic market, we watched the rise in the search for direct sales and the strengthening of travel consultancy through professionals, agents, consultants, and specialized companies. In the international market, the travel agents and consultants are still the primary way of searching for products and services, even though there is much consultation and even partial sales directly with the suppliers. The corporate travel segment is still slowly getting back to normal, but still well below the pre-pandemic data (it hasn’t reached 50% yet). There haven’t been many closings of Tourism companies, despite the setbacks faced by all of them. Hereinafter, we present some research published in the second semester of 2021, which proves the trends in the sector and among travelers. DOMESTIC TRAVEL The leisure hotel business in many destinations, especially in the Northeast (the Brazilian Caribbean) and in Gramado, state of Rio Grande do Sul, already has better results in relation to 2019. The national hotel rates are, on average, above the ones practiced in 2019, unless in the destinations that depend on events and business trips. The higher the daily rate is, the greater is the increase in comparison to 2019. The domestic airline network will achieve a 100% recovery by December 2021 and in some cases an even better recoup than in 2019, with focus on leisure

travel (it used to be focused on business travel early). The events are starting to return with protocols and restrictions, and there is already the projection of having the New Year’s and Carnival celebrations. Many Brazilians who used to travel abroad started traveling within Brazil, in the niches of luxury, wellness, and family travel to resorts or rented houses, traveling with friends and to be in touch with nature (whether in a more active or contemplative way). INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL Brazilians are eager to travel abroad immediately, especially to the United States, Europe and Argentina. In Europe, at each announcement of a reopened country, the trips and consultations increase instantly. The same happened with most of the recent reopening cases: Switzerland, Spain, Germany, France and Portugal have already benefited from the reservations for New Year’s and even with bookings in the short-term. It is believed that there is an enormous, suppressed demand for traveling to the United States. Some Brazilians are quarantining in Mexico, Bahamas or the Caribbean to visit the country, although in a very small amount yet, compared to the 2 million tourists that we are used to sending over there. Miami, New York, Orlando and Florida, in general, are always in the searches as a travel intention as soon as the borders are opened. The Brazilians are ready to travel. Are the destinations and companies ready to welcome them?

LUXURY TRAVEL According to the FecomercioSP survey, there are 69 million families overall in Brazil, and the ones with an income higher than 25 minimum wages (around R$ 25 thousand) are merely 1.7 million families, which corresponds to 2.5% of the total. Among these families, almost 42% (712 thousand) are in the wealthiest state of Brazil, São Paulo. And adding the Federal District (139 thousand), nearly comprehends 50% of the total number of families with high income. They are followed right after by the states of Rio de Janeiro (129 thousand), Minas Gerais (124 thousand) and Rio Grande do Sul (110 thousand).
