Nokia Research Centre, Cambridge, UK
In recent years, nanotechnology has attracted billions in venture capital from research institutes, governments, and industries. Traditional nanofabrication techniques, such as CVD, sol-gel, and self-assembly have been intensively studied. However, the electrochemical nanofabrication technique—which offers huge benefits for manufacturing nanomaterials as well as broad applications in industries—has received scant attention compared to the traditional nanofabrication methods. This book summarizes different electrochemical nanofabrication methods and shows various essential applications in areas such as batteries, sensors, and future applications. Catalog no. Fracture Nanomechanics
Optics of Nanomaterials
Takayuki Kitamura, Hiroyuki Hirakata, Takashi Sumigawa, and Takahiro Shimada
Vladimir I. Gavrilenko Norfolk State University, Virginia, USA
Small structures of the micro/nanometer scale, such as electronic/optic devices and MEMS/NEMS have recently been developed, and the size of their elements now approaches the nano/atomic scale. This book discusses the fracture behavior of nano/atomic elements such as nanofilms and nanowires and focuses on the initiation and propagation of interface crack and mechanical instability criterion of atomic structures. It covers the fundamentals and the applicability of the top-down (conventional fracture mechanics to nanoscale) and bottom-up (atomic mechanics including ab initio simulation) concepts. The book also introduces multiphysics characteristics of nanoelements.
While the chemistry, physics, and optical properties of simple atoms and molecules are well understood, this book demonstrates that there is much to be learned about the optics of nanomaterials. Through comparative analysis of the size-dependent optical response from nanomaterials, it is shown that although strides have been made in computational chemistry and physics, bridging length scales from nano to macro remains a major challenge. The book demonstrates that organic, molecular, polymer, and biological systems are potentially useful models for assembly. Our progress in understanding the optical properties of biological nanomaterials is an important driving force for a variety of applications.

This book concentrates on the latest developments in our understanding of solid-state device physics. The material presented is mainly experimental and based on CdTe thin-film solar cells. It extends these new findings to CIGS thin-film solar cells and presents a new device design based on graded bandgap multilayer solar cells. This design has been experimentally tested using the well-researched GaAs/AlGaAs system and initial devices have shown impressive device parameters. These devices are capable of absorbing all radiation (UV, visible, and infra-red) within the solar spectrum and combines impact ionization and impurity photovoltaic effects. The improved device understanding presented in this book should impact and guide future device design and low-cost thin-film solar panel manufacturing.

This book describes energy loss magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD), a phenomenon in energy loss spectroscopy discovered in 2006. EMCD is the equivalent of XMCD but is based on fast probe electrons in the electron microscope. A spatial resolution of 2 nm has been demonstrated, and the lattice-resolved mapping of atomic spins appears feasible. EMCD is, thus, a promising technique for magnetic studies on the nanometer and sub-nanometer scale It provides the technical and logistic advantages of electron microscopy, such as in situ chemical and structural information, easy access, and low cost. Applied Bohmian Mechanics From Nanoscale Systems to Cosmology Edited by
Xavier Oriols Pladevall and Jordi Mompart
Optical Electronics Self-Organized Integration and Applications Tetsuzo Yoshimura Tokyo University of Technology, Japan
Universitaat Autònoma de Barcelona, Bellaterra, Spain
The development of quantum mechanics was a meandering path full of personal disputes where scientists were forced to abandon well-established classical concepts to explore new and imaginative routes. This book demonstrates the huge practical utility of another of these routes in explaining quantum phenomena in various research fields. Bohmian mechanics—the formulation of the quantum theory pioneered by Louis de Broglie and David Bohm—offers an alternative mathematical formulation of quantum phenomena in terms of quantum trajectories. It sheds light on the limits and extensions of our present understanding of quantum mechanics toward other paradigms, such as relativity and cosmology.
This book proposes and reviews comprehensive strategies for constructing optoelectronic systems with minimized optics excess. It describes the core technologies such as self-organized optical waveguides based on self-organized lightwave network (SOLNET), three-dimensional optical circuits, material-saving heterogeneous thin-film device integration process (PL-Pack with SORT), high-speed/small-size light modulators, and optical switches. The book also presents applications of optical electronics, including integrated optical interconnects within computers. It explores massive optical switching systems utilizing three-dimensional self-organized optical circuits, solar energy conversion systems, and bio/medical photonics such as cancer therapy.

Physics and Chemistry at Low Temperatures
Nanocomputing Computational Physics for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
Edited by
Jang-Yu Hsu
Leonid Khriachtchev
National Cheng Kung University, Tainan City, China
University of Helsinki, Finland
Tunneling reactions in chemistry are characterized by the low-temperature limit when the classical contribution is negligible. Many practical applications benefit from the lack of heat and have a deep physical basis. The advantages of chemical synthesis at low temperatures have also been demonstrated. This book covers fundamental and practical aspects of the processes and experimental and theoretical methods used in the field. The chapters are written by leading scientists who have very strong experience in the selected topics, and many practical recommendations can be found in the book.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the computational physics for nanoscience and nanotechnology. Based on MATLAB® and the C++ distributed computing paradigm, the book gives instructive explanations of the underlying physics for mesoscopic systems with many listed programs that readily compute physical properties into nanoscales. Many generated graphical pictures demonstrate not only the principles of physics, but also the methodology of computing. Catalog no. Femtosecond Laser-Matter Interaction Theory, Experiments and Applications
Power for the World The Emergence of Electricity from the Sun Edited by
Eugene G. Gamaly
Wolfgang Palz
Australian National University, Canberra
World Council of Renewable Energy, Belgium
This book covers the interaction of laser pulses with solids at nonrelativistic intensity. It connects phenomena from the subtle atomic motion on the nanoscale to the generation of extreme pressure and temperature in the interaction zone confined inside a solid. With mathematics kept to a minimum, this is a highly engaging and readable treatment for students and researchers in science and engineering. The book avoids complex mathematical formulae, making the content accessible to nontechnical readers. Useful summaries after each chapter provide compressed information for the quick estimates of major parameters in planned or performed experiments.
Divided into three parts, this volume provides a historical summary and gives a comprehensive overview of the present photovoltaic (PV) situation worldwide. The book includes sections entitled The Rising Sun in a Developing World, Solar Power for the World and PV Today and Forever. Describing future strategies for development and implementation, the author is a world leader in PV and all renewable energies. The book is illustrated with approximately 100 pictures. Catalog no. N10417, October 2010, 575 pp. ISBN: 978-981-4303-37-8, $79.95 / £49.99 Also available as an eBook

Nanotechnology Commercialization for Managers and Scientists Edited by
Wim Helwegen
“Science is fun!” Is the motto of this fun-filled book by Professor Reinhard Renneberg. The book explores intriguing issues such as peculiarities in Japanese washing machines, how to make German-style beer from rice, and how snow can be made from dead frost-bacteria. It discusses the use of bio-ethanol as a car fuel—along with its environmental implications, discusses the cloning of cats, and describes attempts to eliminate breast cancer genes before a baby is born. It also asks whether the financial crisis could be solved by breeding better stock market traders and discusses how to measure the fitness of students. Catalog no.
