Elvis Presley at a tender age with his mother, Gladys Love and father, Vernon Elvis Presley.

Born in 1935, Elvis grew up dirt-poor and disadvantaged in Tupelo, Mississippi. He was always optimistic and Elvis was convinced something amazing would happen to him in the future. He felt his future would be brighter than his childhood. Despite growing up in the depression, he had never doubted the better days that lay ahead of him. His parents, Gladys Love and Vernon Elvis Presley, knew they would not have the material support to help Elvis pursue his dreams. At his young age, Presley was able to participate in a contest when he was ten years old. He came in second place at the country fair by singing "Old Sheep."

Even though he loved music, Elvis needed to make a living and he started a job as a truck driver. He never abandoned his passion for music.

Elvis Presley served in the army from 1958 to 1960. There, he earned a sharpshooter badge. He had been twenty three years old when he had been drafted as a recruit.

He was definitely not a Renaissance man. When performing, he gelled his hair back and his unique sense of style only pulled thousands of people to hear his smooth and energetic voice.

Even though older generations were suspicious of Elvis’ style and music, he shaped popular culture and influenced many musicians and music fans.

Even though many children dream to be famous, they do not succeed. This did not apply to Elvis Presley, The King of Rock and Roll.

There are many similarities between The Outsiders and the ever popular Elvis Presley. They may not have known each other, but they definitely acted in the same manner. Just like Elvis, Ponyboy and the Greaser gang come from disadvantaged families. Ponyboy lives the poor part of Oklahoma similarly to Elvis Presley, who grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi, in the low-class neighborhood. Both families did not have money, so only through determination and motivation, Ponyboy and Elvis survived through some difficult times.

Even though older generations were suspicious of Elvis’ style and music, he shaped popular culture and influenced many musicians and music fans.
