Government( Shutdown( Leaves( More( Questions(Than(Answers(for(Americans( By%Amy%F.% Panther%Press%Staff% For% 16% days,% the% United% States% government% entered% a% shutdown% that% curtailed% some% government% functions% and% left% over% 800,000% government%workers%unemployed.%% Beginning% on% October% 1% and% lasting% until% October% 16,% the% government% entered% a% rare% state% of% temporary% halt,% known% as% a% shutdown.% The% shutdown% occurred% due% to% disagreements% between% the% House% and% the% Senate.% There% are% wide% swaths%of% the% federal%government%that% require% funding%each%year%in%order%to%operate.%If%the%two%branches%of%Congress% cannot% reach% a% common% agreement% on% funding,% they% have% to% close% down.%% The% recent% shutdown% occurred% because% the% two% political% parties,% the% Democrats%and%Republicans,%could%not%agree.%Each%year,%the%House%and% the% Senate% are% responsible% for% passing% 12% bills% to% fund% the% federal% agencies% and% set% spending% priorities.% Congress% has% ignored% this% duty,% and% has% resorted% to% passing% stopgap% budgets% to% keep% the% government% funded% and% running.% The% last% stopgap% bill% passed% on% March% 28% and% ended% September% 30,% the% day% before% the% shutdown.% Congress% could’ve% passed% another% stopgap% bill,% but% Capitol% Hill% failed% to% agree% on% a% new% budget% for% the% 2013[2014% financial% year.% During% the% shutdown,% many% national% government% functions% and% organizations% such% as% national% museums(national%parks,%and%NASA%shut%down%their%operations.% %(Continued(on(next(page)%
