Music has an ability to enrich us far beyond the beauty of sound — it stimulates our mind, ignites our imagination and inspires our creativity. Music brings people from all walks of life together through inclusive and enriching experiences. In 2018 we can’t wait to share an exciting and diverse offering for people of all ages within the community. Award-winning British composer, presenter and educator Paul Rissmann returns to lead our fourth annual Festival of Learning, in which we are proud to present a brand new ASO commission based on Kobi Yamada’s glorious picture book What do you do with an idea? — a performance that emphasises the incredible power we all have to make positive change in the world. Our mission to inspire and connect the musical community continues with the return of our Come & Play program, offering musicians from all walks of life the opportunity to hone their skills alongside their ASO colleagues. In 2018 we continue our commitment to reach those in broader Adelaide through our proud partnership with Community Centres SA, a collaboration that allows us to interact with audiences who aren’t always able to easily attend our CBD concerts. We hope that you will join us to celebrate the power of music in bringing us all together.

Orche st ra Fant ast i ca ! Experience the sights and sounds of 12 fantastic ASO musicians as they bring their instruments to life in the wonderful settings of Adelaide’s Community Centres. Led and developed by the ASO’s own Peter Duggan, who is joined by singer Susan Ferguson, children aged 4-8 will be encouraged to sing, dance and play whilst actively learning about the instruments of the orchestra.

Once again we bring this vibrant early childhood music program to communities, giving children a chance to sing, dance and experience the sounds and sights of various musical instruments. Experience what happens when 20 secondary school students work intensively and collaboratively with internationally acclaimed composer and educator, Paul Rissmann, over the course of a week. Inspired by South Australia’s intriguing obsession with the character Pierrot Lunaire at the time of World War I, Rissmann leads students through a re-imagining of the extraordinary music of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella and Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin. In this exciting finale concert, a brand-new work will be premiered by the student ensemble and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, performed on stage at Elder Hall. The Pierrot Project forms part of a larger initiative funded by the Australian Research Council Linkage grant scheme and the State Library of South Australia. The ‘Beyond the Stage’ project, which is being conducted by the University of Adelaide, explores the performing arts in South Australia during the First World War.

Music continues to inspire in extraordinary and unexpected ways. Ignite a love of music in your family by exploring what’s on offer in our annual Festival of Learning. In 2018, our Festival of Learning returns to the Adelaide Town Hall for a week-long celebration of music making. Award winning British presenter, composer and educator Paul Rissmann is back to share his love of music with children and families of all ages. The World Premiere of ASO’s brand new commission, What do you do with an idea? sits as a centrepiece of the Festival with a special accompanying workshop for children aged 7+. Composed by Paul Rissmann, this immersive work brings together orchestral music with theatre, dance and young voices, to celebrate the power of imagination, creativity and the evolution of ideas.
