What is an orchestra but a community of musicians devoted to sharing their love of their artform across generations? The ASO has demonstrated its commitment to music education and, again in 2018, will play an integral role in delivering quality musical offerings for young people of all ages, through its Learning and Family programs. Of particular pride are the new works the ASO has commissioned specifically for young people over the last few years. Again in 2018, we will see the world premiere of a piece written specifically for ages 9 - 12 by Paul Rissmann, supported by Roger and Helen Salkeld. The Festival of Learning will again feature as the centrepiece of the Learning Program. These concerts are supported by professional development workshops for teachers (even non-music ones!) to impart best practice music education principles and create greater impact. Music has the ability to be transformative, engaging and community-building. The ASO’s Learning program, with its participation of young people at the centre, is the best example of future proofing music in our state so that its role in our society will continue into the future. I look forward to sharing our excellent work with you in the next year.
Ciara Ferguson Professional Pathways Participant 2017 Rob Stobbe CEO, SA Power Networks
In an ever changing world, creativity is as important as literacy and numeracy. Here at SA Power Networks we are proud of our support of music education which supports our commitment to cultural development and creative excellence in our community. The 2018 Learning Program, with its myriad offerings and support for teachers as well as access for young people, will reach over 18,000 students. This is a growth of over 60% in three years and shows how important a resource the ASO is for us all. Equipping young people with the skills to think differently, problem solve and think laterally will engender a life-long love for music, the arts and the curiosity required in today’s society.
As a participant in the ASO’s Professional Pathways program, I’ve had opportunities to sit in on rehearsals, attend talks with world-class guest musicians and composers; making connections and gaining valuable insights. I’ve also been able to lead programs with children, allowing me to develop my own presenting skills. I love the drive and passion that ASO have for introducing orchestral music to new audiences, by reaching out to communities and schools – making our world-class musicians accessible to more people. I love the ASO’s openness to many musical genres and the fact that they are commissioning new music, bringing the work of living composers to life.
Kilparrin has been involved in the ASO’s Learning Program for several years. Students are enthusiastically engaged during lessons prior to the concert by using the various learning resources provided. During the concert, the orchestra always makes us feel welcome and are very inclusive. For example, our children with vision impairments are able to sit up the front and I think a highlight was when the harpist asked if some of our students would like to have a play after the concert, which for those with hearing impairments meant they could feel the vibrations of the instrument. I also attend the Professional Development sessions with Paul Rissmann. Paul’s passion for music education provides me with new ideas for teaching innovative music lessons, keeping the students engaged and continuously extending their learning. The Festival of Learning is something that we look forward to every year.
The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra acknowledges that the land we make music on today is the traditional country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains and pays respect to Elders past and present. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land. We acknowledge that they are of continuing importance to the Kaurna people living today.

In 2018, our annual Festival of Learning returns to the Adelaide Town Hall for a week-long celebration of music-making. Award-winning British presenter, composer and educator Paul Rissmann is back to share his love of music with students ranging from kindergarten to tertiary level. The World Premiere of ASO’s brand new commission, What do you do with an idea? is the centrepiece of the Festival. Composed by Paul Rissmann, this immersive work brings together orchestral music with theatre, dance and young voices, to celebrate the power of imagination, creativity, and the evolution of ideas. For the first time this year, each activity in the Festival of Learning is accompanied by a professional development workshop for teachers, led by Paul Rissmann.
Are you a DECD category 1-3 school? W h at d o yo u d o with an idea? A brand new ASO commission by Paul Rissmann based on the glorious picture book What do you do with an idea? by Kobi Yamada and illustrated by Mae Besom. It’s the story of one brilliant idea and the child who helps to bring it into the world. As the child’s confidence grows, so does the idea itself. And then, one day, something amazing happens. This magical World Premiere, combining an orchestra with theatrical elements, explores the importance of creativity and imagination and how young people have the power to change the world.

The Pi e r rot P roj e ct Inspired by South Australia’s intriguing obsession with the character Pierrot Lunaire at the time of World War I, internationally acclaimed composer Paul Rissmann leads an innovative creative project with secondary school aged musicians. Over a week of collaborative creative workshops with Rissmann and ASO mentors, the students will re-imagine the extraordinary music of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella and Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin. In an exciting concert finale, a brand new work will be premiered by the student ensemble and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, performed on stage at Elder Hall.
The Pierrot Project forms part of a larger initiative funded by the Australian Research Council Linkage grant scheme and the State Library of South Australia. The ‘Beyond the Stage’ project, which is being conducted by the University of Adelaide, explores the performing arts in South Australia during the First World War.
With a commitment to nurturing SA’s emerging musicians, ASO will invite 4 Elder Conservatorium students to undertake training in workshop leadership as part of this project.

Just like Mozart before him, Carl Maria von Weber was inspired by a clarinet virtuoso of his time: Heinrich Baermann, who harnessed innovation to to take his instrument in an entinerly new direction. The ASO’s own Principal Clarinet, Dean Newcomb takes on this challenging work, full of charm and vitality.
Jacques Ibert composed his Hommage à Mozart to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the great composer’s birth. Filled with good cheer, and more than the occasional quote, this delightful work is replete with sparkling elegance.
On his way to fight at Gallipoli, the young Australian composer Frederick Septimus Kelly lost a close friend: poet Rupert Brooke. His musical response was deeply personal and achingly poignant; one can almost hear the quiet rustling of olive leaves that hade his friend’s grave.
Famed in his lifetime as a gifted composer, remarkable pianist and improviser beyond compare, Mozart is the quintessential example of a musical polymath. In this wonderfully varied program, the ASO is joined by a musician of similarly wideranging gifts. Australian composer and conductor Brett Dean, brings a deep understanding to the Austro-Germanic repertoire.

Bi g Re h e a r s a ls Our ever popular Big Rehearsals are back in 2018! The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra welcomes young music students into Grainger Studio for an exciting orchestral experience. Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Associate Conductor Benjamin Northey will rehearse students through a selection of repertoire while they sit right next to mentors from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. At the end of the day, there will be a special open rehearsal giving family and friends the opportunity to witness what has been achieved. Just like musicians in the ASO, students will receive practice parts only a few weeks prior to the rehearsal. This is a great introductory experience to the orchestra and is highly recommended for budding orchestral musicians.
