Learning Program 2015

Adelaide Symphony Orchestra 1

Vincent Ciccarello Managing Director Welcome Participation is at the heart of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s SA Power Networks Learning Program in 2015. Whether you’re a student or a teacher, a toddler or a retiree, in pre-school or a postgraduate – we’d like you to take an active part in the process of making and performing music with the ASO. Experiencing the ASO is as accessible as ever, with lower ticket prices, more diverse offerings and school holiday activities, thanks to the generous support of our partner SA Power Networks.

We continue to provide specialised career development opportunities with our Professional Pathways program, offering yet again the ASO Orchestral and Learning Traineeships and the popular Artist Insight Series. We invite you to join us in an inspiring year of music-making that promises to be educational and entertaining in equal measure.

Our free, new ASO Junior Jams give pre-school aged children the chance to sing and dance as they learn about the instruments of the orchestra. Older brothers and sisters needn’t miss out: there are also free ASO Jams for them at our cultural venue partners on North Terrace. In addition to the hugely popular Tigers and Teapots, in which primary school children perform as a choir with the ASO, we will also be bringing a brand new piece to schools in 2015: The Bush Concert, based on the beautiful Australian book by Helga Visser. Both of these programs come with learning resources as part of the Australian Curriculum for Music. The ASO is thrilled to present internationally-renowned music educator, Paul Rissmann, who will lead the inaugural ASO Festival of Learning & Participation in June. With performances and workshops for students and teachers, come and understand first-hand why Paul Rissmann is in demand globally. There is plenty of other family fare with concerts featuring Jay Laga’aia and world famous ‘clownductor’, Melvin Tix. There are many opportunities to see what goes on behind the scenes at the ASO, too, with Open Rehearsals for primary and secondary students featuring interviews with guest artists; and our special ABC Classic FM Keys to Music, presented by host Graham Abbott. Budding musicians have a number of opportunities to actually sit alongside members of the ASO in the Come & Play Mendelssohn rehearsal, as well as our Big and Little Rehearsals.

Two first symphonies are the subject of this Keys to Music, to be broadcast on ABC Classic FM. Graham Abbott will discuss how Haydn and Mozart tackled their first forays into the world of the symphony – at 27 and 8 respectively – before going on to compose literally dozens of others.

Ahead of the ASO’s semi-staged presentation with State Theatre Company of South Australia, Graham Abbott explores Mendelssohn’s sparkling incidental music to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Discover why this piece, written by a 17 year-old, has become a much-loved part of the musical canon.

“I want so much to be in the music, in the kind of spaces that the ASO, and their conductors create, and I know that to do this I need more than just a mountain of ambition, I need these kinds of insights that allow me to nourish my awareness of how these enormous and complex things called orchestras really work, and what sort of things I need to be looking out for so that I can step closer to the wonders of symphonic music.” Charles Klein, 2014 Professional Pathways student Following our inaugural Professional Pathways in 2014, we are delighted to further grow the program for 2015. Developed to offer young emerging artists and music educators a platform from which to explore and realise their own pathway into a career in music, this diverse program encompasses Big Rehearsals, Orchestral Traineeships, Learning Traineeship, and a year-long Artist Insight Series.

Building on the success of our Orchestral Traineeships in 2014, this specialised career development program aims to provide outstanding music performance students with a stepping stone towards professional life. Students will prepare for and carry out mock auditions, take part in rehearsals alongside ASO musicians, work within a chamber music context, and assist with various family and community activities throughout the year. Help support music education The 2015 SA Power Networks Learning Program is filled with new and exciting activities that support music in the classroom and are linked to the Australian Curriculum for the Arts where appropriate. The ASO has long believed in and promoted the benefits of music education, but we can do more. While this year’s learning program aims to reach over 10,000 young people, it is the many more will still miss out on experiencing, learning from and interacting with a live performance by ASO musicians. With your support the ASO could perform at more schools and reach more children. By donating to the ASO you can play your part in inspiring and developing our next generation of music lovers.
