by Dumisani Hlatswayo

Acommunity group had gathered to discuss issues that affect women. The meeting was held at Kanana Primary School Ward 80, on the 29th of May. According to the Chairperson of the ANCWL, Melody Sebenzile Hlatshwayo, they discussed a wide range of issues including GBV and how SA’s culture exacerbates it.
“We spoke about GBV, which has a lot of bad influence in our society. Next time when we meet again we need men as well, we can not focus on this topic and exclude them,” said Hlatshwayo
Another burning issue they touched is bullying. Hlatshwayo said a lot of local young women end up not completing school because they are victims of bullying. She said women with low self-esteem are more likely to become targets of bullying. “Bullies make fun of their differences, and this can cause one’s life. Self-confidence is one thing we lack mostly and yet powerful, and one ought to have it. It’s not ok to look at a sister as ugly just because you’re told or think you are beautiful, we are all beautiful but have different traits,” she explained.
“Our young women are being told that they are not enough simply because they are women. It’s high time we came together and be each other’s keepers,” she added.
Hlatshwayo pointed out that women should be empowered as they often have to provide for their children. “I believe that women should be empowered even more, as I believe that when you empower a woman you empower nations. We need sponsors to create projects like Project-employment. Those programs will equip our women and that in return will bring confidence and unity in our lives as women,” she said.
