Strengths and weaknesses of Deductive and Inductive grammar teaching Erlam (2003) defines the deductive method as a process that moves from general to specific. The learners are exposed to the general use, and they apply the rule to particular examples of language use. And this method ismost close with the Grammar–Translation approach (Gollin, 1998). This approach, according to Brinton, Celce– Murcia and Snow (2014) was used as a way to teach Latin and other languages. Using deductive reasoning to go over this case I found it difficult to come to just one logical conclusion with so many general statements by these suspects. I first took notes about the case; including and highlighting the differences in each suspect's story which I then used to formulate my theory. After carefully reviewing this case I feel that Melissa Baker is suspect number one in this case. Not only did Melissa act too calmly when she was giving her statements, a calmness that seems questionable for a widow whom has just found her husband murdered in their home. Melissa also makes general statements that seem like she has an issue with how much attention her husband John is giving to the football games during the season which can only be taken as jealousy. Melissa also stated that she saw "Joe" in the home before she left for the shopping trip, this statement is inconsistent with the other two suspects involved and their statements. Melissa stands to inherit the business that her husband John has left behind. Deductive: Deductive reasoning is a logical process in which a conclusion is based on the concordance of multiple premises that are generally assumed to be true. Deductive reasoning is sometimes referred to as top–down logic. Its counterpart, inductive reasoning, is sometimes referred to as bottom–up logic. Specifically, no hypotheses can be found at the initial stages of the research and the researcher is not sure about the type and nature of the research findings until the study is completed. Most thinkers argued that the things of nature could be understood by using human reason. This time period is when people began to question certain authorities. The problem with induction lies within its logical validity. In inductive reasoning, we make seemingly justified assumptions about future events based on past observations. The premises of our claim are assumed to be true; however, they do not guarantee the truth of the conclusion (135) Instead, induction uses the observable evidence as strength to infer the probability of the new claim being true. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character, Sherlock Holmes, once said "I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose." This quote can be found in A Study in Scarlet and relates to how Sherlock feels about knowledge. Sherlock even seems to use this to help him reason and understand the characteristics of people who cross paths with him. Both The Great Mouse Detective (GMD) and Sherlock Holmes (SH) use characteristics, from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories, but they are depicted and intertwined into the stories very differently.

In the movies The Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, deductive reasoning is the main tool used to solve cases. Sherlock Holmes, the lead detective in SH, uses deductive reasoning to decipher how the antagonist pulls off the illusions. Basil of Baker Street, the lead detective in GMD, uses deductive reasoning in a similar way to figure out the antagonist's evil scheme. While deductive reasoning is used in both films, Sherlock Holmes seems to use it more uniformly, as opposed to Basil who appears to use deductive reasoning more sporadically. Since all three had an adverse reaction to me, I used deductive reasoning. Being so easily rejected, they appeared to be physically put off by my asking them for coffee.
