Editor’s Notes Chikaylah Wellington - Managing Editor
It’s such an immense pleasure to be able to welcome you all to the first official edition of the Paper and Pixels magazine. Creating the first edition is such a disasterfully beautiful and intoxicatingly freeing experience. We wandered around in the dark unsure of where this journey would lead us but we started with our feet on solid ground, hands clasped and heads bound together, knowing we existed as part of a transcendental collective of visually masterful innovators. No one could’ve anticipated where this path would’ve taken us, or how the outcome would look. I know I speak for the whole team when I say I am immensely proud of this incredible group of creatives, guided by the ever inspiring Jess and Candice.
Step inside these pages and join us on this journey, as you learn about trends in the creative industries that keep us on our toes and our eyes fervently satisfied. Let yourself be inspired by works of our campus’ trend setting students and look into our mindfulness section to learn our secrets of running towards success without running out of gas on the way; plus you will find many more pages of fun and thought provoking content! With bags under our eyes and a little too much caffeine in our systems, we thank you for peering into these pages and enjoying our hard work.

Juliet’s Corner Welcome to Juliet’s corner, the home of the one and only receptionist here at Wellington’s Yoobee Campus. Here she speaks of the soulful truths of love and life. Author - Juliet Powley
Did you know that one in four Kiwis have experienced Anxiety or Depression? These feelings unfortunately don’t always go away, but there are various different ways of managing them. My coping method of choice is writing, it always has been and it always will be! Writing for me, makes me understand, process, and accept how I’m feeling - whether it’s good or bad. If I’m full of feelings you best believe there will always be a paper trail to follow.
Just seeing words and thoughts on paper, physically in front of you, can be a huge relief and a big part of acceptance and growth. It literally feels like transporting your brain onto paper and sometimes... that’s the best place for those thoughts to stay. I’m trying my best to be better at sharing these thoughts with others, it helps me feel supported and creative. I hope it helps those of you who also experience bad days.
Remember that bad feelings are always temporary! 9
A. She is here and I know it, and I was feeling so well! I’m stiffening with fear, it’s her I can smell. She lurks and she waits and I’m well aware, I’m only so tough; we all can get scared. I try to stand tall, I’m trying my best, but she is strong and determined and now she’s my guest. “This is my body!” I say, “it is not yours, why did you do this? I can feel your claws!” I feel myself shrinking, as she grows so tall, I’m trying so hard and I don’t want to fall. Your forceful and selfish, I hate you so much! I want you to leave, I don’t like this rush! “But I’m already here” she says in response, “I like it a lot so what have we got? You VS Me I’m right and your wrong so if you’re asking me, this is where I belong”. But I know she can’t last, I was here first. In light there is dark and so in reverse. “Temporary” I say, I just need to get free That is my weapon and I’ll use it wisely. I hold on tight and I wish it so true, because deep down I know, that I am not YOU.

Trends As a designer you will find yourself constantly surrounded by different styles and visual techniques. Throughout the chaos that is ‘the design world’, we have identified a few design trends in the last couple of months that are worth taking a moment to look at.
Metallic Foil Digital Design With silvers, golds and holographics to choose from; foil stamping communicates luxury at a glance. Create an extra layer of dimension within your designs by utilizing this elegant and refined technique.
Overdone Digital Design The smiley face. You’ve all seen it. Call me old fashioned but this humble little guy is everywhere from t-shirts to posters. Let’s make way for a new emotion to step on the scene.
Cozy Design Web & UX Say hello to warmer tones. Long gone are the days of stark RGB and white landing pages. Think beige and pastel tones. Cozy design makes UI feel that little bit softer.
Big Limb Illustration Film & Animation Illustrators you’re in for a treat. Free yourself from the confines of perfect symmetry and embrace the whimsical and quirky. Lose yourself in elongated curves and exaggerated features.
Battle Royale Game Development Whether you’re based in Antartica or living under a rock. Battle Royale has stolen the show. Maybe a little overexposed but thankful that the world has shone a wider spotlight on E-Sports community as a whole. 13
Rusty Cholos Meet Rusty Cholos, a trailblazer in art and one of Yoobee Wellington’s incredible illustrators. Author - Maria Rose
Q.
How did your journey at Yoobee start? How did you decide where you wanted to study?
A. Where did it start? It actually came from a huge breakdown for me. At the start of 2017 I was at a bad place. Family, friends, relationships, work. All that came crashing down. I kinda realised all of this is just happening in one go and I hit a brick wall - to the point I couldn’t push it anymore. I was weak, I was tired. I didn’t want to do anything. I was watching a Ted Talk with Kid Cudi. He said “You can do so much more than you realise, you just have to push yourself.” I went all in and said enough is enough, I need to set my goals. I had never even heard of Yoobee.
I thought I signed up to the media studies school on Dixon Street. But then I got an email from Sarah... I was like, okay so this must be a different campus or something... I went for my meeting and she asked me “do you have a portfolio?”
I didn’t have a portfolio. I trashed it because I didn’t like it. 15
Back then my former teacher, she literally looked at my portfolio and said “Is that it? Is that all you can provide for your final?” And I was like yeah... It kinda broke me. Broke my passion for art and drawing. Someone who is a teacher.. Who has a lot of knowledge comes up to me, as someone who wants to become an artist... It kind of breaks you apart... I didn’t draw again for the next four years.
Q. Your high school teacher? A. Yeah..I never looked at it as a career path anymore. I just looked at it as a hobby kind of thing. Like yeah, I can draw kind of thing... Until I went to Yoobee. And later on I started doing more art work for digital design. I became more confident, even doing film. Nate
I did level five film production and animation. And that opened my eyes. I was just astounded. asked me to do a little project reviewing music videos. Things like that are such a blessing to me because I never knew I had a talent for making music videos and that sort of thing.
I started putting it out my Instagram, even on Art Station and Facebook. And the start of this year that’s when everything hit. I put everything up. I wanna hear that “aww I can’t wait for the next issue of Rusty’s book”, or reading a forum with the audience’s theories on what’s coming next.. That’s what I’ve always dreamt of.
My biggest dream is to one day become a Manga Artist. Cos I’ve been self taught, and my friends from church taught me how to draw too. When I was younger I started drawing Dragon Ball-Z and Pokemon. And that’s howit became a thing.. Not realizing it, I had been drawing anime my whole life.
Q.
You have the right work ethic, I have no doubt that you’re gonna get there. Tell me about that work grind. You’re what I like to call of the “neverwanna-leave-heres”, you see them in the computer labs late at night doing their hustle. Tell me about that.

A. It was the Yoobee community that
there - at least this is my portfolio. For me, working as a freelancer, pushed me to get there. My goal was to just work hard and then get a dream can show them “this is what I do.” job. But I never told people what kind. Never really put it in depth. But ever since I came to Yoobee it went from animator, concept designer, film maker, working for Blizzard, working for Riot. Now my goal is to become Manga Artist. That’s how the grind came in. Once I pick a goal, I work on it. And if it doesn’t work out, at least I can say I tried and then put that on my shelf. And then I pick something else from that same shelf and work on that.
Q. So the evolution of that path, I wanna be this, I wanna do that. Every time you reached a point that it manifested into something else.. The different directions, can you talk about that?
A. It’s the same as listening to music, you love a song so much you play it until you get sick of it.. and then you let it go. It’s the same with me picking a goal. I wanna work hard until I get sick of it. And lately I haven’t got sick of my grind so I just keep going and going. Because of Yoobee as well, they helped me work on the fundamentals.
Q. Can you talk about what it’s like to open yourself up to that online community?
Getting likes is nothing to me anymore. As an artist, I want more than that. Q.
So what kind of things influence you? What inspires your artwork?
A
. Anime. Anime hugely. I’m a weeb, no worries about that. I love music, mainly K-pop and Japanese retro music and of course hip hop and reggae. Those are the biggest influences that allow me to create.
Q.
What would be your advice to someone who is fresh into Yoobee |and is tryna find their path. For instance, their not sure where their interests lie and their trying to figure that out.
A. If it’s something you wanna do.. Make sure you love it. Because if you do something that you don’t love. You won’t give it 100%.
A. I went from having that initial fear
If you love drawing and stuff.. Keep it. Don’t ever settle for less. from the beginning to then saying And social life —Social life can “f*ck it. I’m gonna put it out there for come after. Focus on your future. the world to see.I was just so scared of putting it out. The fearof not getting The future is what matters the most. enough likes clicked into me. But I had to think, I justneed to get it out 19
Q. So let’s talk about games, I love our gaming yarns. What kind of games have influenced your personal aesthetic?
A.
Assassin’s Creed. Definitely Assassin’s Creed. But the first game that actually influenced me with fight scenes was Tekken. Then it went on with COD, 2K (that’s what my friends play) Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Naruto Ninja Storm.
Q.
Atm I really feel like Battle Royale has taken the spotlight. What are your thoughts on that kind of game play?
A. It’s great, it gives you that adrenalin rush. The feel of winning.. For some people it’s not their cup of tea. I’ve noticed there are others who like to play story games, RPG.. but there are some who are quite competitive.. And things like that e.g Overwatch, Apex.. Fortnite..All those competitive games...they’re the ones that get your heart racing. I’ve broken a couple controllers.. I will admit.
Q.
Do you have any tips for those who are getting into gaming?
A.
Start off with just going in. Have confidence. At least think that you can carry. Just learn the game, get familiar with the game. That’s the number one thing. For Battle Royale you have to have eye coordination. There’s a play that I’ve noticed. Some gamers that improve on this by playing music games like guitar hero. These help you with your tracking skill (shooting wise) For me, I play those because it helps with play Battle Royale. Aiming will save my life.
You can build as much as you like. But if you can’t aim, You can’t do jack.

I’ve been developing my art for many years now, and it’s been a rollercoaster of a ride from drawing on the walls as a kid to doing art for companies, billboards, videogames and making a living for myself doing so! I chose Appa for this piece
because Avatar: The Last Airbender has an animation and character to it that has held up through the years and really left a lasting impact on me. I used clip studio paint for this piece.

International Women’s Day A conversation around being a women in design by four kickass women succeeding in design Author - Chikaylah Wellington
Left to Right: Felicity Donaldson, Jenny Adams, Charlotte Wooster, Candice Phelps
29
The overwhelming sentiment passed between the three women when asked about their journey through study to where they are now, was that in the creative industry there is no linear or singular path. For Felicity, her path to creating beautiful pieces of clay pottery came from finishing a degree at Dunedin and feeling unsatisfied from working in Fashion Marketing for 10 years. Her passion for pottery came from taking a weekly course in Auckland that gave her an insight into working with a new medium that allowed her creativity to flourish. Through her social media platform she was able to grow her brand until it became a full time endeavour that she loves.
Small steps of progress are still steps towards your end goal.
For Charlotte, she found that University life wasn’t for her by the time she reached her third year of her Bachelor of Design. Instead she stepped back and worked in hospitality which helped her pave her way towards her current position as a marketing manager. She quickly found herself as a leader in Wellington’sHospitality sphere, a position she never would have imagined for herself. The decision making process is a key part of any designers journey. Jenny had this to say about what she’s learnt. “The more information the better. If you’re not comfortable enough with the situation to make a call, do something about it! Get some more time, get some more information, get in touch with someone who will help you.” A key discussion point that came up regarding the topic of women’s rights and equality, is gender disparity within the workplace. With Charlotte’s history of working in event management she found that much of the hands on work was done by men due to the physically demanding aspect. “Within the arts, there are a lot of women, a lot of room for women, and a lot of growth for women. In that regard, it is quite balanced.” However, for Jenny working in tech, an industry which is known for
being predominantly male oriented, this sentiment wasn’t shared. “Change is happening but I would argue not enough and way too slow. Money talks; you can say all these nice things but if you don’t pay women properly, it doesn’t mean anything.” There is a demand for more diversity within workplaces, because diversity means for differing perspectives and is the drive for innovation. We cannot walk the same path and expect to reach a different destination, just as new outcomes cannot be reached with the same minds and processes. As final parting words, each women shared ideas and thoughts that helped them in their journey and to inspire those present. Don’t compare yourself to others, and as long as you have the initiative to learn and grow you are doing the right thing!
Within the arts, there a lot of women, a lot of room for women, and a lot of growth for women.

Adulting 101 Authors - Tyler Chard ( Chef ) & Maria Rose ( Not a Chef )
Meal Prep
Essentials
Reap the rewards of adulting by stepping up to the plate. Here are a few reasons that make meal prep worthwhile.
1. Wooden Chopping Board
Save Yourself Some Time Set aside one afternoon to get your weeks worth of cooking done and you’ll be surprised by how much extra time you have up your sleeve.
Avoid Temptation The commitment of having a ready made meal leaves you less likely to splurge. Buying snacks and take out because you don’t have food is equivalent to throwing your money down the drain.
Peace of Mind Take some pressure off yourself during assignment season and have some wholesome meals ready to go. Being able to wake up and grab a ready to eat meal straight from the fridge is a truly liberating feeling.
Less Food Waste You’re less likely to waste food by using all your ingredients. Kiss those sad and lonely vegetables at the bottom of the your fridge goodbye.
Wooden boards slip less, are environmentaly friendly and keep your knife sharp. Be sure to wash them thoroughly to avoid cross contamination.
2. Good Quality Knife You don’t need to own a draw full of knives, a single quality knife will do the job and last for years. Save yourself some trips to kmart; just don’t let your flatmates use it.
3. Cast Iron Skillet Enjoy the novelty of grill lines on your food and and as a bonus, impress tinder dates with your culinary prowess. Fifty to sixty bucks from Briscoes on special, you’ll never cook with anything else again.
4. Non Stick Pot & Wooden Spoon If you’re finding yourself burning rice and pasta often, invest in a non-stick pot and wooden spoon. The reason being, metal utensils scratch away the tefflon coating causing food to stick and burn. Plastic and metal utensils will also damage the quality of your rice and pasta .
5. Storage Containers Easy to stack 1L storage containers are the perfect size for meal prep. Portioned meals take up less space in the fridge than raw ingredients... Leaving you more room for cider. Win.

Tyler Andrews Meet Tyler Andrews, a Wellington based self-taught photographer who is paving his way into the emerging Hyperlapse domain. Author - Eric Hong
Andrews, having studied I.T. previously, found his passion for Photography, Video and Design two years ago in Christchurch whilst attending the local bar, “Smash Palace” whose social media presence was close to invisible, he offered to produce content to help promote upcoming gigs and found a new line of work within an emerging industry which we now see as the leading tool used for advertising.
This style of video production mainly gets used for event photography, which Andrews has been highly sort after; having done 121’s Warehouse Rave, Bay Dreams (Mt Maunganui) and Wellington’s own Homegrown, capturing artists such as Sticky Fingers, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Joey Bada$$ to name a few.
Andrews is currently on the process of finishing his degree in Design with focus in Media Design. His main line of work, outside of studying, is within Hyperlapse Photography -- timelapses that move, putting photography into an image sequence that then creates a video.
43
Andrews is a self-taught Hyperlapse Photographer, originally learning through Youtube tutorials which lead him to develop his own unique techniques that are suited to his style of capturing image and one day hopes to help others develop their skills with his own Youtube tutorials. After two years of doing Hyperlapse photography as a hobby, he has found his place within the Photography Sphere, deciding between Videography or Photography and found his passion for Post Production editing. He wishes to stay in Event videography/photography and later wishes to move intomore personal Hyperlapse videos, and is currently working on personal footage showcasing his take on Wellington City in straight Hyperlapse. During his busy work schedule balancing events, editing and uni, he has built a customized keyboard to suit his Post Production needs, a 10 keyless mechanical keyboard which has been built from scratch to match his personal editing style. (Shown in images on right page) He has built this keyboard pulling in his knowledge from I.T to build a keyboard that’ll allow Andrews’editing process to best suit his needs; minimising user errors and maximising efficiency.
All of his work is handheld using a lightweight Nikon and requires no tripod and his specialty lies within post stabilization.Andrew believes
Having top of the line equipment is great but knowing how to use what you have available to you is most important.
