Cartonnage

Accordion folder By: Carla Pimentel

This tutorial is designed to archive collections of scrapbooking paper 30”x30”. Can be adapted to other papers by modifying the dimensions of the chipboard and cardstock. I hope you enjoy. It’s very easy! 6 Paper and Cotton

Materials: -Gray chipboard 4mm: 2x 41x34cm and 1x 41x3cm -10 Cardstocks with 50x65 cm -2 Rolls of self adhesive fabric Panoah with 2 different patterns* -Satin ribbon 1m -Kraft adhesive paper tape -Double-sided adhesive tape -PVA glue -1 Roll of fabric tape -Bone folder and scoreboard *You can choose only one roll –one pattern-to line the covers and spine or choose binding paper.

1- Start by cutting one strip with 8 cm in the longest side of each of the 10 cardstocks.

2- Fold the cardstocks in half.

3- With the fold facing you, score both sides 1,5 cm from the edge.

4- Cut half of these ractangles on each side. Look at the image.

Paper and Cotton 7

5- Fold in half again. Apply glue to the side strips and glue them to the other half of the cardstock, above it, in order to obtain an “envelope, open on one side.

6- Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the remaining cardstock.

7- Cut 9 strips of fabric tape with 32,5 cm. Join the envelopes two by two at the open edge, until you get an accordion folder with 10 cardstocks.

8- Join the two parts of the cover to the spine with Kraft tape. Cut 2 rectangles of Panoah with 35x47 cm to line the cover and 1 rectangle with 10x47 cm of the other Panoah chosen for the spine.

9-Detach the adhesive paper and line the covers with fabric. Start at about 2 cm from the spine. Flatten well with the help of bone folder, so as to leave no air bubbles or pleats.

10- Now glue the fabric on the spine. Overlap 1,5cm of the fabric cover.

8 Paper and Cotton

11- Divide the satin ribbon in half and glue it on the inside of the cover, centered, with double-sided adhesive tape.

12- Glue the accordion folder to the cover on one side and the other.

It is ready to use your accordion folder for your paper collections.

Panoah are self adhesive fabrics made of cotton, suede, satin, leather, linen, silk, etc, that can be easily applied to any smooth surface such as walls, wood, paper, cardboard, plastic, etc. Are sold in rolls. Paper and Cotton 9

Creative Creations

By:

I

’m super-excited that Carla asked me to contribute to this issue of the Paper and Cotton Magazine. I hope you will enjoy my tutorial and I would also like to take this opportunity to let you take a little glimpse into my creative world ...

Who am I and what am I doing? My Name is Andrea Gomoll, I’m 32 years old and I’m from a small town near Berlin / Germany. I studied Media Design for Digital and Print Media, then worked in an Advertising Agency in Berlin for a couple of years before I started my own Photography Business / Studio in 2009. I’m mostly shooting weddings and doing maternity

Andrea Gomoll

and newborn-shootings in my Studio - and I really love my job. I think photographs are such an important thing and I’m thrilled I can do what I love for a living. Another thing I did and I truly loved was publishing the first german Scrapbooking Magazine - Scrap Art Zine - for 5 years. But the time came where I had to re-focus and set priorities - where I had to decide which road to take for the future since they day only has 24 hours - so after 5 years I quit the Magazine to concentrate on my Photography business and to be able to open myself up for new artsy adventures ... I was interested in Art, Design & different Crafts for as long as I can remember and I guess I can

Paper and Cotton 11

say there’s almost nothing in the craft sector that I haven’t at least tried ... some things I only tried once or twice to find out that it’s not “my thing” - but what I kept loving for years and I think forever will is getting my fingers all messy with Ink and Paint. So my main focus lies on Artjournaling and Mixed Media, mixed with lots of painting and drawing - I also love to create altered Art (altering books, old cameras, Vintage things etc.) and I’m also into Scrapbooking and Smashbooks. Besides creating in many ways I enjoy just spending time with my super-supportive (and also very creative) fiancé Thomas and with our 3 crazy cats, I love to read a good book whenever I find the time and we also enjoy Geocaching a lot, since it brings us out into nature which is always a good way to clear your mind and it’s even better in combination with hunting for little treasures!

What inspires me? I draw lots of Inspiration from everyday life - I love flipping through Magazines - I look at advertisements - I look at greetingscards in the store - I look at bookcovers - I love to discover Design- and Layout-Ideas and fun color combinations I want to try out. What also inspires me a lot are our sunday-strolls

12 Paper and Cotton

over Fleamarkets - and there are many really cool Fleamarkets in Berlin - I just love looking through old, vintage stuff - old photographs, old collections of magazines and ephemera, old books - old and vintage stuff really inspires me a lot and always gets me in the mood for art. I also discover lots of fun things at Fleamarkets like old stencils, old music sheets, old maps etc. which I love to incorporate into my art and I love to find old things to alter. Nothings screams “alter me” more than an old vintage camera, an old vintage box or an old vintage clock ... I just love to give a new life to those old objects long forgotten. And last but not least - another thing that really inspires me are supplies ... looking at and sorting through my paints, brushes, markers, embellishments, papers etc. always gets me in the mood to create and sometimes when I lack inspiration I just go through my stash of supplies, grab a couple of papers and colors that speak to me and just jump in and start without thinking of a final project I want to create - that always works miracles. Another thing that inspires me is receiving other people’s art in the mail. I love to trade Artist Trading Cards and handmade postcards with other artists worldwide - it’s always superinspiring and exciting to open up some mail and to find a beautiful piece of unique art inside.

I love this hybrid way of working - combining physical art with digital art - because it gives me the best of both “worlds”. My favourite supplies and techniques To be honest, I LOVE all my supplies and it’s hard for me to pick favourite supplies and favourite techniques, since my preferences change like the seasons. I’m a typical Gemini - always on the lookout for something new ; I usually enjoy one technique or some supplies most for a couple of weeks, then re-discover some other supplies and techniques and especially enjoy to work with them for another couple of weeks before it changes again ...! This keeps me inspired and helps to always create fresh art. Yet - right now - I especially enjoy working with PanPastels and Copics when it comes to drawing and coloring, I love to create Hybrid Project with those Drawings (which means I mix “getting my hands dirty” with some digital artwork / digital finishing afterwards). I love to add digital layers to my hand-drawn / hand painted projects in Photoshop - then maybe print the pieces out and incorporate them into a physical piece of Mixed Media again - for example a canvas or into my Artjournal . Other supplies I LOVE to work with / I wouldn’t wanna miss are my my Faber Castell Gelatos - I use them in almost any of my projects - also the Faber Castell Big Brush Pens which are great for shading. I love my white Sharpie Paint Marker for putting highlights - I buy them in lots of 12 because I’m

Paper and Cotton 13

using them that much ... I love working with stencils and Texture Paste since I’m a person who really loves texture in my projects a lot. The list could go on and on and on ... and if you would ask me again in 2 months you might already get a whole different answer ...

Sharing and Teaching Art Another thing I love besides just making art is sharing my Art and sharing my process with others. It all started with my YouTube Videos - I love taping my creative process, then sharing the videos with others and there’s nothing which makes me happier than to hear that I could inspire somebody with my art. Makes me happy and grateful. So my YouTube Channel grew and grew over the past 2 Years and as of today you can find more than 150 free Art-Videos on my Channel (Cre8tive Cre8tions by Andrea Gomoll) with new videos added on a regular Base. Feel free to subscribe to my Channel to receive notification about new uploaded videos. One thing came to another and I had people asking again and again about Online Classes, teaching them some techniques in more detail, so last year I just jumped right in and created my first Online-Class, which was centered on Mixed Media and creating Faces - I called it FACEcinating Girls - and it became a huge

14 Paper and Cotton

success - more than I ever could have imagined. When I planned my Online-Classes I wanted to do something different, not just “another online class” - so I came up with the idea to design some exclusive stamp-sets which go with my Online-Classes. I designed some Facial Features Clearstamps, which make it easier - especially for beginners to learn and practice building and drawing faces for Artjournaling and Mixed Media. Another Class followed - the FACEcinating Girls Volume 2 - which also comes with 2 sets of clearstamps which is all about turned faces, and there are also 2 AddOn Classes - the Summer & the Winter AddOn - where I walk you through some seasonal projects. All my Classes are still available - you can sign up any time, will receive immediate access to all video content and

they also include the Clearstamps and shipping worldwide. Also all class content is downloadable, so you can keep the Video Tutorials forever and learn and practice at your own pace whenever you have the time. Also sharing your work with me during the Online-Class is very important I think, so you can share your work in a private group with me and other students and receive some cheer or constructive criticism if you ask for it. I think that’s an important part of improving. If you’re not so much into drawing / creating Faces, my brandnew Online-Class artJOURNEYling might be for you, since this Online Class isn’t focused on Faces but on Artjournaling and Mixed Media Techniques in general. We’ll play with many different Supplies and Media in this Online-Class and learn many different techniques, all while creating a unique ArtJournal with 14 different projects inspired by different countries and cultures - hence the name artJOURNEYling. I would be thrilled if you’d join me on this artJOURNEY!

Challenges to inspire others If you follow me and my creative adventures on Instagram and/or Facebook or on my Blog, you might have stumbled upon my Dailybookpage Sketches already. That’s a Challenge I created for myself for 2014 - creating a sketch / a quick image on a bookpage every day. Just 5-10 minutes each day to keep my creative juices flowing, to try out and sketch out new ideas or simply to practice. By the end of the year I will bind all of those bookpages and then have a nice Inspirational Folder with many ideas sketched out to use for future reference and to incorporate into future projects. There are already a couple of people joining me in this adventure, sharing their Bookpage-Sketches using the Hashtag#dailybookpagesketch – so if you’d like to jump in and join me feel free to do so! Also - one thing - there’s of course no need to do a sketch every day. Pressure really kills creativity - so allow yourself to skip days - don’t feel “behind” or try to “catch up” and don’t push yourself to hard. Just create whenever you have the time and it will continue to be fun. That said - I think that’s a good sentence to finish ... always always ALWAYS make the time you spend creating a treasured time, a fun time, enjoy whatever you do and be happy with whatever you create.

Mixed Media Art

Life is Joy By: Andrea Gomoll

I’m happy to share with you a project, using my favourite technique for Mixed Media projects right now - creating Texture with Powertex Textile Hardener and adding lots of Sparkle and Glam to your Projects with Inka Gold & Maya Gold. The fun thing is, you can incorporate this technique / those media into almost every kind of Mixed Media project and the results are really amazing. You can either follow those step-by-step-instructions here or you could also watch the detailed Video-Tutorial I made for you to see me create this project from start to finish. 18 Paper and Cotton

Materials

• 12 x 12 Canvas • Distress Paints of your Choice • Water in a Spritzer Bottle • Paper (for example Vintage Music Sheets or old bookpages) • Regular Gel Medium • a foam Brush • a Pencil • Pan Pastels & Soft Tools • a Scanner / a Printer • Scissors • Powertex Textile Hardener (or any other brand)

• Pigment Powder (could also use Acrylic Paint as a substitute) • Some Fabric (Mull / Cotton / Mullberry Fibers - what you have on hand) • Inka Gold / Maya Gold • Distress Stain

You can find the Video-Tutorials here: Part 1: http://youtu.be/ydQj1nz1X9A Part 2: http://youtu.be/tcIF5IR4iUg

1) Dab some Distress Paints in colors of your choice onto the Canvas, then quickly spray the whole Canvas with lots of water to activate the Distress Paints and get them to float around and blend on your Canvas. When you’re satisfied with the results let it dry (or use a heat gun to speed up the drying process). 2) Adhere some old Papers (bookpages or music sheets) to your Canvas with Geld Medium - a foam brush works for applying the Gel Medium. Press down with your fingers and make sure you don’t have any air bubbles or bubbles of Gel Medium left underneath the paper. Let dry.

3) Dab some more Distress Paint onto the Canvas, spray some water again - if you like the effect you can add the paint to the top of the Canvas, spray some water and let the colors run down across the Canvas. Also use some Distress Paint to add Splatters of Paint to the Background. Put the Canvas aside to let it dry. 4) Draw a girl (or any other motif of your choice) onto paper using a pencil - you could use a paper of your choice depending on the Medium you’re going to color it with - if you use PanPastels like me a paper with a smooth surface works best). Paper and Cotton 19

5) Color the Image with PanPastels, carefully applying the Pastels with your soft tool - pick different shades of one color and mix them on the paper to create nice shading-effects. If you don’t have PanPastels or don’t like working with them you could color your Image with a different Medium of your choice - like Watercolor, Acrylics, Copics etc. 6) Once you’re done coloring your Image scan the Image (if you don’t have a Scanner you could also photograph the Image - make sure if you photograph it to shoot it straight from the front to avoid any disortions of the proportions). Then load into your Image editing software (Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or a free Software like Gimp) - make adjustments in color if needed (I always like to bring in a little more contrast - especially if you’re working with a light medium like Pastels). Then print the Image to use it on your Canvas (this step of scanning / printing is optional - you could use the original image right away but some Medias (like the PanPastels) would not work very well when using the original piece because the colors would smear when covering it with gel medium in the next step.)

7) Cut out the Image. 8) Apply it to your Canvas (make sure the background is completely dry) with Gel Medium. Again make sure there are no bubbles underneath the image - especially in the face that’s looking a little “odd”. 20 Paper and Cotton

9) Now you will need the Fabric Hardener, some Color Pigments and your fabric. Pour some of the Fabric Hardener into a bowl, mix with Color Pigments (or Acrylic Paint) of your choice and soak the fabric with the Hardener Medium. Then layer the wet fabric onto the Canvas, press it down firmly and wrap it around the corners of the Canvas. Keep on layering fabric onto the Canvas until you like the look. The more wrinkles you leave in the fabric the more dimension and texture you will get, so make sure not the flatten out the fabric completely but leave some “bulky” areas as well for a fun effect. Once you’re done let it dry - this will take 2-3 hours to air-dry before you can go on. 10) Once the fabric is dry you can add more Distress Paints if you like to bring in some more color. Again dab the Paint onto the Canvas, then activate with some water and let it run across the Canvas.

11) Now you will need your Inka Gold & Maya Gold. Those two Mediums will add a real wow-effect and lots of glam and shine to your project. The Inka Gold had a creamy consistency, so you would want to apply it with your fingers and rub it into the texture of the Canvas until you like the effect. The Maya Gold is more liquid, you might want to use this with a brush and apply it to some areas or add splatters of the paint with your brush to the Canvas. You can also add some water to the Maya Gold so that it’s really liquid and then create drops of Paint to let them run across your Canvas. Set the Canvas aside to let everything dry.

Paper and Cotton 21

12) Next I have printed a quote and a vintage butterfly graphic (tip: google the Internet for vintage graphics and many free to use Images will pop up which you could use in your personal artwork). I’ve cut it out (the text into stripes) and then colored the text stripes with some Distress Stain and a glaze of Maya Gold to match the Canvas in color. I have also added a glaze of color to the butterfly Image so the colors match the project better. 13) Last but not least apply the text stripes and the butterfly image to your Canvas using Gel Medium. If you want the butterfly (or the graphic of your choice) to pop up from the Canvas make sure you only adhere it in some areas so once it’s dry you can bend the butterfly wings upwards so it looks more real like the butterfly just landed on the Canvas.

If you create a project using this technique or following this tutorial please share your work with us for a chance to win one of two spots in my ArtJOURNEYling Online-Class Read the instructions on the page 17

That is it - an easy technique which creates a really great effect - the possibilities are almost endless with using different colors, themes, different sorts of fabric etc. Play and have fun! I hope you enjoyed this Tutorial and that I could inspire you! 22 Paper and Cotton

Rice and lavender heating pad

By: Carla Pimentel

This pad is easy to make and very useful to relieve muscle aches, mainly backache and the sporadic stiff neck with which sometimes we wake up.

40 Paper and Cotton

Materials -2 rectangles of fabric 60x15 cm* -Sewing threads -5 cups of rice -1 cup of dried lavender (or drops of lavender essence instead) -Scissors, rotary cutter -Ruler -Fabric pen or pencil -Small plastic funnel *increase about 1 cm all around for seam

1 - Pin right sides of the rectangles together. Sew all around.

2 - Leave an opening of about 5 cm on one short end.

3 - Zig zag the raw edges and cut diagonally across all 4 corners.

4 - Turn it right side out and press it.

Paper and Cotton 41

5 - Mix rice with lavender together.

6 - With the ruler and the fabric pen divide the pad into 6 sections, with 10cm each (the 6 rice compartments).

7 - Fill the first compartment with rice, with the help of a plastic funnel. Hold the pad up vertically so the rice falls to the first compartment. Pin through both fabrics along the line you draw and sew. Repeat for the next 5 compartments.

8 - After the last compartment is filled with rice, hand sew the opening with a tightly stitch. You finished!

Cooking

Cake of watercress and olive oil By: Teresa Rebelo for Lume Brando

For many years I was thinking about make this cake. I remembered the sweet taste and mild aftertaste of watercress, but could not remember the color was so intense. It is even a curious experience, the moment you open the cake and find out its live green interior. A beautiful cake outside and truly beautiful inside.

46 Paper and Cotton

Ingredients: -4 eggs -150 g watercress (1 pack) -140 ml extra virgin olive oil -* 2 cups brown sugar poorly filled -* 2 cups flour -1 teaspoon baking powder -Powdered sugar (optional) *250 ml capacity

Preheat the oven to 180 ยบ. Grease with butter a baking pan and sprinkle with flour. In a kitchen robot or food processor, mix the watercress with the egg yolks and olive oil. Add sugar and beat some more. Transfer to a large bowl and add the flour and baking powder. Whisk the egg whites and add to the previous mixture. Bake for 50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean from the inside. Remove, wait a few minutes and carefully unmold. Allow to cool and, before serving, sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Cooking

Little boxes of bread By: Teresa Rebelo for Lume Brando

There is always a question in the middle of Sunday afternoon, which broke with the idyllic setting of a deadline on the couch without pots or stove: “Mother, what will be the dinner?” These boxes of bread are often the answer to the starving question. The filling will vary depending on what’s in the fridge and are always a hit.

48 Paper and Cotton

Ingredients: Serves 4, as light meal -8 slices of bread (I used whole wheat loaf, full of seeds) -8 cherry tomatoes -8 quail eggs -4 slices of ham or 2 sausages cut into small pieces -1 cup of tomato sauce -1 cup of grated cheese -black pepper -Basil leaves to decorate

Coat with butter eight cups of a muffin tray and sprinkle with flour . Preheat oven to 200 ยบ C. Flat slices of bread with a rolling pin, one by one, to make them thinner. Trim the crust with a knife (look better without the crust ), and insert a slice in each cup of the coated pan, shaping it as if you were coating a base line of pie. Now fill the boxes: a layer of cheese, a layer of tomato sauce , bits of ham or sausage, one halved cherry tomato, another layer of cheese . Do not overfill the boxes, they will still take the quail egg . Bake about 12 minutes in the middle position of the oven. Removefrom the oven, place one quail egg in each box, sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper, now place in a higher position and bake about 5 minutes or until the eggs are in point . Do not cook the eggs too much, it is delicious with the yolk still liquid . Garnish with basil leaves and serve with salad .

Health

Diabetes Mellitus Type1 Stir to fight it By: Susana Lopes, Susana Gama de Sousa Appointment of Endocrinology, Pediatrics Department, Centro Hospitalar do Médio Ave

Diabetes Mellitus affects more than 371 million people worldwide, accounting for 8.3% of the world population. It is estimated that diabetes type 1 affects approximately 3,000 children and youth in Portugal. The treatment of Diabetes Mellitus type 1 is based on three fundamental pillars: insulin, healthy eating and exercise. Thus all diabetic children and adolescents can and should practice regular physical exercise, with beneficts for their physical and psychological well-being. Within the beneficts of physical exercise for diabetes stand out: uImprovement of insulin sensivity – exercise helps the body to respond to insulin present in the blood, making more efficient the transport of blood glucose (sugar) into the cells; uReduction of the levels of blood glucose – exercise improves glycemic control in diabetic patients; uPrevention of other cardiovascular risk factors

– physical exercise helps in losing/maintaining weight, reduces arterial blood tension and improves cholesterol levels; uImprovement of psychological well-being (lower levels of stress) and social integration. Well controlled diabetic patients can practice any type of physical exercise, from participation in physical education classes to the practice of high competition sports. Should always be preferred aerobic physical activity (walking, running, cycling) ideally through participation in team sports, which allow a better integration into the group of friends, as well as developing a greater spirit of solidarity and teamwork. The physical education teachers and coaches should know that the child or adolescent is diabetic, and how to act before any complications. After diagnosis, the resumption

50 Paper and Cotton

of physical activity and precautions to take should be discussed with the doctor and nurse accompanying the patient in consultation. Initially, the patient should know how his body and his blood glucose levels react to physical exercise, through regular and systematic recording of blood glucose levels, before, during and after exercise, insulin doses administered and carbohydrates ingested. Knowing how the body reacts, it becomes easier to make a therapeutic plan for each individual patient. Precautions and recommendations related to exercise are related to three main situations: hypoglycemia (too low blood glucose), hyperglycemia (too high blood glucose) and dehydration. Hypoglycemia is the most common problem associated with physical exercise in diabetic patients and can occur during, immediately after or several hours after the practice of physical exercise. In most cases are mild to moderate situations, but must be recognized and treated immediately. To avoid this, diabetic patients should not perform physical exercise in following the insulin delivery time, nor when the last meal occurred more than 3 hours.

piece of fruit, yogurt, etc.) to ensure that glucose levels remain stable. Despite being a less frequent situation, hyperglycemia may arise during or after physical exercise, especially when diabetes is poorly controlled and the child or teen already has too high values before exercise or when exercises of short duration and high intensity are performed. Another common cause of hyperglycemia is exaggerated intake of carbohydrate after exercise, related to fear of hypoglycemia. During the practice of physical exercise, adequate hydration is critical, especially in diabetics who are susceptible to dehydration. Children and adolescents should drink water or other beverages, also not sweetened, before, during and after exercise, especially if they practice activities in hot and / or humid environments.

Before the first symptoms of hypoglycemia (tremors, sweating, pallor, palpitations), the exercise should be suspended and child or teenager must eat one or two packages of sugar. Then should eat a snack (bread, crackers,

IN SUMMARY - Exercise is beneficial for the health of diabetic patients and is strong advised. Should opt for aerobic and collective physical exercises and especially those pleased to the child or adolescent. - Professionals responsible for physical activity should know that the child or adolescent is diabetic and how to act in the face of hypoglycemia. - At an early stage is essential to know the response of the children and adolescents to exercise, allowing to create an individual plan tailored to each situation. - Hypoglycemias are the most common problem, but usually mild to moderate. The fulfillment of individual plan discussed with the patient’s doctor and nurse with respect to the intake of carbohydrates and insulin dose, before and after the exercise, means that this will be even less frequent.

Carmo church

Porto, a city classified by UNESCO as

World Heritage Site (1996) is a beautiful city full of architectural wonders. It’s about one in particular that I wish to speak on this article: its tiles adorning many of the façades of the city, monumental works that is worth watch and photograph. I’ll start my tour by the Carmo Church located in Carmo Street (Rua do Carmo), on the corner between Lions Square (Praça dos Leões) and Carlos Alberto Square (Praça Carlos Alberto). It was built by the monks of the Third Order between 1756 and 1768 with a Baroque Rococo style and in its lateral façade we can contemplate a vast panel of tiles (dated 1912) representing scenes alluding to the foundation of the Carmelite Order and the Mount Carmel, designed by Silvestro Silvestri and painted by master Carlos Branco in Vila Nova de Gaia.

S. Benedict train station

Down the Clérigos street to Porto´s downtown we face with the Santo António dos Congregados Church in Almeida Garrett Square (Praça Almeida Garrett). The tiles on its façade are by Jorge Colaço and represent scenes from the life of St. Anthony to whom the church is dedicated. Practically next door to this church we find the S. Benedict train station (Estação de S. Bento) built in the early twentieth century on the site where formerly stood the Convent of S. Benedict of Hail Mary. The atrium of this station has walls covered with 20,000 tiles also authored by Jorge Colaço (the same author of those of the Congregados church), illustrating the evolution of transportation, scenes from history (like the marriage of King John I to Queen Filipa of Lancaster, the family of Egas

The U.S. magazine Travel and Leisure in August 2011 included the S. Benedict station among 16 most beautiful in the world and this rating is well deserved.

Porto Cathedral

Moniz in front of the king of Castile) and from the life of the Portuguese (as the arrival of the 1st train to Minho). A few hundred meters further we arrived at Porto Cathedral, a monument with a mixture of Gothic and Baroque architecture. The Gothic cloisters have 7 panels of tiles from Valentim de Almeida and have been painted between 1729 and 1731 and depict scenes of excerpts from the Song of Solomon, the mythic dialogue between God and the Virgin Mary, patron saint of the cathedral. Going up the downtown Porto until its busiest street, St. Catherine Street (Rua de Santa Catarina), on the corner with Fernandes Tomรกs Street (Rua Fernandes Tomรกs), we find the Chapel of Souls. Its entire front faรงade and side is covered with tiles designed by Eduardo Leite (1929). In these tiles are represented the death of St Francis and Scenes from the

The Pearl of Bolhão

Life of St. Catherine. But not only in churches or at S. Benedict station we can find “pearls” of beautiful tiles ... in Formosa Street (Rua Formosa) there is a grocery store of its name “The Pearl of Bolhão” which has a tiled façade lined with colorful tiles with reference to the products it sells. Also some houses in downtown Porto have them. Others still adorn the signs of street names.

Ribeira Negra Panel (Black Stream)

“There is a brutality in this painting, let us say without any hesitation; brutality that is to oblige us relentlessly to think that Man is the most deadly animal, that his body does not cease to be corroded by leprosy time, the splendor of his youth becomes easily the most grotesque parody of himself, that everything in him is inexorably doomed to death.”. Eugénio de Andrade

There are many existing panels in homes and churches not mentioned and that I leave to the reader the care of their discovery, through a visit to the Most Noble City of Porto, but I can’t finish without mentioning the latest and most modern of all panels, decorating the exit of the tunnel until the beginning of Ribeira crossing the lower deck of the bridge king D. Luis I. This is called Ribeira Negra panel (Black Stream panel), it is 40 meters long and 3 meters tall and was donated to the chamber of Porto in 1984 by Julio Resende, a renowned painter of this city.
