Transfer images to canvas,wood or fabric By Carla Pimentel
I
’m sure you’ve seen on photographic supplies stores, canvas with photos or these applied in handbags, purses, pillows and other accessories. Also you might have noticed some pillows or decorative canvas in the home decor stores, with some really cute images! But ... what about the price? The price is not always very appealing, especially of the custom articles in the photographic stores. Ever occurred to you that you can do the same thing at home? Create your own canvas, boxes or decorative items, with exclusive models? That’s what I pretend to talk about, in this tutorial. If you research a bit on the internet, you will find that there are several methods of transferring images. Some are simpler or cheaper than others, but the most important is that some methods result better on canvas, others on fabric and others on wood, so for each object in addition to varying the method, you have to diversify the materials in order to make the transfer of images. But there is a product, its name TAP, Transfer Artist Paper, created by Lesley Riley, which has some advantages over the others: it is easy to use, suitable to transfer any type of surface and the method is the same for all.
The disadvantages are that it is not cheap, but yealds a lot if well harnessed, and it is not available for sale in Portugal, but you can do like me, order it via the internet from UK sellers, and in a week comes to your home! Each TAP pack has 5 sheets of A4 size (11 “x 8.5”). One side of each sheet is white – the one where you’ll print the images with an inkjet printer. The other side of the paper is pink. It doesn’t result if you use a laser jet printer!

The first thing to do is find pictures on the web, or choose your own images and distribute them on your sheet of A4 paper, with a program (I chose the Power Point). Choose which size each image will have and try to make the most out of available space in each sheet. There are free sites of images – as for example www.graphicfairie.com, or you can purchase some in an etsy shop. Obviously you can use your own pictures or drawings. If you prefer, you can draw directly on paper, on the white surface. Once images are selected print them on the white side of each sheet. Cut out the image you want to apply as close to its limit, turn it over the surface where you will apply,

and then iron the paper. The iron must be at a very high temperature with steam off. Lift the paper on one end and make sure the image was transferred as intended. If necessary, pass the iron a little more. My experience has shown me that the surface with the best results is the fabric, then the canvas and then wood. In the photos you can see examples of my work with this technique: shoe bags in linen, scented bags to the wardrobe, a small canvas that will decorate my craft room and even a wooden box, this one with a sequence of images of the entire process in the following pages. I hope you enjoy and try to do. It’s addictive!!!

1 1 - Sand the surface of the box with a fine sandpaper and remove the metal hinges. 10 Paper and Cotton

3 - Apply Pasta Flex (Daiara) in the edges of the box. It can be substituted by white wax from a candle.
4 - Paint the box again with two coats of white acrylic paint or if you prefer an off-white, use what I used: Storm Cloud of Docrafts.
5 - Lightly sand the entire surface, but give particular attention at the edges where the wax was applied, to get this distress effect - the gray color of the initial layer will appear.
6 - Choose the picture you want to apply. If you want it to be in a certain position, or if it has letters do not forget to print reversed. Cut the image near the limits.
7 - Replace the image over the lid of the box and iron with steam off, at an elevated temperature. Verify that the transfer is complete and remove the paper.
8 - Finish with a layer of protective varnish all the way around the box and over the image. Replace the metal hinges.

1 - Cut first in black cardstock, in this case with texture, the candy box. I folded and glued.
2 - I used a Sizzix die to cut the packaging.
3 -The die is Bag, Caddy 657 123 from Eileen Hull. To this project I used one of the last collections of Halloween that I liked most.
4 - I cut a rectangle slightly smaller so as to keep a small margin. I thought in this case that would bring out more of the images used. Since I haven’t the paper distresser, I decided to do it with my own hand!

6 - and glued this rectangle on the front panel of this pack.

7 - I looked in my EXTENSIVE collection of stamps by a creature that matched the characters in this collection of paper of My Minds Eye.
8 - And found!
9 - I cut out the image with a small margin. Wanted then apply a message in this work but because I had nothing that would fit here, I decided to write.
10 - So I went to get one of the first sets of stamps I bought. An alphabet ... I cut a strip of black cardstock to which I took off a small triangle and thus did a flag. Also wanted to give the effect of “chalkboard� and I ended up finding that also matched the theme ...
11 - In one of the bits of paper left over from this collection (and I keep all!) I cut one of the friendliest creatures and applied with 3D pads over the flag on the front panel.
12 - On the flag and the whole packaging, I did one of the things I like to do most, which is draw these small lines with white gel pen. Stuff with three candys.

-Canvas with 30x30 cm -Several pattern papers -Foam brush and a brayer -Mode Podge Gloss -Gel medium matte -Acrylic paint blue, white and pine green -Spray ink Dylusion cutt grass -Stamps and stamp pad -Glitter strukturgel from Marabu -Ornamental Snow-Tex from DecoArt -Paint rojo fuego 3D Acrilex -Faber Castell Pitt pens, different colours -Stencil #922146 Prima & TCW1645s -Old book sheets -Buttons; plastic star; pine tree bark
Cut out pieces of scrapbooking paper and glue them randomly to cover the canvas surface by applying a layer of gel medium matte under the paper and another over them. Mix blue acrylic paint with white paint, both dilute and cover the papers, especially in the union of them with the aid of the brayer.
With a stencil with snowflakes and other with dots, apply Glitter strukturgel with a foam brush in several places around the canvas. Let the center of the canvas free. In the right picture you can see better the aspect of snowflakes and dots after applying the texture paste.

Stamp snowflakes between those you did with the stencil around the entire canvas, including the sides and apply on them a little Glitter strukturgel to shine. Place sheets of an old book in a box of shoes and spray them with green acrylic paint. Use two different colors (I used green pine acrylic paint and dylusion cutt grass diluted in water). Leave parts of the sheets unpainted.
Cut out the painted pages into strips about 1 cm wide and mash them as you see in the image. Draw a triangle with a pencil on the canvas, where you will position the tree.

With Mode Podge Gloss glue the scraps of paper on the area of the triangle, up against each other and cover each piece with Mode Podge again, to shine. When the triangle is almost totally filled, glue the pine tree bark to make the trunk and finish filling with bits of paper. Cover the trunk with a thin layer of Mode Podge.
Cut out rectangles of paper and pictures of toys and distribute them at the base of the tree to simulate gifts. Glue a star at the top of the tree.

With 3D red paint decorate the tree and make bows in some of the gifts. Use Faber Castell Pitt pens to shade around the gifts and create dimension.
Apply snow Ornamental Snow-Tex on the bottom, over the gifts and a bit around the canvas for framing. Decorate some gifts with buttons and also apply a bit of snow on the tree. It’s done! Make your version and show us how became on our facebook page!

1- You need 6 sheets of paper with 12”x12”, from 3 different patterns. Cut them in order to obtain 6 rectangles with 12”x4” of 1st pattern; 6 with 10”x4” of 2nd pattern; 6 with 8”x4” of 3rd pattern. Score and fold each one in half.
2- In 3 of the smaller rectangles cut the central part with a die of your choice. I used framelit Sizzix Labels, 658693.
3- Apply liquid glue to the side edges of each rectangle and glue them to each other, overlapping to the largest, the one with medium size and finally the smaller one.
4- You’re going to end up with 6 sets of these, glued only at the ends of paper.
5- Fold each set half and glue the set to the following, applying glue to the back of half of the larger rectangles, in order to obtain a book.
6- You’re going to get a book in the shape of a star. Do not forget that 2 ends must be free to be glued to the covers. Paper and Cotton 23
7- Cut 2 rectangles of chipboard with 6”x4” to make covers. In one side glue scrapbooking paper of your choice.
8- In the side without paper, apply in the middle double sided tape.
9- Over the tape, glue a piece of ribbon crossing both chipboards. Let enough length of each side to make a loop and between the two covers leave a space of about 1/2” only with ribbon.
10- Glue inside the covers the book you have built. Do not forget to check that the opening is facing the right side! Now decorate the cover and interior to your taste.

Maria Luisa Naval I’m in love with the handicrafts. In my free time I always have something in hand, a work of patchwork, crochet, knitting or embroidery... For four years I’ve been learning in a studio bookbinding techniques, and by simple chance, looking for papers on a trade fair, I discovered scrapbooking. What a beautiful papers, stamps to stamp, paints, embellishments ... a world that won me over! I also love the world of Mixed Media. Today is one of my favorite hobbies. 26 Paper and Cotton
I present to you this “tree” to decorate your house for Halloween. This small wood tree can be used on many occasions to place adornments. This time I painted it with a spray of black ink. Enchants me the combination of black with pumpkin and that golden touch that gives it the small frame. Well .. and if you are a witch and you need a love spell ... you just have to ask me for the recipe for Love Potion for use only on the night of October 31!

Materials Cut:
Fabric for the outside 1 x rectangle with 18” x 12 3/4” (23 cm x 32 cm) Fabric for the inside 1 x rectangle with 18” x 12 3/4” (23 cm x 32 cm) Fabric for the inside flaps 2 x rectangles with 6” x 12 3/4” (15 cm x 32 cm) Ribbons and labels for decorating Cut your fabrics accurately. These measures are for a cover of an A4 book but you can easily make it for any other size! Simply measure the height of the book and the width of it opened and add 1” to the height and 1 ½” to the width. That will be your measures for the outside and inside fabrics.
1 - For the flaps you can use the same width I used (6”) and adjust the height accordingly. Start by folding the two pieces of fabric for the flaps in half, height wise, and iron them in place.
2 - Stitch a line at ¼” of the folded flap fabric. Repeat for the other piece of fabric.
3 - Pick up your fabric for the outside of the cover and draw a line with a heat disappearing pen at 3 ½” from the bottom.
4 - Using pins place your ribbon of choice aligned with the line you just made and stitch it in place.

5 - Using a piece of leftover fabric a little bit bigger than the tag you want to place in the front, stitch it in place at 3 “ of the top and centered in the front.
6 - Use decorative stitches to add a bit more of fun! After that, stitch the label you choose on top.
7 - It is time to layer all the pieces. Begin by securing the flaps to the inside fabric using pins, on the right side of it. Make sure the edge of each flap is aligned with each edge of the fabric. Then add the outside fabric right facing the inside one. Secure with pins.
8 - Stitch all around the four sides leaving an opening of about 3� to turn the fabrics. Make sure you clip a bit of fabric on the corners so they stay pretty when reversed.
12 - Stitch around all the cover as closer to the edge as you can. This will close the opening that was left for turning. Stitch all the way on the centerline so that the middle of the book is well marked.
11 - After turning the fabrics, iron well around the edges and after that fold the cover in half, vertical wise, and press on the middle so that the center of the cover is found. 34 Paper and Cotton

The angel cake or angel food cake is very popular in the United States, especially since the nineteenth century. As is done mainly with egg whites, is very light and is an excellent idea to take the ones left over from Christmas confection of delicacies that are made predominantly with egg yolks. It’s delicious, very easy, but it has some curious details in its confection!

Ingredients: - 1 ½ cup of icing sugar - 1 ½ cup of cake flour - 1 ½ cup of granulated sugar - 1 ½ cup of egg whites (12 if size M and 9-10 size L) - 1 ½ tsp of cream of tartar - 1 ½ tsp of vanilla extract - ¼ tsp of almond extract - ¼ tsp of salt
Pre heat the oven to 180º. Mix the icing sugar with the flour and set aside. In a bowl whisk the egg whites until they sre frothy, with an electric standing mixer, add the cream of tartar and fold well. Start adding the granulate sugar, 2 spoons at a time, vanilla and almond extracts and the salt. Continue to whisk untill all the ingredients are well mixed. Now add the mixture of icing sugar and flour. It is important that sieve sometimes not to add flour lumps. Mix gently by hand this mixture in your dough, until you have a uniform mass. Then pour the dough into a 25cm (10”) tube pan, not greased. Choose preferably a springform pan (the type of pan that the base and the sides are separated pieces). Bake for about 35 minutes or until the inside is dry (test with a toothpick). Remove from the oven and immediatly invert the pan onto a wine bottle or any kind of object that can hold the pan upside down and cool completely (about 2 hours). When cold remove it from the pan. Serve with berries or fruit jams or hot chocolate. I’m sure you’ll like it!

Ménière’s disease And suddenly everything go round! ...

Meniere’s disease is a chronic disorder of the inner ear that causes spontaneous episodes of severe, incapacitating vertigo – a sensation of spinning motion – lasting on the order of several minutes (usually 30 minutes) to a few hours (to 8 hours). In rare forms of the disease the patients experience sudden “drop-attacks”, and they fall suddenly to the ground without warning and without loss of consciousness. These attacks last only for a few seconds. 40 Paper and Cotton
Symptoms The Ménière’s disease is characterized by four major symptoms: Vertigo: this is usually episodic, occur without warning and the duration of each episode last at least 20 minutes to several hours. The vertigo attacks are rotational, similar to the sensation that you have if you spin around quickly several times and suddenly you stop. You feel that the things around you are still spinning, and you lose balance.
Hearing loss: may fluctuate, it is sensorineural and become worse during attacks. Most people experience permanently hearing loss. Tinitus: is the perception of a low tone ringing, whistling or roaring noise in the ear. Aural fulness: a sense of aural fulness or increase pressure in the ear.
Who is affected? Meniere’s disease most often affects adults between the ages of 40 to 60. About 3% are children. Female to male ratio ranges from equal to a slight preponderance of females over males. Most cases of the disease are unilateral, although 10-50% of cases develop symptoms in the opposite ear.
Cause of disease The cause of disease is unknown, but the spontaneous symptoms are thought to be caused by an “endolymphatic hydrops” – an increase in the fluid pressure of the inner ear.
Treatment At least half of all patients will have remission of their symptoms in the first few years. Prompt initiation of treatment can prevent progression of the disease
and of damage of the inner ear, that result in permanente hearing loss and incapacitating vertigo attacks. The goal of treatment is to control and relieve the symptoms, because there is no known cure for the disease, and to preserve good quality of life. The treatment is directed towards attempts to decrease the fluid pressure in the inner ear, and that is done with a low-salt diet. So don’t add salt to food or cooking, avoid high-salt foods, drink 6-8 glasses of water per day. Try that your daily salt (sodium) intake is reduced to 1500-2000 miligrams. The medications that are commonly prescribed for the management of severe attacks of vertigo with nauseas are sedatives, like diazepam (Valium) and anti histamine suppositories. When unremitting episodes of vertigo are not controlled with medical therapy, surgical intervention should be considered. There are various surgical techniques used for the treatment of the disease. The physician who will perform the surgery should discuss and choose with the patient, what type of procedure is the best option for each person. If you have been diagnosed with Ménière’s disease, it’s important to learn everything you can about this condition, so that you can decide better about your treatment.

The Seychelles are one islander
republic (more than 100 islands) and located to northwest of Madagascar and 1593 km from east african coast (at the level of Kenya). The first report of its European sighting occurred in 1502, during the second voyage of Vasco da Gama to India and named them the Islands of the Admiral, ie himself. The official languages are local Frenchbased creole (Seselwa, read as “Sécellois” with a French accent), French itself and English. In recent years there is a policy of environmentally sustainable tourism and directed towards a luxury tourism, finding some of the upper segment hotels on the best beaches.

MahĂŠ MahĂŠ is the main island of the Republic of Seychelles. It is a granitic island with numerous granitic hills covered by lush vegetation, virgin forests with numerous birds, but with beautiful beaches, relatively isolated and with few people. In it, is the capital of the country, Victoria, one of the smallest capitals in the world.
What to see Victoria presents as main attraction a market full of color and spice. The saleswomen are friendly and do not reject the photos, especially after having purchased their merchandise. Around the market there are several streets with small shops and some houses with traditional colonial architecture. Paper and Cotton 45

A small reproduction of London’s “Big Ben” is the largest monument of this small capital. It also presents a further small statue of Queen Victoria that goes unnoticed if not looking. Equally important is a small Hindu temple that stands out by its color and is free to visit (without shoes). Victoria has a more modern part built on artificial islands and connects, via a few kilometers from the motorway, to the small airport. When we say small is just that: almost a shed where one walks to the plane, with a few shops. If you want to buy craft is better to do it elsewhere. The biggest attraction of Mahé consists of its over 60 beaches (known as “Anse”) and the rich diversity of flora and fauna. In the northern part of the island there is the beach of Beau Vallon, a long sandy beach, which offers a wide range of hotels and other tourist accommodations. The southern part of the island also has Paper and Cotton 47
numerous beaches, these uncrowded. Some of the 5 star hotels have fully equipped beaches and with support services, although not private, almost running as they were. Besides the beaches, almost all with a name of French origin (Royale, Baie Lazare, A La Mouche, for example) is to visit the “Mission Lodge”, old ruins of a mission that is reached through narrow roads with landscape over the granite mountains and rainforest, from where you see the ocean and nearby islands. A tea plantation, with its factory can also be interesting to visit. 48 Paper and Cotton

Have some good spots to snorkel and one of its islands, the Moyenne island, has interesting ruins and beautiful beaches. This island was private until a few years ago and there is buried its last owner that gave it to the government for National Park. You can make a walking route all over the perimeter of the island. The biggest “danger” are the giant tortoises, scattered around the island, in which one may stumble.
The other islands Relatively close are the islands of Praslin and La Digue, also granitic and also surrounded by coral. The other islands are smaller and spaced, highlighting the island of Aldabra where there is a peculiar species of giant tortoise.

The rental of a small car (all with automatic gearbox) for 24 hours starts at 35 euros with a minimum coverage. An average car with good insurance costs around 100 euros for 24 hours.
