INK IN CHINA We find out what’s it like to be a chinese female tattoo artist in 2015
By NATALYA BENJAMIN
It seems that everyone today has at least one tattoo. Half way across the World in China however, it’s still a taboo to brand your body with ink. As westernisation in other aspects is welcomed, tattoos are still commonly linked to gang culture, crime and debauchery. Yet this stereotype is being broken down gradually and the younger Chinese generation is in the midst of a rebellious struggle between wanting to express themselves and family/social obedience. This struggle is even more so for girls as ideals of femininity and beauty are not at all linked with tattoos in the minds of the masses.
So when I found a new tattoo studio owned by a young couple who both Tattoo, I was nicely surprised to see the girl running it had the guts to be openly tatted up. It’s impressive for a female to take on a career like this when it is still greatly frowned upon here to even have body art – especially for women – let alone be a tattoo artist. I met up with 26 year old Leah Dizon (Wang Yitong) from Xi’an to talk about her life as a female tattoo artist in China, her family’s reaction to her career choice and her future children’s body art.
How long have you been a tattoo artist for? I’ve been tattooing for four years. I started after I graduated from college. When did you realize you wanted to become a tattoo artist? I’ve always been interested in drawing, ever since I was a child, and I studied fashion design at college, which led to me becoming a tattoo artist. How old were you when you got your first tattoo? I was nineteen and I got some wings at the base of my spine. What did your family and friends think? Actually my family was very supportive of my choice and they still are now. If you decide to have children in the future, will you mind if they want to have tattoos? No not at all. If they like tattoos and they are sure that’s what they want then of course I’ll support them and teach them. As a Chinese woman, do you feel there is a strong stigma against women with tattoos? The stigma definitely exists in China but it is slowly becoming more acceptable. I just focus on being myself though and I try not to think about what other people
think. I just want to be me, so I don’t worry about the outside’s opinions of tattoos. Have you ever encountered any problems because of your lifestyle and appearance? I haven’t experienced any problems with my family or anything but my tattoos do get me
‘’There are about 4 or 5 well known female tattoo artists here in Xi’an. It’s still quite rare’’ though’’ a lot of {negative} attention from other people. Initially it made me feel kind of uncomfortable but eventually I learned to embrace it. I just found that one day I didn’t care; it wasn’t a problem for me anymore. What do you think it will be like in the future in terms of women and tattoos being accepted in Chinese society? I don’t think there will be a significant change to be honest. China holds traditional values so it will always be considered unorthodox to have body art. Maybe people will accept small
patterns or something hidden, but big pieces like full sleeves I doubt will ever be seen as acceptable here. I think it will still greatly affect your job prospects as it does today. How many other female tattoo artists are there in Xi’an? There are about 4 or 5 well known female tattoo artists here in Xi’an. It’s still quite rare though. What advice would you give to other Chinese girls who want to get a tattoo or want to be a tattoo artist? It’s all about your personal values and preferences. It is a lifelong choice so when you are making that decision you must be prudent. Although it seems China is opening its mind to the idea of body art being more than just symbols of sin it doesn’t look like it will ever be totally acceptable in the mainstream. For a Chinese girl, having a tattoo is more than just self expression and creativity; it’s also a brave step against social protocol, which is a bigger feat than it would be in the West. Leah Dizon’s studio, ‘Xian Wenmo Tattoo,’ is on Lou Ma Shi street in Xi’an.

STREETFEST FESTIVAL 2015
WE JOIN STREETFEST

A
head down to east, early on the morning of the festival, packed up and ready to get the show on the road, hyped up!! the weather was banging, the sun was out and was shining bright over London city and was setting a nice vibe before we even got there. We can tell its going to be a good day.
‘’we fell in love with streetfest as soon This year as we hEARd about we had the it, urban chance to with culture! Work That’s right the Streetfest up our team and street’’ join the
festival to give everyone the Paperchasers Ink urban tattoo experience, London city needed a festival that showcases the true elements of urban culture and
Streetfest has it all, for all of you who don’t know about the fest and have missed the past years, you are missing out! with brands like Adidas and Redbull putting their name's to the festival, you know Streetfest are doing big things. All day the vibes were crazy, positive and fun with people from all backgrounds and of all ages, having the time of their life, the Adidas stage
was packed full of music artists who ripped the mic up like MC Loyle Carner, Hannah Faith, Shamz Le Roc, Butterz Records, So Fresh, So Clean, The Doctor’s Order and loads more, and then we have the The Unsigned London Stage that had loads of raw and yet full of underground talented artists from all over the UK.
their was loads for the little ones to do like breakdancing with the Urban Arts Academy workshop, seeing them larning how to bust a move was so much fun, you never know we could have been watching some future breakdancing champions. Outside was crazy as well with with the Red Bull Stage and a thrilling mix of skate and bmx competitions, demonstrations, include the MiniRamp ProInvitational Contest for skateboard and inline skates, skateboarding games, and pro's like Red Bull’s own Kyle Forte doing his thing

loads more skaters and riders showing off their skills. We had the Paperchasers Ink magazine shop in the same room as the Adidas stage so the music was pumping all day, we love showing people what Paperchasers Ink is all about and for the fest we asked amazing tattoo artist Amanda the owner of 'Aggys Ink' tattoo shop to be our stall tattooist and her work is crazy! So we had the tattooing going on, magazines & merchandise on sale, clothing & we cant stop there! we had to do some body painting as well, and we
‘’BIG UP ALL OF THE STREETFEST TEAM AND EVERYONE WHO MADE IT DOWN TO THIS YEARS FEST’’ got down Ayesha Weekes who done a killer 'Paperchasers Ink' piece on our girl Gem. and talking about graffiti, we absolutely loved getting to Watch all the graffiti artists at work, from start to finish, it was so awesome! The final pieces were outstanding pieces of art, big and small, they defiantly brought the place to life and left a true urban mark behind at tobacco docks, just a shame they can’t stay there until next year. We thoroughly enjoyed our team down at streetfest and the vibe was great as there was so many creative people in one space. Streetfest is without doubt the sickest London based urban culture festival and if you haven’t attended over previous years then you are missing out, this is definitely one to add to your calendar, see you in 2016..

irstly let us start with saying a huge thank you, for coming to down to work with us for the day, how did you like the fest? It was a long day, seemed like we got lots of interest which was great. Loads of
people watching me work and coming to the stall which was great, but to be honest I was working so much I didn’t get to see what else was going on. Thats the same with us, there was so much going on we didnt get to see everything, we are really

interested in finding out how you got started on the road to becoming a tattoo artist, have you always been into art? Arts always been my thing! I’ve always done drawings since I was younger. I went on to college and studied art and then I went to university and studied illustration, when I left uni I didn’t know what I was going to be doing either tattoos or possibly teaching! I managed
to get an apprenticeship so I was really lucky there and now Im a tattoo shop owner of three years!
well but as long as people understand that tattoos are for life and you can’t change them like clothes.
Well done, we love the hustle, we can see from your work that you come from a art background, When did you realise you wanted to do art on skin and not paper anymore?. i realised when I was watching Miami ink, what you could actually do on skin when it comes to tattoos.
Thats so true, so whats the worst tattoo you’ve seen so far? Well I have seen quite a few really bad angels that have come in or angels whose hands looked decrepit or just really bad portraits which are normally the worse as they don’t look like the actual person.
What do you think about people that get inked solely for fashion? I think that people do follow trends to a point, I think people do see other peoples tattoos and really like them. Like with David Beckham a lot of people went and got his tattoo on there back or when people see that people have stars people will like them and copy and go and get more. But there is like trends with tattoos I think at the moment, a lot of people want roses, skulls and clocks and then some people wanted angels because of David Beckham so there is kind of like trends and stages of different things that come and go but I think as an artist you can talk to your client and see if they are confident with what they want and that they understand that it is there for life. I think tattoos are slightly a fashion statement and partly to do with vanity as
We have seen loads of tattoos like that as well, Your head tattoo is gorgeous, we love it!! who designed it and who tatted you? My head tattoo was done by an artist called Darien and she has a shop Tenacious tattoos in Sheffield, but she also comes down to London and works from Divine canvas every month or so for about a week.
‘’as long as people understand that tattoos are for life and you can’t change them like clothes’’
We like her work, We did ask you last time you featured but as always, what do you think of Paperchasers Ink? I think it’s a good thing its putting a different spin on what tattoo magazines in the UK and it attracts more of a specific generation and targets a complete different audience which I think is really good as it’s different from what all the shops have. Also it shows different artwork and also shows artwork on darker skin. Thats what we are all about!! Thanks for joining us at Fest and showing the movement love, we are sure our readers will be seeing more of you and your shop in more of our mags.

EASTERN
ELECTRICS
.astern electrics is a house festival that takes place in Hatfield house, Hertfordshire. It’s an awesome location, surrounded by beautiful countryside settings you feel like your deep into the sticks and no where near a 40 minute ride away from London! After attending last year, I can definitely say the house scene is ever growing and the festival itself was busy, at least 2,000 ravers more than last year.
E
As soon as we boarded the train from London the vibes were buzzing. We landed in EE and I was pleased to see so many ink lovers! Making my way around the festival talking to many people was a great chance to speak to people about when and were they got there ink. The music is all house orientated, so which ever stage or tent you find you will be in for a treat as the line up this year was sick. For me my favourite set had to be Dj Ez who ‘’this years ee played a festival was classic banging!! Even old skool better than last house and garage set, year’’ although that said it was such a good set that there just wasn’t enough room and was no where near big enough to accommodate the audience that was trying to squeeze, it reminded me of being in the middle of rampage during a 1xtra set! The VIP area had some cool hang out spots, were we took a few cheeky snaps and sipped a few cocktails on a hammock in the sun. Overall eastern electrics is one to look out for and have on your list for next year and if you love house music you will love this. See some of the pictures from my time at Eastern Electrics here, peace

BOOM
BAP
REAL HIP HOP LIVES AT BOOM BAP FEST As we spoke about in Issue 7 Boom Bap festival is the biggest Hip hop festival in the UK. With such a unique audience Boom Bap has managed to capture and provide them with a festival, that focuses on there love for Hip hop and the culture that goes with it. Boom Bap started out in 2012 with only eight hundred attendees, somewhere in Peterborough. It now has a following of sixteen thousand, and is held over three days, giving you the option to camp and enjoy being a part of the Boom Bap community. I got the Boom Bap blues, that’s for sure. It was a truly awesome weekend with such great vibes. Leaving for the festival was slightly daunting, as we set for the road with nothing but our backpacks, tents and sleeping bags. As we arrived many hours later, somewhere in Mildenhall it was full on, we had landed in the land of Boom Bap hip hop heads, let the fun begin.
Getting our tent up was an experience in itself, the fact that it was dark did not help. Little did we realise that there was a whole hierarchy of tent categories and we was soon checking out other peoples for size and counting rooms, amazing! From the moment we arrived the never ending list of sick artists had already begun, keeping you on your toes. If not you were sure to miss something, there was just so
many artists. The headliners lineup was crazy over the weekend starting with Skepta, Earl sweatshirt, Jeru the Damaja, Sandman, Skinnyman, P money, Chester P and The Four Owls just to name a few.
‘’THE boom bap VIBES ARE crazy! Everyone is there for the love of hip hop, real hip hop heads not FOR the part timers!
OUR BOOM BAP
HIGHLIGHTS ‘’dirty dike on the main stage cussing out the police as they do a lap of the fest during his set’ ‘' WATCHING THE TENT NEXT TO US, LITERALLY FIGHT ALL WEEKEND TO KEEP THERE TENT UP” #WAYTOODRUNK ‘’hanging it out with dj kabash and getting entry to his secret hideout & SEEING HIS CRAZY ARTWORK’
‘’this years lineup was so fucking mad, god knows who is going to be hitting the stages in 2016’’ But that was just the start as the list went on with Foreign beggars, Jam Baxter, Dirty Dike and Onoe Caponoe just to name a few. Let’s not forget the artists on the other stages that to performed down at Boom Bap starting with Milkavelli, Tenchoo, Genisis Elijah and Oracy again the never ending list of unbelievable talent is surprising.
BREAKFAST WAS GREAT AS ONE STALL OFFERED VARIATIONS OF A FULL ENGLISH WITH A VEGGIE OPTION, MOST IMPRESSED,
‘’phill mitchel is all I’m gonna say as we got to taste SOME bad boy space cookies and got high’’ WATCHING THE FOUR OWLS PERFORM LIVE IS ALWAYS A PLEASURE BUT THIS WAS DEFINITELY A HIGHLIGHT, AS THESE GUYS SURE DO KNOW HOW TO PUT ON A GREAT SHOW
We enjoyed checking out some of the urban stalls available over the weekend, bringing you freshly pressed tshirts from Fatnek and Cool snapbacks from Blue Cheese clothing. We loved the concept of some of the other stalls and booths they had there but our favourite had to be the interactive art stall kabash-art, by the awesome artist/DJ Kabash who we also had the pleasure to meet.
‘’Boom bap is fucking amazing HIP HOP FESTIVAL THAT IS NOT TO BE MISSED and we loved every bit of it’’
During your stay you will also most importantly need to be eating well, and if you forgot your packed lunch no worries as they have it all covered with some extremely delicious food stalls to choose from stone baked pizzas, delicious Burritos and vegetable curries at the cafe, churros, crepes and even a full english in the morning. If you needed a break from being by the stages or grabbing a bite to eat, one of the best places to hang out was in our camping village in VIP surrounded by true hip hop heads as we chilled in style and became a community for the weekend. The free-styling that took place was dope as were some of the deep hip hop/music culture conversations. Overall the time spent at Boom Bap was truly enjoyed by all of the team and I think it’s safe to say we will be back there next year. We loved being a part of the community and being surrounded by true hip hop lovers, as the urban world after all is our home.

PRODUCT EARTH
WE SPEND THE WEEKEND AT THE UK’S FIRST HEMP FESTIVAL & LEARN THE TRUTH ABOUT THE BEST PLANT IN THE WORLD
THE WORLD OF PRODUCT EARTH W
.ell it’s no secret that this was an event I was most looking forward to, being a stoner myself I not only had some personal interest in this festival, but after meeting many of the positive role models that are behind the influence of the legalisation of cannabis for medicinal purposes I was keen to attend. So with my bag packed and a hotel booked for the night, I was ready for the start to my weekend as we hit the motorway and headed straight out of London towards Peterborough. Hours later we arrived to the land of Product Earth, the car park was packed! I couldn’t believe the size of the venue and it was awesome to see just how many people!! An outdoor stage along with food, drink and a mega cool VIP bus!
The indoor market had me, as I enthusiastically walked around from stall to stall looking at all types of cool smoking paraphernalia, along with all types of hemp based products. My favourite of the stalls had to be the winning wheel game, as with every
‘’WEED WILL GET YOU HIGH BUT MOST PEOPLE DONT KNOW THAT IT CAN HELP TO SAVE YOUR LIFE’’ spin you was a winner and I was lucky enough to walk away with rizla, lighters, three bongs, three rasta pipes and some liquid gold! They had some really cool merchandise also ranging from clothing, playing cards and hemp based food. It was most defiantly an experience with lots to do for all, not just an expo! As a new festival Product earth is one to look out for and I have to say well done guys as for it’s first year the turn out and support was amazing! It was great to be part of an experience and environment that embraces cannabis
‘’PRODUCT EARTH IS GOING TO GROW INTO SOMETHING AMAZING’’ as well as being full of fun and interesting facts as appose to most of the previous events I have been to that tend to be very boring. Live interviews and interesting talks with those who have a greater knowledge and understanding of how effective this oil can actually be. I found most interesting the q&a with young Chico as he spoke about being diagnosed at a young age and he speaks of his journey with his mother who explains her reason for having to make the decision to
allow him to start to self medicate through oil and eventually vaping as appose to using the treatment offered at the hospital which had serious side effects that were making him ill and lifeless. Luckily of them they moved to America and live in a state that it is legal to buy and use cannabis and within in a short period Chico got well and back to being a healthy young man. Overall we had an amazing time down at product earth and can not wait till the same time and place next year.

WE GO NUTS AT
NASS FESTIVAL
WE COVER THE UK’S BEST URBAN SPORTS FESTIVAL, MET BIG NARSTIE AND THE LEGEND TONY HAWK & HAD A EPIC WEEKEND
100% NASS IS A KICKASS FEST
ell it was Hype indeed!! We arrived to Nass early hours friday morning, as we set up camp and made ourselves at home for the weekend. Waking up on Friday the energy gradually built up towards an amazing day, The sun was shining and the festival in full swing.
W
It’s impossible to get bored at Nass, as there is unlimited amounts of fun
taking place at all times, there sure is something to cater to everyone. The vibes at Nass this year were sky high, with just under 10,000 festival goers it sure was crazy!
‘’ THERE ARE PEOPLE ROLLING We had such an awesome AROUND ON time at the festival and most definitely made our BMX’S, presence felt at Nass by SKATEBOARDS ALL talking with lots of DAY AS WELL AS beautifully tatted people, as well as making some new LOADS OF MUSIC life long friends. ARTISTS KILLING The Main Stage had a ALL THE STAGES, never ending list of WELCOME TO headlining acts including Enter Shakira, Rebel Nass! ’’ Sound, Public Enemy and
‘’the sika stage had artists like klashnekoff, bva, tenchoo and loads more, it was crazy’’ Stormzy plus more playing back to back all weekend long. Finally a massive shout out to Chris down at the Sika stage and all his hard work as the Sika stage was definitely popping off all weekend long, it was in full effect from 2pm all day and night the place was always rammed with people enjoying themselves almost like a main stage, the lineup was full of undergrounds finest emcees the vibes were sick.
The other stages were made up of dirt tracks, ramps not forgetting the competitions also taking place also a main centre or attraction and something amazing to see. If you forget to bring a packed lunch you can’t go hungry with a large variety of food stalls available and a indoor shopping market made up of many cool urban clothing and skating outlets. The highlights of my Nass experience would most definitely have to be watching and meeting Tony Hawk, a true legend and getting to have a quick talk with him about Big Narstie was super cool. The performance I most enjoyed starting with Rebel Sounds set, as again it was all about the vibes for us and I’m a sucker for lighting all that cool shit
‘’NASS FESTIVAL IS ONE OF THE BEST FESTIVALS WE HAVE EVER BEEN TO!!!’’ that goes with it, the show looked awesome. Witnessing Lethal Bizzle perform was fun too as I most enjoyed the crazy mosh pit that formed under his instruction, people really enjoyed his set and respect to his fans that firmed it through the rain to see him perform on the main outdoor stage, as they respect what festivals are all about!! Finally the favourite was raving at Sigmas set in the warehouse which was totally dope to be surrounded by so many ravers in a warehouse somewhere in Somerset it was epic and we had a real good time. Creating memories that will last a life time Nass has only been running since 2012 and have done incredibly well to have such a high turn out in such a short time. The festival itself and it’s concept is totally awesome and we loved it! You would be a fool to miss out next year as we can not wait, we are ready to do it all over again. Thank you Nass for having us down, we loved it!

See some of what's it like at NASS festival in the day time, everyone is on a vibe, parting, shopping, rolling about.. Chilling at the Sika tent or the main stage,, we love it
The birdhouse team &
Tony hawk At nass
TONY AND THE BIRDHOUSE TEAM WAS AT NASS AND THEY SMASHED IT. IT WAS CRAZY!! WATCHING A MASTER OF THE CHATTA WITH TONY BOARD STILL PULLING OFF NEW TRICKS WITH THE ENERGY THAT HAS STAYED WITH HIM FROM THE DAY HE STARTED SKATING OVER 40 YEARS AGO, is nuts!!.
As the sun goes down and day becomes night at Nass the vibes start to change and it starts to get a little bit louder, as you feel the atmosphere become just that little bit more relaxed it's party time! Festival goers at Nass sure do know how to have a good time we raved all night long.
If you like skating you would of loved this, you sure did miss out. Nass offers a great selection when it comes to skating with ramps galore, it was a skaters paradise at Nass. The ultimate collection of ramps was the place to be as you watched world class pro’s in the building showing off there ill skills, as they worked the ramps indoor and out.

LOOKING AT THE PUSSY "I was at Bestival one year and I'd ran out of beer but I was also pretty skint. Instead of spending a fiver on a pint I decided to buy some beer off of some guys who were selling their own bottles out of the back of their car for a couple of quid each. When I got back to my friends and took that first gulp, it was quite clear they'd sold me bottles of actual piss. I didn't go back and confront them as they looked like they could easily beat me up." – Oscar Skinner
In 2012, at the Hanuman Yoga festival in Boulder, Colorado, one woman had the unpleasant experience of lifting the seat on a portaloo toilet to find a man hiding in the waste tank. The man later fled, covered in s**t, but was subsequently arrested and labelled a pervert. After initially admitting to the crime, he later denied it.
CRAZY FESTIVAL "I was dancing away in a field at Secret Garden Party when it began to rain torrentially so we decided to take a quick jaunt back to the tent to grab anoraks. It was on the home straight, within sight of our tent, that I lost my footing on the nowperilous ground and sank foot first into a suspiciously deep puddle of swamp-like mud. The smell rising from the disturbed trough confirmed my greatest fears - I had fallen into a hole filled to the brim with human shit. To this day, I don’t understand what would drive somebody to think ‘I really need to shit, I’ll dig a hole in the middle of this busy track and go there’ and then what would drive other people to see it, and think ‘what a fucking brilliant idea, I’ll go in there as well.’” – El Hunt
FREE ALCOHOL & KENDRICK LAMAR I managed to get a VIP pass to Pitchfork Chicago for the Sunday. They had loads of free alcohol so I ended up getting completely hammered. Then my friend gave me a pot brownie, which didn’t help the situation. At some point we ended up in the crowd to see Kendrick Lamar and there was this hot guy’s butt pushing up against my crotch. I was too wasted to realise what I was doing, so I grabbed his waist and started dancing. Suddenly he turns around and is like, ‘You’re trying to pick my pockets!’ and punches me in the head. Luckily, it was pretty painless and I escaped.” – Nick Thompson
STORIES
I THINK THEIR IS SOME COKE DOWN THERE Perhaps this made sense at one point, perhaps this fella had seen Trainspotting too many times, but at Oregon Country Fair a man became trapped in the toilet pit after venturing in to look for drugs
MY TENT WAS FLOATING AWAY Heavy rain in 2005 saw not only the fields get water-logged, but the streams running through the site burst their banks. The festival toilets promptly sank in the quagmire, spreading human waste through the expanding sea. What's worse, one of the bars sank.
FROM AROUND THE INTERNET WHERE THE FUCK! HAS MY TENT GONE “Reading festival is a horror story in itself. I was forced to go in 2009 after I’d finished my exams as all of my friends wanted to go. This was the year before the ‘fire safety team’ was introduced, and I’d heard there was often rioting on the Sunday night. Of course, when I returned to my tent on Sunday night I found that everyone had gone crazy and my tent had been burnt to the ground along with my sleeping bag. I ended up trying to sleep on the grass, shivering in the cold and using my backpack as a pillow. Never again.” – Lsi Cooper
