FOREWORD Object permanence is the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be observed (seen, heard, touched, smelled or sensed in any way). Object permanence is considered to be one of the natural steps in the developmental pathway of a child. When we're little children, we don't know that something is still there when we can't see it, which is what makes playing games like peek a boo with a baby so fun. Babies are surprised to see us appear after having been obscured, and surprise, in a baby, usually manifests in joy and laughter. But somewhere along the way, as we grow into adults, we figure out that just because we can't see something, that doesn't mean it isn't there.. We lose a sense of joy when something we couldn't see suddenly reappears, because we simply took for granted that it was still there. Artists are always playing with our generally accepted ideas about reality, and what we can and cannot assume exists. Maybe it's the role of art to bring us back to that child-like place where we question whether something is actually there when we're not looking at it. That's why we've titled the second Papercut All Art Issue Object Impermanence. Dina Brodsky’s surreal interior paintings depict rooms that seem to hold secrets that will reveal themselves in the moment just past the one we can see, and Jordan Clayton’s organic abstract work make us feel like we’re seeing inside our own bodies. From the disembodied disco balls of Leah Pipergas, to Melanie Bernier’s fabric life saving devices and vices, these artists test the way we perceive the world around us. We hope that the art in this issue will bring you back to a place where you experience genuine joy and wonder at what you see. We are delighted to bring you Object Impermanence.

“The Meat&Geometry cycle consists of the result of observation and fascination with the biological processes, as well as that which is carnal, nonaesthetic, and common among all living organisms. The concept is based on the contrast between the organic and the technical. What is organic, even if beautiful, is generally perceived as bilious, nonaesthetic, and irritating. Living organisms—plants, animals, and finally the human—live. However, they are also subject to biological processes like rotting and decay. Following the period of growth or increased development comes the slow process of dying. The cycle comes full circle—nothing is permanent. I'm fascinated by the contrast between those two worlds, which are seemingly disjunctive yet existing so close to each other: biology and physicality against modernity, the city and the cold spaces of industrial, post-factory halls or dehumanized interiors of office buildings.”

“Faerieland is a dark fairytale, told much in the eerie style of old children’s books and symbolizes the struggle of human experiences in severing itself from its origins (nature, ourselves) and what it looks like and means to go back to it. This collection is brought into being through specific metaphorical characters and the places they live around & within, all meant to symbolize and represent the personalities, challenges & agendas we experience in the journey back from somewhere so far from ourselves, so far from home.

“The world I depict is not a physical location in space and time. It is an inner world; a world where thought, emotion and raw cognition defines not only the figures, but also the space they inhabit. For me, the creative process is a key to that inner, psychological world—balancing on the border of the conscious and subconscious and revolving around themes like how we relate to the world we live in, the definition of “self” contra the surrounding world, our bodily integrity and mortality. My work often deals with issues such as alienation, loneliness, and the pursuit of an unattainable inner harmony. In general, I am very interested in the inner life of people, and that carries through in the way my figures turn out. Their various disfigurements, missing body parts and multiple angles is a symbol of their psychology and cognitive mechanisms.“
