A stunning exhibition featuring over 35 of the finest paper creators will open The Paper Trail, a weekend celebrating the art of paper. Hosted by Paper Runway at Art Park in the Byron Bay’s Arts and Industrial Estate, the exhibition will showcase hanging pieces and sculptures that reveal the artists’ love of paper. Just some of the names exhibiting include homewares and stationery illustrator Leah Bartholomew whose range, Beneath The Sun, features locally-produced and environmentally conscious products made from natural, quality materials; The Hungry Workshop will show off luscious letterpress designs, and you’ll see intricate paper sculptures by Australia’s James Gordon and UK artists’ Rob Ryan, Helen Musselwhite, Barry Goodman and Damien Barlow. Marvel at the ethereal world created by Hobart-based artist Beth Emily, you’ll want to take one – or more! – of her pieces home with you. All art works are for sale and each artist will be donating a portion of sales to National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN). There will also be special giveaways during the evening and across the weekend.

Anne Franke “Blanc de Neige” Hand-cut paper paper jewellery Together with two partners, I’m running the renowned design studio Art des Hauses. Some of our clients are paper mills and paper sales organizations. My affinity with fine, sensual uncoated papers started out there – the communication strategy we developed for these companies, was about using paper to promote paper. The samples books, for example, featured shaped, cut and embossed paper objects which were embedded in a framework story. However, my creative involvement with this material went far beyond my day-to-day work and I completed a collection of jewellery, made from a combination of paper, silver and stainless steel, called “Blanc de Neige”. www.art-des-hauses.com

With a Diploma in Fine Art and a love of textiles, Anne Leon has led a rich artistic career spanning 30 years. Her vast experience encompasses screen, lino and block printing, hand painting, marbling, batik, Shibori, and natural plant dying. Anne Leon’s fabric design studio produces custom handprinted textiles on a range of fabrics from fine silk to cotton, hemp, wool and furnishing canvas. Barry Goodman ‘Routemaster’ Collagraph Print Barry originally intended to become an architect. but studied Graphic Design instead, before pursing a successful career in Design and illustration. He later studied printmaking at The London College of Printing. His design background led naturally into the production of larger graphic prints and paintings, which have been widely exhibited both across the UK and internationally. HOW DID YOU WORK WITH PAPER AS A CHILD? My first and earliest memory of working with paper as a child was drawing my Granny’s ironing board, cutting it out and making a model of sorts. Christine has studied at Southern Cross University, Lismore and Monash University in Victoria. She is currently teaching Fine Arts at Lismore TAFE and painting at SCU. Christine has lived in the rainforest west of Mullumbimby for the last 30 years and derives much of her inspiration from her immediate surroundings. Graduate of a BA print and surface design course at Leeds College of Art. I illustrate through the method of hand paper cutting and I am inspired by outer space, time travel and the depths of the ocean. I am a real child at heart with a fun and imaginative outlook on life, even though my work looks a little dark and scary! HOW DID YOU WORK WITH PAPER AS A CHILD? I studied graphic design and illustration and I’ve worked in the creative world ever since, from an early incarnation designing and making decorative home accessories to more recently a dalliance with jewellery design. Always on a creative quest, 5 years ago I found my ultimate medium and a love affair with paper began. Working with various paper types and nature as my muse, I cut, fold, score and layer paper to create intriguing and intricate views into a world of flora and fauna. Jo Neville ‘Lost for words’ Sculptural Paper Coat The coat has been made using brown paper, embroidery thread, the flowers are made from The Hamlyn Pocket Thesaurus of English Words printed in 1979. The jacket is lined in a vintage wallpaper from the late 60s, possibly early 70s. The finished coat is hanging on an antique hanger.

Once upon a time I was a graphic designer, having studied graphic design at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. After years of designing Corporate Identity, Annual Reports and packaging for others in a studio in Sydney I discovered my real love – paper. I started Paper Couture in 2000 as a studio / retail space now in Artarmon where I specialise in bespoke stationery and paper installations for corporate and private clients. I make everything I can out of paper. “I love paper because it is sensual and tactile and the internet isn’t! Paper has texture and sometimes makes a noise, it can rustle or tear and it usually smells good. Kate Ford â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Untitledâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Kate has a passion for handmade paper and has spent the last eight years, prior to relocating to Byron Bay, working closely with the Euraba Artist and Papermakers with whom she continues to have a close relationship. She also teaches art at TAFE. Kate trained at the Canberra School of art specialising in photomedia and papermaking and has a multi-disiplinery approach to making her work, painting, drawing, stitching and casting along with a strong interest in artists books to create works that respond to the environment.

I also write poetry and design fashion. Inspired by Fairytales, my work has a strong narrative quality. My artwork is exhibited internationally and my books have found their way into some interesting places, such as the bookshelf of iconic film director, Tim Burton. Lilly Blue â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Surrenderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Ink and watercolour on paper Once upon a time there was a small girl child called Lilly who lived in a tree house at the edge of the sky. She loved making things out of sticks and string and believed in fairies and the thunder beings of flooded streets. When she was not wandering the world in search of treasure you could find her in the arms of a liquid amber with her dreams in the breeze. Over the years her adventures took her across oceans to the Islands and mountains of the earth. Determined to grow up only enough to run away she continues to write poetry in the sand, knowing that everything beautiful is washed away to nothing, and that from nothing everything beautiful grows. Lilly has become a storyteller, unchartered mapmaker and concocter of poetic days, sunlit and shadow filled. With Studies covering sculpture, drawing, water colours and oil painting both in Europe and Australia, she has a Diploma in Colour Consulting and received the Award for Excellence in Colour & Design at the ISCD. Through many careers, art and travel have been constants, providing a fundamental experience of truth and being. Mr Yen | Johnathan Chapman ‘Today is Your Day’ Hand-cut paper All my pieces are created by hand, with a scalpel, and each design is cut from one single sheet of paper, with all materials being sourced from the UK. Every piece of papercut work I create (for either a client or customer), is a one of a kind piece of work, being truly unique, as is the clients project or the customer receiving the papercut piece. HOW DID YOU WORK WITH PAPER AS A CHILD? As a child I mostly used paper for writing on. I loved nothing more than sitting down to make up stories that included titles such as “The Mermaid and the Minotaur” I’ve always been inspired by myths and legends, with nature also playing a large part in where I find inspiration for my paper cut pieces. www.mr-yen.com

Paul McNeill ‘Sunday’ Acrylic on paper Legend of the board, high Lord of Byron – aka The Mayor, distinguished Mambo artist, shark hunter, friend of famous people, models and the average Joe, this is Paul McNeil. Paul is a highly influential and widely published Australian artist with exhibitions in NYC, London, Melbourne and Sydney, several books under the belt, and a long list of collaborations with the who’s who of the Australian and international rock, surf and garment worlds. Paula Mills ‘Circles of Pattern Collage’ Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Paula studied commercial art and graphics and enjoyed a career as an art director and graphic designer both in South Africa and London. “Once my babies came along and after tragically losing my mother, I found myself turning back to my love of drawing and embarked on a new career as an illustrator.’ Paula has her own creative business called Sweet William, selling her fine art prints and illustrations. ‘There is pattern in everything. This is particularly true of the natural world. I draw inspiration from these intricate patterns, and can lose myself for hours interpreting what I see into ink drawings. I collect vintage paper and ephemera which often makes its way into my work in the form of collage, adding texture to my illustrations. Rachel Castle founded CASTLEANDTHINGS in 2008 with the launch of her embroidered artworks, hand screen prints on paper, and range of bedlinen in her online store. Rachel has spent the past 20 years working in the homewear industry both in Australia and abroad. Prior to CASTLE, Rachel was joint founder of London-based branding and design agency, The Nest and, before that, worked for The Conran Shop in the UK. Rob Ryan â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Later That Nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Hand-cut paper

Rob Ryan was born in 1962 in Akrotiri, Cyprus. He studied Fine Art at Trent Polytechnic and at the Royal College of Art, London where he specialised in Printmaking. Since 2002 he has been working principally within the paper cutting medium. Although he views himself first and always as a fine artist, his intricate papercut work adapts itself readily to screenprinting which has then transferred to ceramics, fabrics, lasercutting and other surfaces. He has collaborated with Paul Smith, Liberty of London, Fortnum and Mason and Vogue, along with many other established companies. His work often consists of whimsical figures paired with sentimental, grave, honest and, occasionally humorous pieces of writing, which he readily admits are autobiographical. www.misterrob.co.uk

Sarah Harvey ‘Singing for their supper’ Ink, Collage & Varnish on Japanese paper, Golden Book pages and old found papers on Stonehenge paper Sarah Harvey grew up on a small farm in Caniaba on the Northern Rivers of NSW. She had her first real taste of printmaking at Central St Martins College in London in 2003 and went on to gain a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (with a major in printmaking) from Queensland College of Art, Brisbane (Griffith University) in 2008. In 2010 she held her first solo show and won the emerging artist prize at Walker St Gallery in Melbourne. Her work is held in many national and international collections, including the Print Council of Australia, Melbourne and QUT Art Museum, Brisbane. Her work is largely an exploration into the attachment to childhood memories, and the forgotten joy, mystery and nostalgia associated with that time.
