Wife and husband, Kara and Chris Town, are the creative directors behind A Happy Death. An unusual name some might say but one which Kara and Chris hope will resonate into contributing to make a better world by sharing visual pleasure and encouraging environmental awareness. We chatted with Kara recently about A Happy Death, here is what she (they) had to say…

Thanks for joining us at Paper Runway. Tell us about A Happy Death? A Happy Death’s aim was, and indeed is, to give artists a simple, freely accessible platform to enable them to share their work; whereby we act as curators if you like. We invite artists to create a collection for us that is, very importantly, true to their aesthetic. It’s certainly not a new concept, however, we wanted to represent a broader discipline of artists, to step outside ‘the norm’, and bring art to the masses through the clever guise of stationery. It is also paramount to us that, if we are going to be putting paper goods out there, we do so with an environmental conscience. Consequently, all cards are printed in Australia, using FSC approved 100% recycled card and envelope and vegetable inks. How did the name evolve? Over six years ago, when we first moved in together, Chris had a rather substantial book collection. When rearranging the bookshelves one day, I noticed he had a few copies of one particular Albert Camus novel, ‘A Happy Death’. The name just resonated with me. For years I had my heart set on a retail/gallery space of the same name, but that soon transitioned into the A Happy Death of today. Our name is undeniably strange, when placed next to other stationery labels, but it reflects our desire to contribute to a better world; one of sharing visual pleasure and encouraging environmental awareness, no matter how small our contribution may be. It’s essentially why we adopted the catch cry ‘…a life well used brings a happy death’.

A husband and wife team, some might cringe at the thought of working with their spouse, how do you two work together? Believe me (us) we had our reservations, but honestly we are very much a team in the Town household, we have learnt to be. We figured out very early in our marriage that compromise is the key, and it certainly extends into the business. We are pretty damn good friends too, that helps mightily.

Hosted by Paper Runway at Art Park at the Byron Bay’s Arts and Industrial Estate, the exhibition will showcase hanging pieces and sculptures that reveal the artists’ love of paper. Just some of the names exhibiting include homewares and stationery illustrator Leah Bartholomew whose range, Beneath The Sun, features locally-produced and environmentally conscious products made from natural, quality materials; The Hungry Workshop will show off luscious letterpress designs, and you’ll see intricate paper sculptures by Australia’s James Gordon and UK artists’ Rob Ryan, Helen Musselwhite, Barry Goodman and Damien Barlow. Marvel at the ethereal world created by Hobart-based artist Beth Emily, you’ll want to take one – or more! – of her pieces home with you. The Paper Trail | Workshops Here’s your chance to make paper gems, monsters, luscious party décor and so much more all on the one weekend! Yes, for three special days in May, Byron Bay will be your inspiration, your haven for papier d’amour. Twelve presenters will host a range of workshops for The Paper Trail from May 25-27. Like who, you ask? Well, Kate Ford kicks off the festivities in style with a paper-making workshop. Explore the basic techniques of hand papermaking, from sheet forming to watermarks and inclusions. Learn how to prepare pulp using recycled paper and tips for doing it at home. In her second workshop, participants will learn how to handstich their own hard and soft cover sketchbook or journal. On Saturday, 26 May, join Craig Rochfort zine creator and Art Park co-owner, who has had his work exhibited at art book fairs in Tokyo, Milan, London, Sydney and the United States. Craig will be talking about types of zines, how to make them and also how to distribute them to likeminded zine fans around the world. Get into making geometric collage and crazy paper gems with Marsha Golemac of Three Nations. Anne Leon will guide you through the art of ancient Gyotaku printing – a traditional form of fish printing dating from the 19th century. Kitiya Palaskas will show you how to make the best piñatas using cardboard and a whole lot of decoration, perfect for the adults and children alike. She will guide your through creative gift wrapping in style using homemade stamps, recycled materials and gorgeous wrapping paper. This workshop is proudly sponsored by La la Land.

Join Inside History magazine editor Cassie Mercer for a look at the lost art of letter writing, and savour the time to write a messgae to a loved one. John Murphy Words & Interview by Katy Elliott

American artist John Murphy creates beautiful limited-edition prints which are regularly exhibited in Philadelphia and New York, and collected worldwide. His imagery merges vintage and modern sensibilities, exploring ideas of beauty and fantasy within the decorative arts, and the results are absolutely stunning. Since I was driving, I listened to her lecture without seeing any of the visuals; it was kind of like listening to a book-ontape where you have to create your own pictures to go along with the words. Listening like this built up great suspense and, when I actually got to see her paper cuttings, I was in awe at not only how vibrant and animated they were, but also at how poor my imagined versions were by comparison.

My introduction to Béatrice Coron was completely serendipitous. It happened on a tedious drive to the airport when I plugged my phone into the car stereo and, instead of shuffling through songs, I decided to listen to a TED talk. For me, TED is brain food and, in the case of Béatrice’s TED talk, it’s inspired brain food that serves to feed the imagination.

It was then that I said, “I am going to find her.” Now, outside of being able to work in your pyjamas, there are few perks to freelance journalism. But one of the things I love about this work is that it provides an excuse to approach creative people who are inspiring. Speaking to Béatrice reminded me of how inter-connected we are on this planet and how something as simple as a single paper cut can communicate a lifetime of memory. Over the last 15 years, Béatrice’s philosophy of practice and her dedication to the art of paper cutting has seen her progress from life as a cleaning lady to life as an internationally exhibited artist. Through ‘keeping things simple’ she has created her own paper cut universe that speaks stories aloud and breathes tales of freedom, death, hope and possibilities for what could be. Paper Runway | 37

Lauren Clay Lauren Clay’s work draws you in from the moment your eyes hit the hundreds of brightly coloured strips of paper. Clay works primarily with cut paper, wire, wood and foam to form the elaborate stimulating sculptures. Each structure creates complexity in the brilliance of its construction.

Describe your studio / work space. Is it a laboratory / shed / treasure trove / secretive cave, tidy/chaotic or something else... My studio is functional, systematic experimental chaos. It is the home of painted paper scraps, rejected sculpture appendages, crystals, shelves of acrylic paint, and misused kitchen appliances. On the best days my studio is a place where I am surprised by what I find there. What do you love most about paper? I appreciate paper because it is so easily transformed. It has the ability to take on so many different persona. Most importantly, for my own work, it has the ability to be completely autonomous. Because my work often addresses elusive subject matter, such as spiritual, and psychological spaces, I appreciate paper’s ability to appear both solid and ephemeral, natural and supernatural; to be totally mundane, but also to seem completely foreign. With unlimited budget or geographic reach what is your ultimate art material/ materials? I always have fantasies of doing huge, complex, multi-room installations. I don’t think the material would change much, but definitely the scale and complexity would. How did you work with paper as a child? Do you remember what you first created with paper? I don’t remember having any extraordinary experiences with paper early on. I first began working with paper about nine years ago. I began using it as a support for my paintings, rather than stretched canvas, because I was interested in it as a conceptual framework for my work. At the time I thought paper evoked a feeling of something temporal and suggestive; like the feeling of a proposal, rather than something didactic or concrete. Although the way I use paper in my work has evolved physically, I think it has continued to reference these feelings of suggestion and passivity. I am also totally open to the idea that my work might not always incorporate paper. Paper Runway | 53

Thanks for joining us at Paper Runway. Tell us about Three Nations? Three Nations is a blog I started only a few months ago. The name simply reflects the three cultures (Australian, Croatian and Dutch) that make me who I am today, through my own family roots (Croatian) and my boyfriend’s family (Dutch). It is a place where I can be myself; documenting my work, personal projects and creative journey. Your blog is bursting with a love of photography and paper, what do you love most about what you do? Seeing my ideas come to life. I have kept a notebook of ideas for a number of years and now I am slowly ticking each of them off. It’s nice to not be restricted by one medium, especially because my passions and interests range from paper art to photography to event styling. No one ever said you had to choose one, so why not give it all a go if you love it? Which five words best describe you? Passionate, clumsy, imaginative, supportive, young-at-heart (That’s 3 in 1) How did you get your career start and what path have you taken since? Tell us a bit about your background I was born and raised in Australia, however, my parents, brother and sister were born in Croatia. I grew up in a fairly isolated town and found that creative pursuits weren’t popular or encouraged nearly as much as sports, such as netball or basketball. Thankfully my parents had built a beautiful home on five acres of land where I could run around, play amongst nature and have the freedom to

indulge in anything artistic. When year 12 was over, I moved to Melbourne only a few days after my last exam. I then went on to complete an arts degree, however, my career to date has been in product development and I have spent a large portion of that time working for kikki.K as a product manager. Late last year I hit a bit of a crossroad and started asking myself ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’. It is a strange question to ask yourself at the age of 28, but I realised that it is very natural for one to discover new interests or revisit old ones as time moves on. It is whether you choose to embrace them or not, I suppose. From a very young age I was determined, eager to learn and make something of myself and, although I am satisfied very much with what I have achieved so far, it wasn’t until recently that I really started to question where I was going. I looked back at my childhood (which sounds like a bit of a cliché, but it’s true) and I realised that the little me really seemed to be on to something all those years ago. I spent my time drawing, collecting stickers and stamps, painting, writing, making stationery, creating collages and constantly rearranging my parents’ home. So, here I am all these years later with the same interests and same passions. Essentially, I have left product development to be a child again – strange right? I guess I was naturally influenced by society to grow up, find an awesome fulltime job and eventually make lots of money, when in fact I should have just listened to my 10 year old self and said “I want to cut and paste when I grow up, so there!”

“Everybody loved Frank the Yank… Born in Minnesota, my Dad, Frank Osborn, joined the US Army in 1941, hoping to be discharged after a year. Instead he found himself – and his future – on the other side of the world. Dad met my mother, Rhona, at an officer’s graduation party in Brisbane. With the offer of chewing gum in exchange for her number, their love was sealed on a PK wrapper.

Last year when we went to Minnesota I could only imagine ‘what if?’. Dad only ever went back once but walking in his footsteps, we’ve uncovered extraordinary things. While war duty kept Mum and Dad apart, they were hastily married in 1945 when Dad’s supply ship was briefly docked in Sydney. It was 18 months before they would see each other again. On his discharge, Dad set about creating their new life in Minnesota, arranging for Mum to join him on the Brides’ Boat. But destiny had different plans. Mum fell gravely ill with appendicitis and couldn’t travel. On hearing the news, Dad set sail for a new life in Australia.
