George N. Kulles Honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1965, George Kulles completed his college education then served for thirty-one years as a teacher and administrator in the Chicago Public Schools. His interest in antiques led him to a secondary career conserving, appraising, writing and lecturing about antique paperweights. He has had five books published: two historical novels The Curse of the Imperial Paperweights, and Wheel of the God; Shards of the Assassin, and three books that assist the serious collector and serve as indispensable guides in identifying nineteenth and twentieth century paperweights: Identifying Antique Paperweights – Millefiori, Identifying Antique Paperweights – Lampwork, and Identifying Antique Paperweights – The Less Familiar. George is also an accomplished violinist, having played in several symphony orchestras. He is currently first violinist of the Allegro Quartet.

Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects

1 Exceptional and unique pair of antique Saint Louis crown paperweight bud vases. In each example, a slender flaring bowl engraved with pendant leaf swags rises from a band of facets, its rim finished with a spiralling ruby threaded torsade. Just below, a hollow bulb cut with slanted facets and collar supports the vessel, it in turn resting on a crown paperweight base with a blue and yellow center cane from which radiate twisted red, white and green ribbons alternating with interlaced spiralling white latticinio cascades. Saint Louis developed the crown weight and is the only French factory to have produced these pieces. —The Art of the Paperweight. Extremely minor surface wear. 2 Exceptional antique Clichy C scroll paperweight. At the center of the weight, a red pastry mold cane is ringed by nine green complex canes and then by a circle of thirteen white roses. Thirteen pink pastry mold canes ensue and finally a magnificent garland of six C scroll millefiori formations, each different from the next and including an edelweiss scroll, a moss ground scroll and a pink and green rose scroll. 3 3 Magnificent antique Saint Louis two-color crown paperweight. Bright yellow and brilliant blue spiraling ribbons alternate with white latticinio filigree twists, all cascading from a large center cane which begins with a red and white bull’s-eye cane, then moves to blue and white star canes and finishes with alternating pink and white canes. A trademark design from Saint Louis, the colors are eye-popping and unique to their origins. Diameter 3 3/16" $7,000—9,000

5 Very fine antique Baccarat magnum close packed millefiori paperweight. The unusually large piece contains dozens of assorted unusual and intricate complex millefiori, including sixpoint star, arrowhead, trefoil, quatrefoil, bull’s-eye, rod bundle, ruffle, fortress, floret, leaf and cog canes, in white and shades of blue, green, red and yellow. 4 4 Extremely rare antique Baccarat buttercup bouquet paperweight. An aqua colored buttercup presides at the center of this lovely bouquet, in the company of a blue and white primrose, a rare type II primrose and forget-me-nots in both red and white. A white bud peeks out from some of the lavish greenery and the flowers are all centered by white stardust canes with red bull’seye cores, or as in the case of the buttercup, a yellow star. 6 Extremely rare antique Saint Louis Maltese Cruciform eight-panelled carpet ground paperweight. One of only two known examples, the piece is centered by a large blue, green and white complex cane made of tubes, cogs and florets. Eight white cog canes with six-point star centers ring this central motif and from them eight radiating rows of the same canes depart, creating eight triangular panels. Each triangle is filled with a thick carpet of cog canes, alternating between pink and green. The twin to this weight sold at Sotheby’s in February 1980, lot 159A, for the then remarkable sum of 5,000 pounds sterling, the price of a substantial London home at the time. Small scratch to side and very minor wear to dome. Diameter 3 1/16" $20,000—25,000

7 Rare antique Mount Washington strawberry magnum paperweight. Five symmetrically placed large strawberries, each cradled within four splayed green sepals, are accompanied by four white strawberry blossoms similarly cradled by their sepals and symmetrically spaced, within a large, clear ground dome. “The weights are large, colorful and bold.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. “The motifs are very three-dimensional, almost tempting one to reach in and pluck a strawberry ...” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. 8 Rare antique Gillinder & Sons close concentric faceted paperweight. A large white ruffle cane with a yellow core is beautifully presented within four concentric rows of complex canes, each different from the next. The first ring is of white complex ruffle canes followed by a ring of larger crimped canes with dark blue centers. White cogs ensue and finally a lovely circle of pink cogs pulled down to form a stave basket. Small top facet and six vertical side printies. “Most of the better weights are customarily cut with a rather small printy on the top, and six tall, deeply cut, oval shaped printies on the side.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. 9 Antique Saint Louis crown paperweight toothpick holder. A pear-shaped upper vessel, the toothpick recipient, is made of vertically draped red and green lattimo twists, white-edged, in alternation with interlacing white latticinio ribbons. It sits atop a small clear pedestal which in turn rests atop a crown weight, it, too, made of red and green twists and white latticinio ribbons, this time all cascading from a six-point star and floret blue and white center cane. Nearly imperceptible surface wear. Diameter 2 7/16", height 4 3/16" $5,000—6,000 10 Rare antique Bacchus close concentric paperweight. Somewhat smaller than many Bacchus paperweights, the piece puts to

11 Very rare antique Saint Louis “1848” dated close concentric millefiori with dancing ladies and devils paperweight. A ruffled white collar frames a dancing ladies blue and white center cane which is then immediately ringed by seven green and white complex canes with dancing devil cores. A ring of salmon colored complex canes ensues, then white florets in ribbed white tubes. Cobalt blue complex canes with salmon centers and bull’seye cores follow and finally there is a circle of bright yellow. A central blue and white cane is ringed first by five lemon-colored canes with white cores and then by a ring of pink and white ruffled complex canes. A ring of pale green tubes ensues, each filled with a white complex cane, next comes another circle of pink and white ruffles, then white and chartreuse canes with blue cores, all cupped within a white stave basket culminating in salmon-colored rings with blue and white complex cane cores. “A limited palette is used, but in the brilliant way that Pointillist and Impressionist painters used their colors.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. 12 Antique Baccarat red and white buttercup paperweight. Five cupped white petals, with a nucleus of yellow stardust canes, display against six larger, flat, white-edged red petals. The bloom sits atop a curving stem shared by a companion bud and three leaves. Another four leaves crest the flower which is framed by a millefiori garland of alternating blue and white complex arrow canes and complex canes in green and white, over clear, star-cut ground. 13 Very rare antique Baccarat type II blue primrose miniature paperweight. A very rare design, this type II primrose is constructed with six deep translucent blue, jewel-like petals edged in white cog canes and with white arrows shooting into them from the nexus, a complex white star cane with a red bull’s-eye at its core. The flower sits atop a short, crooked stem flanked by two subtly shaded green leaves, another four spaced leaves crowning it, over clear ground. Diameter 2" $1,800—2,250

14 Rare antique Clichy turquoise chequer paperweight. A beautiful, rarely seen design, its carefully arranged turquoise latticinio tubes enclose individual millefiori complex canes in a sumptuous array. 17 Very rare antique Baccarat butterfly over two pompons paperweight. Unique, a white camomile blossom and a blue and white camomile blossom, each made of C canes and each with yellow cores, share a common forking stem flanked by two large and furling leaves at the bottom and four additional smaller leaves higher up. Above the blooms hovers an aubergine butterfly with calico wings, a blue and white millefiori complex cane at the center of each of the upper two. 16 Outstanding antique Saint Louis purple dahlia paperweight. The large blossom is composed of a goldenrod and blue cane center which is surrounded by five overlapping tiers of purple petals. The tips of five spaced green leaves protrude from under the flower, on clear, star-cut ground. 18 Antique Clichy spaced concentric millefiori on cobalt ground paperweight. A lovely design, it begins with a pink pastry mold center cane ringed by nine lime green cogs with pink tube cores. A circle of thirteen white roses ensues and finally a spaced outer garland of large green and white complex canes in alternation with pairs of smaller pink pastry mold canes. Cobalt blue ground. 19 Antique Baccarat close packed millefiori dated 1848 with Gridel silhouettes paperweight. The colorful assortment of millefiori canes includes four Gridel silhouettes of a squirrel, a rooster, a stork and a monkey, as well as examples of trefoil, quatrefoil, fortress, whorl, arrow, star, leaf and bundled rod canes. A pink and green rose presides at the center of five graceful concentric millefiori rings, each different in color and design from the next. 21 Rare antique Clichy scramble with partial signature paperweight. In the typically brilliant hues of the Clichy palette, whole and partial canes are toppled together, carefully, in a wonderful array of color and design. Stars, cogs, florets, bull’s-eye canes and more all contribute to a motif which bears the further intrigue of a partial signature, CLI, near the weight’s center. “Many times the Clichy signature is missing two or more letters, resulting in a partial alphabet signature.” —The Dictionary of Paperweight Signature Canes. 23 Very rare antique Saint Mandé Saint Michael sulphide paperweight. The white, winged sulphide of Saint Michael carrying a shield rests at the center of a low, clear ground dome and is framed by two concentric garlands of millefiori complex canes, the first red with blue and white elements and pink bull’s-eye cores, and the second blue with blue and white elements and pink bull’seye cores. 22 Antique Saint Louis jasper-panel spoke with silhouette canes paperweight. Eight white rod spokes emanate from a pink and white turban-swirl center to divide panels of alternating blue/ white and red/white jasper ground. Encircling the center and between each spoke are eight complex canes, four of which contain the unusual silhouettes of a white turkey. 25 Antique Saint Louis pansy on double-swirl latticinio miniature paperweight. An extremely rare weight, this lovely pansy has two viola-colored upper petals and three amber lower petals, striped and thickly rimmed in cobalt blue. The bloom is cupped by two green leaves flanking a short stem, and a fanciful looped stem with a small leaf as well as a leaf between the upper petals complete the design, which displays against a white double-swirl latticinio basket. Two rows of a delightful array of colorful canes in pink, thalo blue, turquoise, purple, pink and white surround a large pink and green Clichy rose, over clear ground. Minor bruise on side. A green pastry mold cane with a white core is the focus of three spaced consecutive rings of millefiori complex canes, each different from the next in both color and design. A white rose with a small maroon core is ringed by eight smaller pink and white roses, these with a yellow core. A very good example, the green and white lattimo ribbons in this piece spin counter-clockwise, originating at a large complex cane of four pink bull’s-eye canes alternating with four white floret canes, another cane in green and white at their core. In a classic chequer display, tube-like segments of white latticinio interlace to form single cells, each populated by a complex millefiori cane, no two of which are alike. A rich array of colors is represented as well as designs including bull’s-eye canes, florets, cogs, sawmills and more. A central purple and white complex cane with a tiny star core is ringed first by nine green pastry mold canes and next by thirteen somewhat larger pastry mold canes in pink. 343 Cape Cod Glass Works candy canes. A set of eleven candy canes in a cheerful array of colors includes latticinio twists, twisted ribbons and a splash of gold aventurine. Each cane is approximately 4 1/4 high and slyly hooked to hang neatly from a tree. 4 1/4" $250—300 344 Zellique Studio 2004 bird with a heart sculpture. Its head and body fashioned from slightly opaque clear ground, this sweet little bird has stylized red wings whose color reflects into other parts of the sculpture, depending on the lighting. Conditions of Sale Participants are urged to read carefully the following explanation of the conditions of sale, which contains the terms on which L.H. Selman Ltd. conducts auctions. Bidding Bids may be placed by mail, telephone, fax, e-mail or on the web at www.selman.com/auction. Your bid is a contract to purchase the lot at the hammer price, plus commission. Bidding will continue until all under bidders tell us they no longer wish to bid. In the case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will be considered the high bid. Payment Successful bidders will be invoiced for the total amount due at the auction’s close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Successful bidders pay a 20% commission on the hammer price of each item, plus applicable tax and shipping fees. Payment is due on receipt of invoice; after 15 days a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged. We accept all forms of payment, including electronic bank transfers. No additional surcharge will be applied for using credit cards. All checks must be drawn on U. S. banks. Purchases will not be shipped to the buyer until the full price has been paid. Shipping Domestic items are shipped via FedEx 3-Day service at a charge of $15 for the first paperweight, and $5 for each additional paperweight in the same shipment. Signature is required for delivery. Non U.S. items are shipped via Express Mail at a charge of $35 for the first paperweight; additional items in the same order will be charged at actual cost. Price of shipping/insurance for oversized items will vary according to size and weight. Alternate shipping methods may be available, if desired. Returns Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final. The buyer must notify L. H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt. All items have been carefully selected and described, but if you feel a lot has been misrepresented, requests for return will be handled on an individual basis. Returned merchandise will not be accepted without prior approval. In no event will L. H. Selman Ltd. incur liability beyond the purchase price of an individual lot.
