Important and rare antique Baccarat commemorative paperweight.  Over a number of years many examples of the “1858” commemorative paperweight have appeared at auction. Unfortunately, these were, without exception, copies. All were made by Baccarat subsequent to the visit of Maréchal-Canrobert to the Baccarat factory on April 21st, 1858. Only three were made for the occasion of the actual visit: one was presented to the Maréchal, one to the Lord Mayor of Baccarat and one was made for the director of the glassworks. All three have survived. Today one of the weights can be found at the Corning Museum of Glass, one is with the descendants of the glassworks director and the third is represented here. It was first seen by the public at auction as part of the great Maurice-Lindon Collection and is the only one of the trio available for sale today. It continues to bear a Maurice Lindon label.

Of exceptional quality, the weight is made from fairly large complex canes which form a closepack sitting atop a barely visible white upset muslin cushion. The canes include stars, cogs, trefoils, quatrefoils, bull’s-eyes, arrows, whorls and more, as well as one very prominent black horse silhouette on a white, blue-edged cane. The range of colors is typical of Baccarat, including reds, greens, white, touches of yellow and brilliant blues. Most significantly, the commemoration cane dominates the weight’s landscape; a twelve-point white cog rimmed in cobalt blue, it reads “BACCARAT 21 AVRIL 1858” in blue, underscored with blue laurel leaves. Excellent condition. Diameter 2 ¾" $70,000—80,000

The first ring of six canes includes a complex arrow cane, a rooster silhouette and the silhouettes of a shamrock, a dog and a horse. The outer ring silhouettes are of an elephant, a goat, a deer, a rooster, a moth and a dog, all set within a beautiful red and white stardust carpet. “B 1948” cane. 3 Rare antique Pantin patterned millefiori paperweight.  Often presumed to be early or late Clichy, weights like this one would seem instead to have originated with the Pantin factory. In fact, the Pantin factory came to perfect what we all know as the Clichy rose but differences are evident and the four roses in this weight depart clearly from the latter house. A large central white pastry mold cane, filled with white stars and a single blue one at its core, is the focus of a spaced ring of red, white and blue cogs, from which depart eight loops, four of them of white stardust complex canes, two of green cogs and two of cobalt blue star-filled tubes, all resting on a white upset muslin ground. See The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights by Paul M. Dunlop, page 155, Figure 227, P-705. Diameter 3 3/8" $10,000—15,000

4 Extremely rare antique Clichy spaced concentric magnum paperweight.  Centered by a large complex white star cane, five spaced concentric rings of varied complex canes cover a clear ground interior dome. The canes include cogs, pastry molds, stars and more, as well as one green and white rose with a pink core. Other colors are pink, red, cobalt and light blue. Of unusually copious proportions, this is a distinctive weight. From the George Kulles Collection. Chip to side of dome. Diameter 4 5/8" $7,000—9,000 Winter 2015

5 5 Outstanding and rare antique Baccarat “special pattern” paperweight.  This rare paperweight was selected from over three hundred examples for its superb quality and appearance to illustrate the brochure for the 25th anniversary of the Paperweight Collectors Circle that took place during the second week of November, 2006 at Olympia, London. A large, six-lobed, blue and white cane focuses inward first to a ring of green, then white, then seven tiny pink honeycomb canes and finally a red and white cog. Six ocher bull’s-eye complex canes fit within the exterior voids. It presides at the center of six identical circlets, actually in the form of unusually large complex canes, each with a dark green quatrefoil core set against white, then ringed in royal blue and finally twelve quatrefoils on white at the outer edge. Upset muslin ground. For an identical example, see “Antique French Paperweights” by Paul Jokelson, page 66, B81. To view the actual weight, see “Paperweight Collectors Circle 25th Anniversary Exhibition 1981-2006”, page 22, bottom left. Diameter 3 1/8" $18,000—20,000

7 Rare and exceptional antique Bohemian close concentric millefiori paperweight.  A cobalt blue and white complex center cane is ringed first by seven dusty rose complex canes composed with six point stars. Another ring of complex canes follows in teal and then a ring of seventeen pink Clichy-type roses, all garlanded by a circle of aqua. “Bohemia was well known for its millefiori decorated objects as early as the 1830s.” —The Art of the Paperweight. Diameter 2 15/16" $6,500—7,500 www.selman.com

6 6 Exceptionally rare and very fine antique Baccarat prancing horse faceted paperweight.  One of only nine known horse plaque examples and just two that are red, this is a very rare paperweight. A red intaglio carved horse stands with a lifted foreleg on a patch of ground that shows atop a white plaque. The plaque is rimmed with a red line and then framed by a garland of blue and white complex arrow canes in alternation with green-centered, white pastry mold canes. It floats within clear ground with a top facet and six round side facets. “Roughly a dozen classic period paperweights exist which use the cameo carving technique made famous by Bohemian, English, and later, French glassworks. Ten of these were made by Baccarat.” —Baccarat Paperweights; Two Centuries of Beauty, page 64. Diameter 3 1/8" $25,000—30,000

74 Paul Stankard 1999 botanical sculpture with flowers, bees, word canes and root people.  Suspended within barely discernable clear ground cells fused together to create a near square block sculpture, eight interpretations of flora remind us of the bounty and variety of nature. In one corner, luscious pink blooms entwine with a honeycomb and are visited by two bees; in other cells, clusters of red raspberries burst through a thicket of leaves and tendrils, exuberant sunflowers dazzle and writhe, elegant black and gold twisting pods splay to show us their fruit, blueberries lie in a mossy bed, apple blossoms beckon to a honeybee, pink trumpet flowers bud and bloom, and at the center, a column of twisting wood and moss is threaded with the figures of a male and female and the word cane “dew”. Each vision is both a miracle of nature and a miracle of the artistry which has captured it, as Stankard meticulously evokes a world both ripe and in decay, 20

opulent and stark, budding and going to seed. “I think of my work as referential,” says Stankard. “These are not literal flowers, though it is important to make them believable. The point of my work is not to make specimens but to evoke the experience of nature.” – Paul Stankard. “Paul J. Stankard is an internationally acclaimed artist and pioneer in the studio glass movement. He is considered a living master in the art of the paperweight, and his work is represented in more than 60 museums around the world.” —Corning Museum of Glass.
