Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1 Extremely rare antique Clichy spaced millefiori on white stardust carpet ground paperweight.  A central delicate pink and green Clichy rose centers the design, and is surrounded by two concentric rings of seventeen complex millefiori cane clusters. Each cluster is comprised of 26 different canes, in white and shades of pistachio green, pink and cobalt blue, each with a central white and blue floret-type cane, all nestled in a carpet of pristine white stardust canes. The arrangement rests within a basket of alternating green and white staves. This piece was shown at the Corning Museum of Glass in its exhibition titled Paperweights: “Flowers which clothe the meadows”, whose catalog states: “[Very few] ... stardust carpets are known from Clichy, and of these No. 95 [this example] is the subtlest and most delicate of fancies.” “Ten stardust grounds have been documented from Clichy.” —Paul H. Dunlop, Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. Exhibited: Corning, New York, The Corning Museum of Glass, April 29– October 21, 1978. Diameter 2-1/2" $19,000—25,000 1

2 Very rare antique Clichy pink and white convolvulus flower over clear ground paperweight.  A unique, dimensional white convolvulus flower. The corolla, with a pale pink outer lip graduating from white to pale pink and finally to a deep pink center, is presented in a frontal view rather than the more common profile. As such, this piece may be unique among the already rare Clichy convolvulus paperweights. A long graceful curved stem extends from realistic and dimensional green sepals which support the flower. A single dark green leaf, typical of the Clichy convolvulus paperweights, peeks out from behind the flower, which grows over clear ground. A large dew drop bubble rests amid the center of the corolla. Diameter 3" $18,000—22,000 312-583-1177

3 3 Extremely rare antique Saint Louis gilded salamander on blue and white jasper paperweight.  The salamander or lizard, realistically fashioned of blue and white jasper with gold gilding, is coiled on a base of blue and white jasper. This piece was no doubt inspired by a superstition held by early glassworkers that salamanders , who were able to withstand the heat of the furnace, lived in the factories’ furnaces. Glassworkers who suddenly disappeared (often by escaping their native country) were said to have been captured by the salamander. According to popular superstition, the salamander is said to have traveled to hell and back. “Part Victorian, part Rococo, part Empire Egyptian, the lizard weight is nevertheless a noble object.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3 3/8" $8,000—10,000

4 4 Extremely rare antique Baccarat paneled stardust carpet ground paperweight.  This exquisitely crafted paperweight with a six-looped design is composed of multiple concentric rings of salmon, white and emerald cog/shamrock canes, outlined in blue opal and salmon whorl/cog canes, set in a white stardust carpet. The Gridel silhouettes of a monkey, rooster, dog, goat, deer and a black monkey decorate the center of each outer loop. The design is centered by the factory’s trademark arrow/six-pointed star cane. “The remarkable six-looped garland in red, white and blue appears on a white stardust ground like a formal garden whose flowers are set in a ground of white pebbles.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3 1/16" $20,000—30,000

5 Rare antique Baccarat three-flower bouquet paperweight.  The bouquet consists of a double-tiered, blue-spotted, white wheatflower with a star cane center, a primrose with a red and white stardust/bull’s-eye cane center, and a Type III pansy with a red and white stardust/bull’s-eye cane center, along with a purple and yellow bud, on stems with spring green leaves over clear ground. Small crack in primrose petal. “Large multifloral bouquets were a specialty of Baccarat and displayed the highest degree of skill in lampwork and millefiori techniques.” —Baccarat: Paperweights and Related Glass, 1820—1860. “Nearly all examples of flat floral bouquets show paperweight making at its gayest and most exuberant, belying the Victorian reputation for the lugubrious.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. “People used the pansy as a subtle way to show support for Napoleon and the empire after he was deposed.” —The Art of the Paperweight – Challenging Tradition. 6 6 Outstanding antique Clichy concentric millefiori in stave basket paperweight.  A Clichy signature pink and green rose appears prominently at the center of seven close concentric rings of assorted complex canes, including pastry mold, cog, florets and crimp canes, in vivid shades of pink, green, powder blue, maroon and violet, as well as white. The arrangement rests in a basket of alternating green and white staves. Clichy-la-Garenne, the third of the “Big Three” influential cristalleries, was founded in 1838, and offered paperweights that can be dated to 1849. The factory proved to be bold in their use of rich glass colors, and readily entered the new flow of export, showing their crystal at London’s Crystal Palace in 1851 and at the New York Exhibition in 1853. Diameter 2 15/16" $12,000—18,000

8 Very rare antique Saint Louis plum paperweight.  Three large purple plums ripen on green stems hanging from a slender golden branch, with four green leaves, over clear ground. Rare among antique fruit weights, plums are seen only from Boston & Sandwich Glass, Pantin and Saint Louis. Collectors may have been especially attracted to glass objects containing purple such as the plum, since until the Victorian era purple was only worn by royalty, high clergy and the very wealthy. The unattainably expensive dye led to the color’s association with luxury and extravagance. Diameter 3 1/16" $5,000—7,000 4

7 7 Rare antique Baccarat dated six-point blue and white star carpet with Gridel canes paperweight.  A central salmon-pink, green and white butterfly cane is surrounded by three spaced concentric rings of assorted complex millefiori, including the Gridel silhouette canes of an elephant, a deer, a horse, a rooster, a squirrel, a swan and two dog canes, on a rarely seen carpet of blue on white six-point star canes. “B 1848” signature/date cane. The term “carpet” was first used to describe these paperweights in the Catalogue des Collections des Arts et Métiers (Paris, 1855). Diameter 2 13/16" $14,000—18,000

9 9 Antique, possibly Russian, purple aster on clear ground paperweight.  The three-dimensional flower is composed of several tiers of pointed purple petals, which radiate outward from a center of closely overlapping lavender petals. It grows atop a short green stem, with a single green leaf, over clear ground. 10 10 Rare antique Bacchus close concentric millefiori paperweight.  A large central crimson and white multi-ruffled cane encircled by five rings of complex canes including multi-ruffled, cog, cane bundles and pointed oak leaf, in pale violet, aquamarine, pale yellow, forest green, royal blue and white. An outer ring of white cog canes with hollow red centers is drawn down to form a basket. “Colors as intense as Baccarat’s (especially reds, thalo greens and cobalt blues) appear in a few weights, though for the most part the colors are more subtle, which I find quite refreshing. Although restricted by a somewhat limited palette, the Bacchus glassworkers used their colors in the brilliant way of pointillist and impressionist painters. The varying thickness of colored glass over a white base and the close proximity of various hues gives the impression of a large range of colors.” —Paul Hollister, The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3 5/16" $18,000—25,000

11 Antique Clichy C-scroll millefiori garlands on blue color ground paperweight.  A central arrangement of concentric complex canes, in white, pink, turquoise and red, is bordered by six C-shaped millefiori garlands which alternate between pink, green, and white on a translucent cobalt blue ground. A green and white complex cane rests inside the open ends of each of the garlands. “A unique version of the circular garland motif is found in Clichy ‘C-scroll’ paperweights. These garlands of canes, which are arranged in semi-circles resembling the letter ‘C’, are considered a signature of the Clichy factory.” —The Art of the Paperweight. Diameter 3 7/16" $12,000—18,000 Winter 2013

12 12 Antique Saint Louis concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade paperweight.  A small blue and white floret cane with a white serrated collar is ringed by red and white tube canes, white florets and a circle of blue complex canes. A row of white florets follows, then salmon-colored complex canes made from hollow tubes. Chartreuse cog canes with white star centers border the design and are pulled down to form the mushroom’s tapered stem, framed within a cobalt blue spiral-encased white chaplet bead torsade, over clear, star-cut ground. Diameter 3 1/4" $5,000—7,000

13 13 Uncommon antique Baccarat close pack with 1846 date cane.  The colorful arrangement consists of dozens of assorted complex canes, including arrowheads, honeycombs, star bundles, quatrefoils, six-point stars, whorls, cogs, green leaves and crosses in shades of blue, red, yellow and white. Also included is a “B 1846” signature/date cane. “‘Close’ millefiori refers to the close vertical packing together of the canes, like people in a dense crowd. The patchwork quilt of one hundred or one hundred and fifty canes in a close millefiori paperweight offers a sampling of many or most of the canes made by a factory, and treats the eye to an almost endless variety.” —Glass Paperweights of the NewYork Historical Society. Diameter 2 7/8" $4,500—6,500

14 Rare antique Baccarat spaced millefiori on blue ground with rose cane paperweight.  A colorful assortment of assorted complex canes, including cog, pastry-mold, star, ruffle and a central pink and green Clichy-type rose, as well as a pink flower portrait cane, on brilliant cobalt blue ground. “… Color grounds are rare in Baccarat.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. For a discussion of Clichy-like canes in Baccarat paperweights, see Paul H. Dunlop’s “The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights”, p. 243. Diameter 2 5/8" $5,000—7,000

Cane colors include green, brick-red, maroon, violet and white, and are divided by short segments of turquoise and white latticinio. “However, usually, the very large florets, including fine Clichy roses in various colors, stand out rich and bold against the white filigree, the ground’s opacity reinforced by parallel filigree rods placed beneath it.” — The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. 114 Barry Sautner “Orchid” insculpture diatreta paperweight.  A frosted glass orchid bloom, framed by two furling leaves, displays within a round, clear ground whose exterior parameters are a frosted glass intricately embellished with delicate diatreta cutting. Greek for “latticework”, diatreta carvings are created by removing glass from beneath the design and releasing forms, in this case flowers and leaves, from a vitreous mass while meticulously leaving behind a network of posts which bind the lattice to the original subject. Here, four pink orchids have been symmetrically arranged on the weight’s exterior, interrupted by three 26

pink-tinged white, drooping buds on one side and by two on the other. Stylized, criss-crossed green leaves weave the flowers and buds into a wreath garlanding the interior orchid. “Ancient diatreta, mainly a handful of Roman cage cups from the fourth century, are some of the most treasured masterpieces in the museums in which they reside. Sautner equaled the intricacy of these ancient pieces, and surpassed their beauty in many of his creations.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. Diameter 4 1/8", width 1 5/16" $6,000—8,000
