Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1

1 Rare antique Clichy rose, pansy and thistle bouquet paperweight. A large yellow-centered pink millefiori rose crowns a bouquet along with a sheathed companion bud. It is flanked to the left by a purple and pale yellow pansy, also with a companion bud, and on the right by a pair of rarely seen thistles, each fashioned from a long purple, pink and white complex cane and cupped by a thick green ring of spurs. Each flower tops a leafy green stem, gathered and tied with a narrow pink ribbon, over a clear ground. Similar arrangements of flowers are known, perhaps suggesting a commemoration of the alliance between England, Scotland and France during the 1853-1856 Crimea War. “A thoughtprovoking assembly of blossoms and buds by Clichy, simple at first glance, expresses unrequited love...The minute detail of buds with green sepals and stems, loosely tied with pink ribbon, make this an artful interpretation of a symbolic bouquet.” —Glass Paperweights in the Art Institute of Chicago. Featured on Antiques Roadshow season 24, episode 20, at the Yorkshire Museum, with Fergus Gambon, in 2012. A similar example was sold in LH Selman’s Auction 43 as lot 3. Fine condition. Diameter 3 1/4" $25,000—35,000

2 Rare and unique antique Clichy pink clematis paperweight. A stunning pink clematis blossom, with six variegated petals spaced by thin sepals, has an intricate center composed of an outer ring of nine mint green stamens that borders concentric blue-over-white toothed rings, which encircle a central complex red and white cane. The bloom grows on a long sinuous stem, shared with four leaves and a delicate pink bud. Clear ground. “Clichy was renowned for its inventive flower portrayals, no two of which are exactly alike.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. Pictured and discussed in the Daily Herald August 30, 2016, article “Meet the ‘Frankenstein’ of Pretty Paperweights”, by Burt Constable. Fine condition. Diameter 2 15/16" $8,000—10,000 2

An expertly crafted multi-tiered garnet-red rose is crowned by five shaded green leaves as it blooms atop a curved stem, with two additional leaves, over a clear, star-cut ground. Describing the rare Baccarat rose, Paul Hollister wrote, “The realistic features of these three-dimensional flowers are the way the petals remain closed in the center, suggesting a half-opened flower, and the lovely rose coloring, which ranges from softest pink to dusty velvet red.” Diameter 2 1/2" $5,000—7,000

9 Extremely rare and very fine antique Clichy scrambled millefiori and signature cane paperweight. An array of whole and partial complex canes, such as ruffles, stars, cogs, florets, bull’s-eyes and a bit of rose, flaunts the factory’s spectacular use of colors and is boldly declared their own by a large and complete “CLICHY” signature cane. A generous layer of clear glass magnifies the details unabashedly. “The full “Clichy” signature is quite rare and always appears in the same millefiori cane format and colors, perhaps because only one cane was pulled for it.” —The Dictionary of Paperweight Signature Canes “...cobalt blue is used sparingly, and opaque pink, brilliant deep aquamarine or medium thalo blue (not turquoise), warm cadmium green, ivory, lilac, and deep ruby or deep cherry red are seen in abundance, giving the weights a warmth and richness not found elsewhere. If Baccarat paperweights appear to be seen in shade, Clichy seem to be always in broad sunlight.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3 3/16" $12,000—16,000

10 Antique Clichy close packed millefiori, roses and signature cane paperweight. 120 Barry Sautner (2008) “Striving Nirvana” men and angel carved sculpture. A frosted clear glass man, sculpted with impeccable detail, kneels and prays beneath detachable golden wings, with layers of feathers, on a platform held up by the hands and shoulders of three male figures. The men intertwine and strain to hold the platform, displaying their detailed features and muscles, as they rise from a base of carved white marble clouds. Sautner experimented with glass for nearly 40 years before creating this complex work, which he completed the year before his death. The largely self-taught Sautner coaxed and teased sublime contours and details into existence in this masterwork. The sculpture is a monument to human aspiration and an astounding offering from a celebrated artist who accepted no limitations. It reaches back into the history of art, honors tradition, pulls it forward and does it one better. In his career, Sautner raised bas-relief cameo, diatreta and sand-blasted carving to new levels of quality and complexity. He invented the acclaimed technique known as insculpture. Collector and patron, Mrs. Juliette Rakow, wrote in the 1989 PCA Bulletin, “[i]t is evident that Barry’s three-dimensional approach to cameo glass and paperweight carving results in such striking realism that all that went before appears to be nearly flat.” Excellent condition.
