Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1
1 Very rare antique Saint Louis two-colored crown newel post. Astonishing and grand, fifteen tightly-coiled twists of red and green ribbon, with a thin white line, are perfectly spaced by white double-swirl ribbons of four filaments each. The very fine and detailed canes cascade down a hollow interior from a large millefiori at the apex, which is composed of a pink and white-collared floret encircled by blue and white stars, inside a ring of pink and white tubes. The resulting regal crown is encased in a layer of clear glass and perfectly placed on a clear stem over a brass foot. Similar objects, with paperweight elements, were designed to adorn the ends of staircase handrails for a dramatic effect. Antique glassworks rarely produced them and not often with such precision and attention to detail. Good condition. Diameter 4 1/8" $15,000—20,000 2
2 Rare antique Baccarat 1848 scattered millefiori and Gridel silhouettes magnum paperweight. A central Gridel moth, or butterfly, silhouette cane is surrounded by numerous assorted complex canes including a “blue flax” flower silhouette cane, a love bird cane and the Gridel silhouette canes of a horse, a deer, a dog, a goat, a rooster, a squirrel, a white monkey, a hunter and a pelican, on a cushion of white upset muslin and colored filigree. A ring of diamond cutting encircles the perimeter of the base. Signature/ date cane. “The moth cane most often appears in or near the center of the motif. The separation of the large canes gives them a breathing space they do not have in the close millefiori and makes their colors look as bright as Clichy.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3 3/4" $7,000—10,000 2
