Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1
1 Rare antique Clichy spaced millefiori and roses on moss ground paperweight. Nineteen millefiori, each different from the next, include one white rose and a pair of iconic pink and green roses that flanks a surprising hidden rose complex cane. The colorful display is spaced on a carpet of green rod bundle moss canes, of which each section is dotted with a red-centered white floret. “The ground of green moss dotted with stars and florets recalls the most charming of French Touraine tapestries of the XVIth century. It does not seem possible to achieve a higher expression of art on the road of paperweight making.” —French Crystal Paperweights. “The most sought after, and undoubtedly the most striking, spaced millefiori are the moss green carpet grounds. The prize possessions of a few advanced collectors, these weights feature a ground of many small green canes contrasting jubilantly with the colorful spaced florets.” —Paperweights for Collectors. Good condition. Diameter 3 1/16" $10,000—15,000 2

2 Very rare antique Russian dahlia bouquet pedestal faceted paperweight. Three large multitiered dahlias are arranged on mint-green stems with leaves and three companion buds, each enrobed in a cup of curling green sepals, all tied together by a crimped yellow ribbon near the base of the stems. Two dahlias, one white and one pink, have progressively rising tiers of petals around green-cored yellow filament cane centers, while the third dahlia has green-dotted diaphanous yellow petals that have just started to reveal a bounty of pink stamens. The bouquet floats above a white ground. Eight rectangular side facets and a top octagonal facet add interest to a cylindrical dome, which sits atop a clear, hendecagon footed base. “These paperweights rank among the most beautiful and sophisticated in the genre.” — Paperweights: Collection Friedrich Bader, Wiener Kunst Auktionen. For similar examples of both lampwork and cutting, see 1992 PCA Bulletin, pages 12 and 13, and Fine British & European Glass & Paperweights, Bonham’s auction catalog, November 30, 2011, pages 74-89. Restored to excellent condition with typical internal flaw. Diameter 3 3/4", height 2 13/16" $16,000—20,000 Winter 2021

A quartet of dimensional dewy blossoms are strung on a green stem, spun into a circular garland with crenulated green leaves. The flowers consist of tiers of cascading pointed petals in blue, yellow and pink, while a fourth flower has striking blue-striped pink petals. Each flower has an aventurine-pollen filled center, with the exception of the pink and blue flower that has a ring of five yellow stamens around a yellow match-head at its core. Clear ground. The bouquet was famously pictured and its provenance discussed in the 1992 PCA Bulletin, page 5, as previously belonging to a family collection spanning three generations. Also pictured and discussed in the 2011 PCA Bulletin, page 63. Previously sold in Bonhams, Fine Paperweights from the Collection of the late Baroness de Bellet, London, May 19, 2010, as lot 62. Excellent condition. Diameter 3 13/16" $25,000—30,000

7 Rare antique New England Glass Company buttercup and millefiori garland paperweight. A yellow and white buttercup is haloed by six green leaves and sits atop a short stem shared by two flanking leaves and a sheathed companion bud. A garland of contrasting complex millefiori, including six running rabbit silhouettes and one bee picture cane, frames the design. Clear, fancy-cut chair caning-patterned ground. “The New England Glass Company receives top honors for producing the buttercup paperweight, one of this factory’s rarer offerings.” —The Boston & Sandwich and New England Glass Companies. Pictured and discussed on pages 32 and 96 of The New England Glass Company. Good condition with wear to base. Diameter 2 15/16" $5,000—8,000 8 Rare antique Saint Louis upright bouquet encased faceted overlay paperweight. A cobalt blue double-tiered clematis flower, with a yellow match-head center, rises upward at the center of three millefiori buds, spaced by five-petalled flowers, one orange, one red and one white. The flowers are gathered into a bouquet with radial serrated green leaves. Clear encased blue-over-white double overlay with six and one facets. Clear, star-cut ground. “Encased double overlays, however, are a remarkable achievement on any terms. The inner overlaid paperweight had to be annealed and, when cold, faceted like any other overlay weight, often more elaborately. Then the overlaid weight had to be reheated so that an outer covering of clear glass would adhere without cracking the original weight. When one considers the overlay design requirements... it is no wonder these intricate weights are much sought after and very expensive to acquire.” —Paperweights: Flowers Which Clothe the Meadows.
