Part I: Antique Paperweights & Related Objects Like designers in other mediums, glass stylists borrowed from everywhere: from Etruscan vases, from Bohemia, from chancels, chalices, and armored helmets, from Venice and Turkey, and from each other. They seemed to want to prove that glass could imitate any other material. . ..But paper weight makers succumbed to none o f these excesses. — Paul Hollister
1. • Antique Saint Louis magnum upright bouquet paperweight. A large faceted globe magnifies a dense bouquet comprising several salmon-pink and blue flowers within sever al green leaves. The size of this work suggests its origin, per haps, as a newel post for which the factory of Saint Louis was well-known. “Starting in 1829 Saint Louis once again appeared at the Exhibition of French Industrial Finished Products, where it gradually began showing articles which heralded the paper weights to come: colored crystal, filigrees, opalines and other fantasy pieces in crystal. Saint Louis seemed quite obviously suited to making paperweights. .. .(They) also made doorknobs or newel posts like millefiori balls or flower weights. Letters from Launay, the commercial correspondent in Paris, mention them as early as October 1848.” -Edith Mannoni, Classic French Paperweights. [Sotheby’s London, Nov. 1995, Sale #LN5676, “English and Continental Ceramics and Glass,” Lot 441; also exhibited at Spinks, June 1982, No. 144.] Height 4 1/8", Diameter 4". $8000-12,000
2. • Antique Clichy faceted concentric millefiori mush room paperweight. The vivid tuft is formed with four rows of millefiori, including a row of seven green and white rose canes, which show off their snowy petals alongside dark violet pastry mold canes. To the delight of Clichy collectors, this design includes a row of eleven rare green roses, which enclose the cen tral large pink and green rose cane. The mushroom stem is formed by alternating elongated pink and white staves; with six and one faceting, star-cut base, and painted in red enamel with accession number 1965.107. Some wear along the facets. [Sotheby’s New York, Jan. 1995, Sale #6656, “Important Paperweights Property of the New-York Historical Society,” Lot 210.] See Glass Paperweights o f the New-York Historical Society , p. 39, color plate 21. Diameter 2 13/16". $10,000-12,000 — Provenance: The Sinclair Collection, New Hampshire

3. Antique Bacchus concentric millefiori paperweight, with central bundle of pink-lined white canes, encircled by rings of canes in red, blue, yellow and white, on “sodden-snow ground.” The effect of the predominantly white colored glass gives the darker colored glass a punched-out, graphic detail, which makes the design so appealing. The Bacchus paper weights are intrinsically different from the mosaic effects of their European counterparts, and scarce. “...(S)omeone aptly called it ‘sodden-snow’. Closer inspection shows it to be not a ground at all, but an arrangement of thick rings like cotton wadding set tangent to, and blending with, one another. One can see down into the gaps among the clusters as if the canes were intaglios...” —Paul Hollister, The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. “Compared to the output of the French glass works of Clichy, Baccarat and Saint Louis, the Bacchus pro duction was very limited, possibly four hundred or so in total.” —Robert Hall, Old English Paperweights. “The glassworks, which initially specialized in domestic glassware and plate glass, began experimenting with fancy Venetian-style glass and paper weights in the 1840s. ‘Letter weights’ as they were called, were never more than a minute part of the company’s production.” -Lawrence Selman, The Art o f the Paperweight. Diameter 3 1/2”. $8300-12,000

4. Antique Baccarat floral bouquet paperweight with a pink “thousand-petal” rose, a black-spotted yellow wheatflower, pansy, blue and white primrose, buds and green leaves on clear ground. This well-centered, formal, floral design rep resents the mature works of Baccarat’s artisans during the Classic era, ca. 1845-35. A version of this bouquet can be seen on a company watercolor design sheet from that period, but this may be a unique paperweight. The delicate markings on the lower three pansy petals, the careful placement and shading in the dimensional rose, and the slight crimps at the leaves’ edges, which suggest veining, are all trademarks of the top glass producer of the Victorian period. In creating such fantasy arrangements under crystal, the cristalleries celebrated the inef fable language of flowers with their multi-petaled and many layered meanings. -See Glass Paperweights: The Art Institute o f Chicago, p. 19; also, Paperweights: Elowers which clothe the mead ows, p. 75. Diameter 3". $15,000-25,000 — Provenance: Collection o f Arthur Rublojf.

5. • Antique Pantin crimson-tinted rose paperweight on opaque white ground with one crimson bud, in a dimen sional portrayal displaying numerous shaded crimson-to-pink petals, enclosing yellow stamens, inside four well-made, but obscured mint green sepals, set low on a blunt stalk with five broad leaves, colored in an aqua overlay. The flower appears suspended above the milk-white ground. Scholars commonly classify a group of paperweights exhibiting qualities similar to this one as Pantin, but definitive attribution may allude some designs. “Wherever they were made they are Victorian work manship at its best.” -Paul Hollister, Glass Paperweights o f the New-York Historical Society. “It seems to me that Pantin has become the attribution for all paperweights that look excellent, but to which the labels Clichy, Saint Louis or Baccarat can under no circumstances be attached.” -Sibylle Jargstorf, Paperweights. See Antique Glass Paperweights from France, p. 64; The Art o f the Paperweight, pp. 45-46; A Collectors Guide to Paperweights, p. 54; The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights, pp. 148-150; Paperweight Collectors Association Bulletin, 1965, 1981, 1985. Diameter 3". $4500-6000
6. • Antique French rose colorground paperweight, possibly Pantin, the clear glass set with a dimensional flower composed with an abundance of blush-pink overlapping petals enfolding a yellow stamen center, growing from a curved green stem, with four aquamarine leaves at its bottom, and three top leaves in mixed shades of green, set on an opaque white ground. According to Paul Hollister, the Exposition Universelle of 1878 in Paris, created a paperweight revival and the focus was on three-dimensional designs, which suggests that this paperweight may have been made at that time. Painted in red enamel with accession number 1965.379. [Sotheby’s New York, Jan. 1995, Sale #6656 “Important Paperweights Property of the New-York Historical Society,” Lot 192.] -See Glass Paperweights o f the New-York Historical Society , p. 64, color plate 46). 7. • Unusual antique French flower paperweight, possi bly Pantin or Saint Louis, a flower set in clear crystal, with three rows of white, ribbed, overlapping, recessed petals, and a yellow stamen center, growing from a moss-green curved stem with five green leaves. The formation of these leaves resembles the characteristics of the paperweights attributed to the Pantin factory, yet the flower’s arrangement recalls Saint Louis-style. The Pantin attribution is not as well substantiated as other French factories, partially because this glasshouse produced so few paperweights. “Though probably operating after what is generally considered as the classic period of French production, Pantin is justifiably famous for its rare and startling lampwork designs.” -Sara Rossi, A C ollectors Guide to Paperweights. Painted in red enamel with accession number 1965.75. Minor chip. [Sotheby’s New York, Jan. 1995, Sale #6656, “Important Paperweights Property of the New York Flistorical Society,” Lot 197.] See Glass Paperweights o f the New-York Historical Society, p. 66, color plate 48. Diameter 2 13/16". $3500-4500
8. Antique Pantin two-flower paperweight, displaying a naturalistically colored pansy and a plump, pink companion flower, on two stems with five green leaves, four of which show serrated edges. The colors in the pansy are not bright, but they appear to blend as if the artist was modeling his glass after a watercolor. In nineteenth-century France, the pansy was given to express “tender thoughts,” yet was also used as a subtle sign that showed support for the deposed emperor, Napoleon. Paired as it is, however, with the pert, pink flower, it would suggest a more prosaic and less political design was intended. “(R)ealistic detail seems most typical of this factory.” -Sara Rossi, A Collector's Guide to Paperweights. [Christie’s Monaco, June 2001, Sale #1034, Lot 126.] Diameter 3 1/8". $4500-6000

9. Antique Bacchus close packed millefiori mushroom paperweight, including star, flower and ruffle canes, encircled by a red and white torsade. “The colors of Bacchus canes have been described as pallid’ and ‘muted’ pastels, but occasionally one will be seen with deep blues and reds. The variety and com plexity of the canes and the arrangements more than make up for the lack of color depth of the canes. Some very unusual col ors have appeared in several Bacchus paperweights, including pale fluorescent green, lilacs and lavenders, pistachio green, and pale yellow. The blending of the pastel colors has been arranged very sympathetically in most cases, with the colors gently drift ing into and not contrasting with their neighbors.” -O ld English Paperweights. [Sotheby’s New York, Jan. 1995, Sale #6656, “Important Paperweights Property of the New-York Historical Society,” Lot 200.] Diameter 3 1/8". $6000-8000 10. • Antique Bacchus concentric millefiori paperweight, the clear glass set with three rows of large millefiori canes with in a stave basket of elongated white cogwheel canes lined in green;painted in red enamel with accession number 1965.303. Chips and holes in center of base. -See Glass Paperweights o f the New-York Historical Society , p. 108, color plate 90. Diameter 3 3/8". $5000-6500 — Provenance: The Sinclair Collection, New Hampshire

12. Antique Apsley Pellat demi-parure sulphide necklace and earrings (ca. 1850), the portrait profiles on lilac ground, enclosed in gold and enamel mountings. A demi-parure is a matching set of jewelry, usually containing a necklace, earrings, and a pin. While the portraits have not been identified, they are clearly images of a family, or related persons, dressed in a Roman manner. Having written about his own “invention” of the sulphide process in Curiousities o f Glass Making (London, 1849), Pellat’s self-promotional techniques were well-known. His purpose in making a difficult demi-parure ensemble, (no other complete examples have surfaced) may have been as an elaborate advertisement of his skills, intended for his spouse to wear at social occasions, to garner interest in his glass and more commissions. The necklace chain and some earring filigree has detached. —See Sulphides, fig. 1; also, The Jokelson Collection o f Antique Cameo Incrustation, p. 96. Dimensions: chain length 17 7/8", earrings 2 15/16". $ 10, 000- 15,000

Walsh-Walsh “1848” concentric millefiori paper weight (ca. 1930), previously attributed to the antique English glasshouse of Whitefriars. Unusually shaped canes (including the “seven and six” canes known to British collectors), arranged without a discernible pattern, encircle each other in seven rows, surrounding the central cog and plump rod canes in white. The other colors range from light blue and pink, to dark cobalt blue and red colors, with accents of greens, yellows, and orange tint. Date canes embedded in one of the rows declare “1848”, which is likely spurious, but may have been intended as an homage to the Classic era, rather than outright fraud. “Walsh decorative glass and tableware developed over many years from the experience and expertise of previous generations with the Walsh legacy being that of an enlightened firm which
produced glass of a fine pedigree. Because of the lack of docu mentary evidence and records, little has been known hitherto about this company. 119. Antique Baccarat crystal tumbler, with enamel-on-gold foil inclusion of a messenger pigeon, carrying a letter. Presumably made at the height of the epistolary era, the letter was a love note or poem, and the tumbler inspired passionate correspondence. “The art of cameo incrustation, that is, encas ing an object within glass, has been in existence to some extent since ancient times, although the earliest examples involved only a partial enclosure of the ornament. It was not until 1750 that the technique of completely encasing an object was attempted by a Bohemian manufacturer. ...These tumblers were produced as gifts for special events: when a child was born he received a tumbler with a sulphide or enamel medallion of the Saint he or she was named after. The tumblers with medals were given to persons who had received these same decorations, and quite often their initials were engraved in the back of the glass. The tumblers were often placed in leather presentation boxes. Most of the cameo incrustations are closely related to historical events and famous persons, which give them a special appeal to collectors. They were also used as objects of political propaganda by Monarchy, Royalty and the French Republic.” —Paul Jokelson, foreword from The Paul Jokelson Collection o f Baccarat Antique Tumblers 1810-1860, Baccarat brochure. Signed and dated, from a limited edition of 10. Diameter 3 1/4”. (PG314) $900-2000 The Paperweight Museum is the fruit of our personal love for paperweights. All the effort that went into the creation of our new museum space comes from our personal passion for the art form. Our museum is different from other museums around the country, in that its only focus is paperweights. The sole mis sion of the paperweight museum is to see that paperweights receive the recognition and representation they deserve in the art world. We have created a place for scholarly learning where curators and experienced collectors can share knowledge and insights about this special art. We have also created a welcom ing space, where anyone from any walk of life, from students, to future glass artists, can visit and become inspired about this glass art.
know our museum is small, but we are very proud of the dream we have started to cultivate. As our endowment grows, we hope to eventually purchase an independent building to house the museums collection. The International Paperweight Society Foundation is a desig nated 301 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Unlike other muse ums, the Paperweight Museum does not currently have an endowment to support it for generations to come. We rely on the generosity of paperweight enthusiasts from around the world to aid in the acquisition of pieces for our permanent col lections and to help pay for operating costs.
