Part I: Antique Paperweights & Related Objects “The paperw eight form is one o f nearly perfect circularity that contains the most complex o f designs y et translates the simplest o f designs into infinity. . . these crystal balls contain both the questions and the answers. In their won derful size relationship to the human hand, their heavy shape and shaped weight, their brilliance y et delicacy, glass paperweights o f the classic p eriod are truly the crown jew els o f collecting. ” —Paul Hollister

1. Antique Saint Louis marbrie paperweight, with a central cluster of complex millefiori, surrounded by a pat tern of four sections of spaced turquoise blue loops, on an opaque white surface. This very rare type of weight was made almost exclusively by Saint Louis and not many are known. The term marbrie is derived from the French word for marble. It was most likely chosen to describe the effect the glass artisans achieved with this design. The festooned marbrie design is believed to have been derived from an Old English decorative practice of displaying what were known as witch balls. Witch balls were hollow, blown, glass balls hung by the superstitious in their doorways to ward off evil spirits. See Antique Glass Paperweights from France, plate 9, ill. 73. Also see Glass Paperweights in The Art Institute o f Chicago, p. 35; Glass Paperweights o f The Bergstrom-M ahler Museum, plate 34, ill. 467; Glass Paperweights o f the New York Historical Society , plate 16, ill. center left and bottom right. Diameter 2 13/16". $7000-10,000 2. Antique Clichy bouquet paperweight, with five millefiori-centered lampwork flowers, including a white double clematis, a pink double clematis, three small blue flowers, buds, dark green leaves, and stems, which are tied with a pink ribbon, over clear ground. (Minor chips). Clichy produced far fewer bouquets than their competi tors. This exceptional design makes the most of blending millefiori (the stamen), crimped glass (the leaves), and lampwork (the pleated petals) in an orchestrated arrange ment of flowers. A variety of these rare bouquets were gathered for the famous 1978 exhibition at The Corning Museum of Glass. For illustrations of Clichy bouquets from the exhibition, see Paperweights: Flowers which clothe the meadows , p. 77, ills. 141, 144, 148-50. Diameter 3 1/16". $12,000-18,000

Antique Baccarat dated ch o u fle u r carpet-ground paperweight, with scattered complex millefiori, including a “B 1848” signature/date cane, a flower portrait cane, and Gridel silhouettes of a goat, rooster, horse, elephant, deer, two dogs and two butterflies, on a white carpet ground. “Carpets formed of sparkling white stardust canes make brilliant settings in which the colored canes stand out like gems.” — Paperweights:

Flowers which clothe the meadows. Diameter 3 1/8M.

3. Antique Saint Louis signed concentric millefiori paperweight, composed of five rows of assorted complex canes, surrounding a large central periwinkle and white silhou ette cane of a dog, with a dancing figure above its back. Large “SL” signature cane. Extremely rare “dog and rider” silhouette cane. “Silhouette canes are those whose cross-sections bear the likeness of minute animals, plants or human figures in profile. These canes, simplistic renderings of reality, are whimsical reminders of childhood, and they boldly stand out among the other close packed and abstractly designed millefiori canes. Some of the modern Saint Louis silhouettes are a dancing man, 4

5. Antique Baccarat dated scattered millefiori ch o u fleu r carpet-ground paperweight, with a “B 1848” signature/date cane and assorted complex canes, including Gridel silhouettes of a deer, horse, goat, butterfly, rooster, pelican, pigeon and dog, on a carpet of green, red and white complex star canes, over white upset muslin, with bits of filigree. “Silhouette canes, because of technical limitations and size are necessarily sim plistic and childlike. Another reason for the naive charm of Baccarat silhouettes is that they were actually based on designs created by a child. Joseph Emile Gridel, the nine-year-old nephew of Baccarat manager Jean-Baptiste Toussaint, set out in 1847 on a simple project — he cut out eighteen different ani mals he had drawn and was pasting them onto paper when his uncle spotted them. The cut-out designs eventually became models for silhouette cane molds and, in 1848, M. Toussaint was able to give his budding young artist a paperweight con taining 15 of the animals as a reward for supplying the draw ings.” — Paperweights fo r Collectors, p.44. Diameter 2 3/4". $9000-12,000

6. Antique Baccarat patterned millefiori shamrock and butterfly paperweight, containing four rows of complex canes around a central claret-colored cog cane. The center design is composed of claret and white millefiori, including a ring of seven green shamrocks framed in opaque white, with an outer circle of cobalt blue, white and red arrowhead canes. A spaced garland of single butterfly silhouette canes rings the edge, all of it resting on tumbled, white latticinio. The six rarely seen shamrocks are quite large, as are the butterfly or “moth” canes around the perimeter. “These are weights of power and impact, whose design must have taken considerable thought.” — The

Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3 1/16".

$4000-3000

7. Antique Clichy quatrefoil garland colorground paper weight, with four large pink roses. The design is composed of a central pink, green and white complex pastry mold cane, sur rounded by four spaced pink and green “Clichy rose” canes, encircled by a quatrefoil garland of red, green and white canes, with four, spaced, white star/bull’s-eye complex canes at the periphery, on opaque blue ground. “Whether woven to cele brate love, victory or merely beauty, the millefiori garlands found in patterned spacing schemes are among the most grace ful and delicate ornaments found in paperweights.” — Paperweights fo r Collectors. Diameter 3 1/16". $7000-9000 8. Antique Clichy blue overlay millefiori mushroom paperweight, with a concentric millefiori mushroom, contain ing one ring of seven pink and green rose canes, and one ring of white rose canes, alternating with blue cogs, in a white stave basket, over grid-cut ground. Blue-over-white double overlay with five and one facets. “In these weights a group of millefiori canes is pulled into a tuft’ that has an elongated stem and

spreads into a mushroom shape near the crown of the weight. The top of the mushroom is usually in a close concentric or close packed millefiori arrangement. Clichy mushrooms gener ally appear in overlay weights, although there are some excep tions. In these pieces the top facet is flat rather than concave and the base is usually fancifully cut.” — The Art o f the Paperweight , p. 88. Diameter 3". $8000-10,000

10. Antique Baccarat dated blue carpet ground with scat tered millefiori paperweight, composed of assorted complex canes, including Gridel silhouettes of a butterfly, dog, deer, goat and swan, and a “B 1848” signature/date cane, on a car pet of cobalt blue and white canes. The term “carpet” was first used to describe these weights in the Catalogue des Collections des Arts et Metiers (Paris, 1855). “Carpetgrounds, usually asso ciated with clustered paperweight designs, are among the most appealing foils for colored and silhouette canes.” — Paperweights: Flowers which clothe the meadows. “...The carpetgrounds most prized by connoisseurs are the tightly packed miniature canes in combinations of colors such as blue and white.” — Paperweights

and Other Glass Curiosities. Diameter 3 1/16".

9. Antique Clichy pansy and bud paperweight. The flower, composed of two, large, yellow-rimmed, dark purple upper petals, and three, smaller, pale yellow lower petals, grows on a stem with a purple bud and dark green leaves, over clear ground. An almost imperceptible green glass rod, commonly used to attribute this type of weight, can be seen in the center of the flower. “No two are more than superficially alike; some look like pansies, some look like the viola, some look just plain tipsy. Seldom seen alone, they are usually combined with other

11. Antique Bacchus pink and white carpet-ground paper weight, with a large white and green ruffle cane, encircled by a white collar, at the center of a carpet of dark pink and white ruffle canes, within a white stave basket. “Compared to the output of the French glass works of Clichy, Baccarat and St. Louis, the Bacchus production was very limited, possibly only four hundred or so in total.” — Old English Paperweights , p. 14. “Carpet grounds are quite rare from the Bacchus works and only three or four are known” — Old English Paperweights , p. 61 (also see similar, but white-carpeted piece pictured on p. 61). 12. Antique Russian upright dahlia bouquet paperweight, with a central, multi-petal pink flower, encircled by a spaced ring of small cobalt blue flowers, and a border ring of pink, blue and yellow flowers, on white ground; flat top, with side panel facets. As the genealogy of Russian paperweight produc tion begins to take shape (See “The Malstov Dynasty of Russia”, Annual Bulletin o f the PCA, 1995), one of the more interesting questions is one of cultural influence: Were the Russian artisans fully aware of the work of the leading European glass factories in the classic paperweight period, or were they creating in a cultural vacuum? One view states, “Botanical motifs were in part inspired by European design... but the St. Petersburg Botanical Gardens were also studied, as were the sumptuous albums illustrating diverse plants from around the world that the state-owned factories purchased as resources for their designers.” — Objects o f Fantasy: Glass Inclusions o f the Nineteenth Century , p. 155. Diameter 3 1/8". $5500-7000 13. Antique Saint Louis faceted bouquet paperweight, with a dark purple and amber pansy, a pink pompon, a dark red bud, green leaves and stems, on a double-swirl white latticinio cushion. Six and one facets. Diameter 3 1/8". $5000-6500 14. Antique Saint Louis two-flower bouquet paperweight, with a purple and dark yellow pansy, a white flower, two green leaves and stems, over clear, diamond-cut ground. The leaves and flower stems come together in a bit of a twist, which is associated with Saint Louis floral lampwork. This duo may have been worn on the lapels and shawls of supporters of

Napoleon —a quiet floral statement of solidarity with the deposed Emperor. Because of all the Napoleonic interest in vio lets, France became a leader in developing and cultivating new varieties of violets and pansies. “Pansy,” in fact, comes from the French pensee , meaning “thought or sentiment.” Diameter 2 15/16". $2750-3500

15. Antique Saint Louis faceted cherries paperweight, with two red cherries and green leaves, on a light brown stem, over clear ground. All-over honeycomb facets. “...Most cherry weights come with two cherry-sized cherries on stems in clear glass. The various faceting treatments give the illusion of fifty or more cherries on a bough. This is imaginative paperweight making.” — The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights , p. 113. Diameter 2 3/4". $3750-4500

thin rods symbolizing pistil and anthers that appear to have been assembled much as other canes are assembled.. .The proof that these are canes is furnished by weights containing more than two roses of the same color, for here we can see the repe tition of identical petal patterns that mean the roses were snipped from one cane.” — The E ncyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights , p. 126. 304. Barry Sautner 1996 “Sammy” goblet, with the frosted crystal cup carved to resemble a ball of string, which is held in the paws of a brown cat, carved from tigers eye. This playful design, an example of the artist’s “sand-carving” technique, is a testament to his classic aesthetics and deft skills. Sautner uses miniature tools in a restrictive environment over long periods of time to produce intricate works of art. “His love of glass and intuitive understanding of it turns his sometimes 14-hour workdays into monk-like meditations, in which he and the glass become one. At this point, it is almost [like] the creative idea is driven by a spiritual force and directing the carving process. As he describes it, it is as if he is no longer the artist, but [that] he is the glass and someone else is the carver.”—Jan Smith, Bergstrom-Mahler Museum. Signed/dated. Height 5 5/16". $6500-8000 305. Salvador Ysart concentric millefiori paperweight, with a central white, red and yellow cross cane, encircled by four rings of canes in blue, red, yellow and white, on opaque aqua ground. Small side bruises. Uncommon “Y” signature cane. One of a select few of Salvador’s concentrics marked with the 62

“Y” signature. “A few of these better quality pieces were signed with a “Y” cane...presumably because of the high degree of skill needed to make this type of weight.” —R.G. Hall, “Cambridge Paperweight Circle Newsletter,” August 2002. Diameter 3 3/16". $1800-2800 306. Salvador Ysart concentric millefiori paperweight, with a central pink and yellow complex cane, encircled by four rings of canes in blue, red, green, yellow, orange and white, on opaque blue ground. Uncommon “Y” signature cane. Small side bruises. Another example of the high-quality work pro duced by the Vasart factory in the period when all three mem bers of the famous Ysart family worked together from around 1946 to 1956. As for the rare “Y” signature cane, “...the ques tion remains, why do some weights contain the “Y” cane and not all of them, (when) the quality of this range of weights is the same and made apparently by the same hand?” — R. G. Hall, “Cambridge Paperweight Circle Newsletter,” August 2002. Diameter 3 1/16”. $1800-2800
