Part I: A ntique Paperweights & R elated O bjects 1. Rare antique Baccarat four-flower bouquet paper weight. The well-balanced arrangement contains a central cobalt blue- and white-striped primrose, with a six-point star/honeycomb cane center, which is framed by two pansies, and crowned by a thousand-petal red rose. The twin Type-I pansies are comprised of two, dark, purple, upper petals, and three, cobalt blue and white, cog/arrow cane, lower petals, around a star/arrow/cross cane center. The very rare multi tiered dark red cone-shaped rose tilts slightly to one side, revealing three pointed green sepals, which hug its base. A slender green-sheathed red bud sprouts adjacent to the rose, along with several spaced green leaves. Four additional green leaves grow from two, long, crisscrossed, green stems below the bouquet, over clear, star-cut ground. “In contrast to the work of the other French factories, Baccarat produced conspicuously formal floral arrangements. These masterfully portrayed flowers combine to form a delightful garden. The millefiori cane sections that compose the bottom of the pansies indicate that this weight was produced in the early part of the classic period.” - The Art o f the Paperweight - Challenging Tradition. Diameter 3 3/8". $13,000-18,000

2. Rare antique Baccarat faceted cruciform bouquet paperweight. A double-tiered white buttercup, with yellow star stamens, centers the design, bordered by four, spaced, stylized, millefiori flowers, on radiating stems, with four buds and multiple green leaves. Two of the flowers are formed by red, blue, and white bull’s-eye/stardust/cog canes, while the alternate two are white, blue, and green six-point star/arrow/cog canes. A slender bud grows to one side of each of the four flowers, alternating between red and white. The piece has a clear, star-cut ground, and is cut with six and one facets. Formerly part of the collection of The New-York Historical Society. “The use of millefiori canes as decorative elements identify Baccarat as designer of this cruciform, flat bouquet.” - Glass

3. Very rare antique Clichy clematis bouquet paperweight. The lush bouquet is crowned by a pink-striped white double clematis, with a star/moss/floret cane center, which blooms between two white buds, on a long stem, with six dark green leaves. A red-striped white bud centers the design, framed by two additional double clematis flowers, one purple, and one of red-striped pink, each with a complex star cane center. A narrow pink ribbon is wrapped around the ends of the bouquet’s three gathered stems, over clear ground. Unpolished base. Clichy was renowned for its inventive flower portrayals, no two of which are exactly alike. The ribbon represents a gesture of love. Diameter 3 1/8". $12,000-16,000 4. Rare antique Baccarat dated scattered millefiori green carpet ground paperweight. The piece contains an assortment of complex canes, including the Gridel silhouettes of a deer, goat, dog, rooster, horse, moth, pigeon, and pelican, about a central arrow cane, with complex canes, in coral, yellow, plum, cadmium green, cobalt blue, and turquoise, in a sea of green, white, and red, six-point, star canes. A “B 1848” signature/date cane rests between two of the Gridel canes. Minor surface wear on side. “Carpet grounds, usually associated with clustered paperweight designs, are among the most appealing foils for the colored and silhouette canes.” - Paperweights: “Flowers which clothe the m eadows ”. The term carpet was applied to these weights in the Catalogue des Collections des Arts et Metiers (Paris, 1833). Diameter 2 3/4". $10,000-15,000

“Wherever they were made they are Victorian workmanship at its best.” -Paul Hollister, Glass Paperweights o f the New-York Historical Society. Diameter 3". $6000-8000 7. Unusual antique Saint Louis dated hound silhouette and concentric millefiori paperweight. The silhouette cane of a white hound is centered among five concentric rings of assorted complex canes, in pink, pale green, dark green, white, red, blue, and pistachio. One ring of canes includes twenty-three microscopic dancing woman silhouettes. The design rests on a white-striped green stave basket. “SL 1848” signature/date cane (1848 in reverse). “The (hound) silhouette is created as the interior of a cog cane which has 28 teeth, and this is the critical characteristic that identifies it as a Saint Louis breed... The large body and long tail suggest that an Epagneul Picard served as the model for this cane. This breed... is also a gun dog and originates from Picardy in the north of France”. - The Glass Menagerie:

6. Antique Pantin crimson-tinted rose and bud on white ground paperweight. The three-dimensional rose is composed of layered ruby-to-white petals, enclosing yellow stamens, inside four wellmade, but obscured, mint-green sepals. It blooms on a stem with a slender ruby bud and several, broad, aqua-green leaves, over opaque white ground. Scholars commonly classify a group of paperweights exhibiting qualities similar to this one as a Pantin, but definitive attri bution may elude some designs.

8. Antique Baccarat trefoil millefiori garlands on ruby color ground paperweight. A large central crimp cane is encircled by a ring of stardust/bull’s-eye canes, and bordered by a pair of interlaced trefoil garlands, which are looped around six, spaced, Gridel silhouette canes, including a dog, rooster, stag, butterfly, goat, and a pair of lovebirds, on translucent ruby ground. One of the garlands is comprised of white and green stardust/bull’s-eye canes, and the other of red, white, and green six-point star canes. Provenance: Collection of Sr. Ing. Manuel Gonzalas De Cosio of Mexico; Sold at Sotheby’s London July 3, 1967, Lot 133; Collection of Frances Fairchild. Diameter 2 13/16". $8000-10,000

9. Antique Baccarat green snake on pebbly ground paperweight. A green snake, with red and black eyes, coils on a pebbly green and beige ground, flecked with mica. The snake is beautifully rendered with a matte green design dressing his lighter green body. The paper weight is well made, evidenced by the lack of bubbles around the lampwork body. “Reptiles were relatively rare among the animal motifs of the classic period, although they were common symbols of renewal and youth.” - Glass Paperweights in the Art Institute o f Chicago. Diameter 3 3/16". $6000-10,000 10. Rare Antique Baccarat interlaced trefoil millefiori garlands paperweight. A central red, green, and white cross/arrow complex cane, is encircled by a ring of white and green stardust/bull’s-eye canes, and bordered by a pair of interlaced trefoil garlands, resting on a bed of lace. One of the garlands is comprised of green, white, and red com plex cog canes, and the other of red, white, and green complex crimp canes. A star/arrow complex cane rests within each of the six outer curves of the garlands. The creative repetition of form in this piece is a marvel of ingenuity. Similar to a fractal design, as one looks more and more closely at the piece, one discovers repetitions of the trefoil/star theme. To illustrate the detail in this piece: each six-pointed star in the red garland is surrounded by eight tiny trefoil canes no more than half a millimeter in size. “Perhaps the most exciting millefiori designs were the garlands” write Hollister and Lanmon in Paperweights “Flowers which clothe the m eadows ”. Diameter 3 1/16". $7000-9000 11. Rare antique Venetian dated Pietro Bigaglia/Giacomo Franchini scrambled millefiori and silhouette canes paperweight. Also included are a “P B. 1846” (Pietro Bigaglia) signature/date cane, a triple red rose picture cane, and silhouette canes of

a gondola, a sun face, two horses, three dogs, and four ducks. The weight also contains a Pantalone picture cane and a Harlequin cane, both canes representing figures in the Camedia delFArte, a popular Italian theatrical form. Part of a double-headed eagle silhouette cane is situated near the top of the piece. This was the insignia of the Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I. Diameter 2 15/16". $5500-8000
