Part I: A ntique Paperweights & R elated O bjects 1. Excellent rare antique Baccarat seven-flower bouquet paperweight. A large, rarely seen, turquoise buttercup centers the design, bordered by a red and white primrose, a pair of small blue flowers, a blue and white arrowhead cane flower, and two small white flowers, on stems with assorted green leaves. Each of the flowers displays a fine stardust/bulfs-eye cane center. The three-dimensional buttercup, with two tiers of cupped turquoise petals, blooms above a pair of crisscrossed stems, on clear ground cut with a twenty-four-point star. Minor cullet in dome. “Large multifloral bouquets were a specialty o f Baccarat and displayed the highest degree of skill in lampwork and millefiori techniques.” —Baccarat: Paperweights and Related Glass, 1820-1860. “Nearly all exam ples of flat floral bouquets show paperweight making at its gayest and most exuberant, belying the Victorian reputation for the lugubrious.” —The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3 7/16". $18,000-30,000
2. Very rare antique Baccarat four-flower bouquet paper weight. A large white double clematis commands attention at the top of the arrangement, with two tiers of long, ridged petals around a pale yellow, red, and white honeycomb/star cane center, as it blooms above a pair of pansies, and a red and white primrose. The Type-I pansies each have two large dark purple upper petals, and three cobalt blue and white arrow cane lower petals, around a pale yellow, red, and white hon eycomb/star cane center. The primrose, with white-banded red petals, displays the same center cane as the other three flowers. Numerous bright green leaves frame the blossoms, over clear, star-cut ground. “In contrast to the work of the other French factories, Baccarat produced conspicuously formal floral arrangements. These masterfully portrayed flow ers combine to form a delightful garden. The millefiori cane sections that compose the bottom of the pansies indicate that this weight was produced in the early part of the classic period.” —The Art o f the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. “In 1848, the introduction of lampwork added significantly to Baccarat’s already versatile use of millefiori canes as decora tive and identifying devices. Star and arrow canes center many flower types; the arrows were sometimes also used for lower pansy petals (as illustrated here) and for stylized arrange ments.” -G lass Paperweights in the Art Institute o f Chicago. Diameter 3 7/16". $13,000-20,000

3. Rare antique Clichy turquoise and white swirl with white rose paperweight. The clear-encased piece has curved rods of alternating turquoise and white, emanating from a large Clichy-trademark white and green rose cane. “These are peculiar to this factory and make a very striking addition to a collection, being entirely different from any other type. They are composed of a large central cane from which spring swirling opaque rods resembling a Catherine wheel.” —Antique Glass Paperweights from France. Diameter 3 1/16". $3300-4300 4. Rare antique Russian faceted six-flower bouquet pedestal paperweight. A central pink flower is encircled by blue and pink flow ers, and green leaves, on white ground, over a clear, star-cut, footed, pedestal base. Top facet and eight adjoining side panel facets. As the genealogy of Russian paperweight production begins to take shape (See “The Malstov Dynasty of Russia”, Annual Bulletin o f the Paperweight Collectors Association, Inc. 1995), one o f the more inter esting questions is one of cultural influence: Were the Russian artisans fully aware of the work of the leading European glass factories in the classic paperweight period, or were they creating in a cultural vacuum? One view states, “Botanical motifs were in part inspired by European design... but the St. Petersburg Botanical Gardens were also studied, as were the sumptuous albums illustrating diverse plants from around the world that the state-owned factories purchased as resources for their designers.” —Objects o f Fantasy: Glass Inclusions o f the Nineteenth Century. Diameter 2 13/16". $10,000-15,000 5. Very rare antique Baccarat paneled honeycomb carpet ground paperweight. A flower-shaped design decorates the top of the piece, comprised of cobalt blue, red, and white arrowhead/six-point star canes, and salmon-pink, blue, and white cog/six-point star canes, outlined with white and cobalt blue complex six-point star canes. The design is surrounded by a carpet o f aqua and white honeycomb
canes. Paul Hollister compared the fineness of this type o f paperweight to needlepoint. (See The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights) “...the car pet grounds most prized by connoisseurs are the tightly packed minia ture canes in combinations o f colors such as blue and white.” —Paperweights and Other Glass Curiosities. Diameter 2 3/4". $11,000-15,000

Excellent antique Clichy blue and white barber pole chequer paperweight. A large Clichy-trademark pink and green rose is positioned at the center of the design, surrounded by assorted spaced complex canes, in pink, green, red, maroon, and white, divided by segments of dark blue- and white-striped latticinio, over parallel strips o f white latticinio. “While white filigree separations are the rule, the more uncommon weights show twisted rods about which spiral colored threads and filigree, the threads being cobalt blue or thalo blue, peppermint pink, red, or green, the underside of the ground lined as usual with parallel filigree rods.” —The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3 1/16". $7500-10,000
6. Rare antique Baccarat dated blue star carpet ground millefiori paperweight. A central salmon-pink, blue, green, and white arrow head/rod cane is surrounded by assorted spaced complex millefiori, including the Gridel silhouette canes o f a dog, deer, butterfly, goat, and swan, on a lush carpet of cobalt blue and white six-point star canes. “B 1848” signature/date cane. The design includes a ring of six rare green shamrock silhou ette canes, and a border garland of thirteen spaced butterfly, or moth, picture canes. The six rarely seen shamrocks are quite large, as are the butterfly canes around the perimeter. “These are weights of power and impact, whose design must have taken considerable thought.” —The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3 1/8". $11,000-15,000
Fall 2006
9. Extremely rare antique Saint Louis millefiori butterfly and garland paperweight. Each of the butterfly’s four outstretched wings is composed of a complex cane, which is pressed onto an oval-shaped flattened tube. The two upper wings each consist of a light green, white, and pink cog cane, over a layer o f pink, while the lower pair of wings have pink, white, and blue star canes resting on cobalt blue. Two purple filament antennae and yellow eyes are attached to the cobalt blue upper half o f the butterfly’s body, the lower half of which is pale pink, green, and white striped. A border garland completes the design, with green, red, and white complex star canes alternating with red, white, and blue star/cog canes, on clear ground. This unique and fanciful paperweight is most certainly attributed to the Saint Louis factory and the only Saint Louis butterfly weight ever recorded which includes a garland o f the factory’s fine complex canes. Unlike the solid body of the butterflies produced by their rival Baccarat, the bodies of these specimens are created in two separate sections, each of a different color. “Saint Louis produced comparatively few weights featuring insects, birds or animals and as a class they are so rare as to be represented by a handful of items.” —Glass Paperweights. Diameter 2 15/16”. $10,000-20,000 10. Very rare antique Saint Louis encased faceted overlay upright bouquet paperweight. The bouquet is crowned by a large white lampwork flower, which is surrounded by four smaller flowers and green leaves, over clear, star-cut ground. Single white overlay, with six and one facets, encased in a layer of clear crystal. It is rare to see an encased white overlay of this sort, probably because o f the difficul ty involved in producing them. The process is extremely delicate, and certainly more weights were destroyed during production than made it to completion. “Overlays epitomize the trappings o f elegance sought by prospering mid-nineteenth century bourgeoisie” —Glass Paperweights in the Art Institute o f Chicago. Diameter 3". $6000-8000
