1 Extremely rare Clichy moss ground miniature paperweight. Very possibly the only one of its kind, and certainly the only known example at present, this exquisite moss ground is as beautiful as it is unique. A large, traditional pink and green rose presides at the center of the weight, circled by pastry mold canes, a white star, a complex star cane and a white rose, eight canes in all, in pinks, white, ruby red and brilliant blue, all against a beautiful moss carpet ground studded with edelweiss. “Moss grounds are a spectacular kind of carpet ground unique to Clichy.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. 2 Excellent and extremely rare Baccarat red and yellow buttercup-type primrose paperweight. Six cupped yellow petals cradle six deep red petals at their center and focus inward on a white stardust complex cane with a red and white bull’s-eye core. Framed by a fan of five subtly shaded, spaced green leaves, the flower sits atop a forking stem shared by a red bud and three leaves. It is garlanded by blue and white complex arrow canes in alternation with pink-centered, white cogs, over clear, star-cut ground. “Very rare variations, such as, yellow cupped petals surrounding red clematis type petals are known.” —Baccarat Paperweights; Two Centuries of Beauty. 3 3 Rare and exceptional antique Baccarat blue and white flat bouquet paperweight. A large double-tiered, white clematis is the focus of a bouquet with one smaller white clematis bloom and two smaller royal blue clematis blooms, each with a white stardust center. The smaller flowers are crested by three crenulated leaves and they, along with the larger bloom, share two vertical stems with an additional seven leaves and a royal blue bud. Clear, starcut ground. “Bouquets containing only two colors, as illustrated above are uncommon.” —Baccarat Paperweights; Two Centuries of Beauty. 4 4 Very rare antique Baccarat two-flower bouquet paperweight. A seldom seen type II marguerite and a very rare type II forget-menot are conjoined at the top of a long, thick green stem which is flanked toward the bottom by two shaded leaves. The marguerite is constructed with two tiers of alternating light blue petals, seven per tier, that are striped with a deep royal blue. Its nexus is a large white star honeycomb with amber hollows. The flower is crested by four spaced and slightly ribbed green leaves. The conjoining forget-me-not, which is accompanied by a single leaf, shares the marguerite’s characteristics of dark blue stripes against pale blue and a honeycomb core. Both flowers have a surprising reverse side in red and white stripes. Clear, star-cut ground. “This is one of the rarer flowers from Baccarat.” —Baccarat Paperweights; Two Centuries of Beauty. 5 Rare antique Baccarat flat clematis bouquet paperweight. Three white, single-tiered clematis blooms, each with six ribbed petals and a stardust core punctuated with a bright-colored bull’seye, grow from a forking stem shared by a companion bud and nine leaves. 6 Antique Saint Louis two-color crown paperweight. Bright yellow and brilliant blue spiraling ribbons alternate with white latticinio filigree twists, all cascading from a large center cane which begins with a concentric ring of white star canes and salmon canes. 7 Outstanding and extremely rare antique Clichy three flower bouquet faceted paperweight. A stunning trio of clematis blooms, double-tiered and each punctuated at its nexus by a unique complex cane, is achieved with gathered, leafy stems tied with a tiny bow. One flower is red with slightly shaded petals, another is white and the third is blue, each with a corresponding companion bud. Top facet and two tiers of round side facets. Clear, star-cut ground. “Any flat bouquet from Clichy would be considered rare, for while the variety of designs is good, the actual number of these weights made was small.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. 8 Rare antique Saint Louis signed close concentric millefiori paperweight. A central cluster of red dancing devils is ringed first by cerulean blue complex cog canes, then circles of aqua tubes filled with tan, a ring of exuberant white cogs with star shaped hollows, then blue and white florets against forest green, a ring of blue and green complex canes and, finally, a purple and pale green-tipped mauve stave basket. A prominent “SL” signature cane identifies the weight. “Signed Saint Louis weights number considerably less than their antique Baccarat counterparts.” —Paperweight Signature Canes. 9 Antique Baccarat upright bouquet faceted paperweight. A rare blue and white arrow cane type II primrose centers an upright bouquet built upon four tiers of delicately shaded green leaves that are drawn down into a gathered and tapering stem. Framing the primrose are four flowers, two white and two blue. The design is framed from beneath by a spiraling blue torsade encasing a delicate white latticinio inclusion. Clear, star-cut ground. Top facet and three rows of circular side facets in graduating size. “Flat bouquets are somewhat rare from Saint Louis, while being fairly common from Baccarat. The reverse is true of upright bouquets. Those from Baccarat are much rarer, and with few exceptions, much nicer.” —Baccarat Paperweights; Two Centuries of Beauty. The tuft of the mushroom contains a multitude of assorted complex canes, including a pink and green rose, a white and green rose and a white rose, resting on a basket of white staves which is shaped into a stem, over clear star-cut ground. 13 Antique Clichy double entwined quatrefoil garlands on opaque turquoise ground paperweight. A lovely design, it begins with a pink and green rose at its focus, ringed by a dozen moss ground canes and then by canes in deep red and white. Two entwining quatrefoil garlands enfold this central motif, one of white six point stars and the other of green-centered, pink cogs, all against a stunning opaque deep turquoise ground. 14 Antique Clichy spaced concentric millefiori with three rose canes on cobalt blue ground. A large pink pastry mold cane with a bull’s-eye core is the focus of two concentric rings of complex canes in a variety of color and design. 15 Antique Saint Louis mushroom with an orange torsade paperweight. A large complex center cane in salmon and white cups a floret at its core, ringed by white stars. Slightly spaced green cog canes ensue, their color bleeding onto the next of the four remaining concentric rings which move from white to blue to pink and back to green, this last being pulled down to form a mushroom stem. 20 Antique Baccarat millefiori mushroom in a turquoise double overlay faceted paperweight. A blue, black and white complex arrow cane centers a mushroom design which moves on to six white complex star canes, then red canes and finally blue and white cogs, all supported on a short ocher stem. 21 Antique Clichy blue and white chequer paperweight. A lovely weight, it is a very delicate version of the traditional Clichy chequer: blue and white latticinio twists arranged into a pattern of individual cells, each filled with a different complex cane and all resting on a white upset muslin ground. The canes are extremely varied in both color and design and include an unusual ocher complex bull’s-eye cane with a red bull’s-eye core, as well as a pink and green rose and a much rarer white one. Rising on a blue and white stave stem, a mushroom of close packed millefiori includes several roses in both pink and green and in white. This motif is then circled by six large royal blue and white canes with six-point stars. A spaced ring of complex red floret canes in alternation with green and white cogs ensues, then a ring of white complex florets alternating with green whorls, and finally a ring of white florets, red and white florets and blue and white six-point stars. Six intertwining stems of pink clematis buds rise in an erect display from two thick and slightly bent, variegated leaves, another five leaves, smaller, lining the stems. Five and one facets. A pretty nosegay of four varied millefiori flowers, in pink, white, blue and orange, a fan of five leaves cradling the design and a short, curved stem supporting it, floats within clear, honeycomb-cut ground. The large camomile, or pompon, has delicate yellow filament stamens surrounded by several concentric rings of white “C”-shaped rods. A large central complex cane, with a blue and white center and ocher rim, is the departure point for eight white tubes which extend to the weight’s periphery defining eight triangles alternating between a red and white jasper ground and a blue and white jasper ground. Alternating coral and white cog canes fit within the narrow end of each wedge. A ruby, blue and white twist torsade frames the design. Bruise to the underside near the basal rim.
