Part I: A ntique Paperweights & R elated O bjects 1. Very rare antique Baccarat four-flower bouquet paper­ weight. A claret pompon, with yellow star cane stamens, centers the arrangement, bordered by two Type-I pansies, each with two, shaded, purple, upper petals, and a trio of cobalt blue and white arrowhead cane lower petals. A white double clematis, surrounded by five green leaves, blooms at the top of the bouquet, while a red bud, green leaves, and twisted stems complete the design, over clear star-cut ground. The clematis and pansies each have matching pale yellow star/honeycomb centers. Extremely rare antique Clichy three-flower bouquet paperweight. The bouquet is topped by a pink flower, with six millefiori petals, around a pink, green, and white complex cane center, which shares an erect green stem with two small pink buds. A purple lampwork blossom and slender purple bud, fill one side of the bouquet, while a maroon and white millefiori flower, and matching bud comprise the other. The three leafy, green stems of the flowers are gathered and tied with a narrow pink ribbon. “Some fantas­ tic flowers have petals fashioned from lengths of the cane that have been sliced through lengthwise, exposing the interior of the cane, the petal tips showing the bisected cane ends, a remarkable feat and an exercise of imagination that repre­ sents paperweight-making at its best.” — Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. 3. Very rare antique Clichy pink millefiori rose and bud paper­ weight. The simple, yet elegant, rose is composed of a single complex cane, formed by close rings of flattened pink tubes, around a bundle of pale yellow rods. Five green petals frame the flower, as it grows on a long, curved, dark, green stem, with a companion pink bud and four shaded green leaves, over clear ground. Many Clichy paperweights contain this cane, but it is rare to discover a single flower weight where the rose is used as the flower head. Diameter 2 13/16". $16,000-25,000 4. Extremely rare antique Clichy millefiori and lampwork bou­ quet paperweight. A pink complex cane rose, with a center of yellow bundled rods, serves as the centerpiece for the arrangement, which includes assorted lampwork flowers, buds, and dark green leaves, on clear ground. Two of the flowers are cobalt blue, one is pale yellow, one is white, and one is pink and white striped. Painted in white enamel with exhibit accession number. 5. Rare antique Baccarat blue flower and buds paperweight. The flower is composed of five cobalt blue petals, outlined in white, surrounding a yellow and red center, with short spaced yellow rays. Four green leaves, and two blue and white twisted buds share a stem with the flower, which is bordered by six additional green leaves, on clear star-cut ground. Diameter 2 3/4". $4000-6000

6. Very nice antique Clichy circular millefiori garlands on rose pompadour color ground paperweight. The well-centered design contains a large white, green, and red, complex pastry mold cane, encircled by a ring of green, white, and red pastry mold canes. The border is surrounded by a spaced ring of five purple, circular garlands, alternating with five green-centered, white star canes, on an opaque pink color ground, (minor scratches). Diameter 3 3/16". $4230-5300 7. Rare antique Clichy signed close packed millefiori paperweight. An abundance of assorted complex canes fills the piece, including a green, pink, and white complex “C � signature cane, all resting within a basket of spaced white staves. Also included are three unusual flower canes, each composed of several yellow rods, encircled by a ring of pink whorls, and bordered by four, spaced, green staves. This cane could have been a prototype for the trademark Clichy rose, leading to the possibility that this is an early weight from the famed factory. Diameter 3 1/4". $4500-6000 8. Exceptional antique Clichy scattered millefiori on opaque turquoise color ground paperweight. A large maroon, blue, and white complex cog cane is centered by assorted, spaced, complex millefiori, on an opaque bright blue color ground. The design includes arrow, star, cross, bull’s-eye, and floret canes, as well as an unusual bird silhouette cane, and a white and green rose, which rests at the border of the piece. This color ground is one of the most celebrated of the colors from the Clichy factory. Diameter 3 1/8". $3250-4000

portant antique Baccarat dated close packed millefiori :rweight. The piece contains a close arrangement of assorted, colorful complex millefiori, including shamrock, star, arrow, leaf, flower, and pink rose canes. A large cobalt blue and white signature/date cane is pressed into one edge of the design, bearing the words, “Baccarat 21 April 1858”, in blue letters on white ground, “..the only other weights known to date from that decade, the close millefiori weights, of which several were made to commemorate the visit of Marchal Canrobert to Baccarat in 1858. In these, large opaque white tooth-edged cane bears in blue the inscription ‘Baccarat, 21, Avril 1858’ above a sprig of laurel. Marechal Canrobert (1809-95) had recently distinguished himself in the Crimea and was to gain further honors in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.” ^Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. The butterfly, with marbled millefiori wings and a dark purple body, hovers over a double-tiered, blue-spotted, white wheatflower. The flower is crowned by six radiating green leaves, and shares a stem with six additional green leaves, over clear star-cut ground. “Butterflies placed above flat flowers in a three-dimensional layering process were a Baccarat specialty.” -Paperweights: Flowers which clothe

11. Very nice antique Saint Louis pink dahlia paperweight. The flower, with several layers of overlapping, striped pink petals, around a yellow and blue cog cane center, is surrounded by six, spaced green leaves, on clear star-cut ground. Diameter 2 3/4". $3500-4500

12. Unusual antique Saint Louis silhouettes and concentric millefiori paperweight. The black silhouettes of a dancing woman and devil rest on a pink and white crimped center cane, which is encir­ cled by a ring of seven dancing devil silhouette canes. The remainder of the piece is composed of four concentric rings of large complex canes, in pink, white, red, blue, and green, resting on a basket of cobalt blue rods. Diameter 3 3/16". $6300-8000 13. Antique Baccarat faceted green snake paperweight. A greenspotted pale green snake, with a dark green stripe running the length of its back, coils on a cushion of fluffy white upset muslin. Six-sided top facet and fancy-cut sides. An air ring is trapped between the snake's coils. Diameter 3 3/16". $5000-7000

14. Antique Baccarat faceted green-flash overlay trefoil garlands and Gridels paperweight. The piece contains a central six-point star/arrow complex cane, encircled by a ring of green and white canes, which are surrounded by a pair of interlaced trefoil garlands, one in white and green, and one in red and white. A Gridel silhouette cane is positioned to the inside of each of the six outward loops of the garlands, over clear ground. Dark green-flash overlay, with six and one facets, and a ring of short finger facets around the lower edge (minor wear and chips). Diameter 3 1/4". $6000-7500 15. Very rare antique Clichy signed millefiori piedouche paper­ weight. A rare complex “C ” signature cane rests just off-center, nes­ tled among four clusters of close packed complex millefiori, in green, white, pink, red, and blue. Two concentric rings of complex canes encircle the border, over a pedestal of alternating blue and white staves. Clear footed base. Height 2 1/16", diameter 2 7/16". $7000-10,000

16. Antique Saint Louis two-flower bouquet on blue color ground paperweight. A yellow-centered red clematis is paired with a white double clematis, with ridged petals, and a yellow and red center. The flowers are surrounded by five dark green leaves, and share a long curved stem, on cobalt blue ground. Diameter 2 15/16". $5000-6500 17. Exceptional antique Baccarat "thousand petal" rose paper­ weight. The large flower is composed of numerous, close, furled, red petals, bordered by a ring of seven red petals, which curve outward. Seven green leaves crown the rose, as it blooms on a curved green stem, with six additional green leaves, over clear ground. “So called because of its numerous petals, the unmistakable splendor of the "thousand petaled" rose speaks of a love with boundless intensity. The blood-red color of the bloom alludes to the passion of the sender. This type of flower is also sometimes referred to as a cabbage rose because of its tightly furled petals.” —The Art o f the Paperweight—Challenging Tradition.. Diameter 2 15/16". $4000-6000

18. Antique Clichy blue and white swirl paperweight. A pinwheel design is formed by curved ribbons of alternating cobalt blue and white, which emanate from a white and red complex star cane. Diameter 2 5/8". $1400-2000 19. Antique Saint Louis faceted upright bouquet and torsade paperweight. The five-flower bouquet is crowned by a large red clematis, which is framed by two lampwork flowers, in white and cobalt blue, and two cane flowers, in mauve and yellow. Four long green leaves are spaced around the bouquet, with a common stem extending down to the clear ground. A blue and white spiralencased, twist torsade and two air rings surround the arrangement. Rounded dome, with six large side facets (wear). Diameter 3 1/4". $1500-2500

20. Antique Clichy millefiori garlands on sodden snow paper­ weight. A large pink, white, and green pastry mold cane centers the piece, encircled by an uneven garland of light blue complex star canes, which are bordered by a spaced ring of five green and pink canes. A five-point star-shaped garland surrounds the periphery, composed of alternating pink and green complex canes, a few of which are missing from one section. The design rests on white sodden snow ground. Diameter 3 1/4". $1400-2000 21. Antique Clichy faceted millefiori chequer paperweight. The piece contains a central pink and green rose, encircled by two rings of spaced complex canes, in vibrant shades of green, pink, red, blue, purple, and white, which are divided by short sections of white latticinio, over a bed of parallel white latticinio rods. Top facet, and two rows of five oval side facets, divided by five vertical grooves. Star-cut base. Diameter 2 5/8". $3000-4000

23. Antique Clichy millefiori chequer paperweight. The design contains twenty spaced, colorful, complex canes, including a central maroon ruffled cane, and a pink and green rose, which are divided by short sections of white latticinio, on parallel strips of white latticinio. A large pink and green rose is centered by two spaced concen­ tric rings of assorted complex canes in green, red, pink, blue, purple, maroon, and white, which are divided by short segments of white latticinio, over parallel strips of white latticinio. An assortment of complex canes, in pink, green, red, light blue, cobalt blue, purple, yellow, and white, are nestled in a ground of white sodden snow. Diameter 3". $1500-2500 27. The piece contains a central green and white floret/cog cane, which is surrounded by assorted complex canes, in various combinations of pink, green, and white, on sodden snow ground. A trio of pink and white canes are encircled by two concentric rings of white complex star canes, which are bordered by a pair of interlaced cinquefoil garlands, on translucent cobalt blue ground. The garlands are composed of complex floret/cog canes, and alternate between white and green, and white and red. Diameter 3 1/8". $2500-3500

29. Antique Clichy trefoil millefiori garland on ruby ground paperweight. Seven spaced, complex, pastry mold canes, are surrounded by a trefoil garland, composed of white and blue star canes, alternating with green, white, and red cog canes, on translucent ruby ground. The spaced canes are comprised of various combinations of white, green, and red. Diameter 3". $2500-3500 30. Antique Clichy close concentric millefiori paperweight, the clear glass set with six rows of assorted millefiori, in shades of red, cobalt blue, green, pink, aqua, turquoise and white, around a composite crimp cog cane at center, within a basket of opaque red and white staves (internal crack in base). 38. Antique Saint Louis two-color crown paperweight. Red and green twists, alternate with ribbons of spiraling white latticinio, radiating from a yellow, blue, and white, star/cross cane center. Diameter 2 5/8". $1000-1500 39. Antique Saint Louis looped garland millefiori paperweight, with a propeller-shaped design of complex canes, the individual loops alternating in color between white and salmon, set on an opaque turquoise ground. Saint louis produced these pieces to compete with the popular Clichy swirl weight. (See the Art o f the Paperweight , p.84; The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweight , p. 90; Paperweights fo r Collectors, p. 57) Diameter 3". $3250-4500 40. Antique Saint Louis concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade paperweight. The tuft of the mushroom is composed of a large white and cobalt blue star/cog complex cane center, encircled by a ring of pink and white hollow cog canes, and bordered by a ring of cobalt blue and white star canes. A pink latticinio-encased, white, twist torsade, surrounds the cobalt blue stem of the mushroom, on clear star-cut ground. A pair of uneven air rings border the torsade, and dark cullet is visible on one side, near the base. Diameter 2 7/8". $1300-2000

41. Antique Saint Louis white camomile on swirling pink lat­ ticinio paperweight. The well-formed camomile, composed of mul­ tiple rings of C-shaped white canes, is bordered by a white bud, four serrated green leaves, and a curved green stem, on a double-swirl pink latticinio cushion. Diameter 2 7/8". $1700-2000 42. Antique Saint Louis pink camomile and garland paperweight. The camomile, or pompon, has a complex star cane center, in yellow, blue, red, and white, which is surrounded by several rings of C-shaped pink canes. A red bud and two green leaves protrude from behind the flower, which grows on a thick green stem, with two additional green leaves, over clear star-cut ground. The design is completed with a border garland of alternating blue and white complex canes (minor chips). Diameter 3 1/16". $2000-3000 43. Antique Saint Louis pink camomile and bud paperweight. The full flower, composed of rings of partially flattened pink tubes, around a complex star cane center, blooms on a stem with a red bud and four large green leaves, on a double-swirl white latticinio cushion. 44. Antique Saint Louis fuchsia on swirling latticinio paper­ weight. A dark pink and cobalt blue fuchsia blossom, is attached by a thin stem to a golden branch, with a pair of dark pink buds and four light green leaves, on a double-swirl white latticinio cushion. Diameter 2 15/16". $3000-4000 45. Antique Saint Louis faceted millefiori nosegay paperweight. Four complex cog cane flowers, in pink, blue, yellow, and white, are bordered by five, bright, green leaves and stems, over clear ground. Small circular top facet, encircled by a ring of seven printies, and five, large, oval, side facets. Diameter 2 7/8". $1400-1800

47. Antique Saint Louis honeycomb-faceted cherries paperweight. Two red cherries grow from a golden branch, with three rigid green leaves, over clear ground. All-over honeycomb facets. Diameter 2 3/4". $3000-4000 48. Antique Saint Louis strawberries on latticinio paperweight. Two dark red strawberries, ripen on stems with a blue-centered white blossom and green leaves, on double-swirl white latticinio. Diameter 2 11/16". $3000-4000

46. Antique Saint Louis patterned millefiori garland vase with five pistachio and salmon complex canes set around a salmon and Persian blue bull’s-eye/star cane, inside a garland of complex star-shaped canes and cog canes alternating between salmon and cadmium green in the base. The cup of the vase has been engraved with vines of grapes and branches of peaches. A spiraling cobalt blue and white latticinio twist torsade encircles the mouth of the vase. 49. Antique Saint Louis five-flower millefiori nosegay paper­ weight. The nosegay is composed of five complex cane flowers, in white, blue, yellow, and pink, which are bordered by six large green leaves and have gathered stems, on clear diamond-cut ground. Diameter 3 1/4". $1000-1300 50. Antique Saint Louis millefiori nosegay and garland paper­ weight. The piece contains a nosegay of four complex cane flowers, five red berries, five radiating dark green leaves, and a stem, which is encircled by a millefiori border garland, on diamond-cut amber-flash ground. The garland is composed of green, pink, and white star/cog canes, alternating with pink, white, and blue star/bull's-eye canes. Diameter 3 1/8". $1000-1300 51. Antique Saint Louis two-flower bouquet paperweight. A purple and dark yellow pansy, and a six-petaled white flower, nod away from each other, on stems with two green leaves, over clear dia­ mond-cut ground. Diameter 2 15/16". $2000-3000

52. Antique Saint Louis pelargonium and garland paperweight. The pelargonium, or geranium, has a yellow center and five cobalt blue petals, outlined in white, which curl under at the outer edges. Five light green leaf tips protrude from behind the blossom, as it grows on a stem with two green leaves, on clear star-cut ground. A millefiori garland, of alternating blue and yellow canes, encircles the border of the piece. Diameter 2 7/16". $4000-6000 53. Antique Saint Louis faceted upright bouquet paperweight. The delicate bouquet consists of five lampwork and millefiori flowers, in shades of pink, blue, yellow, and white, with green leaves and gathered stems, over clear diamond-cut ground. All-over circular facets. Diameter 2 13/16". $3000-4000 54. Antique Saint Louis faceted upright bouquet paperweight. A pink lampwork flower centers the bouquet, surrounded by four lampwork and cane flowers, in blue and white, with green leaves and a common stem. The clear star-cut ground is encircled by a white spiral-encased white twist torsade, with two air ring inclusions. All-over geometric facets. Diameter 2 13/16". $2730-3500

55. Antique Saint Louis cobalt blue double clematis on jasper ground paperweight. The flower, composed of two tiers of cobalt blue petals, around a pink, white, and blue cog cane center, is bordered by serrated green leaves and a short curled stem, on red, pink, and white jasper ground. Diameter 211/16". $1000-1500 56. Antique Saint Louis nosegay on swirling latticinio paper­ weight. The five-flower nosegay has a central pale lavender blossom, which is surrounded by four cane flowers, two each, in blue and coral. The flowers are framed by five light green leaves, and a long curved stem, on a cushion of fine, double-swirl, white latticinio. A strand of cullet floats over the ground, near the outer edge. Diameter 2 1/4". $1000-1500 57. Antique Saint Louis scrambled millefiori paperweight. The piece contains colorful whole and partial complex canes, twists, rods, and latticinio. 58. Antique Saint Louis red and white jasper ground paperweight, with center complex cane of pistachio, red and white. Diameter 2 1/4". $500-600 59. Antique Saint Louis jasper spoke paperweight. A red and white latticinio turban-swirl, is centered by a spaced ring of eight complex canes, which alternate with white rod spokes, dividing panels of jasper. The panels alternate between blue and white, and red and white, and are bordered by a red, white, and green filigree torsade. One white spoke is missing from the design (small bruise on side). 61. Antique Baccarat faceted Joan of Arc sulphide on color ground paperweight. A white sulphide of Joan of Arc, holding a sword, is framed by two curved branches of laurel leaves and oak leaves, on translucent green ground. Top facet and all-over geometric side facets (minor chips). Diameter 3 1/2". $2750-3500

64. Antique Baccarat close packed millefiori and Gridel silhouette canes paperweight. The Gridel silhouette canes of a rooster, a goat, and a pair of lovebirds, are scattered among an assortment of color­ ful complex millefiori, including shamrock, cross, star, bull's-eye, and arrow canes. Diameter 2 3/4". $2750-3500

62. Antique Baccarat faceted turquoise overlay circular millefiori garlands paperweight. A symmetrical design, with a spaced ring of six circular garlands, around a central garland, within a turquoiseover-white double overlay. Paul J okelson S cholarship Fund Our last three auctions have included lots as fundraisers for the Paul Jokelson Scholarship Fund, established by the International Paperweight Society Foundation. Saint Louis 1980 filigree and concentric millefiori crystal candlestick. The paperweight base of the piece is composed of six close concentric rings of assorted complex millefiori, around a red, blue, and white complex cane center.
