Part I: A ntique Paperweights & R elated O bjects 1. Very rare and important antique Mount Washington Glass Company strawberries and blossoms magnum paperweight. Six, three-dimensional, red strawberries ripen on vines, with four, fanciful, white blossoms and green leaves, over clear ground. Several blue leaves rest near the border of the piece. This portrayal of a patch of wild straw berries amidst white blossoms, circa 1840-1880, contains vines and leaves which are a significantly more developed than the few other paperweights of this motif. This weight may have been inspired by the “strawberry fever” that swept the United States between 1858 and 1870, when new grow ing methods made the fruit readily available. The Mount Washington Glass Company, located in South Boston, was founded in 1837. Strawberry weights are suspected to have been the work of noted artists Emil Larson or Emil Avinwell. Diameter 3 7/8". $24,000-30,000

2. Rare antique Baccarat four-flower bouquet paper weight. A claret pompon, with four concentric rings of C-shaped rods around a yellow, star, complex cane center, is framed by two Type I pansies, each with shaded purple upper petals, and three cobalt blue and white arrowhead cane lower petals. A white double clematis blooms above the pompon, crowned by four, spaced, bright green leaves, as it shares a stem with a pair of small, furled, green leaves. The clematis and pansies each display similar pale yellow, red, and white star honeycomb/star cane centers. The design is finished with a small red bud and green leaves, sprouting from a green vine which wraps around the stem of the pom pon. Clear ground. “Nearly all examples of flat floral bou quets show paperweight making at its gayest and most exu berant, belying the Victorian reputation for the lugubrious.” —Paperweights: “Flowers Which Clothe The M eadow s ”. In 1848, the introduction of lamp work added significantly to Baccarat’s already versatile use of millefiori canes as decorative and identifying devices. Star and arrow canes center many flower types; the arrows were sometimes also used for lower pansy petals (as illustrated here) and for stylized arrangements...” -Glass Paperweights in The Art

3. Unusual and rare antique Saint Louis white and blue prim rose paperweight. The unusual flower, a rare hybrid in the crystal garden of Saint Louis, is composed of a yellow match head center, encircled by five, ridged, white petals, each with a center band of cobalt blue. Four, spaced, green leaves emerge from behind the primrose, as it blooms on a stem, with a tightly closed light blue bud and a pair of green leaves, over clear ground. Diameter 2 13/16". $7000-9000 4. Extraordinary antique Clichy cinquefoil millefiori garlands on upset muslin paperweight. A dark purple, white, and red complex cog cane centers the piece, surrounded by a cinquefoil garland consisting of five, interlaced, question mark-shaped rows of assorted cog and pastry mold canes, in purple, pink, white, and two shades of green. A large complex cane rests just to the inside of each of the gar land’s five outer curves, one of which is a Clichy-trademark, Type I, pink and green rose. Popular for its beauty, the Clichy rose, perhaps more than any other cane, conjures up the passions of the Victorian era. The remaining four canes include a cobalt blue pastry mold/bull’seye cane, a maroon cog/star cane, a pink cog/bull’s-eye cane, and a light blue and white floret/star cane. The design rests on a cushion of white upset muslin, over parallel rows of white latticinio. Diameter 3 1/4". $5300-7300 5. Top facet and six, deep, oval, side facets. This weight represents one

of the few carpet grounds from the G illinder factory. “Like other weights, it has the characteristic long, very deeply cut oval punties and the feathery canes formed as a dome. The lower rim of white canes draws to the center of the base in the Bacchus m anner.” —Glass P aperw eights o f the New-York H istorical Society. Provenance: Dr. Daniel and Phyllis Turner collection. The piece depicts a white sailing ship, floating on blue water, over a clear, footed, pedestal base. A red flag flies at the top of the ship’s mast. Unpolished base. “But the most ingenious paperweights at Millville were those upright scenes derived from iron or steel dies and made by Michael Kane. In paper-thin colored glass pictures as delicate as if they had been etched, Kane shows ...a yacht, a clipper ship... in a superb series of vignettes that sets the pulse to beating with chauvinistic nostalgia. These large, clear, heavy, handsome weights come plain, footed, on pedestals, and occa sionally, as with the clipper ships, in pairs that were probably used as mantel ornaments.” —The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights (p. 240). “Perhaps this sailing sloop was meant to represent the Spray, in which Captain Joshua Slocum started around the world in 1893, though the boat, formerly an oyster sloop, was rigged as a yawl for the voyage.” —Glass Paperweights o f the New-York Historical Society. “Seeing these minute glass objects, many people ask themselves how is it possible, with a material so difficult to work, to achieve crispness of design on such a tiny scale. The secret lies in the fact that the glass cane, when it has been heated to the correct degree, can be drawn out, with the result that the diameter is reduced, while the design remains the same.” - Giovanni Sarpellon, Miniature Masterpieces, Mosaic Glass “Bewitched by the magic of these objects, I would often chat with Mario Dei Rossi who would use his extreme simplicity and self-assuredness to explain the procedures he would use to create what seemed to me the end result of magic spells. I was full of admiration for the way he would patiently work at his ‘murrini’, with which he was experimenting at that very time. Countless sticks’ of colored glass would be used for a pattern; molten and elongated, they would become a cylinder that contained the same image for their entire length. Then they would be cut into ‘slices’, thus reproducing the original image with almost magical precision.” —Fulvia Zudic, Pirano
