5531 Perth County Line 86, Listowel, ON David Carson Auction Services LTD

D Welcome to the BAR-J-M Retirement Sale C It all started in 1986 when John and Barb purchased their first three Herefords from John’s brother Clifford Mastine of Joycliff Farm. The fascination grew and so did the herd to 25 cows. The once completely treed acreage became open fields of what now is BAR-J-M Farm. It was not long before John and Barb began attending local fairs and conversing with fellow breeders and exhibitors. After a few outings, John and Barb caught the show bug. In 1989 with the help of Tom McNeely of Golden Oak Livestock, John and Barb started their showing career. They dove right in and attended a cattle show nearly every weekend traveling all over the country from the Ottawa Valley to Prince Edward County, into Quebec, to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, and as far west as Regina for the Canadian Western Agribition. To remain competitive John and Barb attended numerous sales and acquired a number of influential animals. Quite possibly the most influential animal they purchased was in 1990, JR LB 621 Chivas Y168—a purchase made with great friends George & Colleen McNeely of Golden Oak Livestock. Chivas began to influence their program for the better. In January of 1995 BAR-J-M Sparkle 1E was born. Sparkle would prove to be one of the most influential cows that BAR-J-M had ever bred and owned. Sparkle would go onto produce 13 natural calves before being retired. Not only was she a maternal powerhouse, but she was a many-time champion in the show ring and a Gold Trophy Dam. John and Barb both worked off the farm and with the demand of their jobs and the passion to have competitive show cattle, they hired Bill & Juanita Elmhirst. Billy and Juanita worked alongside John and Barb for a number of years showcasing the BAR-J-M genetics and teaching myself all there was to know. Billy and Juanita helped to take BAR-J-M to the next level in the show ring. Over the years, John and Barb have had the pleasure of consigning to a number of production sales such as the Quinte Quality, Autumn Alliance and Partners in Progress. They have had the opportunity to partner and work alongside Jack & Lois McAughey, Kevin Brown, George McNeely, Norm Taylor and many other prolific Hereford breeders. One of John and Barb’s biggest passions was the junior program. They would take every opportunity they could to support and sponsor the juniors. A highlight for them was

2

when they hosted the Ontario Junior Hereford Beef -A-Rama in 2006 at their farm. They played host to a number of cattle, junior members and their families. Time went on and things changed, but their passion for the Hereford breed remained the same. They would go on to breed and purchase some outstanding animals. • BAR-J-M Rocky 120L – sire of 108 animals, Gold Trophy Sire and many time champion. • BJM HRF Tradition 13T – sire of 51 animals, Silver Trophy Sire and an extensive show career with highlights being Expo Boeuf Victoriaville Quebec Supreme Champion Bull. • BAR-J-M Gloria 9P – Gold Trophy Dam, daughter of Rocky, mother of Tradition & Fusion. • BAR-J-M Fusion 9S – Silver Trophy Sire, sold alongside his mother at the Autumn Alliance Sale for $18,000 • BAR-J-M Grand Slam 1Y – 2012 RAWF Reserve Grand Champion Bull • GH Col Patton 20P – Expo Boeuf Supreme Champion Bull, Reserve Grand Champion Bull RAWF, sire of 114 animals. Most recently they purchased MHPH 10Y Chizel ET 1021C from good friends Jack & Lois McHaughey and manager Kevin Brown. Chizel has enhanced the BAR-J-M herd and the future of the Hereford breed. Chizel’s offspring averaged $5,500 at the 2018 Autumn Alliance Sale. As you look through the catalogue you will observe a number of offspring, as well as females bred to Chizel. Their story is endless and one that I could sit and write about all day. Unfortunately, there is only so much room in this catalogue. Before I close off this novel I would like to say a special thank you to our long-time partners Bob Hess and Stan & Sandra Farnsworth, our fitters Allan Crogie and the late James Hayes and two of the biggest supporters of my grandparents, Ron & Nadine Wells. On behalf of my grandparents, John and Barb Mastine, I want to express their sincere gratitude to all of their buyers, supporters and friends who have made this journey an unforgettable one. This sale is not the end of anything, but the beginning of many things. Thank you Sarah

D Thalia Cow Family C Take a look at the strong framed image on the females in this cow family. Flat shouldered, big middled, and wide hipped cows are common with this line. Performance strength is also a given here. This line has proven very workable with just about anything you want to mix it with. Milk expression and devoted motherhood is another asset of this family passed on from Thalia 30T herself.

D Lucy Cow Family C BAR-J-M Lucy 36P was a cow that was admired for her moderate frame, sound structure and nearly perfect udder. We lost Lucy last year at fourteen years of age and she was still in production. A cow that has a number of elite Hereford genetics in her pedigree; Remitall Embracer 8E, NJW Z17 Vaquero 25C, Watview 12Z Julie 5D just to name a few. As I sit here and write these footnotes I question why we only have a few progeny to offer from our Lucy? Well it is because they were always the good ones who ended up sold out of the show string or at the iconic Autumn Alliance Sale! Lucy is the mother of BAR-J-M Temptation 24S a cow that was purchased in the Autumn Alliance Sale by RWB Herefords. Temptation has been the headliner of their show string for many years. Just mention the name BAR-J-M Temptation in Quebec and watch the heads turn. This is a cow family you need to invest in.

D Mississippi Cow Family C Another cow we acquired from Harvey at Wascana Cattle Co as a yearling. Wascana females are flat out good and work with whatever you breed them to. They are some of the best mothers I have ever seen and all have picture perfect udders. This rugged, moderate framed young cow is 2 for 2 in production. She stamps them the same and puts the pretty and functionality into them. She is a cow that will thrive in any herd whether you are the commercial guy looking for pounds and ease or the purebred side looking for showring beauty.
