Entertainers • Party in the Park It’s a Knockout •Tug of War • Parade Re-enactments • Stalls • Competitions Inflatables • Fun Dog Show ....and much more!! Admission at Gate £1 per person on Saturday & Sunday
Welcome Greetings to all! It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the 2014 Chatteris Midsummer Festival programme which will give you a comprehensive guide to the many and varied activities on offer. The Midsummer Festival will run from June 27th to 29th at Furrowfields Recreation Ground and will include the walking parade, Party in the Park, Tug of War and It’s a Knockout competitions and the everpopular dog show. Entry to the Festival site is just £1 per person each day. This year we have some new, local providers working with the Festival Committee in running some of the main attractions - as such a big welcome is extended to Discover Your Mojo who are taking part in this year’s Midsummer Festival for the first time and hopefully for many more to come. Returning will be the Living History Day for schoolchildren, the cream teas and, of course, the popular arena events including performances by local groups, historic re-enactors, children’s entertainers and musical items. Attractions for children will include junior versions of the Tug of War and It’s a Knockout competitions on the Sunday, a land train on the Saturday and the ever popular fun fair, inflatables and performances by Devilstick Peat and the Dragons of Wye-ten over the weekend. The organisers are hoping as many residents as possible will be involved by taking part or cheering on the parade, taking part in the competitions, supporting talented local singers at the Party in the Park or simply watching the fun. The Festival is a great example of partnership working between the two main funders Chatteris Town Council and Fenland District Council. I would like to thank these two bodies for their continued support, but also a huge ‘thank you’ to the dedicated band of hard working volunteers from the community – maybe you would like to help in the future? I sincerely hope you will all come along and help support this community event – it should prove to be good fun come rain or shine! All very best wishes, Cllr. James Carney Mayor of Chatteris 2014-15

Performers and Attractions Throughout the programme you will find some more information about the wonderful variety of performers at the festival, details of the events on pages 13-15 and the weekend’s arena schedule in the centre pages, 16-17. Plenty of assistance to help you plan your days this year!
Devilstick Peat ...the complete fool! When Peat first told his family and friends about his ambition to become a fool they were, understandably, concerned! However, undeterred by their reservations Peat persevered and has spent the last 17 years learning a multitude of talents which, mixed with his own zany brand of humour, has resulted in Devilstick Peat reaching near iconic status within the circus, entertainment, and re-enactment communities. Peat has worked in over 20 countries on 3 continents and has had the pleasure of performing at The British and European Juggling Conventions, Glastonbury Festival of Performing Arts, some of Europe’s largest medieval festivals, various castles and even conflict zones. www.devilstickpeat.co.uk
The Victorian Strollers We are a well established Network of friends of all ages from all over Southern England (and up to Hull in fact), with a similar interest, who specialise in portraying Victorian gentlefolk with a great range of award winning characters in authentic period costumes; Gentlemen, Ladies, Officers, Children and on occasion a few of the ‘lower classes’ as well. A fine group for adding that extra Victorian flavour to any event. Feel free to ask us questions, admire our outfits and have your photograph taken with us as we stroll around. www.victorianstrollers.co.uk
The Pentacle Drummers The Pentacle Drummers were founded in 2001 to perform at the Lammas Festival to accompany the Eastbourne Giants, ‘Herne the Hunter’ and ‘Andred’, Saxon Goddess of the Weald. Since then they have grown from a small group to a troupe in excess of 40 members who perform at over 30 events a year. In their main livery of green and red, their tatter coats and face paint helping to lend a theatrical touch to events, they share their contagious, powerful, tribal-esque rhythms and entertain the masses. www.pentacle-drummers.co.uk www.chatterismidsummerfestival.co.uk

Farcet Dance and Twirl The troupe have been together since 2005 and in that time they have performed at various functions. Dance & Twirl perform to contemporary music using dance poms and batons. The troupe have proved a great success and they really enjoy their performances. A feature of the troupe is the pink sports car that leads them out and also provides the backing music at outdoor events. The Chief Instructor and founder Mrs Denise Fovargue along with Mrs Mel Hamlet and Troupe leader Rebecca Ward all hope you really enjoy the performances. For more information contact Denise on 07527 054122.
The Outlaws The Outlaws Western Club are a group of like minded folks of all backgrounds that enjoy getting together, dressing as cowboys, saloon girls or just towns folk and having a good time, raising money for local needy people & organisations. We are very much a family Club and still have a number of members who first joined in 1979, the year the Club was formed. Anyone is welcome to any of our events and meetings. You never know, you might get to like being a bit of a cowboy!

The Dragons of Wye-ten We are a family run puppet theatre specialising in medieval puppetry with jousting knights, princesses to be rescued and our speciality, sword-fighting dragons. Our puppetry retells some of the oldest tales ever told, along with new stories from our writing team. As well as stories told on our stage we also present the Medieval Interactive Puppet Show, where the children are encouraged to become the puppeteers! This includes Yumi, our 12ft long dragon for 5 children at a time to puppeteer! - In front of our stageWalkabout. There will be two walkabouts, one with our baby dragon and one with our 5ft long dragon, both of which are much loved and appreciated by our audiences. www.dragonsofwye-ten.co.uk

Chatteris Remembers Among the many exhibitions and stalls at the Festival will be a display from Chatteris Remembers and it is hoped the children who have been involved with the project will also take part in the parade and play some World War I music. “Chatteris Remembers” has been a year-long project; researchers have worked with the Year Six pupils from Kingsfield School who have researched the lives and military careers of the 160 Chatteris men who died in the First World War and are commemorated on the war memorial. They have created a physical file for each soldier and a biography for each that has been placed on the online Chatteris Community Archive. At the beginning of July the children will stage a play at the King Edward Centre based on the experiences of the Chatteris men who died.
Cycling Past, Present & Future The Community Archive in Chatteris has got together with Cycleroutes 4 Chatteris and Adult Community Learning to run a stall with a cycling theme. A free exhibition of Cycle photographs from the Chatteris Archive will be on display along with a cycle expert who will have some fun cycle related activities for all to enjoy. On hand will be a representative from the Adult Community Learning Team who will be available to answer questions and listen to your views on future provision of community learning for Chatteris. Cycleroutes4 Chatteris hope you will visit the stall with ideas about potential routes around Chatteris and how to improve and promote cycling in the town.
For allowing the planned ‘fly-past’ , the Midsummer Festival organisers would like to record our very special thanks to: The Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (RAFBBMF) which is administratively part of No.1 Group RAF, based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. The aircraft are regularly seen at events commemorating World War II, upon British State occasions, notably the Trooping the Colour celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday and at air displays throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. RAF BBMF commemorate the past of the RAF’s Air Combat Power - Lest We Forget For more information go to their website: http://www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/
