Whittlesey History Whittlesey is an ancient market town and is mentioned as far back in time as AD972. The architecture spans many centuries. Buildings are of stone, brick,or timber framed Wattle and Daub. Roofs are of thatch, slate, colleweston stone and tiles. In the past inhabitants made a living from agriculture, horticulture and brickmaking with associated trades The Buttercross situated in the town square is a listed Scheduled Ancient Monument and was built in 1680. Not only did it give protection from the weather to those selling butter and dairy goods on market days, but has been and still is a meeting place for young and old. In 1759 The Courts made an order to fine youths if they kicked a football under The Buttercross. They had damaged the slate covering, broken windows in nearby houses and obstructed the passage rendering it very dangerous and unsafe for people to pass. It seems a market was in evidence as early as the 13th century. It is thought there was probably another market for St.Andrew’s manor in London Street. The roads were just hard packed mud, occasionally topped with local gravel supplied by The Governors of the Town’s Revenues. In places a cobbled section would allow people to cross the road without getting dirty. Fenmen were known to be tough and hardy. No fen man washed his feet if he could help it as he believed the practice weakening. They drank heavily and took opium to counteract malarial rheumatism and ague (shivering fever) but locals were health conscious as far back as 1729 when an order was made for NO SMOKING in the streets or lanes unless under suitable covering. Peterborough Highland Pipe Band

Marching through Whittlesey at the Remembrance Day Parade 2013 Peterborough Highland Pipe Band is a uniformed marching band that has been promoting Scottish Highland music through public performances in and around the City of Peterborough for over 60 years. We help organisations like The Royal British Legion to raise much needed funds for their various charities. The band is also available for private bookings such as Weddings, Funerals, Parties, Fetes and Corporate events. Do you want to play the pipes or drums or do highland dancing? It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Scot or not, membership is open to anyone with an interest and enthusiasm. No prior experience is necessary, we provide free tuition and loan of instruments to get you started. www.peterboroughpipeband.co.uk Whittlesey Festival 2014

Sutherland Pipes and Drums The Sutherland Pipes and Drums, formed in 1965, is the culmination of a group of like minded individuals that wanted to promote the sound of the highland pipes and drums in the south eastern counties of England. Based in Corringham Essex, the concept and its practice and principles were the brainchild of one man following a chance meeting with a former Queens Own Cameron Highlander, Pipe Major Dan Macrae.

The Band’ s uniform is based on traditional Highland military number one dress to promote the traditions and music of the Highland military. • The Pipers wear Green Doublets (jackets) with a full Plaid and the Drummers wear red doublets trimmed with crown tape (the colours of the English regiments) and a smaller drummers Plaid. • The head-dress is commonly the ostrich feather bonnet sporting a red hackle. • For ‘walking out’ the Glengarry (pipers with cock feathers and drummers with a red and white braided trim). • The sporran is normally only worn as part of a ceremonial outfit and is made of the traditional 18” Horsehair. • We also wear a sgian-dubh which is worn tucked into the top of the kilt hose with only the upper portion of the hilt visible and a dirk with a 12” blade and lavishly decorated. We represent a fusion of ancient and modern. Our music ranging from the foot tapping ‘come-al-yeas’ of the Ceilidh to the poignant laments. We have played in England, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium; notably at ‘Cinquantinairre’ in Brussels in 1994 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the City’s Liberation. This we did before Prince Andrew and in 1995 we played before Prince Edward in Luxembourg. We have also represented Britain at British Fairs in Huy, Vise and Bastogne (Belgium). The Sutherland Pipes and Drums continue to welcome new members into their ranks. www.sutherlandpipesanddrums.com 30

Royal British Legion Riders Branch

The Royal British Legion Riders are not a motorcycle club but a national branch of The Royal British Legion formed 10 years ago by a small group of motorcycle enthusiasts, all ex forces, who wanted to raise money for The Poppy Appeal whilst enjoying their love of motorcycles and the activities surrounding that. Over the last ten years the branch has grown to be one of the largest in the Royal British Legion, now totalling over 6000 members. A large number of those members are serving or ex serving forces. The Riders branch raise money for the Poppy Appeal and have raised nearly ÂŁ800,000 over the last 9 years. They have a target this year to reach ÂŁ1Million and all individual riders, small groups, county and area teams are taking part in many activities around the country to reach this target. The Riders attend many community events such as the Whittlesey Festival as part of their activities and this helps to raise awareness of The Royal British Legion, the Riders Branch and the Poppy Appeal. They also raise money through sponsorship events; the Cambridgeshire Riders have been involved in both the Riders 1000 mile endurance challenge this year and some members have supported a cycle ride from Gibraltar to Buckinghamshire. Membership of the Riders Branch is just as much about 36

the social side. In the Eastern Region, there are regular ride outs either starting or finishing at a Royal British Legion Club for breakfast or lunch (we have been known to manage both). There are camping weekends, Christmas parties BBQ’s and days at the seaside. The Riders manage to take The Royal British Legion to events where it would not normally be represented; the British Motorcycle Federation Rally, the Ace Cafe and large motorcycle events such as The Southend Shakedown. The Riders support local Royal British Legion branches when they put on events providing a different focus and interest for visitors and are involved in many events in Europe this year for 100th Anniversary commemorations of WW1 and 70th Anniversary commemorations of WWII. The Royal British Legion Riders have the aim of honouring all those who have given their lives whilst serving their country and supporting service men/women and their families when they need assistance. A small group of the Eastern Riders has recently commenced a commemoration project to remember the 876 members of the Cambridgeshire Regiment who gave their lives in the First World War. The first of these, Cpl A C Rawson, is buried in Whittlesey cemetery and the Riders arranged a memorial service on the 100th Anniversary of his death which was attended by local dignitaries and Cpl Rawson’s family.

Whittlesey Festival 2014

Thank you... This seventh Whittlesey Festival has been organised by Fenland District Council together with local community groups. The Steering Group would like to thank businesses who contributed to the cost of the programme, the stallholders and organisations taking part including schools, bands, dancers, musicians and more. We sincerely thank all Whittlesey residents and visitors for their support and attendance at the event and hope everyone enjoys the range of activities provided. Thanks also to the Nisa Store on Broad Street for the kind permission to use their car park. Special thanks to our main sponsors - Fenland District Council and Whittlesey Town Council, together with Jackson Buildbase, also Parkers Newsagents for programme distribution. A special thanks to Brian of Whittlesey Christian Church and his team for all the help given throughout the year. Many thanks are due to the Ladies of the Nova Club for their contribution to the Festival fundraising coffee morning and to all the people that supported on the day. Finally, thanks are due to the project group - Pauline Edge, Jenny Parker, Brian Smithyman, Averil Cosstick and all the local organisations involved that work so hard to make the Whittlesey Festival the best event in the region.
